Vampire Horror BOYS FROM COUNTY HELL - Coming July

Vertigo Releasing today announced the acquisition of BOYS FROM COUNTY HELL, the ultimate Dracula ‘origin story’. Vertigo is planning to release the film in cinemas and on digital platforms this Summer, and will be partnering with Wildcard for the Irish theatrical release.

Just when you thought the vampire film had been drained dry, along comes an unexpected and original spin on the genre from writer/director Chris Baugh, with the follow-up to his acclaimed crime thriller debut Bad Day For The Cut

Welcome to Six Mile Hill, a sleepy Irish backwater whose only claim to fame is the somewhat dubious local legend that Bram Stoker once spent a night in the local pub. It’s home to Eugene Moffat, a young man who fills most of his days drinking pints with his friends and pranking tourists who come to visit the gravesite of Abhartach, a legendary Irish vampire some believe to have inspired ‘Dracula.’

When a personal tragedy forces Eugene to go and work for his gruff, no-nonsense father he finds himself on the site of a controversial new road development that threatens to destroy the town’s livelihood.

But strange events unfold when Eugene and the crew tear down a famous cairn believed to be the final resting place of Abhartach and they soon come under attack from a sinister force that has infected one of their workmates. As the night closes in The Boys must fight for survival while discovering the true horror of a myth that hits much closer to home than any of them realise…

With a fantastic cast, including Jack Rowan (Peaky Blinders, Noughts + Crosses), Louisa Harland (Derry Girls), Nigel O’Neill (Bad Day For The Cut), and John Lynch (The Banishing, Isolation), BOYS FROM COUNTY HELL is rich in celtic atmosphere, drenched in gore, wildly funny and splendidly scary - the very definition of a crowd pleaser.

Classic cult shocker BATTLE ROYALE comes to UHD April...

The kids of Third Year Class-B Shiroiwa Junior High School are back, in a brand new UHD restoration of the classic cult shocker BATTLE ROYALE, adapted from the controversial novel by Koushun Takami.

Presenting an alternate dystopian vision of turn-of-the-millennium Japan, Battle Royale follows the 42 junior high school students selected to take part in the government’s annual Battle Royale programme, established as an extreme method of addressing concerns about juvenile delinquency. Dispatched to a remote island, they are each given individual weapons (ranging from Uzis and machetes to pan lids and binoculars), food and water, and the order to go out and kill one other. Every player is fitted with an explosive collar around their neck, imposing a strict three-day time limit on the deadly games in which there can only be one survivor. Overseeing the carnage is ‘Beat’ Takeshi Kitano (Sonatine, Hana-bi, Zatoichi) as the teacher pushed to the edge by his unruly charges.

Playing like a turbo-charged hybrid of Lord of the Flies and The Most Dangerous Game, the final completed work by veteran yakuza film director Kinji Fukasaku (Battles without Honor and Humanity, Graveyard of Honor) helped launch a new wave of appreciation for Asian cinema in the 21st century. Also included in the set is the incendiary sequel Battle Royale II, the directing debut of Kenta Fukasaku (after his father passed away during production), in which a new class of delinquents are recruited by the government to hunt down the survivor of the deadly games of the first film.

Psychological horror EVIE enters post-production

Brit indie feature film EVIE, starring Holli Dempsey (Derek, After Life), Michael Smiley (Luther, Kill List) and Jay Taylor (Donkey Punch, Manhunt), has just wrapped a four week shoot on locations in Yorkshire and the Llyn Peninsula, Wales.

Directed by Dominic Brunt (Before Dawn, Bait,) and Jamie Lundy (marking his feature film debut). the brooding psychological horror thriller centres on Evie (Dempsey), who has been burdened with a dark secret for most of her life.

Witness to a family tragedy when they were younger and ripped from an idyllic life by the sea, both Evie and her older brother Tony (Taylor) were put into care. Twenty years later they are reunited, but something terrible from their past follows…

The film also stars Honey Lundy, Liam McMahon, Joanne Mitchell and Danny-Lee Brunt.

Dominic Brunt said today: “I was drawn to the allegorical aspects of the story and the stunning locations of Yorkshire and the Llyn Peninsula. I’d known Jamie Lundy as a brilliant stills photographer and knew that his skills would be borne out as a director and I very much enjoyed the experience of co-directing with such an exceptional talent. It was also a fantastic opportunity to work with my producer wife Joanne Mitchell again. For myself, I wanted to expand on my fascination for natural storytelling and placing horror within an everyday context. Evie is very much a psychological thriller with a wicked horror twist in its tale.”

