Sci-Fi London Oktoberfest!

London is in the midst of a film festivals deluge, with both the behemoth that is London Film Festival and the independently-minded Raindance offering something for every taste (and a few tasteless offerings), including some sci-fi titles such as the SCI-FI-LONDON co-production THE SEARCH FOR SIMON on 1 October. If you missed it at SFL13, then now's the chance to see it at Vue Piccadilly (aka Apollo). However, for dedicated programming from (and with) a host of discerning, like-minded folks, SCI-FI-LONDON has to be your main destination. Forget the allure of the West End, it's all happening out East from 11- 13 October.

For fans of Japanese cinema there's the world premiere of the HD restoration of Shi'ya Tsukamoto's surreal and violent TOKYO FIST, in a double bill with his cult classic TETSUO: The Iron Man. Showing on Saturday evening they are just the thing to get you energised for the Animé all-nighter of WOLF CHILDREN, PERFECT BLUE and three EVANGELION movies (1.11, 2.22, 3.0). 

Other premieres are:star-studded, post-apocalyptic thriller THE COLONY from director Jeff Renfroe, starring Laurence Fishburne, Bill Paxton and Kevin Zegers; and BATTLE OF THE DAMNED, where Dolph Lundgren leads an army of robots against a zombie hoard (what's not to love?)

 

Other films on offer are the award-winning CHANNELING (winner of our Best Feature Award – so you know it must be good), which is why we are showing it again, plus with Google Glass now a reality, it is all the more pertinent.

 

Also screening is festival friend, Vincenzo Natali’s new film, HAUNTER, a brilliantly crafted and disturbing feature.

For fans of the brilliant Stanislaw Lem, there's a free screening of the classic 1963 Czech film IKARIE XB-1. This is a must see for all hard-core sci-fi fans, so make sure you reserve tickets, even though it is free.

As for the all-nighters, there's the aforementioned Animé offering, a selection of truly dreadful sci-fi films getting the MST3K treatment and a selection of alien invasion films to celebrate the imminent release of the XCOM: ENEMY WITHIN game.

The Curse of Elizabeth Faulkner at The Charing Cross Theatre, London.

Starting October 3rd, Charing Cross Theatre will play host to 'The Curse of Elizabeth Faulkner' which has just completed a successful run at Edinburgh Fringe.

The play is a rip roaring, thunder soaked gothic farce, from the sand blasted foothills of Peru to the haunted back streets of Edwardian London. Part Grand Guignol, part One Man Two Guvners.

 

This story, told for the first time and by the kind permissions of the Faulkner and Thorndike Estates, is the true and terrifying tale of a foredoomed young gentleman who convinces an impoverished undertaker to dig up his great grandmother, in order to rid himself of a terrible and somewhat expensive, family curse.

 

A blistering thrill ride through old England and over dead Empires. Also included is a very useful tip on how to avoid an exploding pancreas, how not to speak to dead people, and a rather interesting fact about the hill tribes of the South Pacific.

The cast includes Mr. Joshua Haberfield as the cursed hero Faulkner, our dashing and over excited undertaker Thorndike played by Mr. Neil Henry. The delicate yet deadly Miss Harriette Sym is Miss Francis and Mr. Anil Desai completes as the mysterious and conflicted Peruvian of no fixed abode.

'The Curse of Elizabeth Faulkner' will be running every Thurs, Fri and Sat from 03/10/13 - 23/11/13.

The Witches - UK BD/DVD review.

Hammer films lesser known cult classic “The Witches”, starring Joan Fontain, has recently been restored and digitally remasted by Studio Canal for their upcoming Blu-Ray/DVD release, which will also be premiering at the London Film festival this month (October).

 

In this, Joan Fontaine plays Gwen Mayfield. A devout schoolteacher who’s been recovering from an extremely nasty ordeal she experienced in Africa, after angering the local witchdoctors, whilst she was out there doing missionary work.

 

Offered a teaching position in the quintessentially English village of Heddaby, it seems like the perfect opportunity for her to start over again. But it isn’t too long before she begins to suspect something’s amiss in the village.

 

It starts off with a couple of mysterious “accidents”, which don’t seem to be so accidental, yet these are casually brushed aside by the local authorities. She also notices that the villagers seem to behave rather strangely around one of the girls at her school.

 

Suspecting the locals may be involved in some sort of occult, or pagan practices, Gwen starts to look into these incidents herself, but is attacked in her home by someone wearing an African witchdoctors mask. It seems someone is trying to cause her to have another break down, so that no one will take her concerns seriously.

