CINE-EXCESS launches Digital Film Channel on Amazon Prime UK

Cine-Excess is set to launch a new Digital Film Channel dedicated to promoting diverse new talent in cult cinema. The first three features will be released on Amazon Prime UK on March 15th 2021.

Films from three exciting new female filmmakers from around the world kick off Cine-Excess’s latest venture: BLACK LAKE (2020), from British Asian director K / XI, FORNACIS (2018), from French director Aurelia Mengin and LEAKAGE (2018), from Iranian director Suzan Iravanian.

A sensory, hypnotic road movie that evokes the experimental imagery of Jean Rollin’s 1970s vampire cinema tells of the dramatic romance between two women, Anya and Frida. Obsessed by the death of her betrothed, Anya is thrown into a world of confusion, in which Frida's memories mix dangerously with reality, causing an oscillation between the solitude of reality and the surrealism of thwarted desires.

The haunting BLACK LAKE fuses regional myth with horror movie traditions to tell the story  of Aarya, a young female artist who is gifted a red scarf, sent by her aunt from her recent travels to Pakistan. As a result, she is haunted by a Churail: a demonic and malevolent South-Asian Witch and is forced to face the devastating cycles of violence the Churail brings with her.

Described by Variety as a “high concept arthouse genre film”, LEAKAGE follows Jale, a middle-aged woman who discovers that crude oil is leaking out of her body. This unusual yet empowering phenomenon awakens the hope of a better future in her. On the other hand, it triggers uncertainty and paranoia in the male figures that surround her.

THE RECKONING - in Cinemas and on Digital April

Neil Marshall returns to the genre that made his name, reuniting with Dog Soldiers star Sean Pertwee, and featuring a striking lead performance from Charlotte Kirk (who also co-wrote the script) as a widow accused of being a witch.

Set against the backdrop of the Great Plague and subsequent witch-hunts against women, Grace Haverstock (Charlotte Kirk) must grapple with the tragic untimely death of her husband Joseph (Joe Anderson) in a society completely consumed by fear and death.

Because she rejects her landlord Squire Pendleton’s (Steven Waddington) advances, she is falsely accused of being a witch and thrown in jail for a crime she didn’t commit. Grace must endure physical persecution at the hands of England’s most ruthless witch-hunter Judge Moorcroft (Sean Pertwee) and face her own inner demons as the Devil himself starts to work his way into her mind.

It’s Witchfinder General for the Covid era, featuring a star-making turn from Kirk (Ocean’s Eight), who turns from tortured victim to fierce avenger; and a fantastic performance from Pertwee as a superbly sinister judge. Marshall, who directed episodes of Game of Thrones and Black Sails, knows how to mount a thrilling action set-piece, and piles on lashings of blood and thunder - and even a skin-crawling appearance from the devil - to tell this tale of a woman wronged seeking vengeance.

With touches of Hammer horror and recent cult hits The Witch and The Nightingale, THE RECKONING is, as BritFlicks says, “a proper rip-roaring yarn”.

THE RECKONING comes to Digital and to select cinemas (Covid restrictions permitting) April 16th.

Psychological thriller THE NIGHT - coming to Digital April

You’ll be praying for check out time this April, as Vertigo Releasing announces the arrival of the acclaimed hotel-set chiller THE NIGHT.

After a night out with friends, an exhausted married couple, Babak (Shahab Hosseini), Neda (Niousha Noor) and their baby take shelter in the grand, but eerie Hotel Normandie. Throughout a seemingly endless night, mysterious disturbances ruin their night’s rest as Babak and Neda soon realize they’re locked-in with a malevolent force that hungers for the dark secrets they’ve kept from one another.

Described by ROGEREBERT.COM as a “remarkable evocation of Kubrickian horror”, THE NIGHT is an outstanding debut feature from Iranian American writer/director Kourosh Ahari, featuring fantastic lead performances from Shahab Hosseini (Cannes and Berlin Film Festival winner for The Salesman and A Separation), and Niousha Noor (Here and Now), as a beleaguered couple haunted by the past.

Set over a long dark night of the soul, the film is superbly mounted, with a nerve-jangling soundtrack and a slow-building sense of dread - managing to combine a sensitive look at the immigrant experience in the US with some genuinely shattering horror moments.

THE NIGHT will be released on Digital Platforms on the 2ND APRIL

Dystopian thriller NEW ORDER - coming to UK cinemas June

From Writer/Director Michel Franco (After Lucia, Chronic) comes an incendiary and ambitious indictment on class divide and abuse of power which speaks to the Latin American experience whilst resonating beyond its Mexico City setting and interrogating disturbing current global trends.

