Arrow Video FrightFest announces line-up for Halloween 2021 event

Following on from its hugely successful August five-day event, Arrow Video FrightFest is back at the Cineworld, Leicester Square with a bumper two-day Halloween event on Friday 29th Oct and Sat 30th October, presenting nine fear-packed premieres from around the world.  The monstrous movie marathon embraces World, International and UK premieres, as we journey through an unholy celebration of mayhem, menace and murder.
Kicking off the Black Friday gala ghoulishness is the UK premiere of THE SEED, a gut-bursting alien creature feature from Screen International ‘Star of Tomorrow’ director Sam Walker. Walker will be attending, alongside the main cast - Lucy Martin, Sophie Vavasseur and Chelsea Edge - and SFX maestro Dan Martin. This is followed by the UK premiere of BARBARIANS with Game of Thrones star Iwan Rheon. First-time director Charles Dorfman, who will be in attendance, alongside members of the cast, reveals his talent for Pinter-esque dialogue, multi-layered resonance and unsettling tone in this subtle shocker based around a birthday dinner party.

Bringing the evening’s thrills to a fitting climax is the UK premiere of THE POSSESSED. The director of Boar is back with a supernatural shocker inspired by true events and starring John Jarratt from Wolf Creek.

Scary Saturday begins with the UK premiere of hugely informative in-depth documentary PENNYWISE: THE STORY OF IT. With contributions from Stephen King, Tim Curry and Tommy Lee Wallace, this is packed with little known details and rare behind-the-scenes footage, You could say, this is IT!

Next up is the World Premiere of the uniquely visionary LAST SURVIVORS, an intense and ultimately tragic study of isolation and family bonds, starting Stephen Moyer and Alicia Silverstone. Director Drew Mylrea will be joining us.

The lonely, uncanny and often accidentally violent world of childhood is explored with chilling candour in THE INNOCENTS, which has its UK Premiere. Blind writer/director Eskil Vogt’s creepy art house horror has been winning major awards around the world.

Next up is the UK premiere of AMULET, the feature film debut of distinguished actor Romola Garai. Romola will be attending to discuss her freaky and frightening chiller, which marks her as an audacious new horror auteur on the scene.

The 9pm presentation is the UK premiere of VENECIAFRENIA, Spanish horror icon Álex de la Iglesia’s shocking fable about tourism, and the final film is the International premiere of MIRACLE VALLEY, the astounding directorial debut of Greg Sestero, survivor and star of the cult midnight movie The Room.

Hex to Revive Cult Horrors With Retro Paperback Collection

Last year, Scottish film company Hex Studios announced its new publishing wing Hex Arcana, and released hardback short story anthology 'The Book of Beastly Creatures'.

Next on the Hex Arcana agenda; revive the pulp horror paperback. Their first offering in the collection is a new edition of Sarban's classic alt-history horror 'The Sound of His Horn'. First published in 1952, the much-loved novel imagines a nightmare world where the Nazis won the war, and people are hunted for sport.

The retro edition is inspired by the cult horror paperbacks of the 70s and 80s, and features an original, hand-painted cover by legendary artist of the era, Lisa Falkenstern. Acclaimed horror critic and scholar Kim Newman provides an insightful new foreword to the volume.

THE SNAKE GIRL AND THE SILVER-HAIRED WITCH - out NOW on UK Blu-Ray from Arrow

What do you get when Noriaki Yuasa, director of Daiei Studios’ much-beloved Gamera series, makes a monochrome film adaptation of the works of horror manga pioneer Kazuo Umezu (The Drifting Classroom)? The answer is 1968’s The Snake Girl and the Silver-Haired Witch, a fantastically phantasmagorical slice of twisted tokusatsu terror ostensibly made for children that will irreparably traumatise any child that sees it!

A young girl named Sayuri is reunited with her estranged family after years in an orphanage – but trouble lurks within the walls of the large family home. Her mother is an amnesiac after a car accident six months earlier, her sullen sister is confined to the attic and a young housemaid dies inexplicably of a heart attack just before Sayuri arrives… is it all connected to her father’s work studying venomous snakes? And is the fanged, serpentine figure that haunts Sayuri’s dreams the same one spying on her through holes in the wall?

Making its worldwide Blu-ray debut and its home video premiere outside Japan, this rarely-screened, nightmarishly disorienting creepshow not only displays a seldom-seen side of kaiju auteur Yuasa, but its skilful blending of Umezu’s comics (published in English-language markets as Reptilia) arguably anticipates many of the trends seen in J-horror decades later.

Raw and unsettling, DEMENTER is a brave and unflinching story of lives lived on the fringes of society, and a battle with demons inside and out. Shot on real locations with many non-actors playing versions of themselves – including Kinkle’s real life sister Stephanie – this is a deeply personal genre film with an emotional punch that lingers long after the credits have rolled. The film will be streaming with a host of brand new extras that illuminate the making of this uniquely innovative horror.

ARROW is delivering the goods for the month of Halloween, and then some, with the return of “He Who Walks Behind The Rows” in the chilling sequels CHILDREN OF THE CORN Parts II and III; the definitive documentary on one of the greatest horror films ever made, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE SHOCKING TRUTH; and a rediscovered and restored 80s slasher gem, DEATH SCREAMS arriving with extras. ARROW is also proud to present the definitive restored edition of one of the most famous of all silent movies, F. W. Murnau’s NOSFERATU, a film that continues to haunt — and, indeed, terrify — modern audiences with a waking nightmare that changed cinema history forever.

For those in need of a gritty crime fix, ARROW is showing Seasons 3 and 4 of the acclaimed no-holds-barred French cop series BRAQUO, with Caplan (the terrific Jean-Hughes Anglade) and his team of rogue cops out for some serious vengeance.

