THE EL-DUCE TAPES - On Blu-ray 1st Feb

In the early 90s, aspiring filmmaker (and General Hospital co-star) Ryan Sexton lugged a giant camcorder into some of the seediest clubs and the filthiest apartments in Hollywood. There he filmed hour upon hour of VHS footage of the jaw-droppingly offensive Shock Rock band The Mentors, focusing on their infamous lead singer, “El Duce.”

30 years later, the team behind The Nightmare and Room 237 and the editor of Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on The Exorcist, uncover this dusty stockpile of long forgotten – and unseen – footage. They begin to piece together a picture of the man under the black executioner’s hood and what his wilfully offensive act and controversial views might tell us about 21st century America.

An Incendiary, tragicomic documentary (midway between The Decline of Western Civilization and Crumb) which has been hailed as “Essential Viewing” by CineVue and called “Dark and Irresistible” by director John Carpenter, The El Duce Tapes will chew you up, spit you out, and leave you floored.

LIMITED EDITION CONTENTS

DEMONS 1 & 2 - On Limited Edition Blu-ray and 4K UHD 22nd Feb

In the early 1980s, Dario Argento, the famed horror maestro responsible for such classics as Suspiria and Deep Red, branched out from directing into producing, shepherding the work of his fellow filmmakers to the screen – among them Lamberto Bava (Delirium, A Blade in the Dark), son of the legendary Mario Bava. Together, they crafted two tales of terror that would become synonymous with Italian 80s horror, in which the veil between the real world and the silver screen is torn asunder.

In 1985’s Demons, a motley assortment of unwitting filmgoers accept invitations to a screening at the mysterious Metropol theatre. However, as the brutal slasher film unspools, the horror breaks free from the constraints of the screen, unleashing a swarm of slathering demons, intent on spreading their evil plague across the globe.

Then, in 1986’s Demons 2, Hell comes direct to the living room as bloodthirsty demons descend on a luxury apartment block, devouring the residents and propagating their deadly plague.

Arrow Video is proud to present brand new 4K restorations of both classic films, more vivid and terrifying than ever before, alongside a wealth of bonus features old and new, making this the ultimate experience in celluloid terror.

SHOGUN'S JOY OF TORTURE - On Blu-ray 22nd Feb

From the outrageous imagination of cult director Teruo Ishii (Orgies of Edo, Horrors of Malformed Men) comes this infamous omnibus of three shocking tales of crime and punishment based on true-life documented cases set during the reign of the Tokugawa shogunate.

The first tale sees the beautiful Mitsu (Masumi Tachibana) going to horrifying lengths to tend to her older brother Shinzō (Teruo Yoshida), a carpenter injured in a work accident, but the law catches up on them and metes out a terrifying retribution after they violate the ultimate taboo.

In the second, unfettered passions in a Buddhist nunnery are not allowed to go unpunished after abbess Reihō (Yukie Kagawa) and her attendant Rintoku (Naomi Shiraishi) encounter a virile young monk from a neighbouring temple.

In the closing segment, a sadistic torturer (Fumio Watanabe) attempts to show a tattoo artist (Asao Koike) how to depict convincing expressions of faces of pain in his work by allowing him to sketch a selection of Europeans as they are tortured for entering Japan with the aim of spreading Christianity.

Ishii’s notorious portmanteau of Edo-era excess signalled a change in direction for a director until then regarded for his crime and yakuza films, setting the ball rolling on the run of grotesque historical anthologies for which he is now best remembered. Vehemently denounced by the critics of the day, Shogun’s Joy of Torture set a new benchmark for the depiction of sex, sadism and depravity in Japanese exploitation, with Ishii staging his elaborate torture methods with an unmatched verve and inventiveness.

Short fantasy thriller GOODNIGHT, HALLOWEEN - available to view for free on YouTube

Daily death figures…people locked down, hiding, communicating via webcams…a divided nation…a right wing agenda pulling the strings of government with populist politics…welcome to alternate Detroit in 1986…welcome to the world of GOODNIGHT,  HALLOWEEN.

GOODNIGHT,  HALLOWEEN is a short fantasy thriller from award winning writer/ director Luther Bhogal-Jones – in this alternate world Halloween creatures have co-existed with mankind for all time…but now a forced government policy has removed their rights and allowed human citizens to exterminate them without consequence. The creatures have been forced into hiding and forged uneasy alliances between competing different species, all with their own agendas. A ray of hope emerges – evidence that could discredit K.R.O.N.A – the Khristian Right Of New Amerika – and having retrieved the evidence a group of creatures are scattered and forced to stay in hiding while the evidence is painstakingly uploaded to the Network…if they can stay alive long enough…which is where the film begins…

Ironically prescient for these times after being 14 years in the making (don’t ask, or refer to the accompanying 10 FAQs for more information on that) Goodnight, Halloween is a thrilling stylish throwback to the creature films of the VHS 80s era – something that could have come from studio stables of New World or Empire Pictures – while combining elements of Robocop’s mediabreak interludes and downbeat, cynical elements of John Carpenter’s work (especially with the Carpenter-esque score to the film – courtesy of Worthing composer Monzen Nakacho)

GOODNIGHT,  HALLOWEEN is available to view now at https://youtu.be/_j92cxEB39o

4k restoration of David Cronenberg's controversial CRASH on Digital and Disc

Technology and sexuality meet in a head-on collision in Crash – director David Cronenberg’s controversial adaptation of writer J.G. Ballard’s hugely transgressive 1973 novel starring James Spader and Holly Hunter.

