Sci-Fi thriller SETTLERS - on Digital platforms, July

A Quiet Place meets The Martian in the dazzling sci-fi thriller SETTLERS, the story of a family who have made their home in a barren wilderness on Mars, only to have it torn apart when a dangerous stranger intrudes into their compound.

Following an ecological disaster on Earth, a family eke out an existence on a desolate Martian homestead. Reza (Jonny Lee Miller) and his wife Ilsa (Sofia Boutella), do their best to protect nine-year-old daughter Remmy (Brooklynn Prince) from the dangers of the surrounding landscape.

But when hostile outsiders appear in the nearby hills, Remmy becomes aware of the disturbing reality of her situation, that her parents have shielded her from all this time. She is taken hostage by the outsider, Jerry (Ismael Cruz Córdova), and as time goes by, the probability of escape for Remmy (now played by Nell Tiger Free) grows increasingly remote, while Jerry’s intentions grow more and more sinister.

Set to a superb score by acclaimed musician Nitin Sawhney (Mowgli, Midnight’s Children), SETTLERS is a visually striking, wildly original and pulse-quickening tale of survival and redemption, which also explores pertinent issues such as immigration and isolation.

SETTLERS is London-based writer/director Wyatt Rockefeller’s first feature. The fantastic cast includes Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Star Trek Beyond) and Jonny Lee Miller (Elementary, Trainspotting) as the heads of the struggling family. Nell Tiger Free (Game of Thrones), Ismael Cruz Cordova (The Undoing), and award-winner Brooklynn Prince, the talented star of The Florida Project, also star.

SETTLERS will be released at selected UK cinemas and on Digital Platforms July 30th.

Summer shocks in July on Horror Channel

Carpenter, Cronenberg and Eli Roth lead a summer charge of seasonal shockers on Horror Channel this July.

Considered one of David Cronenberg’s early genre classics, SCANNERS was based on Cronenberg’s scripts The Sensitives and Telepathy 2000, which he planned to pitch to Roger Corman. Starring Michael Ironside and Patrick McGoohan, the film went on to became one of the first produced in Canada to successfully compete with American films at the international box office. Also airing is David Cronenberg’s other cult classic body horror THE BROOD, which stars Oliver Reed and Samantha Eggar. To many this remains one of the director’s most frightening and resonant movie.

Although not an outright hit when it was released in 2001, JOHN CARPENTER’S GHOSTS OF MARS, which stars Natasha Henstridge, Ice Cube, Jason Statham and Pam Grier, has since gone on to cultivate a cult following, largely due to for the hard-core space action sequences and the soundtrack. Equally, Eli Roth’s notorious post-modern celebration of the Italian cannibal genre, THE GREEN INFERNO, has divided mainstream opinion but continues to delight genre fans for its homage to Italian cannibal films of the late 1970s.

Other Highlights include Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer’s stunning contemporary occult tale of Hollywood ambition, STARRY EYES, Timo Vuorensola’s barnstorming surreal sci-fier IRON SKY. Julian Gilbey’s harrowing British survival shocker, A LONELY PLACE TO DIE, starring Melissa George and Ed Speelers and fans of Arnold Schwarzenegger will welcome the clone-seeker’s top-notch performance in THE 6TH DAY

New UK release date for BOYS FROM COUNTY HELL

Vertigo Releasing has announced that BOYS FROM COUNTY HELL, the ultimate Dracula ‘origin story’, will be released in UK and Irish cinemas on 6th August. Vertigo will be partnering with Wildcard for the Irish theatrical release. The film stars Peaky Blinders’ Jack Rowan, and Derry Girls’ Louisa Harland.

