Chilling docuseries THE ENFIELD POLTERGEIST - On AppleTV+, October

Apple TV+ have announced a new four-part documentary series THE ENFIELD POLTERGEIST, which tells the riveting story of the most famous poltergeist haunting in history. Combining more than 250 hours of rare audio archive, meticulous recreation of the setting of the haunting and original interviews with the people impacted by the case, the series is an ambitious genre-bending story that explores the human fascination with the unexplained and its impact on those who live it. All episodes premiere globally on Friday, October 27, 2023.

In 1977, the terrifying haunting of an everyday family in Enfield, London, dominated headlines across the United Kingdom and had a tremendous impact on an entire generation of children. The mysterious case forever changed ideas about the supernatural and that it wasn’t just restricted to castles and stately homes but could be experienced by anyone, anywhere. The chilling story has inspired fictionalized versions of the case, including the film “The Conjuring 2,” a television series and two stage plays.

Throughout four episodes, the events at Enfield are reconstructed using the real recordings captured by Maurice Grosse, a paranormal investigator who archived all of his interviews with those affected by the phenomenon. Building a replica of the house where the incidents took place, performers reenact what is heard on the actual tapes, allowing an interplay by the archival voices and appearances of those originally involved in the incident through present-day interviews.

THE ENFIELD POLTERGEIST is produced for Apple TV+ by MetFilm and Concordia Studio, the producers of Apple’s “STILL: A Michael J. Fox Movie,” this year’s most Emmy-nominated documentary. The series is directed by Jerry Rothwell. Executive producers are Al Morrow, BAFTA winner Stewart le Maréchal, Oscar Award-winning Davis Guggenheim, Jonathan Silberberg and Nicole Stott.

Apple TV+ offers premium, compelling drama and comedy series, feature films, groundbreaking documentaries, and kids and family entertainment, and is available to watch across all your favorite screens.”

Amicus Relaunch Bid Smashes Crowdfunding Goal in Less Than 24 Hours

An ambitious campaign to revive the iconic British horror studio has reached its £60K funding goal in just 11 hours as fans from around the world rally around the project.

Thanks to this hugely successful funding drive, Amicus is now set to return with its first film for decades, IN THE GRIP OF TERROR, a portmanteau feature harking back to the company's best-loved titles such as 'Dr. Terror's House of Horrors' (1965), 'Tales from the Crypt' (1972), and 'Asylum' (1972).

Since the announcement last month of the rebirth of Amicus, the team behind the project has received an incredible outpouring of support from the horror community, culminating in the launch of their record-breaking Kickstarter campaign. The team is seeking funds to produce 'In the Grip of Terror', and in return offering various perks, from Collector's Edition physical copies to exclusive merchandise, and even credits in the film.

The revival of Amicus is not a corporate reboot, but a project led by a team of genre filmmakers, passionate about classic horror and the future of independent filmmaking. According to director/producer Lawrie Brewster, “the new Amicus will be built by and for horror fans. By championing atmospheric visuals, compelling horror writing, and traditional practical effects, we plan to transport audiences back to the golden age of British horror. Restoring Amicus is not merely about reviving a film studio, it's about rekindling a passion, honouring a rich heritage, and showcasing the power of independent filmmaking.”

The first new film under the Amicus banner will feature four segments based on classic horror stories by H.P. Lovecraft, Ambrose Bierce, and E.M Forster, all on the theme of medical macabre. The film has been developed in close consultation with the family of Amicus co-founder Milton Subotsky, and aims to preserve and build upon his incredible filmmaking legacy.

IN THE GRIP OF TERROR' will star a host of UK horror icons including Laurence R. Harvey (Human Centipede II), and Jonathan Hansler (Axed, The Devil's Business) as well as upcoming talent such as Megan Tremethick (Ghost Crew, The Lockdown Hauntings).

Brewster and his business partner Sarah Daly have grand ambitions for the future of this icon of British horror, with a series of films slated, and their campaign stretch goals including plans to secure a bricks-and-mortar home for Amicus in Scotland.

