Arrow Video gets "Demolished" this December...

December 2024 releases from Arrow Video

DEMOLITION MAN - On Limited Edition 4K UHD

Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes go head-to-head in this classic sci-fi/action blockbuster from Joel Silver, the producer of Die Hard and The Matrix.

In 2032, arch criminal Simon Phoenix (Snipes) awakens from a 35-year deep freeze in CryoPrison to find a world where crime is almost non-existent – a serene utopia ripe for the taking.

With the police no longer equipped to deal with his 90s-style brutality, they revive ‘Demolition Man’ Sgt. John Spartan (Stallone), the no-holds-barred police officer unjustly sentenced to CryoPrison who originally took Phoenix down.

Old-school cop against old-school criminal, settling their scores on the streets of San Angeles? The future won’t know what’s hit it.

With a script co-written by Daniel Waters (Heathers, Batman Returns) and a supporting cast that includes Denis Leary, Benjamin Bratt, and Sandra Bullock in her breakout role, Demolition Man is an awesome mix of action and humour!

THE ADDICITON - On Limited Edition 4K UHD

The mid-nineties were a fertile period for the vampire movie. Big-name stars such as Tom Cruise and Eddie Murphy flocked to genre, as did high-calibre filmmakers like Francis Ford Coppola, veterans Wes Craven and John Landis, independents Michael Almereyda and Jeffrey Arsenault, and up-and-comers Quentin Tarantino and Guillermo del Toro.

Amid the fangs and crucifixes, Abel Ferrara reunited with his King of New York star Christopher Walken for The Addiction, a distinctly personal take on creatures of the night.

Philosophy student Kathleen (Lili Taylor, The Conjuring) is dragged into an alleyway on her way home from class by Casanova (Annabella Sciorra, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle) and bitten on the neck. She quickly falls ill but realises this isn’t any ordinary disease when she develops an aversion to daylight and a thirst for human blood…

Having made a big-budget foray into science fiction two years earlier with Body Snatchers, Ferrara’s approach to the vampire movie is in a lower key. Shot on the streets of New York, like so many of his major works – including The Driller Killer, Ms. 45 and Bad Lieutenant – and beautifully filmed in black and white, THE ADDICITON sees the filmmaker on his own terms and at his very best: raw, shocking, intense, intelligent, masterful.

The Krites have landed! Carnivorous creatures from outer space! Vicious vermin with very sharp teeth! The beloved sci-fi/comedy-horror franchise makes its UK Blu-ray debut in this special edition box set from Arrow Video.

Two years later, CRITTERS 2 sees the Krites come back for seconds as leftover eggs hatch and attack the rural town of Grover's Bend. Directed by Mick Garris (Sleepwalkers) with a script co-written by David Twohy (Pitch Black)CRITTERS 2 is one big ball of toothy delight.

Celebrated horror author and screenwriter David J. Schow (The Crow) comes aboard for CRITTERS 3, bringing the Krites to the big city. Marking the feature film debut of none other than Leonardo DiCaprio (Django Unchained), it was shot simultaneously with the darker, less comedic CRITTERS 4, in which the ferocious furballs battle series stalwart Charlie (Don Opper, Android) in outer space, featuring a cast that includes Angela Bassett (Strange Days) and Brad Dourif (Child’s Play).

THE LAST VIDEO STORE - On Limited Edition Blu-ray

A love letter to video rental stores and the B-movie treasures that lined their walls, Cody Kennedy & Tim Rutherford’s debut feature, THE LAST VIDEO STORE, is a genre-loving blast of pure joy: “a real treasure trove for genre fans, both new and old.” (Kat Hughes, THN)

When her estranged father passes, twenty-something Nyla is tasked with the thing she hates the most – cleaning up his mess. Left behind are a collection of VHS tapes, and with them, the burden of returning them to “Blaster Video” a time capsule to an era in which cover art and a catchy movie title were king, run by Kevin, a human encyclopaedia of VHS history and a friend of her father.

Amongst the returns is an unknown tape, a movie not even Kevin has heard of. Was this the last movie Nyla’s father watched before he died? The mystery is too much to resist. But when Kevin and Nyla press play, they unwittingly activate a long-dormant curse and a series of classic cinematic villains are plucked from B-movie heaven and hell to be unleashed into the store itself!

With style, charm and note perfect performances, THE LAST VIDEO STORE is a must for physical media fans. An elegy to the cinephilic havens of movie wisdom that could once be found on every corner, and the heroes like Kevin who staffed them.