New Seasons this October include The Shocktober 31, with 31 of our favourite horror titles streaming on ARROW each day including Deadly Manor, The Crazies, Kolobos, Beyond the Door, and Demons; Shocktober Essentials, a devilishly curated selection of twelve must-watch collections featuring Zombies, Vampires, Monsters, Spirits, Giallo, Slashers, Comedies, Gore, Psychological, Documentaries, 70s Horrors and 80s horrors; and Monster Mash, a selection of Japanese monster movies, all suitably spooky for Halloween month, including 100 Monsters, Along with Ghosts and The Snake girl and the Silver Haired-Witch.

ALSO SHOWING: An eye-opening documentary on the infamous video nasties era; creepy Deep South thriller THE NEIGHBOUR; Jim Van Bebber’s shocking true crime epic THE MANSON FAMILY; Takashi Miike’s THE GREAT YOKAI WAR; the satanic mayhem of Lucio Fulci’s  DEMONIA, and more...

Mockumentary BIGFOOT HUNTERS in Cinemas 22 Oct and on Digital 25 Oct

Join the hunt for the legendary sasquatch in hilarious creature feature-comedy mockumentary BIGFOOT HUNTERS.

Meet Brian Emond, a millennial clickbait reporter longing to work on serious news stories. Unfortunately for him and his producer Zach, their network has zero faith in them and sends them into the Appalachian Mountains in search of Bigfoot.

Along for the ride is their guide, Jefferey, the only cryptozoologist to have encountered the legendary sasquatch in recent times. The three set-out into the wilderness with one goal: find Bigfoot. What could possibly go wrong?

Directed by and starring Zach Lampugh, a former Adult Swim editor, and Brian Emond, a comedian who appeared in the VICEland documentary Flophouse, BIGFOOT HUNTERS is razor sharp comedy-horror that lampoons today’s clickbait internet culture.

SHUDDER Announces the Return of ELVIRA

Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium streamer for horror, thrillers and the supernatural, welcomes the beloved Halloween queen of camp Elvira (Cassandra Peterson) for a marathon event, ELVIRA’S 40th ANNIVERSARY, VERY SCARY, VERY SPECIAL SPECIAL.

Joining Shudder’s annual “61 Days of Halloween” lineup, the special debuts Monday 27th September on demand on Shudder platforms in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. Similar to the cult classic, late-night television series Elvira’s Movie Macabre, which debuted in 1981, Elvira will lend her own blend of witty commentary to a horror movie lineup that includes Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, House on Haunted Hill, The City of the Dead and Messiah of Evil.

“It’s always tough turning 40, but what better way to mark the occasion than a one-night stand with Shudder, the spookiest of streamers? It’s going to be the ultimate Hallow-anniversa-ween bash, and you don’t want to miss it,” said Elvira.

“Elvira is a legend who’s been lighting up our screens and delighting fans for 40 years, and we’re honored to celebrate the ‘Queen of Halloween’s’ fantastic career milestone with her new ‘very special’ special, the perfect treat for Shudder members this Halloween season,” said Craig Engler, GM of Shudder.

Elvira’s 40th Anniversary, Very Scary, Very Special Special includes the following films:

Elvira, Mistress Of The Dark (1988)

Upon arriving in a small town where she has inherited a rundown mansion, a famous horror hostess battles an evil uncle, and townspeople who want her burned at the stake.

House On Haunted Hill (1959)

William Castle's gimmick-laden horror thriller is a fairground fun house come to life. Vincent Price stars as a suave eccentric millionaire married to a beautiful and greedy gold digger. Together they are hosting a party in a sinister haunted house. Five guests are invited to spend the night and each will get $10,000--but only if they survive until morning. The doors are locked at midnight. Will you make it out alive?

The City Of The Dead (1960)

In this atmospheric classic, a professor (horror icon Christopher Lee) sends a student to Whitewood, Massachusetts, the site of 17th century witch burnings. Once there, she learns the satanic secrets that live on.

Messiah Of Evil (1973)

A young woman goes searching for her missing artist father. Her journey takes her to a strange Californian seaside town governed by a mysterious undead cult. William Huyck & Gloria Katz's hypnotic, unsettling independent horror is a must-see gem.

Eco-horror GAIA - on Digital Platforms 27th Sept

Following its UK premiere at FrightFest in August, in which Flickering Myth described the film as “a tantalising eco-horror” with “a sticky fever dream of haunting imagery”, Altitude have released new artwork for the intense and extraordinary horror GAIA ahead of its release on the Altitude.film website and other Digital platforms, from September 27.

A timely and terrifying eco-horror that will appeal to fans of gripping mindbenders Midsommar, The Ruins, Annihilation, and In The Earth, GAIA is a chilling and remarkable assured feature film debut from South African director Jaco Bouwer, with buckets of atmosphere, superbly unsettling effects - and a magnificent central performance from Monique Rockman (Number 37) as a forest ranger who encounters some serious weirdness in the forest - including a fanatical recluse brilliantly played by Carel Nel.

SYNOPSIS: An injured forest ranger on a routine mission is saved by two off-the-grid survivalists. What is initially a welcome rescue grows more suspicious as the son and his renegade father reveal a cultish devotion to the forest. When their cabin is attacked by a strange being it’s clear there is a far greater threat in this unrelenting wilderness.

Recalling genre hits The Survivalist and The Descent, GAIA is strikingly shot, eerie and inventive, a truly disorientating nightmare that will get under your skin and stay with you for days.

GAIA is released on ALTITUDE.FILM and other Digital platforms from the 27th of September.