Spader stars as James Ballard, an advertising executive whose deviant sexual desires are awakened by a near fatal automobile accident with Dr Helen Remington (Hunter). Soon the pair, alongside Ballard’s wife Catherine (Deborah Kara Unger), are drawn into an underground world of car crash fetishism presided over by renegade scientist Vaughan (Elias Koteas). Danger, sex and death become entwined as eroticism and technology join together in a disturbing, deadly union.

Awarded the Special Jury Prize at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival for originality, daring and audacity, Crash remains an incredibly subversive and confrontational piece of cinema – Cronenberg himself describes it as “a dangerous film” – now newly refurbished in a stunning 4K restoration.

Hutson’s PROGENY spawns new novel for fans

British horror legend Shaun Hutson releases a new hardback novel, PROGENY and the paperback version of his hit 2019 hardback novel, Testament. Both novels are published by Caffeine Nights Publishing and supported with eBook and audio versions.

PROGENY is the long-awaited sequel to his 1983 bestselling novel, Spawn. Caffeine Nights commissioned the original cover artist, for Spawn, Mark Taylor, to design the cover for Progeny. The artwork pays homage to Spawn while presenting a totally new book with a lovely classic horror retro feel.

Progeny works as a stand-alone novel, but for fans who have read Spawn, there is a whole back story there that adds another level to reading Progeny. I always wanted to go back and revisit some of my earlier work and see how I could develop the work over 35 years later. Spawn was always one of those stories that was left with strands that could be picked up and spun into something more horrific than the original.” Shaun said. “I also loved the irony of a book being spawned from the original that really is its progeny.”

Progeny is Shaun Hutson’s thirty ninth horror novel under his own name and is available in hardback, eBook and audiobook from all good book shops and online.

THE VIGIL - Released Digitally Nov 30

Following its successful theatrical release, audiences who missed THE VIGIL in cinemas will have the chance to be spooked by the supernatural Blumhouse horror when it’s released on digital platforms later this month in the UK and Ireland, and on DVD January 2021.

Set over the course of a long, dark night in Brooklyn’s Hassidic “Boro” Park neighbourhood, following Yakov (Dave Davis, True Detective), a former Hassid, who has lost his faith, and isn’t eager to go back to the insular religious community he only recently fled.

But when Reb Shulem (Menashe Lustig), a rabbi and confidante, approaches Yakov and offers to pay him to be the shomer (watching over the dead body of a community member) for a recently deceased Holocaust survivor, he reluctantly accepts the job. Shortly after arriving at the dilapidated house, Yakov realises that something is very, very wrong. This will not be a quiet vigil.

From Blumhouse (the producers of Halloween and Insidious), and described by Bloody Disgusting as “a fresh take on the religious/demon possession horror film”, THE VIGIL is the startling debut feature from Keith Thomas. With an unusual and evocative setting, it’s beautifully crafted, packed with fingernail-shredding scares (including a mysterious video message that’ll stand your hair on end), an ominous and eerie score, and features a standout performance from Davis as a man confronting evil. The words “You want some tea?” will never sound the same again.

THE VIGIL will be released on Digital Platforms from 30TH November and on DVD on the 4TH January 2021 in the UK and Ireland.

Featuring hi-tech effects, heavy-duty military equipment, bloody bear attacks and a suicide mission to end them all, The Blackout: Invasion Earth is a thrilling and chilling, action-packed epic that sees the fate of humanity resting in the hands of a group of heavily armoured, but massively overmatched soldiers (headed by Aleksey Cahdov, star of Nightwatch), and a lone female journalist.

This is two hours of doom and destruction, intense firefights and mind-control mayhem - and a strange, leather-clad figure called Id, who holds the key to the blackout.

THE BLACKOUT: INVASION EARTH will be released 28th DECEMBER on BD, DVD AND Digital platforms.

Campaign for VR Horror "WE ARE OMEGA" Launched.

British screenwriter A.J. Cupples and Canadian director Brendan Petersen have teamed up to work on psychological horror, WE ARE OMEGA

Synopsis
A man named JJ drops $5000 to take his old friend Molly on a VR date. Think CABIN IN THE WOODS meets an episode of BLACK MIRROR.

Unlike the VR you are used to, Omega Reality offers an experience which requires no headset.

Once they enter the virtual world, they traverse to crazy new places through portals as they encounter nightmarish creatures, a sadistic clown named Gropey, a raving masked slasher with a neon flail named Bootleg, and more!

What is virtual and what is reality starts to blur, as they start to wonder if they will ever be able to escape. . .

The Indiegogo campaign for this feature film is live, and we’re reaching for £15,000 (19.4 USD/25.8 CAD) to give JJ and Molly’s hellish story its proper justice... from visual FX of the nightmarish creatures to the high-tech portals operated by Omega.

Darkslide Pictures has experience in creating quality films and are calling all horror lovers to support and give an outlet for independent artists to make honest and profound feature films which don’t come from Hollywood’s cookie-cutter.

Our leads for the project are Beáta Imre and Honnor T. Seaton - our cast and crew are tight-knit and diverse... since the screenplays initial journey across the Atlantic, it has reached the cold climates of Thunder Bay, Ontario and found its way to the plains of the peach state, Georgia.

Every eye that falls on our campaign helps tremendously, and for that, we’re offering our backers amazing perks in return!