In NEW ORDER, a lavish upper-class wedding goes awry when an unexpected uprising gives way to a violent coup. As seen through the eyes of the sympathetic young bride (Naian Gonzalez Norvind) and the servants who work for, and against, her wealthy family, the film breathlessly traces the collapse of one political system as it is replaced by another.

Following its Premiere and Grand Jury Prize win at the Venice Film Festival, the film went on to screen at Toronto Film Festival and the BFI London Film Festival 2020, shaking audiences with its riveting and suspenseful dystopian vision which occupies the same visually striking and thought-provoking social ground as Bong Joon-Ho’s Parasite. The film has recently been long-listed for a BAFTA in the Best Film Not in English Language category.

Intense, fast-paced and wildly unsettling, NEW ORDER is an edge-of-your-seat new work from a master filmmaker.

GORGON: A HORROR STORY - released as a digital audio play

Award winning comedian Elf Lyons is delighted to announce the release her critically acclaimed play “Gorgon: A Horror Story” as a digital audio play.

GORGON: A HORROR STORY - which entirely sold out its first weeklong run at VAULT Festival in February 2020 - was originally conceived as a live immersive horror, designed to prey on the senses, using live sound with expert foley and horror tricks inspired by the gruesome Le Théâtre du Grand-Guignol’s famed Parisian naturalistic horror shows of the early 20th Century.

Focusing on the still taboo subject of female anger, the show explores what happens when we are just pushed too far. A mild-mannered taxidermist encounters one too many mean-spirited people, loses her temper and decides to experiment with the human form...

GORGON has been deliberately constructed to combine the everyday with the gruesome and the humdrum with the horrifying. In this the new audio version, the team have stepped up the foley to truly set the grisly scene – resulting in a horror show delighted to delight and scare in equal measure.

The audio play will be available to download from the 15th of March at

Director Chris Bell on supernatural thriller THE HEIRESS - out March 15

Ahead of the UK Digital release of THE HEIRESS on March 15, 2021, director Chris Bell talks about familial horror influences, his South London ‘hooligangster’ phase and learning new lockdown skills.

Q) How did you get the idea for THE HEIRESS?

I was in my local library when I came across a painting. The artist was a local lady. I was drawn to this eerie artwork and I knew I had to meet her. When we did meet I told her that I was going to write a film inspired by this painting. Not only that but I promised to feature her in the movie – and I did just that.

Myself, alongside Danny and Kelly Prescott, created the script for what became The Heiress. I’d arranged a meeting with producer Jezz Vernon, whom I had recently worked with on another movie. We pitched the script to him and from there he came on board.

Q) How would you describe the film?

The Heiress is high concept horror that charts the story of four generations of a rural British family dominated by the female line. These women have been gifted an unusual supernatural patron who over the generations has become deeply possessive of them. The patron – an aggressive spirit loosely based on the ancient myth of Lilith – wants to protect them from ‘man’, but modernity has suffocated her mythology in the present generation of the female line, and we come to understand that her maternal dominance and hatred of men is now destroying the lives of the youngest women in the family.

The cast absolutely smashed the roles and the crew made the visuals exactly how we imagined the film to look like. It was a 100% team effort and I’m so proud of everyone who worked on it.

Q) It’s a very contemporary horror film, rooted in familial dysfunction. What was the influence behind that?

My first question to myself was: “What scared me as a child?” This isn’t something I’ve spoken about before but here goes…It wasn’t a scary movie or a monster in the closet but hearing the screams from my father’s epileptic seizures. I can remember being a toddler and diving under the covers when I heard these screams. For those that have ever witnessed someone having a seizure would know how frightening they are. I knew that this would HAVE to be the subplot to this story. I also wanted to know what would happen if you told your family, doctor, priest etc. “I’m seeing things”..!

For me, it was also a family movie. By this I mean my family were involved, I had my three kids on screen and my wife running the catering. We even shot some scenes inside my mum’s house! (after we took our shoes off).

Q) Any scary stories during filming?

Yes! We had the odd lights flicker and doors slam! All have logical explanations but as this is an interview for a horror movie I will say it was definitely ghosts

Q) You began life as an actor. What kicked it off for you?

I was around fourteen years old in the mid to late nineties at a secondary school in London. I was passionate about Drama. My drama teacher always thought of me as the class clown who didn’t take much very seriously. For me this lesson was an escape. It was the first time I realised I could use this time as an escape from my parent’s divorce. It’s an escape skill which I carry to this day. I mean can you think of another job where you can go to work and cry, laugh and be whoever the hell you want to be for that split second? You see an actor on TV crying and you clap. As performers we see something very different.