Jamie Lundy added: “For most filmmakers, I’m sure it’s safe to say that most will never forget shooting their first feature film, for both the good reasons and the bad. For me, Evie was not only my debut film, but an emotional experience I will never forget. Producing a film in normal circumstances is of course very difficult but producing it in a global pandemic was tougher than we expected. I can only give credit to our amazing producer and the crew who started and finished the production with no Covid cases. Evie is something very special and celebrates great British landscapes, great British acting and great British filmmaking.”

EVIE is a Paper Clip Pictures & Mitchell-Brunt Films Production, produced by Joanne Mitchell and exec-produced by Jamie Lundy. Written and directed by Jamie Lundy and Dominic Brunt. Associate Producer is Julie Foy and DOP is Edward Ames. Prosthetic make-up is by Shaune Harrison.

10 Question with Jayne Wisener - star of THE HEIRESS

As supernatural horror film THE HEIRESS goes on digital release this month, lead actress Jayne Wiseman talks about her love of singing, coping with lockdown and her new period drama, Glow & Darkness.

Q) You star in a new British supernatural horror film, THE HEIRESS. Tell us how you got the part and what is was about the script that appealed to you.

I worked with David Wayman a few years ago and he mentioned me to Chris when they were discussing the project. Chris reached out me and we had a great chat about the project. I was really excited about the concept. I love supernatural horror in general and this was something I’d not quite seen before.

Q) What did you find most demanding about playing Anna?

I found the role came quite naturally to me. Weirdly I was even five weeks pregnant when we started filming! I have a sister too so I understand the dynamics of a close female bond. The hardest thing was probably trying to change my accent to sound as much like Candis as possible!

Q)You’ve worked in the horror genre before. Tell us about your part in Boogeyman 3.

That was a very small role right at the end of the movie. But it was fun to be a part of!

Q) Your first movie role was playing Johanna Barker in Tim Burton’s Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Quite a career entry! Looking back, how do you reflect about the whole experience?

The entire experience was phenomenal. Everything completely incredible and I’m so grateful. I was very young though and spent a lot of time feeling very overwhelmed and insecure. I wish I had lived in the moment and allowed myself to enjoy it more than I did!

Q) You enjoyed a three-year stint in the popular BBC Northern Ireland drama series 6 Degrees. What were the highlights for you?

Oh I adored doing that show. I got to live and work in Belfast with an incredible cast and crew who became such great friends.

Q)You were born in Ballymoney and grew up in Coleraine. Have your Northern Irish roots continued to be important to you in terms of your career choices?

I have always jumped at every opportunity to work in Northern Ireland. I just love home. So much so that I actually moved back this year!

Q) You’ve said you’re really proud of playing Lauren, the feisty schoolgirl in The Inbetweeners. Tell us more.

I was a fan of the show when it originally aired. It has since become a huge cult comedy with a massive following worldwide. Over ten years later, it continues to appeal to new generations of young people. I am so proud to have been a part of it.

Q) You’re also a singer and have appeared in many successful musicals, such as Northern Ireland Opera’s co-production of Kiss Me, Kate. How do you plan to carry on with that part of your career?

I love singing and I really miss it when I don’t do it. Hopefully, I will have more opportunities to sing in the future. The pandemic has completely destroyed live theatre which devastates me. As soon as I’m asked to sing on a stage again I’ll savour every second.

Q) How have you coped with lockdown?

I’ve been kept fairly busy during lockdown as I have a 2 year old son. I did struggle massively with my mental health last year during the initial lockdown to be honest. However, on the whole I have been very lucky. I live at home now so I’m able to bubble with family. But I do miss a lot of people terribly.

Q) Finally, what’s next for you?

I recently finished filming a nice role, playing Beatrice of Burgundy, in the upcoming medieval TV drama series ‘Glow & Darkness’ about the life of Francis of Assisi.  I’m looking forward to that being aired. Aside from that, I’m continuing with self tapes and hoping that the entertainment industry returns to some version of normal in the near future!

THE HEIRESS is out now and available to download from all major platforms including iTunes, Amazon & SKY Box Office.

Alien Invasions! Haunted Pianos! Sentient Monster Trucks! Arrow Video is proud to present the first ever collection of works by Bill Rebane, the epitome of an independent regional filmmaker who built his own studio in the wilds of Wisconsin. He acted for Hitchcock, he searched for the arms of the Venus De Milo, he turned a VW Beetle into a giant spider and he’s still at work today!