Just when you thought the vampire film had been drained dry, along comes an unexpected and original spin on the genre from writer/director Chris Baugh, with the follow-up to his acclaimed crime thriller debut Bad Day For The Cut

When a personal tragedy forces Eugene to go and work for his gruff, no-nonsense father he finds himself on the site of a controversial new road development that threatens to destroy the town’s livelihood. But strange events unfold when Eugene and the crew tear down a famous cairn believed to be the final resting place of Abhartach and they soon come under attack from a sinister force that has infected one of their workmates. As the night closes in The Boys must fight for survival while discovering the true horror of a myth that hits much closer to home than any of them realise…

With nods to Ireland’s formidable horror heritage (the local pub is called ‘The Stoker’ after the Dracula author), it follows recent Irish folklore horror hits The Hallow and The Hole in The Ground, whilst also injecting some surprisingly hysterical moments. It echoes Clive Barker’s Irish-set eighties creature feature Rawhead Rex, as well as a delectable sense of the backwoods dread present in 2019’s Scottish rural thriller Calibre.

With a fantastic cast, including Jack Rowan (Peaky Blinders, Noughts + Crosses), Louisa Harland (Derry Girls), Nigel O’Neill (from Baugh’s debut), and John Lynch (The Banishing, Isolation), BOYS FROM COUNTY HELL is rich in celtic atmosphere, drenched in gore, wildly funny and splendidly scary - the very definition of a crowd pleaser.

10 Questions with Alexis Kendra, star, writer & producer of THE CLEANING LADY

Ahead of Horror Channel’s premiere of THE CLEANING LADY on June 26, the film’s star, writer and producer Alexis Kendra talks about playing a ‘Goddess’, coping with lockdown and why she can’t watch horror films on her own

Q) THE CLEANING LADY is having its channel premiere on Horror Channel. Excited?

I love you guys. Always have, always will. I’m honoured.

Q) It’s a very disturbing film, dealing with abuse, addiction and hidden rage, yet the characters are sympathetic and have real depth. It’s horror with a twisted heart. As a co-writer, alongside your director Jon Knautz, what were the main challenges in getting the balance right between acting and writing?

I compartmentalize real easy, so if I’m writing, I’m writing. If I’m acting I’m acting. I don’t really mix anything so it’s not that difficult. Keeps me in the present moment a lot.

Q) The film started life as a short, in which you played Shelly, the disturbed ‘cleaning lady’. Why did you switch roles and play the ‘love-addicted’ Alice in the feature?

Yeah, I wrote the role of Shelly for me to play, but we couldn’t find an Alice. Period. So I had to play her and I’m happy because Rachel was so great as Shelly and I enjoyed playing a role so different than in my last film Goddess of Love.

Q) Audiences in the UK also know you from GODDESS OF LOVE, which was dubbed ‘Fatal Attraction for horror fans’. You play Venus, whom we watch violently descend into madness. How tough was it to play?

I loved everything about playing Venus. She was a pleasure. It wasn’t hard in any way. I wrote that role for myself to just have an actor’s absolute playground, knowing I would never have been cast as that role in anyone else’s film.  Any actors reading this, become writers/producers.  Write yourself a dream role then play it.  Venus was a ball.

Q) Again, you teamed up with Knutz as co-writer, producer and lead actress. What is it that makes you both a winning combination?

I respect him as a director and he respects me as a producer/actress/ production designer. It’s all about respect and trust, and as work partners – we nail it. Without respect we wouldn’t have made it this far.

Q) Both films have premiered at FrightFest to great acclaim. As an American, how does the reception compare to back home?

Since all our world premiere’s we’re with FrightFest, all the red carpet fun stuff and fans, I’ve had an amazing time in London. Back in LA its back to work, back to getting the next project made. Since my films can be bought anywhere it’s just nice to see them being bought!

Q) What attracts you most about the horror genre?

The element of fantasy. I think horror films are the ultimate escape from reality because as we’re watching one we know there’s no ghosts in real life, yet, a scary ghost film is thrilling because it seems so real. It’s like we know we’re safe in our house watching something so haunting.  I can’t watch horror films alone.

Q) Seen any good horror movies this year?

I’ve been spending most of my time writing during this crazy Covid time, and less watching. I’m sure that’ll change soon as I would love to see A Quiet Place Part 11.

Q) How have you been coping with lockdown?

I’m more of a homebody than anything, so for me it hasn’t been that different.  I’m always home writing, so nothing has really changed for me there.  I do see how its effecting my friends and family, mainly the ones who are used to being out a lot more and it’s been super tough. I think this lockdown has forced us to really look within and take a moment to re-evaluate our lives.  I’ve seen a lot of growth.

