THE HOWLING - makes its UK BD debut October.

STUDIOCANAL is excited to announce that the darkly comic horror classic THE HOWLING – the film which changed the look and feel of werewolf movies for years to come when it first released back in 1981 – gnaws its way onto newly restored edition DVD, Digital Download and, for the first time in the UK, Blu Ray on 9th October 2017. Along with the film, the release also features an hour of brand new extra features and special content.

Directed by Joe Dante (Gremlins) with a screenplay by John Sayles (Lone Star) and groundbreaking special effects by Rob Bottin (The Thing, The Fog, Total Recall), THE HOWLING has been stunningly restored for a new generation of horror fans. Graphically violent, sexually explicit and nightmarishly intense, it remains one of the most original werewolf movies of the eighties, spawning seven follow-up films and three novels, and sits firmly alongside An American Werewolf In London and Wolfen as hugely influential features in the genre.

After an intense confrontation with a serial killer, news anchor Karen White (Dee Wallace) is left traumatised and suffering from amnesia. In need of recovery, Karen takes refuge within “The Colony”, a country retreat organised by her psychiatrist Dr Waggner (Patrick Macnee). But things at “The Colony” aren’t as idyllic as they originally seemed and as blood curdling screams break the midnight silence, Karen’s memories slowly begin to come into focus.

With its extraordinary transformation scene, its startling links between animalistic violence and sexuality and its pioneering use of special make-up effects and prosthetics (Rob Bottin’s first break away project from mentor Rick Baker who himself would provide effects for An American Werewolf In London), THE HOWLING now returns to draw new viewers into its bloodcurdling cult of loyal followers.

Eat Locals - Review

Actor Jason Flemyng (Snatch, TV’s Primeval) goes behind the camera this time to bring us his directorial debut with the vampire comedy “Eat Locals”, which had its UK premiere at this years Frightfest and comes to UK VOD September and to UK disc in October.

A group of vampires, which includes genre regular Tony Curran (Underworld : Rise of the Lycans), and TV actresses Freema Agyeman (Dr Who) and Annette Crosbie (One Foot in the Grave) are having a meeting at a remote farmhouse and welcoming their unwitting new member, Sebastian (Billy Cook – Hooligan Factory), into the fold.

Unfortunately, it seems that Sebastian isn’t too interested in becoming a creature of the night, which causes a number of problems with what to do with him next.

But trying to escape proves no easy task, as not only are the vampires a lot quicker on their feet, but it turns out the whole place is surrounded by an elite special forces unit, planning to wipe out everyone inside. Plus there are the farm owners, who the vampires have trussed up in the cellar, played by Dexter Fletcher (Layer Cake) and Ruth Jones (TVs Gavin and Stacey) who turn out to be just as blood thirsty as their vampire captors.

Chaos and hilarity subsequently ensue as the soldiers attack, the farm owners try to escape and poor Sebastian doesn’t know which way to run.

Also starring Charlie Cox (TVs Dare Devil) and Vincent Regan (Lockout), "Eat Locals" is brilliant fun. It's action packed, bloody hilarious and easily one of my favourite films of the year so far! If you enjoyed “What we do in the Shadows” you’ll love this. The end credits also tease us with the promise of a sequel. So lets hope that gets made soon!

"Eat Locals" comes to UK VOD Digital outlets Sept 1, followed by its Disc and other Digital releases October 30th.

DEMONS - in selected US theaters and on VOD this Oct!

The devil comes to town this October when Demons, written, directed and starring Miles Doleac, hits select US theaters and VOD from Uncork’d Entertainment.

A psychological thriller that marries elements of The Exorcist, The Shining and The Big Chill, Demons tells of a celebrated fiction writer and former priest (Doleac, “American Horror Story”, The Hollow) who, along with his wife, are tormented by the ghost of her late sister, as the details of her grisly death are slowly uncovered.

Eight years ago, Father Colin Hampstead oversaw an aborted exorcism that resulted in the gruesome death of seventeen-year-old Jewel Grant, in rural Louisiana. The deceased girl’s older sister, Kayleigh, grew immediately attached to Hampstead and sought him out, at first for grief counseling and then, for much more.