Bringing together six films, all new to Blu-ray and in brand new restorations, Weird Wisconsin: The Bill Rebane Collection packs in a mutant astronaut bothering blissful sunbathers (Monster A Go-Go), a contagion apocalypse as seen from the vantage point of a remote mountain cabin (Invasion from Inner Earth), deadly alien spores from the rocks of Mars (The Alpha Incident), rural gothic and outright horror (The Demons of Ludlow), an eccentric ‘body count’ movie (The Game) and a comedy smash-‘em up that pits three hillbilly stooges against a talking Monster Truck with artificial intelligence (Twister’s Revenge).

Rebane himself called it “the worst film ever made”, but it’ll still give you the wim-wams!

EXEC-PRODUCED BY Ridley Scott, horror-period-drama THE TERROR features a fantastic line-up of British acting greats including BAFTA winner Jared Harris (Chernobyl, The Crown) and Golden Globe nominee Tobias Menzies (The Crown, Game of Thrones), as the crew of a real life Royal Naval expedition in 1847 that ventures deep into the Arctic.

Following its run on BBC Two, this gripping thriller with a horror edge is set for its Blu-ray, DVD and digital debut on 26 April 2021 from Acorn Media International. Based on Dan Simmons’ best-selling novel, the 10-part series has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 93%, and has been lauded as ‘A fascinating step forward for the survival-horror genre…genius’ (The Atlantic).

1847, the crew of a real life Royal Naval expedition led by three captains, Sir John Franklin (Ciaran Hinds – Game of Thrones, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), Francis Crozier (Harris) and James Fitzjames (Menzies), is sent to find the Arctic's fabled treacherous Northwest Passage, but instead discovers a monstrous polar bear-like predator, a cunning and vicious Gothic horror that stalks the ships in a desperate game of survival.

However, it soon becomes clear that that's just the beginning of their troubles. As things worsen and civilised behaviour disintegrates in favour of survival at any cost, the crew must simultaneously battle the elements, the supernatural and eventually – themselves. The list of films currently in the line-up are as follows:

THE STYLIST (Jill Gevargizian, 2020).

We all dream of being someone else... but for Claire (Najarra Townsend, CONTRACTED), that dream goes from an obsession to a living nightmare. FORNACIS (Aurelia Mengin, 2018)

A sensory, hypnotic road movie that evokes the experimental imagery of Jean Rollin’s 1970s vampire cinema and tells of the dramatic romance between two women, Anya and Frida. Obsessed by the death of her betrothed, Anya is thrown into a world of confusion, in which memories mix dangerously with reality, causing an oscillation between the solitude of reality and the surrealism of thwarted desires.

BLACK LAKE (K / XI, 2020)

Fusing regional myth with horror movie traditions to tell the story of Aarya, a young female artist who is gifted a red scarf, sent by her aunt from her recent travels to Pakistan. As a result, she is haunted by a Churail: a demonic and malevolent South-Asian Witch and is forced to face the devastating cycles of violence the Churail brings with her.

LEAKAGE (Suzan Iravanian, 2018)

Jale, a middle-aged woman discovers that crude oil is leaking out of her body. This unusual yet empowering phenomenon awakens the hope of a better future in her. On the other hand, it triggers uncertainty and paranoia in the male figures that surround her.

TRANS (Naeri Do, 2020)  - UK premiere screening.

A girl who dreams of becoming transhuman by transmitting electrical shocks to her brain. After facing a serious assault, she plans revenge on the boys that have bullied her for having an eating disorder. To take vengeance she conducts an electrical baptism and falls into trans – a state where one can become transhuman from high voltage electric shocks.

RED PILL (Tonya Pinkins, 2021)  - UK premiere screening.

Six progressives, one deadly weekend! Set during the 2020 run-up to the presidential election, Tonya Pinkins film offers an unsettling expose of racism within contemporary America. The film takes place on Halloween weekend of the 2020 election and focusses on six old friends who go campaigning in red country, armed with only humour and naiveté. When they meet an immovable force, their plans are thwarted and the fight to win an election becomes a fight for their lives.

IN THE LIGHT OF THE NIGHT (Misha L Kreuz, 2020) - UK premiere screening.

Updating horror cinema’s mythologies around the werewolf figure whilst also providing some pointed reflections on Germany and its past traumas.
