Ratter - UK DVD review.

I was looking forward to reviewing Director Brendon Kramer’s directorial debut RATTER, which is out now in the UK on Digital Download and comes to UK DVD May 4th. However, upon viewing I was disappointed to discover that it’s yet another one of those “found footage” style films, that I am not particularly a fan of.

Set in New York, university student Emma (Ashley Benson - Pixels, TVs Pretty Little Liars) has just moved into a new apartment, seemingly unawhere that her phone, tablet and laptop have all been hacked and her every move is being viewed on the devices cameras by a cyber-stalker.

Made up entirely of footage from her phone and tablet cameras and her laptop webcam, which is what we assume her stalker is watching. Pretty much the entire film is basically just her going about her daily routine. IE, attending class, studying, going shopping, going for drinks, tidying her flat etc, whilst occasionally we can hear the cyber stalker at the other end of the device trying to hack her voice mails and that is pretty much it.

Occasionally, she or a friend gets a cryptic email and she eventually gets the impression that her laptop may have a virus, though nothing really comes of this. At the end, it seems her cyber-stalker may have decided to start stalking her in real life too. But for the best part, it’s just a very dull film showing this girl’s daily routine and the somewhat drawn out ending was far from satisfying and not worth sitting through the previous 1hr 10mins of tedium.

There is a post credits scene showing a bit more of the somewhat ambiguous ending, but I would imagine most people would have switched off long before this point (Indeed, I fast forwarded through most of it).

This review may sound a touch on the harsh side, but I’m not a fan of the found footage genre at the best of times and have become somewhat jaded by the amount of these type of films I’ve been asked to review of late. Which have all been mind-numbingly boring, due to the fact that nothing ever happens in them and they mostly consist of people sat around talking.

Anyway, its out now on UK VOD and the DVD is released May 4th, which contains a couple of deleted scenes as an extra.

"The Zero Boys" - UK BD/DVD review

Out on special edition BD & DVD in the UK this month from Arrow films, comes Niko Masterakis (Island of Death) obscure slasher/action film “The Zero Boys”, which is released in an extras packed BD & DVD combo pack.

A group of paintball enthusiasts (the titular Zero Boys) head off to celebrate their latest victory, by spending the weekend at a remote cabin in the woods, deep in the countryside (well, where else?).

Unfortunately, it seems someone with murderous intentions has been using the property to pick off wayward backpackers and when bad weather cuts the power and phone lines, the group find themselves stalked by a murderous family of back-woodsmen.

Fortunately, the group take their paintball combat training very seriously, and armed with a case of automatic weapons, they set about putting their combat skills into practice, resulting in a rather silly series of confrontations between the group and the murderous family.

Originally released back in 1986, the film is part action, part horror and part dark-comedy and is exceptionally cheesy and over the top. But despite it’s relatively obscure nature, Arrow have done their usual sterling work in compiling extras for this release, which includes....

Audio commentary track with star Kelli Maroney, moderated by Fangoria editor Chris Alexander

Nico Masterakis on Nico Masterakis (27mins) – Light hearted interview in which the director plays both himself and the interviewer asking himself questions about Zero Boys and other films.

Zero Girl feature (8mins) - Kelli Maroney discusses her time on set

Blame it on Rio feature (8mins) – Interview with actress Nicole Rio

Music Videos – A somewhat odd feature, in which a couple of Hans Zimmer’s instrumental scores from the soundtrack are set to images from the film.

Lastly there’s the original theatrical trailer, a gallery of production and behind the scenes stills from the film and if you put the discs into your BD or DVD rom drive you can access the original screenplay.

The case also contains a booklet featuring linear notes on the film by critic James Oliver, which is illustrated throughout with stills and promo material and the sleeve features reversible artwork with the original poster on one side and newly commissioned artwork from Graham Humphries on the other.

Intended to cash in on the slasher boom of the 80s, “The Zero Boys” may not quite be “Deliverance” or “Wrong Turn”, but it’s a rather fun film never-the-less and Arrow have done their usual sterling work bringing this to disc and boasting a brand new 4K scan of the film, is undoubtedly the best its ever looked.

The film is available to purchase now.