 

But what is really going on in the village, and why were her employers really so keen on hiring her?

 

Based on the novel “The Devil’s Own” by Peter Curtis and adapted for the screen by Nigel Neale (The Quatermass Experiment), this is an interesting psychological horror, which shares similar themes to “The Wicker Man”, though actually pre-dates that film by several years.

 

Hammer fans will undoubtedly want to check this one out. Look out for 70s comedy actor Leonard Rossiter (Reginald Perrin, Rising Damp) in one of his few straight roles, playing the village doctor. Also look out for Rudolph Walker (Patrick from "Eastenders", or if you’re old enough to remember Bill from “Love thy Neighbour”) who has a brief role during the films intro.

 

The film is released on a BD/DVD combo pack October 21^st, in time for Halloween and contains the documentary “Hammer Glamour” as an extra. This is essentially a 40 minute feature about the women in Hammer films and contains interviews with Caroline Munro, Valerie Leon, Madeline Smith and others.

 

However, if you fancy seeing this one on the big screen, this newly restrored version of the film will also be premiering at the London film festival October 11^th.

My Amityville Horror comes to UK DVD

For most people, "The Amityville Horror" was just a movie, but for Daniel Lutz, who lived at the infamous house at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York, it was real life.

 

In 1975, when Daniel was 10, his family lived there for just 28 days before fleeing in terror, the victims of widespread supernatural happenings that pushed them to the brink of madness and had them fearing for their lives. A media circus began that never fully ended.

 

Up until their recent deaths, his parents George and Kathy Lutz, never went back on a single claim. In the 35 years since the ordeal, Daniel has never spoken on the record about his experiences. This is his story, in his words.

 

For the first time in 35 years, child eyewitness Daniel Lutz recounts his version of the infamous Amityville haunting that terrified his family in 1975.

My Amityville Horror is a gripping documentary that details the struggle behind growing up as part of a world famous haunting and shows that while Daniel's facts may be other's fiction, the psychological scars he carries are all too real.

This engaging documentary also features Daniel Lutz meeting famed demonologist & clairvoyant Lorraine Warren, who, alongside her late-husband Ed, visited the infamous Amityville house after the Lutz family fled in 1975.

Ed and Lorraine, who were most recently featured in the horror-smash hit The Conjuring, are seen throughout the documentary in rare photographs examining the house. Lorraine, now 86, also stars in the movie and is featured meeting Daniel Lutz in as they discuss the infamous house and her recollections of it.

Warren's career is indeed long and she and her husband investigated well over 4,000 cases in their time. So when Warren says that the Amityville house is the one haunted house she won't return to, it's apparent that something terrifying went down there.

The film is released to UK DVD on the 28th October from Arrow films.

FILM4 FRIGHTFEST ANNOUNCES STELLAR LINE-UP FOR HALLOWEEN ALL-NIGHTER

 

The FrightFest All-Nighter 13 returns to the Vue in London’s Leicester Square on Saturday October 26 for the third year, with six killer titles including UK premieres of THE STATION, PATRICK, NOTHING LEFT TO FEAR and SOULMATE. So climb aboard FrightFest’s Halloween Express, with guests including NEIL MARSHAL, ANNA WALTON, RENAUD GAUTHEIR and MICHAEL ARMSTRONG, for the night-ride of your lives.

Tickets for the London event go on sale Tues 1 Oct.

Horror fans around the country can also join in the fearsome fun on Saturday 2 November, when the event travels to the GFT Glasgow and the Empires in Sunderland, Newcastle and Poole. On Sat November 16 the event hits the Watershed Bristol

03:55 THE STATION  (UK Premiere)
Director Marvin Kren brings us a climate change shocker and ecological creature feature. Four technicians and scientists at an Austrian alpine research station discover a glacier of blood high in the mountains. Testing the red liquid, they discover a new alien organism with the astonishing capability of transforming the local wildlife into horrific hybrids and monster mutations.

05:45  NOTHING LEFT TO FEAR  (UK Premiere)
The first terror tale from Slasher Films (founded by Guns N’ Roses rock legend Slash) is an atmospheric frightener. James Tupper and Anne Heche are the new pastor and his wife who arrive in Stull, Kansas hoping for an idyllic family country life. But an ancient ritual is put into motion that unleashes a demonic fury and its inhabitants must quell the Beast who rises to walk the Earth at all bloody costs. Clancy Brown (Nightmare on Elm Street remake, Starship Troopers) also stars.