Horror Novella I SAW SATAN AT THE 7-ELEVEN - publishing this Halloween

Fear and Loathing meets South Park in a screwball horror novella from the twisted mind of Christopher Brett Bailey. Part romance, part buddy comedy, part bizzarro body horror, I SAW SATAN AT THE 7-ELEVEN is a dark-as-night tale from a phenomenal new name in literary fiction.

Two miles north of Hell, a nameless deadbeat narrator spots Satan buying soy milk at the 7–Eleven. Satan's a washed-up has-been, who’s totally lost his edge. That is until he falls in love with our narrator, and the two embark on a debauched misadventure, by turns slapstick, violent, whimsical, dreamlike and tender.

Outside in the parking lot, Satan was polishing his windshield. Satan drove a Corvette, obviously. I went outside, kept my distance, eyeballed him wiping dead bugs from his wing mirrors. Clocking me, he struck a rebel pose, one foot up on the bumper, and called out, “I’m not a hippie. I’m lactose intolerant.”

“What?” I said… to Satan, “Are you talking to me?”

“Yes, I’m talking to you. I saw you eyeing up my soy milk and I want to set the record straight. I’m. No. Hippie.”

I SAW SATAN AT THE 7-ELEVEN is available from October 31st.

HELLRAISER returns to the big screen this Friday!

HELLRAISER The original 1987 horror classic returns to UK cinemas this week, this time in 4K…

It is time to re-experience the sublime agony of HELLRAISER as Clive Barker’s outrageously gruesome and influential horror masterwork returns to UK cinemas in a brand new 4K restoration - Hell has never looked so good!

In the 1980s, Clive Barker changed the face of horror fiction, throwing out the rules to expose new vistas of terror and beauty - and with Hellraiser, his first feature film as director, he did the same for cinema. The film was a smash hit at the box office, making fifteen times its budget, and went on to garner even more fans on home video. It became a hugely popular horror franchise, securing Pinhead and the Cenobites a place in the Horror Hall of fame.

Don’t miss this chance to see Hellraiser, described by Empire as “genuinely disturbing”, on the big screen in a 4K restoration from the original camera negatives, in all its gory and gleefully disturbing glory.

Synopsis: Hedonist Frank Cotton (Sean Chapman) thinks he has reached the limits of earthly pleasure, but a mysterious puzzle box will take him further than he can possibly imagine, opening the doors to a dominion where pain and pleasure are indivisible and summoning the Cenobites, whose experiments in the higher reaches of experience will tear Frank’s soul apart. When he manages to escape, Frank returns to the world skinless and in need of help. Now his former lover Julia (Clare Higgins) must kill to make him whole again; but the Cenobites want Frank back, and there’ll be hell to pay when they find him.

HELLRAISER is released in selected UK cinemas on 22nd September

HMUH Podcast - Halloween Plans

This October has a Friday the 13th, on which Horror Makes Us Happy will be releasing an interview with their 17th Horror Writers Association guest, HWA Secretary and author Becky Spratford.

Cohosts Chris and Steve will also be participating in Becky’s 31 Days of Horror, hosted on Becky’s blog RAForAll: Horror.  Past HWA notable guests have included Josh Malerman, Hailey Piper, Paula D Ashe, Tim Waggoner, and Lisa Morton.

Their next interview, with Chris Sarandon will be released on October 27th.  He should need no introduction to anyone who’s been paying attention to horror any time over the last 45 years, but for the record Mr. Sarandon has had roles in Fright Night, Child's Play, The Resurrected, and he voiced Jack Skellington in A Nightmare Before Christmas.  You might have also seen him in this little movie called The Princess Bride.

The meat of each interview covers their guest’s exposure to horror media, from childhood through adulthood, with an emphasis on digging up the deeper psychological reasons that guest, as an individual, loves horror.  Cohosts Steve Becker and Chris Whitman hope that after interviewing enough horror fans some interesting trends will arise, ones that could be handed back to mainstream academia.  As they say in their excerpts on their Youtube channel, "There are good reasons for enjoying horror, but what are those reasons?  The real reasons?  Not the ones horror fans learn to make people leave them alone."

