Following on from its hugely successful August five-day event, Arrow Video FrightFest is back at the Cineworld, Leicester Square with a bumper two-day Halloween event on Friday 29th Oct and Sat 30th October, presenting nine fear-packed premieres from around the world.  The monstrous movie marathon embraces World, International and UK premieres, as we journey through an unholy celebration of mayhem, menace and murder.
Kicking off the Black Friday gala ghoulishness is the UK premiere of THE SEED, a gut-bursting alien creature feature from Screen International ‘Star of Tomorrow’ director Sam Walker. Walker will be attending, alongside the main cast - Lucy Martin, Sophie Vavasseur and Chelsea Edge - and SFX maestro Dan Martin. This is followed by the UK premiere of BARBARIANS with Game of Thrones star Iwan Rheon. First-time director Charles Dorfman, who will be in attendance, alongside members of the cast, reveals his talent for Pinter-esque dialogue, multi-layered resonance and unsettling tone in this subtle shocker based around a birthday dinner party.

Bringing the evening’s thrills to a fitting climax is the UK premiere of THE POSSESSED. The director of Boar is back with a supernatural shocker inspired by true events and starring John Jarratt from Wolf Creek.

Scary Saturday begins with the UK premiere of hugely informative in-depth documentary PENNYWISE: THE STORY OF IT. With contributions from Stephen King, Tim Curry and Tommy Lee Wallace, this is packed with little known details and rare behind-the-scenes footage, You could say, this is IT!

Next up is the World Premiere of the uniquely visionary LAST SURVIVORS, an intense and ultimately tragic study of isolation and family bonds, starting Stephen Moyer and Alicia Silverstone. Director Drew Mylrea will be joining us.

The lonely, uncanny and often accidentally violent world of childhood is explored with chilling candour in THE INNOCENTS, which has its UK Premiere. Blind writer/director Eskil Vogt’s creepy art house horror has been winning major awards around the world.

Next up is the UK premiere of AMULET, the feature film debut of distinguished actor Romola Garai. Romola will be attending to discuss her freaky and frightening chiller, which marks her as an audacious new horror auteur on the scene.

The 9pm presentation is the UK premiere of VENECIAFRENIA, Spanish horror icon Álex de la Iglesia’s shocking fable about tourism, and the final film is the International premiere of MIRACLE VALLEY, the astounding directorial debut of Greg Sestero, survivor and star of the cult midnight movie The Room.

Last year, Scottish film company Hex Studios announced its new publishing wing Hex Arcana, and released hardback short story anthology 'The Book of Beastly Creatures'.

Next on the Hex Arcana agenda; revive the pulp horror paperback. Their first offering in the collection is a new edition of Sarban's classic alt-history horror 'The Sound of His Horn'. First published in 1952, the much-loved novel imagines a nightmare world where the Nazis won the war, and people are hunted for sport.

The retro edition is inspired by the cult horror paperbacks of the 70s and 80s, and features an original, hand-painted cover by legendary artist of the era, Lisa Falkenstern. Acclaimed horror critic and scholar Kim Newman provides an insightful new foreword to the volume.

According to Editorial Director Sarah Daly, “We're honoured and excited to present a brand new edition of this genre gem as the first volume in our collectable paperback range. With Hex Arcana, we want to reignite the lurid spark of magic that made the pulp horror novels of the past so enticing to read and to own.”

Co-founder Lawrie Brewster added, “At Hex, we're passionate about physical media, about creating tangible objects for horror fans to treasure. We want to help lead the movement for original, painted covers that evoke feeling when you see them on a shelf, or hold them in your hand..

What do you get when Noriaki Yuasa, director of Daiei Studios’ much-beloved Gamera series, makes a monochrome film adaptation of the works of horror manga pioneer Kazuo Umezu (The Drifting Classroom)? The answer is 1968’s The Snake Girl and the Silver-Haired Witch, a fantastically phantasmagorical slice of twisted tokusatsu terror ostensibly made for children that will irreparably traumatise any child that sees it!
A young girl named Sayuri is reunited with her estranged family after years in an orphanage – but trouble lurks within the walls of the large family home. Her mother is an amnesiac after a car accident six months earlier, her sullen sister is confined to the attic and a young housemaid dies inexplicably of a heart attack just before Sayuri arrives… is it all connected to her father’s work studying venomous snakes? And is the fanged, serpentine figure that haunts Sayuri’s dreams the same one spying on her through holes in the wall?
Making its worldwide Blu-ray debut and its home video premiere outside Japan, this rarely-screened, nightmarishly disorienting creepshow not only displays a seldom-seen side of kaiju auteur Yuasa, but its skilful blending of Umezu’s comics (published in English-language markets as Reptilia) arguably anticipates many of the trends seen in J-horror decades later.

