"Heavy Metal" Magazine to bring "Gene Kong" to English for the first time.

Pepe Moreno’s Gene Kong will be serialized in two parts in the pages of Heavy Metal Magazine issues 278 and 279.  Issue #279 will also have a Special Limited Edition Gene Kong cover by Pepe, which will be available only on HeavyMetal.com

Set in NYC in the 1980’s, Gene Kong is the tale of Eugene Wong, a biogenetics engineer, whose secret backroom experiments have out him far ahead of his colleagues.  Sick of the crime and degenerates who have taken over New York , Gene dreams of the day he can clean up his city. Gene, being of small stature and no fighting skills, decides to take things into his own hands and begins injecting himself with the altered DNA of a gorilla.  Nothing seems to be happening until one fateful night on a subway train when Gene is accosted by a bunch of hoodlums, his anger somehow ignites his Frankenstein chemicals into action.  Let the underworld of NYC beware!

Pepe Moreno explains, “NYC was a rough town in the 80’s; crime and decay were part of the city’s “charm”, back when 42nd St. was still 42nd St. and not a street from Disneyworld, back when the later to-become-mayor- Rudolph Giuliani was NY’s us attorney and back in the time when “Bernhard Goetz”, The  infamous “subway vigilante” was loose on the streets.”

Pepe was living in the East Village in the 1980’s and would just take a subway ride and his sketchbook if he needed a character for his story.  Many of the background extras and speaking characters are based on real people from his neighbourhood.

Part 1 of Gene Kong will be in Heavy Metal #278 which ships Dec. 2015 and part 2 will be in Heavy Metal #279 which ships Feb. 2016.

Heavy Metal #279 will also have a special limited edition Gene Kong two-sided cover that will be available exclusively at heavymetal.com in Feb. 2016.

FROM DUSK TILL DAWN THE SERIES - comes to UK TV, Jan 4 on Spike.

If you’re a fan of  the original cult movie, then prepare to sink your teeth into  "From Dusk Till Dawn - The Series", premiering in the UK on Spike January 4th.

Created and executive produced by maverick filmmaker Robert Rordriguez and based on the cult classic film of the same name which he also directed, "From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series" is a supernatural crime saga with an international cast of stars: DJ Cotrona (GI Joe: Retaliation) as the suave but violent Seth Gecko, Zane Holtz (The Perks of Being a Wallflower) as his psychotic, unpredictable brother Richie Gecko, and star Eiza González playing Santánico Pandemonium. Series 1 also features household names including Don Johnson (Miami Vice), Robert Patrick (Terminator 2: Judgement Day, The X Files) and Wilmer Valderrama (Minority Report).

The original movie saw two bank robbers and their hostages sneak across the Mexican border, hole up in a bar used as a base by a gang of vampires and fight their way out. Filmed in Texas, this critically acclaimed reimagining deepens the tone of the film, adds new characters and backstories and expands the mythology behind the culebras, snake-like ancient creatures who survive by drinking human blood.  Edgy, cool and scary, it is filmed in the style of the movie, with clipped scenes and flashbacks.

Marie-Claire Dunlop, Acquisitions and Channel Manager at Spike comments: “I’m delighted to welcome this high octane drama From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series to the Spike schedule in 2016.  I couldn’t have asked for a better action packed series to launch the New Year with.”

The feature length launch episode is enough to whet any vampire fans’ appetite and sees the Gecko Brothers embark on a crime spree. Leaving a trail of blood in the wake of their latest heist, they head for the Mexican border, but are cornered by Texas Rangers Earl McGraw and Freddie Gonzalez during a pit stop at a roadside liquor store in Texas. A stand-off ensues, during which Richie has visions of demons and a mysterious woman beckoning him from beyond.

Richieʼs visions intensify as the Gecko Brothers flee the shootout at the liquor store, with Ranger Gonzalez in pursuit. Months after his wife’s death, Jacob Fuller takes his family on vacation. Concerned that he is acting strangely, his daughter Kate stays in contact with her boyfriend Kyle, who is killed by Don Carlos. Brandon Smith (Jeepers Creepers) guest-stars as Ranger Gonzalezʼs boss Captain Chance Holbrook.

"From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series" Launches 9pm, Jan 4th on Spike.

Norman Reedus stars in AIR this January

From Robert Kirkman, the creator of “The Walking Dead” comes the psychological thriller AIR, available on Digital HD and DVD this January

In the near future, breathable air is nonexistent. Virtually all of humanity has disappeared, and those chosen to reestablish society reside in a controlled state of suspended animation. Two engineers tasked with guarding the last hope for mankind struggle to preserve their own sanity and lives while administering to the vital task at hand.