Eight years later, Hampstead has left the priesthood and become a celebrated fiction writer, specializing in stories about the occult, and he and Kayleigh, now his wife, have a beautiful daughter and run a well-known bed and breakfast in Savannah, GA. When the couple agrees to host a wedding for one of Colin’s college friends, what begins as a Big Chill-type reunion turns into something much more macabre, as the seemingly omnipresent  ghost of her dead sister Jewel compels Kayleigh to engage in bizarre, destructive behaviors that endanger the lives of both her friends and herself.

Andrew Divoff (Wishmaster), John Schneider (Lake Placid 2, The Dukes of Hazzard), Lindsay Anne Willams (The Hollow), Steven Brand (Hellraiser : Revelations), Kristina Emerson (NCIS : New Orleans), and Gary Grubbs (Free State of Jones) co-star star in a powerful goosebump-stirring new spookfest from Historia Films, the makers of The Hollow and The Historian.

Demons is in selected US theaters and on VOD October 6th.

FINAL RECALL - UK DVD review

Independence Day meets Rambo (or should that be Blade?), as Wesley Snipes battles aliens deep in the woods in “Final Recall”, which is out now on UK Disc and Digital.

A group of teens are spending the weekend at a remote woodland cabin, when news reports start coming in of alien spacecraft descending on the earth and abducting people en mass.

The group subsequently find themselves being stalked by strange alien creatures in the woods. But with their car wrecked and no means of calling for help, escaping proves no easy task.

However, seems the aliens aren’t the only things out hunting. Enter Wesley Snipes as a deranged backwoodsman, who seems to know exactly what’s going on and has been busy preparing for this day, who quickly starts turning the tables on the alien foe.

But even if they survive the night, what awaits them in the morning when the military arrive?

Looking like it had a lot more money for what was obviously a mid-budget production FINAL RECALL boasts some impressive special effects and Wesley Snipes is awesome as ever as the semi-psychotic hunter.  For the most part the movie plays like a low budget “Predator”, though things seemed to slow down towards the end after some of group get abducted and the film changes gear showing their attempts to escape captivity.

If you enjoy low budget action films, you’ll probably want to check this out.

The screener I viewed did not contain any supplemental material, however the full release is said to contain the following extras...

Mayhem Film Festival announces ZEPPELIN VS PTERODACTYLS, HABIT and MAYHEM

With less than two months to go before the festival’s 13th edition, Mayhem is proud to announce two new titles and a special event as part of their programme.

Building on the success of The Unquenchable Thirst of Dracula from the 2015 edition, Mayhem Film Festival will present a new live stage reading of an unmade Hammer production – the legendary "Zeppelin vs Pterodactyls"

Based on a thought-lost outline from the Hammer Scripts Archive, now faithfully expanded into a full-length script by Mayhem Co-Director, Steven Sheil (Mum & Dad, Dead Mine), "Zeppelin vs Pterodactyls" will take you on an epic sci-fi adventure to a lost world beyond the arctic snows where prehistoric creatures may still roam.

If you couldn’t attend the 2015 production, expect an immersive ‘screenless cinema’ experience with actors bringing the screenplay vividly to life. This one of a kind event is made possible with thanks to Hammer Films and CATH (Cinema and Television History) Research Centre at DeMontfort University.

In addition to this special live event, Mayhem is proud to announce two more films from their 2017 line-up, including Simeon Halligan’s "Habit". In this subversive film from the director of White Settlers, a young man working in a massage parlour discovers something dangerous and sinister lurking in the mysterious room no.9. Director Simeon Halligan will present the film and take part in a post-screening Q&A.

Wrapping up this second wave of announcements is Shudder's fittingly titled "Mayhem", from American director Joe Lynch. Beyond the endless amusement of Mayhem screening at Mayhem, the film is a relentlessly fun corporate horror in which Derek Cho (Steven Yeun) finds himself trapped within the law firm he has just been fired from, as a super virus making people lose all of their inhibitions condemns the building to quarantine.

Mayhem Film Festival will take place at Broadway, Nottingham on 12-15 October 2017. Early Bird passes are still available for a limited time only at the discounted rate of £65.

MAYHEM, is the explosive story of a dangerous virus, that prevents the infected from controlling their inhibitions, and is discovered in a corporate law building, the very same firm that recently cleared an infected man on murder charges. When a quarantine is issued and the building goes on lockdown, all hell breaks loose inside, while a disgruntled employee (Steven Yeun of The Walking Dead) and an irate client (Samara Weaving) must fight and even kill their way to the top to “have a word” with the corrupt executives who wronged them before time runs out.