Director Howard Ford talks about upcoming films ESCAPE and DARKGAME

Ahead of the Digital release of Howard J Ford’s ESCAPE on September 30 and DARKGAME on Oct 23, the UK’s busiest indie filmmaker reveals his love of exotic locations, the demands and why he secretly wants to run a coffee shop.

Q) Your 10th feature, ESCAPE, coming out on Sept 30, is a female led kidnap  revenge thriller, with hints of 70’s exploitation. Did you have fun making it?

Well I wanted Escape to be an absolute blast in every respect as it marked my 10th film out the gate; Sexy -  horrific – nail biting – thrilling -  and believe it or not, I even fancied a bit of humour!  But ultimately it’s about these women in a horrific situation, taking power and fighting back! I absolutely intended to have fun doing it too – the location recce’s were super fun and I had a lovely little team and I believe they had a good laugh – I can’t remember half of it, I was in a bit of a filmy bubble at the time!

Q) DARKGAME, which you made before ESCAPE, unites you with Gossip Girl star Ed Westwick. Tell us a bit about the film and your experience making it.

Ed was honestly super to work with; extremely focussed and with a brilliant energy. His character is very different from Chuck Bass in Gossip Girl and he is up against a sadistic killer played brilliantly by Andrew P Stephen. We had a cracking team and my producing partner, Tom George, was super supportive. It’s deliciously twisted with standout performances.

Q) Notoriously busy, you’ve just completed your 11th film feature, cannibalistic thriller RIVER OF BLOOD, which reunites you with THE DEAD 2: INDIA star Joseph Millson.  What was it like working together again?

It was my ambition to take a break, but I still haven’t gotten around to that!  Joseph Millson is always great fun and is such a wonderful screen actor – it was tricky filming Kayaking scenes on the rivers and mangroves of Thailand, but it’s such a beautiful place and that really shows on screen and it was an epic journey! It also start Sarah Alexandra Marks and Louis James from Escape and a wonderful cast and crew from Tom Boyle,  the writer of my previous film The Ledge.

Q) You rose to prominence, alongside your brother, with The DEAD and THE DEAD 2. Were you surprised with the reaction to both films?

I’ll be honest, Jon and I were very frustrated with all the compromises we had to make because of Malaria, Knifepoint muggings; being held at gunpoint etc –  not even making it to location half the time, all of that stuff was quite scarring and we knew the reactions could have been even better had we been able to achieve our original vision. Maybe we’ll get the chance someday but we’re grateful to the fans who support The Dead films and when we finally get the rights back from the distributors who haven’t been paying us we might just make another…

Q) Looking back as an independent filmmaker, what can you say is your proudest achievement?

Not getting killed! That has nearly happened a fair few times and I’m grateful to still be alive! Never Let Go I felt proud of and it still plays on TV all over the world and it was another tricky shoot that we had to get done incredibly fast in some real tough places. I was proud to have been able to make The Lockdown Hauntings with literally no crew members at all – just me and actors. I feel that the film never got its fair share of exposure for what it was – it got knocked a lot critically on its release with people complaining it didn’t have enough special effects etc etc. It was made in the midst of lockdown by one person! Give me a break! Ha

Q) The choice of locations seems crucial to you. Why is this?

For me location is incredibly important – they are like a character in themselves and  I feel I owe it to my audience to take them somewhere different. After all, most people are in a room when they watch a film. I feel I should take them somewhere else. With Escape, I want them to enjoy the desert island locations – like they are going on a sunny holiday. Just with a bit of kidnapping and whatnot!

Q) Your films set out to thrill people. Are you a thriller-seeker?

I think life is short and we need to get out there now and do stuff. Let’s face it, by the time we’re able to make life changing decisions we’re probably only going to get 50 decent summers/winters, whatever. You need to get out and do stuff now!

Q) Did you ever contemplate a career besides filmmaking?

Often. I fantasise about just serving coffee in a quaint shop to pleasant people or doing gardening or something! The film business is ridiculous; it’s heart breaking all the time. We get an intense year or two of work, doing our best on something to make a piece of entertainment; compromising so many aspects of your lives and others  to get it done, then the moment it comes out, people can’t wait to jump online and tear it apart. They often pirate (steal) your film and THEN on top of that tell you how bad it is!!  I reckon that happens less in coffee shops – and at least if the coffee does turn out bad,  you could just quickly brew another!