Norman Reedus (“Walking Dead,” "Boondock Saints") and two-time Academy Award nominee Djimon Hounsou (Best Supporting Actor: In "America"; "Blood Diamond") star, along with Sandrine Holt ("Terminator : Genisys").

Bonus materials include two in-depth pieces that explore the development of AIR. In “An Account of Confinement,” the cast and crew illuminate the process of making this tense tale in close quarters, while delving into the artistic themes of confinement, claustrophobia and isolation. “The Custodians” is an all access character exploration, with insightful conversations with Djimon Hinsou and Norman Reedus on their approach to their characters.

AIR is available in the UK on Digital HD 11 Jan and DVD 18 Jan from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.

"He Never Died" comes to US DVD

Festival favourite "He Never Died" starring former punk rocker Henry Rollins is finally getting a DVD release, in the US at least, this February.

Rollins plays a socially awkward man, who rarely speaks and spends his time either sleeping in his flat, eating at the local diner or playing bingo with the old folk at the local church.

But when his estranged daughter gets embroiled in some dodgy dealings with some low-rent mobsters, it kick starts a chain of events that makes you question just who or what he is, as events between him and the mobsters escalate and they seem unable to take him down no matter how many times they try.

The humour is as dead-pan as it can get and Rollins is just excellent as the mysterious misfit, who seems more Terminator than Human.

I saw this one at the Mayhem Film Festival in Nottingham back in October, and proved to be one of the stand out films of the festival.

The film is currently out on VOD in the US, with the US DVD up for pre-order for release on Feb 2nd. No news yet on when this well be released in the UK.

DEATHGASM - headbanging its way to UK disc Feb!!!!!

Metal-thrashing Brodie is an outcast in a sea of jocks and cheerleaders until he meets a kindred spirit in fellow metalhead Zakk. After starting their own band, Brodie and Zakk’s resentment of the suburban wasteland leads them to a mysterious piece of sheet music said to grant Ultimate Power to whoever plays it.

But the music also summons an ancient evil entity known as Aeloth The Blind One, who threatens to tear apart existence itself. With their classmates and family possessed by demonic forces and becoming psychotic murderers, it’s up to Brodie, Zakk and their friends to stop a force of pure evil from devouring all of mankind!

A hilarious and outrageous blood soaked adventure, Deathgasm is a perfect crossover for horror film and heavy metal music fans. Featuring an amazing original soundtrack of fist-banging metal and practical effects by Main Reactor (Evil Dead remake), this brutal and bad-ass debut from Jason Lei Howden will gush bodily fluids, rain limbs and tickle your funny bone, before tearing it out and giving you a stiff beating with it!

Completed in just 20 days and with a modest budget, Deathgasm is a true labor of love and its originality and amazing sense of fun shine through. Unashamedly low-brow, this splat-stick horror comedy is consistently hilarious packed with old-school B-movie gore. Winner of the Total Film Best Gore award at this year’s Film4 FrightFest and with loads of fantastic buzz surrounding it, it is easy to see why audiences are raving about this cult classic in the making.

I saw this one at the Mayhem festival in Notts back in October, and it went down a storm.

The DVD is available to pre-order now from Amazon and all good retailers. There is a BD release, though this is exclusive to Zavvi stores only.

GREEN ROOM - In UK and Irish cinemas Friday 13 May 2016

Coming to UK and Irish cinemas this May, comes Star Trek's Patrick Stewart and Anton Yelchin like you've never seen them before.

Down-on-their-luck punk rockers The Ain’t Rights agree to a last-minute gig in a backwoods Oregon roadhouse only to find themselves caught in the crosshairs of a violent white-supremacist gang.

After finishing their set in the no-name skinhead club, the band members stumble upon a grisly murder scene and are targeted by a ruthless club owner and his henchmen, determined to eliminate all witnesses. Hopelessly outmanned and outgunned, the terrified musicians barricade themselves backstage to buy time for an escape attempt. As a heavily armed militia mounts a deadly assault, the survivors pull together in a last-ditch effort, surprising their opponents with unexpected ingenuity and courage.

Writer and director Jeremy Saulnier (BLUE RUIN) says, "GREEN ROOM was designed to deliver the most intense cinematic experience I could conjure up.  There is no better way to see it than in a crowded cinema and there is no better team than Altitude & Picturehouse to bring it to UK and Irish audiences in May. The reception to the film thus far has been beyond my wildest dreams and I’m looking forward to delivering more cinemagoers their wildest nightmares!"