About Horror Makes Us Happy: The hosts of the Horror Makes Us Happy podcast are Steve Becker and Chris Whitman.  Steve wrote A Guide to the Recovery Toolbox after ten years in recovery (now twenty), and Chris is the author and artist behind the horror webcomic PIECES.  You can find out more about Steve, Chris, and their projects at https://HorrorMakesUsHappy.com

Zombie Thriller HERD - On Disc and Digital, October

Have you HERD...? There’s a brand-new action-packed zombie thriller from Steven Pierce coming to our screens, starring Ellen Adair (Homeland, The Sinner) as a woman trying to outrun her past, but who accidentally runs headlong into a rampant zombie outbreak and a raging war between militia groups...

Following its successful World Premiere at FrightFest 2023 this August, you can join the HERD on Digital and DVD on 23 October 2023.

With her marriage on the rocks, Jamie (Adair) convinces her wife, Alex (Mitzi Akaha – Archive 81), to join her on a make-or-break canoe trip to her remote hometown in rural Missouri, where her father (Corbin Bernsen – Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Major League) still lives. But when an accident leaves Alex with a broken leg, things quickly go from bad to worse to unimaginable…

When they finally reach the town, they discover it’s been overrun by Heps – virus-infected humans turned bloody-thirsty zombies that are multiplying by the minute.

Even worse…. Alex has been scratched by one of the infected. As panic spreads, violence erupts, and hope turns to horror as the couple find themselves caught between two warring militia groups and the ravenous zombies and must do anything and everything they can to survive.

It’s fight for survival or fight for control as zombies face off with militia in a battle between the unstoppable undead and the cold-blooded commandos… and two women who’ll fight to the very last to make it out alive in this bloody-brilliant zombie fest.

FLOOD (2023) - A Review

A group of convicts and Sheriff's deputies, trapped inside their station as they wait out a torrential storm, find they've got bigger problems to worry about than bad weather in FLOOD, which is out now Disc and Digital.

A prison bus full of dangerous criminals are forced to divert, when their route is cut off  by bad weather, due to a hurricane battering the state of Louisiana. Taking refuge at a Sheriff's station, the officer in charge, Sheriff Newman (Nicky Whelan -  Hall Pass, Halloween 2) is less than happy about having to babysit a group of convicts, with all the other problems she's got due to the storm.

Soonafter though, the officers on duty find themselves under siege as a group of mercenaries storm the building, looking to break out one of the convicts, Cody (Casper Van Dien – Starship Troopers, Anaconda).

But, as the flood waters start to rise and the lower floors begin to flood, the cops, criminals and mercenaries discover they have a mutual problem. As a number of very large and very hungry alligators enter the building and proceed to start devouring everybody they comes across and the 3 groups realise they are going to have to put aside their differences and band together, if they wish to escape the flood waters and avoid getting eaten.

Borrowing elements from Assault on Precinct 13, and the 2019 film Crawl, I was looking forward to some nice gory deaths and thrilling action scenes. Unfortunately though, whilst the film did boast a few fun kills, and gun fights, I was left feeling somewhat underwhelmed by the cheap CGI gators and extremely unlikely scenarios that the cast kept finding themselves in.

Worth a watch if you enjoy low budget action films, but sadly falls somewhat short of the mark in terms of horror.

FLOOD is available now on DVD and to stream from selected Digital outlets.

Mayhem Film Festival announces full festival line-up

With just a month to go before Mayhem’s 19th edition takes place at Broadway, Nottingham (12-15 October), the team is excited to reveal this year’s full festival line-up. With a mix of premieres, previews, classics and Q&As, there is something for every fan of horror, sci-fi and cult cinema in this year’s programme.

Mayhem Film Festival will open on Thursday 12 October with a preview of Paris Zarcilla’s Raging Grace. Following an undocumented Filipina immigrant who takes on a job caring for an ailing man to try and provide for her young daughter, Raging Grace is a chilling thriller with hints of gothic horror. Rounding off the first night will be Richard V. Somes’ violent action-packed martial-arts thriller, Topakk (Triggered) in which a former special forces operative attempts to save a woman from a corrupt police death squad.