Mockumentary BIGFOOT HUNTERS in Cinemas 22 Oct and on Digital 25 Oct

Join the hunt for the legendary sasquatch in hilarious creature feature-comedy mockumentary BIGFOOT HUNTERS.

Meet Brian Emond, a millennial clickbait reporter longing to work on serious news stories. Unfortunately for him and his producer Zach, their network has zero faith in them and sends them into the Appalachian Mountains in search of Bigfoot.

Along for the ride is their guide, Jefferey, the only cryptozoologist to have encountered the legendary sasquatch in recent times. The three set-out into the wilderness with one goal: find Bigfoot. What could possibly go wrong?

Directed by and starring Zach Lampugh, a former Adult Swim editor, and Brian Emond, a comedian who appeared in the VICEland documentary Flophouse, BIGFOOT HUNTERS is razor sharp comedy-horror that lampoons today’s clickbait internet culture.

Joining Shudder’s annual “61 Days of Halloween” lineup, the special debuts Monday 27th September on demand on Shudder platforms in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. Similar to the cult classic, late-night television series Elvira’s Movie Macabre, which debuted in 1981, Elvira will lend her own blend of witty commentary to a horror movie lineup that includes Elvira: Mistress of the Dark, House on Haunted Hill, The City of the Dead and Messiah of Evil.

“It’s always tough turning 40, but what better way to mark the occasion than a one-night stand with Shudder, the spookiest of streamers? It’s going to be the ultimate Hallow-anniversa-ween bash, and you don’t want to miss it,” said Elvira.

Elvira, Mistress Of The Dark (1988)

Upon arriving in a small town where she has inherited a rundown mansion, a famous horror hostess battles an evil uncle, and townspeople who want her burned at the stake.

House On Haunted Hill (1959)

William Castle's gimmick-laden horror thriller is a fairground fun house come to life. Vincent Price stars as a suave eccentric millionaire married to a beautiful and greedy gold digger. Together they are hosting a party in a sinister haunted house. Five guests are invited to spend the night and each will get $10,000--but only if they survive until morning. The doors are locked at midnight. Will you make it out alive?

The City Of The Dead (1960)

In this atmospheric classic, a professor (horror icon Christopher Lee) sends a student to Whitewood, Massachusetts, the site of 17th century witch burnings. Once there, she learns the satanic secrets that live on.

Messiah Of Evil (1973)

A young woman goes searching for her missing artist father. Her journey takes her to a strange Californian seaside town governed by a mysterious undead cult. William Huyck & Gloria Katz's hypnotic, unsettling independent horror is a must-see gem.

Eco-horror GAIA - on Digital Platforms 27th Sept

Following its UK premiere at FrightFest in August, in which Flickering Myth described the film as “a tantalising eco-horror” with “a sticky fever dream of haunting imagery”, Altitude have released new artwork for the intense and extraordinary horror GAIA ahead of its release on the website and other Digital platforms, from September 27.

A timely and terrifying eco-horror that will appeal to fans of gripping mindbenders Midsommar, The Ruins, Annihilation, and In The Earth, GAIA is a chilling and remarkable assured feature film debut from South African director Jaco Bouwer, with buckets of atmosphere, superbly unsettling effects - and a magnificent central performance from Monique Rockman (Number 37) as a forest ranger who encounters some serious weirdness in the forest - including a fanatical recluse brilliantly played by Carel Nel.

SYNOPSIS: An injured forest ranger on a routine mission is saved by two off-the-grid survivalists. What is initially a welcome rescue grows more suspicious as the son and his renegade father reveal a cultish devotion to the forest. When their cabin is attacked by a strange being it’s clear there is a far greater threat in this unrelenting wilderness.

Recalling genre hits The Survivalist and The Descent, GAIA is strikingly shot, eerie and inventive, a truly disorientating nightmare that will get under your skin and stay with you for days.

GAIA is released on ALTITUDE.FILM and other Digital platforms from the 27th of September.