Q) What would be one crucial piece of advice you would offer an ambitious young filmmaker?

Use what you have. If you know an amazing location – put that in your film. If you have access to an amazing prop – put that in etc. Write down all the striking and interesting things you have access to then get them in! Also, when you finally get to day one of your actual shoot get on with it! Get that first shot and move on. If you don’t get your film done, you won’t get to make many of them.

Q) Finally, what’s next?

I’m hoping to get a little break but I’m attached to another horror and two thrillers so let’s see which one the universe intends to green light first! Thanks to all who watch Escape and DarkGame and everyone involved in bringing these to the screen!

ESCAPE is available to own or rent on digital download from Sept 30 from all main platforms.

DARKGAME will be available to own or rent on digital download from October 21st. from all main platofrms including AppleTV, Google, Microsoft, Amazon and  SkyStore.

Elizabeth Sankey’s Documentary WITCHES - Streaming on MUBI, November

MUBI, the global distributor, streaming service and production company, has announced the global streaming release date for Elizabeth Sankey’s (Boobs, Romantic Comedy) documentary film, WITCHES

WITCHES had its World Premiere at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival and will have its UK Premiere at the 2024 London Film Festival, will stream exclusively on MUBI globally from 22 November 2024.

The film is a profound exploration of the unexpected yet compelling connections between postpartum mental health and the history and portrayal of witches in western society and popular culture.

Following on from her critically acclaimed feature Romantic Comedy, released by MUBI in 2019, Sankey now uses her trademark video essay style to turn the camera inward, focusing on her own experiences with postpartum anxiety and depression.

Using her own experience of being admitted to a psychiatric ward after the birth of her son, Sankey intertwines personal narrative with historical and cinematic footage. The film features interviews with medical professionals, historians, and fellow sufferers, offering a multifaceted perspective on how women with mental health issues have been stigmatized and misunderstood over time, while creating her own coven of women to reclaim their stories.

WITCHES is produced by Ardisson, Chiara Ventura and Jeremy Warmsley - Executive produced by Efe Cakarel, Jason Ropell, Bobby Allen, Thomas C. Hoegh. Cinematography is by Chloë Thomson and the score is composed by Jeremy Warmsley.

Mayhem Film Festival announces full festival line-up

With just a month to go before Mayhem’s 20th edition takes place at Broadway, Nottingham (17-20 October), the team is excited to reveal this year’s full festival line-up. With a mix of premieres, previews, classics, and not one but two shorts programmes, there is something for every fan of genre cinema in this year’s programme.

Mayhem Film Festival will open on Thursday 17 October with Ariane Louis-Seize’s Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person, the tale of a young vampire unable to kill who sees an opportunity when meeting a young suicidal man. Rounding off the first night will be David Moreau’s fast-paced single shot horror, MADS in which a young man’s life of partying takes a sinister turn when he encounters a tormented and injured woman.

Friday 18 October sees day 2 of the festival, which will open with Jong-seok Yoon’s Confession - a mystery thriller following a man accused of a locked-room murder and his lawyer who is trying to uncover the truth. Next up, and previously announced, will be Christina Hornisher’s astounding, once-forgotten first feature, Hollywood 90028 (1973) in which an aspiring filmmaker’s disillusionment turns murderous. We’ll then head to the highly original world of Joe DeBoer and Kyle McConaghy’s Dead Mail where a kidnapped synthesiser technician manages to get a note to a post office investigator, setting off a deadly chain of events.

We’ll move into the evening with Michiel Blanchart’s relentless, action thriller Night Call, in which a young locksmith finds himself at the heart of a dangerous drug deal gone wrong, before closing the day with Daddy’s Head. The new film from Benjamin Barfoot (Double Date, Mayhem 2017) tells the story of a young boy and his stepmother who, following the untimely death of the boy’s father, are visited by a disturbing creature.

We’ll open Saturday 14 October with Cody Kennedy and Tim Rutherford’s The Last Video Store - a VHS era homage in which a young woman’s attempt to return some tapes to a video store takes a turn for the worse.

We’ll then head into Adilkhan Yerzhanov’s Mad Max-like, Steppenwolf, where a mother’s search for her missing child sees her reluctantly partner up with a cruel former detective, before delving into the first Short Film Showcase of this year’s festival.

The evening will start with Jean-Luc Herbulot’s supernatural thriller Interstate. The director of Saloum takes us on a deadly road trip where a hit-man’s attempt to get out of town with the woman he loves takes a sinister turn.