"Seize the Night" - Short film review

Model turned actress Emma Dark’s directorial debut short “Seize the Night”, which she also wrote, produced and starred in, is due to be released online for free May 3rd, following its successful run on the festival circuit and I managed to get an advanced peak at it.

Set in London, the film revolves around a vampire assassin, Eva (played by the director herself), who it seems has fallen out with the other members of her coven.

Unconcerned about the other vampires, who are looking at taking her out, she sets out on a killing spree, starting off with a rival werewolf pack. Only to be stopped mid-purge by their leader Tobias (Carey Thring), who has a job offer for her.

Not used to getting job offers from Werewolves, she is forced to put her feelings aside when it seems the job may help get her old coven off her back permanently...

Mashing up elements of the Underworld films (which were clearly an influence) with the likes of Razor Blade Smile. The film boasts some impressive visuals and some excellent special effects. However, being a low budget production, the acting is, as you would expect, not exactly the best. With the cast sounding like they were reading the lines directly off the page.

Also, clocking in at around 12 minutes, it’s certainly a short, short-film, which seemed to end rather abruptly, like it was building to something, then suddenly stopped, with no explanation of what happened in the preceding scene. Kind of like it was intended as an intro to a much larger film (we can but hope).

But anyway, its certainly an impressive debut from Emma Dark, who looks pretty damn awesome as a vampire. The film can be viewed online for free from May 3rd.

Concept trailer for "Abyzou: Taker of Children" and crowdfunding campaign

Lock It Down Productions and Grimbridge Productions are excited to share the proof-of-concept trailer and teaser poster for Abyzou: Taker of Children.

This video was produced with a small but dedicated cast and crew to show what the filmmakers are capable of on a limited budget. It caught the attention of several investors, and the feature film is currently in production and to promote the films Kickstarter campaign.

Synopsis - Hailee and her boyfriend, Dylan, return from a romantic trip to Israel to learn they are expecting a child. Their celebration quickly descends to terror when Hailee becomes a surrogate of the demon Abyzou. Unable to give birth to a child of her own, this ancient evil will stop at nothing to spawn her infernal offspring. The young mother-to-be must draw on the strength of her loved ones to protect her unborn child.

Abyzou: Taker of Children is written and directed by Jordan Pacheco (American Poltergiest). Inspired by a recurring nightmare, Pacheco put an original spin on the mythology of Abyzou, a real demon found in Hebrew folklore.

The cast is made up of promising up-and-comers and experienced favorites in the New England film community, including Zeeva Halpern, Topher Hansson, Jamie Lyn Bagley, Sissy O'Hara, Anacaren Delgado, Jaquelyn Fabian, and Jamie Dufault.

In an effort to create the most realistic practical effects, the makers of Abyzou are currently running a Kickstarter campaign to secure the funds necessary to complete production. Perks start at just $1 and go on to include producer credits, screen-used props, canvas prints, Blu-rays, DVDs, posters and more.

British horror K-SHOP in UK cinemas 22nd July

K-Shop is a gritty urban Sweeney Todd inspired horror set in a British Kebab Shop plagued by binge drinking culture.

After his father is killed in an altercation with drunken thugs, Salah's world is plunged into darkness. Forced into running the family kebab shop alone, Salah struggles to manage the increasingly rowdy night life and when a fight with an angry customer goes fatally wrong, he finds himself with a dead body on his hands.

With no faith in the authorities Salah disposes of the body in the one place he knows best… the kebabs. As the shop's gullible customers devour the new recipe, Salah develops a taste for the kill and seizes the opportunity to turn vigilante and seek revenge on the abusive drunkards plaguing the streets

A gruesome thrill-ride, K-Shop follows in the bloody footsteps of homegrown horror hits such as Severance and Dog Soldiers – making for a film that’s distinctly British with a dark sense of humour. Delivering a cutting social commentary about the sordid side of British nightlife – with a side order of stomach-churning black humour.

THE SURVIVALIST - UK BD and DVD review

Out on UK DVD and BD this week comes Director Stephen Fingleton’s critically acclaimed feature film debut “The Survivalist”  from Bulldog films.