MAYHEM received its World Premiere at the 2017 South by Southwest Film Festival to critical praise. Shudder has taken all rights in the United Kingdom, Ireland, in addition to streaming rights in North America, as announced at Cannes Film Festival in May.

BETTER WATCH OUT is the wicked Christmastime thriller from strong new genre directorial voice Chris Peckover. Shudder has taken streaming rights in North America.

COLD HELL (Die Hölle) is the new film from Oscar-winning Austrian director Stefan Ruzowitzky. When he meets Tess, played by Fabianne Theresa, the two quickly become romantically entwined, but their romance is threatened by a mysterious game that draws the two deeper and deeper into its void of slime and Cronenbergian horror. Oz soon finds himself facing off against the eight-bit portal to the cosmos, to both save himself and his newfound love. Shudder has taken all rights in North America and United Kingdom, Ireland.

STILL/BORN is the debut feature of Canadian director Brandon Christianson, co-written and produced by Colin Minihan of IT STAINS THE SANDS RED. Shudder has taken streaming rights in North America and all rights in United Kingdom, Ireland.

IT STAINS THE SANDS RED is the new film from director Colin Minihan and co-writer Stuart Ortiz, aka The Vicious Brothers. Following their massive hit GRAVE ENCOUNTERS and the sci-fi thriller EXTRATERRESTRIAL, IT STAINS THE SANDS RED proves to be one of the most the unusual, ingenious and moving undead movies ever as Las Vegas wild child Molly finds herself stranded in the desert with a ravenous zombie hot on her heels. Top Knot Detective continues its worldwide festival run with FrightFest 2017

Top Knot Detective is about to make its English debut at the Prince Charles Cinema in London on the 28th of August 2017 as part of the 2017 Horror Channel Fright Fest.

In the early 90's, a little known Japanese Samurai/Detective series hit Australia where it quickly became a cult hit. In Japan it was called ‘Ronin Suiri Tentai’ (translation: ‘Deductive Reasoning Ronin’) but in Australia it was affectionately known as ‘Top Knot Detective’. A wild and crazy series about a wandering samurai doing battle with sexy ninja, giant robots and the occasional throbbing penis monster.

Created by Aaron McCann and Dominic Pearce as a throwback to the films and TV shows that were broadcast in the 90s, this “documentary” tells the story of director/star: Takashi Takamoto, who couldn’t act, can’t fight and most certainly can’t write a TV show. Luckily through various underworld connections, he had the means to turn himself into a superstar - but there was a price to pay for letting his ego run wild.

SCREENING INFO:
4pm - Monday 28th of August, 2017 - Prince Charles Cinema, London - Tickets:

"Charismata" - A Movie Review.

Andy Collier and Tor Mian’s supernatural shocker "Charismata" recently had its premiere and they were kind enough to send me a screener copy to look at prior to its submission to the festival circuit.

Set in and around London, the film centres around fledgling Police Detective Rebecca Faraway (Sarah Beck Mather, who you may recognise from her role as Nurse Dixon TVs “The Royal”) who it seems is having a tough time settling into the job and putting up with all the station banter and jibes that go with it.

When she and her partner, Detective Smith (Andonis Anthony – "Soldiers of the Damned", though "Hollyoaks" fans may recognise him from his role as Phil Sharp), are sent to investigate what appears to be a ritualistic murder. It marks the start of a series of grizzly discoveries in which people are being killed and various body parts removed as part of some sort of bizarre satanic ritual.

But this is no ordinary serial whack-job behind the killings, turns out that dark forces are at work and the perpetrator is attempting to summon up something decidedly evil that no amount of police training will ever prepare them for.

Best described as "Prime Suspect" meets "Hellraiser", with a bit of "Blood Feast" and "Seven" thrown into the mix, the film is both part Detective drama and part Supernatural thriller. The movie was surprisingly very good for what was obviously a low budget production, which benefitted from its use of regular working actors, who all put in solid performances.

The film is a bit of a slow burner though, as you’re never quite sure whether there is something supernatural at work, or if its just part Detective Faraway’s paranoia, as she struggles to cope with her new role, a bitter divorce and an addiction to prescription meds.

The film had its first press screening in London back in June and was well received and the film makers are currently in talks about a distribution deal. If you get chance to check this one out on festival circuit, do so!