Critically acclaimed VIOLATION debuts on Disc and Digital

The critically acclaimed VIOLATION sees Madeleine Sims-Fewer in the lead role, as well as writer and co-director alongside Dusty Mancinelli in their big-screen writing and directorial debut, which comes to Disc and Digital this month.
Madeleine Sims-Fewer gives a multi-faceted and highly compelling performance alongside Anne Maguire (The Hummingbird Project) and Obi Abili (21 Bridges, Billions) in this darkly enthralling, deeply unsettling rape revengethriller. With her marriage about to implode, Miriam (Sims-Fewer) returns to her hometown in remote Canada to to seek solace in the comfort of her younger sister (Maguire) and brother-in-law (Jesse LaVercombe).

But one evening, a seemingly tiny error of judgement, leads to a catastrophic betrayal, leaving Miriam shocked, devastated and reeling. Believing her sister to be in danger, Miriam feels she must protect her at all costs, but the price of revenge is high and she is about to unravel emotionally and psychologically.

What follows is unflinching in its exploration and portrayal of one woman looking for retribution. Violation displays the depths of depravity which humans will go to try and overcome grief and turmoil.
This daring and disturbing film is set to arrive on Blu-ray and Digital in the UK from Acorn Media International in conjunction with Shudder on 27 September 2021.

Psychological horror-thriller JOHN AND THE HOLE - In UK & Irish cinemas October

From debut filmmaker and artist Pascual Sisto and Academy Award-winning writer Nicolás Giacobone (Oscar winner for his script for 2014’s Birdman), comes a dark fable - imagine Home Alone reworked by Michael Haneke - that dwells in the shadows of adolescent angst and imagination, JOHN AND THE HOLE follows an affluent family that suffers a rude awakening at the hands of the film’s protagonist. With its unique and chilling premise, you’ll be desperate to find out how it ends.

Synopsis: 13 year-old John decides to hold his affluent family captive in an underground bunker behind their house. Left without supervision, John experiences newfound independence, exploring the difficult passage from childhood freedom to adult responsibility in this chilling psychological horror-thriller.

Recalling recent indie psychological horrors A Hole In The Ground, I Am Not A Serial Killer, and Goodnight Mommy, this brilliantly astute and assured debut echoes the work of director Yorgos Lanthimos, but with an eerie, detached style all of its own.

The film co-stars top-rank genre actors Michael C. Hall (Dexter), Jennifer Ehle (Saint Maud), and Taissa Farmiga (American Horror Story), and features a breakout performance by Charlie Shotwell in an enigmatic meditation on what it means to grow up.

JOHN AND THE HOLE will be released in UK and Irish cinemas, and on Digital, 8th October.

Special Edition Blu-Ray NO MAN OF GOD starring Elijah Wood

Following its lauded UK Premiere at FrightFest, 101 Films announces details of Amber Sealey’s NO MAN OF GOD, arriving on Special Edition Blu-ray 25 October 2021, alongside a standard DVD release. The film is now available on digital platforms.

The Special Edition Blu-ray arrives in stunning rigid box packaging featuring newly-commissioned artwork, it includes a set of art cards and fascinating extended interviews with stars Elijah Wood, Luke Kirby and Aleksa Palladino.

Delve into the dark and twisted mind of one of America’s most notorious serial killers – Ted Bundy – in NO MAN OF GOD, a darkly disturbing feature that follows a rarely seen moment in criminal history, after Bundy was sentenced to death and waited to meet his maker, the FBI sent in one of their top analysts to interrogate the murderer to try and find out the full extent of his crimes, his motives and to find answers for his heinous crimes to help the victims’ families.

Directed by Amber Sealey (How to Cheat), based on actual interview transcripts, the critically acclaimed film features outstanding performances from a stellar cast that sees Elijah Wood as FBI analyst Bill Hagmaier, the man tasked by FBI boss (Robert Patrick - Terminator 2, Honest Theif) to get inside the mind of the infamous killer, Ted Bundy played in an unnervingly convincing turn by Luke Kirby.

Bundy’s (Luke Kirby – The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Halloween: Resurrection) reign of terror – that saw him kidnap, rape and murder many young women and girls, across numerous states and many years – ended with multiple death sentences, with the full extent of his crimes still to be realised. Bill Hagmaier (Elijah Wood – The Lord of the Rings, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) was tasked with understanding how truly dangerous Bundy was and to give solace to victims’ families.

Taken from real-life transcripts and revolving around a singular interrogation room, the mind of Bundy is explored in a lesser known period of his life on death row, from 1984 to the day of his execution in 1989.

With time running out before the serial killer is given the chair, will Hagmaier be able to get closure for the families searching for answers?

See the real face of evil in NO MAN OF GOD, a truly terrifying real-crime horror.

Out now on Digital.