Friday 13 October sees day 2 of the festival, and superstitions are at the heart of our opening film. Set in 17th-century England, Sean Hogan’s To Fire You Come at Last follows a group of men  struggling to ignore ancient folk tales as they set off to carry a coffin on a long walk to the local graveyard. Director Sean Hogan, previously at Mayhem in 2011 for The Devil’s Business and in 2015 for Future Shock! The Story of 2000AD, will return for a post-screening Q&A.

We’ll then delve into the archives for giallo-inspired Door from Japanese director Banmei Takahashi, in which a woman becomes increasingly paranoid after being threatened on the phone by a local salesman.

We’ll move into the evening with the previously announced UK Premiere of Bertrand Mandico’s mind-bending epic Conann, before ending the day with Joe Lynch’s gory horror Suitable Flesh.

We’ll open Saturday 14 October with Mike Cheslik’s Hundreds of Beavers - a no-dialogue live-action cartoon epic in which a drunken applejack salesman must defeat hundreds of beavers to have a chance at being with the woman of his dreams.

We’ll then head into Matt Vesely’s sci-fi thriller, Monolith, in which a podcaster tries to get to the bottom of an alien conspiracy after discovering the existence of a mysterious artefact, before delving into this year’s beloved Short Film Showcase, featuring 15 films from around the world.

The evening will start with the previously announced Where The Devil Roams from the Adams family who we are absolutely delighted to welcome to this year’s festival. John Adams, Lulu Adams and Toby Poser will join us for a post-screening Q&A, before we wrap up the evening with Robert Rodriguez’ cult sci-fi horror, The Faculty.

Our last day will open with River, another time-loop fantasy from Junta Yamaguchi (Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes, Mayhem 2021), before stepping into the UK Premiere of Franck Khalfoun’s (Maniac, Mayhem 2012) Night of the Hunted  - a bloody thriller in which a woman is tormented by a lone sniper after stopping at a gas station in the middle of the night.

The previously announced bloody folk horror from Ariel Vida, Trim Season, will round-up the afternoon.

As we move into our final evening, we’ll present the remarkable The Animal Kingdom from French director Thomas Caillet - a body horror sci-fi set in a not-so-distant future in which some humans begin to mutate into other animal species.

We’ll then close the festival with the previously announced UK Premiere of Thomas Sainsbury’s surprising debut feature, Loop Track.

Full Festival Passes are still available for £85, giving you access to all films and events from this year’s festival. Individual tickets and Frankenstein ticket packages (where you can select four films for the price of three), are now also available.

8 FOUND DEAD - On UK Digital, October

Forget whodunit, it’s what the hell happened here and why were 8 FOUND DEAD? Travis Greene’s wickedly warped, acclaimed horror gets its UK home premiere this spooky season from High Fliers, with its UK Premiere on Sunday 8 October at GrimmFest 2023.

Excitement is building for a group of friends as they gear up for a fun-packed blowout at an idyllic, remote holiday rental. Carrie (Aly Trasher - Cerebrum) and Ricky (Eddy Acosta) are gettng ready to reunite with couple Dwayne (William Gabriel Grier - Twelve) and Sam (Alisha Soper - American Horror Story) – a social media influencer, who seems happier talking to her followers than to her partner and their other mates, who are all making their own way there.

As timelines switch, we see the friends arrive separately at the isolated guesthouse in the middle of the desert, where they are all met with a very unexpected welcome. The house is already occupied by another couple, Richard (Tim Simek - What’s Eating Gilbert Grape) and Liz (Rosanne Limeres). Is it a double booking or deadly bad luck?

Realising there’s more to their surprising guests than meets the eye, it’s not long before chilling revelations are revealed and an extremely uncomfortable situaRon becomes twisted terror.

Skilfully crafted, unsettlingly tense and gratifyingly gory,
8 FOUND DEAD guarantees a heartpounding, blood-splattered thrill ride that will linger long afer the credits have rolled. Stop the search – you’ve found your scream vacation, so check in with 8 FOUND DEAD – for the trip of a deathtime.