Q) Do you remember your first role?

Oh yes. I auditioned for a part in the school pantomime “Aladdin”. Naturally I wanted to play the lead but I was told I wasn’t good enough. I then noticed a character that I wasn’t familiar with – The Ring Genie. I asked my drama teacher if I could audition and she laughed and said “I don’t think this would be right for you dear”. I then heard someone say that this character needed to be very flamboyant and camp. It was only from watching The Birdcage that I actually knew what these characteristics meant. I remember walking out onto that stage, arms out with the biggest swag I could do. I made Julian Clary look butch! Needless to say I got offered the part.

Q) Besides acting, you’ve produced, directed and written a number of films and have said your South-East London upbringing inspired you to create some ‘hooligangster’ films. Can you elaborate?

It was pretty rough growing up in South East. When I look back, we got into some minor mischief but nothing to the degree of what I have portrayed on screen.

My first film, Three Stops Down From Plaistow (2013), was shot on the streets of Bermondsey. We had no money, we were just a bunch of pals playing with a camera and some crazy ideas. Little did I know back then that the film would end up on the shelves of HMV and get overdubbed in several countries.

I remember being asked at the premiere of Essex Boys: Law of Survival, which I wrote the story for, what I’d do if my wife was killed in real life like in the film. I think she was hoping I’d say “round up the troops and go after the bad guys”. I don’t think she was expecting me to say “Call the Police”.

It was fun making those films - there was also Hooligans at War - North vs South (2015) and I am Hooligan (2016), but I don’t think I’ll be returning to that genre any time soon. I think people have seen enough football associated violence and shotgun wielding hard men.

Q) How did you get into directing?

Like many actors I watched directors at work and thought: “how hard can that be”? Little did I know that it meant being the first to arrive on set and the last to leave. I think actors make good directors because they’ve been there. They know the pressures and how to get into an actors mind and how not to f*** with their brain. I say this as it only takes a second for someone to break your character and your’re screwed. You think ghosts are scary? You should meet an actor with the hump!!!

I think it was always in me. When I look back as a child playing with my action figures, I was directing my toys. I would have a story in my mind like Action Man fights the Terminator to win April from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. You may think I’m crazy but how many times have you heard a builder say that as a child he was obsessed with Lego or a chef saying how much they took to cooking as a child. Sometimes you can look back and just see things that were always there.

Q) How are you coping with lockdown?

I’m trying to keep as busy as possible. Doing lots with the family and also working on some new material. I’ve invested in a tripod as self-tapes are now the way forward for many castings and auditions. I think Mrs Bell finally got the hump with me asking her to hold the camera every time my agent got me a casting. All I need to do now is work out how to use the bloody thing! I’ve learnt some new skills, namely ZOOM and SKYPE. Danny and I are still writing together and sharing ideas.

Q) Finally, what’s next for you?

Well, writer and co-collaborator Danny Prescott and I have a few projects on the go. All on hold due to the pandemic but we have the words on paper. We can’t really say much other than we have a thriller in development which is inspired by true events and will be rather disturbing. Oh, and a little six part sitcom for TV.

THE HEIRESS will be available to download from all major platforms including iTunes, Amazon & SKY Box Office, from Monday 15th March, 2021.

Shudder announces UK & EIRE release of THE DARK AND THE WICKED

Shudder, the premium streaming service for thrillers, suspense and horror, is thrilled to announce that Bryan Bertino’s acclaimed new chiller THE DARK AND THE WICKED will be released exclusively on Shudder from 25 February 2021.

Bringing together the sun-drenched look of recent rave Midsommar with the blood-curdling gothic dread of The Turn of the Screw, acclaimed filmmaker Bryan Bertino (The Strangers, The Monster) returns to the home environment to mine more psychological terror and sophisticated scares in a film which goes straight to the heart of fractured family dynamics.

On a secluded farm, a man is bedridden and fighting through his final breaths while his wife (Julie Oliver - Touchstone, Preacher) slowly succumbs to overwhelming grief. Siblings Louise (Marin Ireland, Hell or High Water) and Michael (Michael Abbott Jr. - The Death of Dick Long) return home to help, but it doesn’t take long for them to see that something’s wrong with mom - something more than her heavy sorrow. Gradually, they begin to suffer a darkness similar to their mother’s, marked by waking nightmares and a growing sense that an evil entity is taking over their family.

With startling use of sound and shattering lead performances, THE DARK AND THE WICKED is a trip home you’ll never forget from one of the genre’s leading modern practitioners.