We will close the day with a screening of Wes Craven’s The People Under the Stairs (1991) - a sharp commentary on landlords, gentrification and class wars.

Our last day will open with the UK Premiere of Michael Duignan’s The Paragon - a uniquely Kiwi deadpan comedy following a failed tennis coach on a quest to become psychic to take revenge on the driver who ran him over.

We’ll then head to the action-packed Dark Match from director Lowell Dean (Wolfcop) - the story of a small-time wrestling company hired for a gig in a small town only to find themselves at the mercy of a mysterious cult leader, before delving into our second Short Film Showcase of this 20th edition.

As we move into our final evening, we’ll present the UK Premiere of Luis Prieto’s Last Stop Rocafort St in which a young woman’s new job in a Barcelona subway station opens up the door to a terrifying legend.

We’ll close the festival with the new film from Canadian collective RKSS, Wake Up. The makers of Turbo Kid are back with a violent slasher film set in a homeware superstore where a group of teenagers who have set up camp for the night must face a deranged security guard.

Full Festival Passes are still available for £95, giving you access to all films and events at this year’s festival. Catalyst Studios are thrilled to announce that their critically acclaimed British horror BROKEN BIRD will be coming to digital platforms from 20th September.

Sybil Chamberlain is a quiet, creative soul. Her hobbies are taxidermy and poetry. She works in a funeral parlor with the deceased. She likes dead people. They understand her.

At just ten years old, she experienced trauma in a tragic accident which took away the family she adored. Now, an aching loneliness prevails in a void which she seeks to fill. But poetry and a vivid imagination provide an escape from the harsh realities of a lonely life.

Reality and reason are slipping away from Sybil and her ‘dark desires’ become more and more insatiable. Her fascination with the dead takes a dark and strange twist. And in a horrific climax of gothic proportions, she finds her own kind of happiness and contentment with the people she keeps as company - dead people.

BROKEN BIRD marks the feature directorial debut of Joanne Mitchell (Actress - Before Dawn, Bait, TV's Emmerdale), and recently celebrated its world premiere opening this years FrightFest, where it was named as one of Metro's top films to add to your watchlist. Described as "positively captivating" by Film Stories, this is a debut not to be missed.

Sybil is masterfully portrayed by Rebecca Calder (Kandahar/Memory) in a riveting nuanced performance in which she captures all of Sybil’s quirky, unsettling behavior. She is supported by an incredible cast featuring James Fleet (Four Weddings & a Funeral), Sacharissa Claxton (Avenue 5) and Jay Taylor (Misfits).

Arrow Video welcomes you to the delirious, diabolical and demented world of Álex de la Iglesia

ACCION MUTANTE, THE DAY OF THE BEAST and PERIDITA DURANGO make their 4K UHD debut in the UK this month in the stunning box set, LOVE, DEATH & APOCALYPSE: THREE FILMS BY ÁLEX DE LA IGLESIA from Arrow Video.

Outrageous, absurdist, grotesque! Often hilarious, always stylish, and utterly unpredictable, the films of Spanish director Álex de la Iglesia are an exhilarating shock to the cinematic system.

Produced by legendary provocateur Pedro Almodóvar, de la Iglesia’s debut feature ACCION MUTANTE is a violent sci-fi black comedy set in a post-apocalyptic world where attractive people hold all the power and a terrorist group, who see themselves as mutants, take arms to rid the world of their superficial oppressors.

With his second feature,
THE DAY OF THE BEAST (El día de la bestia) de la Iglesia delivered one of the greatest horror comedies of all time as a Catholic priest joins forces with a heavy metal fan, and the host of a popular occult TV show to kill the Antichrist on Christmas Eve. A critical and commercial success around the world, THE DAY OF THE BEAST paved the way for gonzo action-crime-horror

PERIDITA DURANGO, (aka Dance with the Devil) a Spanish-US-Mexican co-production based on a novel by Barry Gifford (author of Wild at Heart). Starring Rosie Perez (Do the Right Thing), a then little known Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men) and James Gandolfini (The Sopranos), Perdita Durango is a twisted tale of love, guns, drugs, voodoo ceremonies, and refrigerated foetuses...

Making their UK debut on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray with a wealth of new and archival extras, Arrow Video welcomes you to the delirious, diabolical and demented world of Álex de la Iglesia. Not for the faint of heart!