Set in a world, in which civilisation has completely broken down, presumably after some unspecified global catastrophe. Martin McCann (Clash of the Titans) plays the films titular Survivalist, who’s hidden himself away, deep in the woods, hoping to avoid the gangs of marauders who are out killing and stealing from everyone that crosses their paths.

Naturally wary of others, when a woman (Olwen Fouere) and her young daughter (Mia Goth – Everest) chances upon his shelter asking for help, he is initially reluctant to take them in. But with loneliness getting the better of him, and the offer of someone to share his bed seemingly too good to pass up, he finds himself striking up an uneasy friendship with the two. But in a dog-eat-dog world, will his act of quasi-kindness be his undoing, particularly when a gang of raiders turn up?

Somewhat reminiscent of “The Road”, “The Survivalist” is an exceptionally dark, gritty, disturbing dystopian/post apocalyptic thriller, which shows you just how ruthless bad people can be and indeed just how bad otherwise good people can be when placed in an extreme survival situation.

Overall I was very impressed with this and was pleasantly surprised to see genre regular Doug Russel (Let Us Prey) making an appearance. However, the subject matter certainly makes for grim viewing and is not the sort of film you’d want to watch if you’re in need of cheering up.

The film is out now on UK DVD and BD. The screener I watched was devoid of extras, no idea if there are any supplemental features on the retail release.

CHERRY TREE comes to UK DVD May 2nd

From the filmmakers behind the critically acclaimed neo Hammer horror Wake Wood comes another blood-freezing rural nightmare in Cherry Tree. A modern take on the classic Grimm style fairy tale, this visually stunning horror will make your skin crawl!

When Faith discovers her father is dying, she turns to her mentor, the mysteriously alluring Sissy Young. In exchange for a child, Sissy offers to cure her father using the fruit of an ancient cherry tree in a secret ritual that restores life to the dead and dying. With the clock to the child’s birth ticking down and the true intention of Sissy’s plans for humanity becoming more apparent, Faith and her father must stand together as the fate of the world rests on their shoulders

Very much rooted in the folklore of horror classics Rosemary’s Baby, The Wicker Man and Carrie. Cherry Tree is a welcomed addition to the genre and one that is truly terrifying in its unique vision.

Melding Hammer-esque tropes - animal sacrifices and crevice-dwelling centipedes that’ll make your skin crawl - Cherry Tree is a haunting slice of goth terror that you cannot miss!

Six weeks… Six days… Six hours… The child is coming.

CHERRY TREE comes to UK DVD May 2nd from StudioCanal.

DOOMWATCH Feature Film - newly restored UK discs coming June

Doomwatch is one of the great, lost TV programmes, a classic slice of science fiction (with the emphasis as much on science as the fiction), a stunningly prescient homegrown programme that followed hot on the heels of Doctor Who. Famed for its look at issues facing us long before anyone else, not least technological developments, the threats they post and fears over what was happening to the environment, it also set the template for sci-fi programmes for years to come - with the series spinning off into the feature film world.

And now, for the first time on Blu-Ray and in a newly restored DVD version, the feature length outing for the sci-fi thriller Doomwatch arrives on 20 June, courtesy of Screenbound.

Doomwatch, directed by Peter Sasdy (Taste the Blood of Dracula, Hands of the Ripper) takes the series one step further and, thanks to this pristine restoration looks better than ever.

Following an oil tanker spill near the island of Balfe, Doctor Del Shaw (Ian Bannen - Waking Ned, To Walk with Lions) of Doomwatch, the British government's environmental monitoring organisation, is sent o investgate its effects on the remote fishing village. But he soon discovers strange happenings abound in the community.

The islands men folk are displaying signs of agression, insolence and unusual facial deformities that appear to be transforming them into near Neanderthals. The villagers are suspicious of the stranger in their midst, but with the help of a local teacher (Judy Geeson - The Eagle Has Landed), the doctor soon discovers the cause, but can he find a cure.

The film co stars Percy Herbert (Bridge on the river Kwai, Guns of Navarone), George Sanders (All About Eve, Rebecca) and Jean Trend (Z Cars, Dixon of Doc Green).

This marks the momentous return of the Emmy- and Golden Globe® Award-winning pop culture phenomenon, which remains one of the longest-running sci-fi series in network television history.