NOS4A2 - Series 1 & 2 Box set coming to DVD and Digital

STAR TREK’S Zachary Quinto stars as the evil Charlie Manx in NOS4A2, a different kind of vampire story based on the New York Times best-selling novel of the same name by Joe Hill, acclaimed novelist and son of horror maestro Stephen King.

This grippingly dark series follows a woman determined to track down a string of missing children whose disappearance may be more sinister than anyone would believe and is set to arrive on DVD courtesy of Acorn Media International.

Victoria "Vic" McQueen (Ashleigh Cummings – Tomorrow When the War Began, Miss Fisher’s Murder `Mysteries), is a young working-class artist, who, fed up with her parents (Virginia Kull – Big Little Lies, Twin Peaks and Ebon Moss-Bachrach – Girls, The Punisher) fighting, jumps on her motorbike and runs away. Soon she discovers that she has an uncanny ability to find lost things…

This power puts her on a dangerous collision course with the seemingly immortal, sinister, seductive Charlie Manx (Zachary Quinto – American Horror Story, Heroes). Manx lures children, feeds off their souls, then deposits what remains of them into Christmasland—a twisted Christmas Village of Manx's imagination where every day is Christmas Day and unhappiness is against the law.

Alongside bubbly, purple-haired librarian Maggie Leigh (Jahkara Smith – Into the Dark) who has a Scrabble bag portal to the universe, Vic must strive to defeat Manx and henchman Bing Partridge (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson – True Detective, The Missing), and rescue the missing children – all without losing her mind or falling victim herself…

Riddled with references to Joe Hill’s other renowned works, including Locke and Key, now also a hit series, alongside nods to his famous father’s masterpieces, NOS4A2 is a true treat for horror connoisseurs.

NOS4A2 Season 1 & 2 Complete DVD Box Set, comprising of 20 episodes on four discs, is released, as well as being available and on Digital, 8th March.

Amicus Productions THEY CAME FROM BEYOND SPACE on Disc and Digital, March

STUDIOCANAL presents a brand-new restoration of the Amicus Productions’ cult 60s sci-fi horror THEY CAME FROM BEYOND SPACE from the legendary director of The Evil Of Frankenstein and Dr Terror’s House Of Horrors, Freddie Francis.

When meteorites crash-land in the perfect formation of the letter V, the Ministry of Extraterrestrial Life on Other Planets (MELOP) led by Dr. Curtis Temple (Robert Hutton) is sent to investigate. The scientists and local bystanders soon find themselves possessed by an alien force which wants to enslave them.

No one is immune from the invasion except for Dr. Temple, who is shielded from the meteor’s influence by a metal plate that was inserted to protect his skull after a recent accident. He discovers that an alien race on the moon seeks to use the manipulated scientists for secret purposes. But, as Temple learns more about the invaders, he realises that they may not be as evil as he once thought.

Starring Robert Hutton, Jennifer Jayne, Zia Mohyeddin and Bernard Kay THEY CAME FROM BEYOND SPACE was written by Milton Subotsky, the acclaimed screenwriter of Dr Who and the Daleks and Tales from the Crypt, adapted from the book ‘The Gods Hate Kansas’ by Joseph Millard.

An enjoyably camp B-movie, the Amicus producers followed in the tradition of 50s classics such as Invasion of the Bodysnatchers adding some 60s kitsch-styling and ingenious low-budget special effects for this British retro treat.

- Audio commentary with Film Historian David Del Valle and Filmmaker David DeCoteau
- Original UK theatrical trailer

THEY CAME FROM BEYOND SPACE  is available to buy on Blu-ray, DVD and Digital formats from 8th March 2021.

SATOR : THE BEAST WITHIN - coming to Disc and Digital

Arriving on Digital and on DVD this month, SATOR is a chilling and atmospheric slice of slow-burn horror that follows Adam (Gabe Nicholson), who lives a life of isolation in a desolate forest.

He spends his days hunting for food and keeping watch for a supernatural entity called Sator. Adam and his brother Pete (Michael Daniel) have been told to be wary of Sator by their grandmother, Nani (June Peterson), who claims that this spirit has been guiding her through life as a whisper in her ear.

But whether or not the spirit plays any part in the death of family members remains a mystery. A film that will stay with you for weeks.

Written, directed, scored and produced by Jordan Graham over a seven year period, this is his first feature film and was almost a solo labour of love, which spent years in post production alone. SATOR enjoyed a successful worldwide premiere at Fantasia and a UK premiere at the Soho Horror Fest in 2019.

The plot is inspired by real life events surrounding the director's grandmother, who also makes a cameo appearance in the film.

SATOR : THE BEAST WITHIN is released to UK Digital outlets on 15th Feb and is available on DVD from the 22nd Feb from Lightbulb film distribution.