Q) Finally, what’s next?

I’ll probably direct something. That’s always been on my list, and I think I’m ready.

THE CLEANING LADY airs on Horror Channel Saturday 26 June, 10.50pm.

DUNE - On Limited Edition UHD AND BD from Arrow

Following a notorious aborted attempt by Alejandro Jodorowsky in the 1970s, Frank Herbert’s bestselling sci-fi epic Dune finally made it to the big screen as the third film by emerging surrealist wunderkind David Lynch, featuring an all-star cast that includes several of Lynch’s regular collaborators.

The year is 10,191, and four planets are embroiled in a secret plot to wrest control of the Spice Melange, the most precious substance in the universe and found only on the planet Arrakis. A feud between two powerful dynasties, House Atreides and House Harkonnen, is manipulated from afar by ruling powers that conspire to keep their grip on the spice. As the two families clash on Arrakis, Duke Atreides’ son Paul (Kyle MacLachlan, in his screen debut) finds himself at the centre of an intergalactic war and an ancient prophecy that could change the galaxy forever.

Though its initial reception ensured that Lynch largely eschewed mainstream filmmaking for the rest of his career, Dune has since been rightly re-evaluated as one of the most startlingly original and visionary science fiction films of the 1980s. Splatstick Puppet Horror Comedy SNORE - available online

“SNORE”, an award winning “splatstick” horror comedy featuring a cast of Muppet style puppets is now available to view online following an international run at film festivals over the last two years.

Hard nosed businesswoman Karen has gone bankrupt yet again, forcing her and Callum, her toyboy lover/ PA to stay in a grotty halfway house run by equally grotty landlord Frances. A strange noise catches their attention in the middle of the night, leading them into a battle for survival with "the Jip", a small pig like creature.

Who will survive and, most importantly, what will be left of Callum's designer manbag?

Snore is an over the top rollercoaster ride of a film, featuring a variety of puppets, miniatures and green screen action to bring the cavalcade of ridiculous splaststick action to life.

Part funded with help from the Adur And Worthing Trust, Snore was somewhat of a local affair, with writer/ director Luther Bhogal-Jones living in the region and utilised the help of local artist Garry Robson for the designs of the cast, brought to life by local prop maker Charlotte Regan and featuring a voice cast including local actor Andrew Calverley. It was predominantly shot in the basement of the (now closed) Beechwood House Hotel in Worthing (now the Brewhouse and Kitchen) with additional green screen work shot at the practice space of Zodiac Allstars Cheerleading in Lancing.

THE CAT O’ NINE TAILS - On Limited Edition 4K UHD Blu-ray from Arrow

Following the success of his debut feature, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, distributor Titanus tasked writer/director Dario Argento with delivering a follow-up in short order. The resulting film, granted a greatly enhanced budget and heralded in its US marketing campaign as “nine times more suspenseful” than its predecessor, was THE CAT O’ NINE TAILS .

When a break-in occurs at a secretive genetics institute, blind puzzle-maker Franco Arnò (Karl Malden - Patton, One-Eyed Jacks), who overheard an attempt to blackmail one of the institute’s scientists shortly before the robbery, teams up with intrepid reporter Carlo Giordani (James Franciscus - Beneath the Planet of the Apes) to crack the case.

But before long the bodies begin to pile up and the two amateur sleuths find their own lives imperilled in their search for the truth. And worse still, Lori (Cinzia De Carolis - Cannibal Apocalypse), Franco’s young niece, may also be in killer’s sights…

This second entry in the so-called “Animal Trilogy” found Argento further refining his distinctive style and cementing his reputation as the master of the giallo thriller. Co-starring Catherine Spaak (Il Sorpasso) and Rada Rassimov (Baron Blood), and featuring another nerve-jangling score by the great Ennio Morricone (The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Good, The Bad and the Ugly), THE CAT O’ NINE TAILS remains one of Argento’s most suspenseful and underrated films.