Anton Yelchin (Star Trek), Patrick Stewart (TVs Star Trek : The Next Generation), Imogen Poots (28 Weeks Later), Alia Shawkat (The Final Girls), Joe Cole (TVs Peaky Blinders), Callum Turner (Victor Frankenstein) and Macon Blair (Blue Ruin) star.

Horror Channel (UK) goes ‘Xtreme’ in January

Horror Channel ushers in 2016 with the XTREME SEASON, a series of hard-hitting, controversial premieres on Saturday nights from 2nd to 30th of January. Including the UK TV premiere of THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE II (Full Sequence), as well as the Network premiere of THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE (First Sequence).

Sat 2 Jan @ 10.55pm – THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE (FIRST SEQUENCE) (2009) *Network Premiere

There isn’t anything else quite like Dutch avant-garde artist Tom Six’s totally bizarre off-the-wall oddity. Surgeon Dr. Josef Heiter has a vision for mankind’s future existence. He wants to remove the kneecaps so humans have to exist on all fours and then surgically graft them mouth-to-anus to form a centipede chain. When two stranded female Americans arrive at his luxury home-cum-hospital looking for help, his long-gestating plan swiftly moves into chilling action with a shocking force. The First Sequence in Six’s trilogy features an all-consuming performance from German star Dieter Laser as the mad doctor.

Sat 9 Jan @ 10.55pm – THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE II (FULL SEQUENCE) (2011) *UK TV Premiere

Tom Six’s controversial sequel to THE HUMAN CENTIPEDE was initially banned by the BBFC but now fans of the first film are in for a stomach churning, seat squirming treat of the most nauseous kind in this first showing on UK TV. An obese, inarticulate, retarded mama's boy (played with magnificent evil relish by Laurence R. Harvey) is determined to recreate the experiment portrayed in The Human Centipede (First Sequence). He does this by abducting motorists from a multi-storey car park and taking them to a disused warehouse, where he attempts to join twelve of them together as a human centipede with one digestive system. Definitely not for the faint-hearted.

Sat 16 Jan @ 22.55pm – HOSTEL PART II (2007) *Network Premiere

The Xtreme season continues with Eli Roth’s sequel to his notoriously successful Hostel, this time with Quentin Tarantino exec-producing. Again the action takes place in Slovakia and centres on the shadowy ‘Elite Hunting Club’. Beth (Lauren German), Lorna (Heather Matarazzo) and Whitney (Bijou Phillips), three young American women traveling abroad, decide to take a weekend excursion. Lured from their intended destination by a beautiful acquaintance (Vera Jordanova), the women anticipate a stay at a luxurious spa. Instead, they become pawns in a grisly game designed to entertain wealthy deviants from around the world.

Sat 23 Jan @ 10.55pm – HOSTEL PART III (2011) *UK TV Premiere

Eli Roth steps back into a producer role for the third instalment of the Hostel franchise, receiving its UK TV premiere on Horror Channel. This time we’re in Vegas rather than Slovakia and it’s the turn of a group of men, in town to attend a bachelor party, to feel the brutal force of the Elite Hunting Club. Enticed by two prostitutes to join them at a private party way off the Strip, the men are horrified to find themselves the subjects of a perverse game of torture, the most sadistic show in town.

Plus…Sat 30 Jan @ 10.55pm – I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE (2010)

NINA FOREVER - on UK disc and Digital February

We all know that two’s company, three’s a... bloody mess! No more so than in Nina Forever, the strikingly original award- winning British debut that delivers an extraordinary take on a love triangle.

Rob (Cian Barry) is a supermarket shelf-filler who tried to kill himself after depression brought on by the sudden tragic death of his girlfriend Nina (Fiona O’Shaughnessy). Checkout girl Holly (Abigail Hardingham) has a morbid fascination with pain and death and puts Rob on her want list. Sexual sparks fly when they do finally get together. There’s just one problem. Even though she’s dead, sarcastic Nina has no intention of letting go of her ex. But can Rob and Holly really cope with a forever revenant threesome? A tender but bloody story about breaking up and moving on.

As with any relationship, be prepared to encounter all the butterflies, all the sex, all the heartbreak, all the turmoil... and all the blood! Nina Forever is unlike any romance we’ve cried to, unlike any horror we’ve grossed ourselves out with and unlike any British debut we’ve discovered in years. A truly groundbreaking black comedy from the Blaine brothers which isn’t afraid to break the rules (and a few bones along the way). This is a harrowing take on the complexities of human sexuality and the emotional chaos that comes with it. A tender, charming, quirky yet emotionally poignant tale of modern love through a horror lens

Nina Forever is the talk of the international film festival circuit receiving both critical and audience praise at SXSW Film Festival 2015, Film4 Frightfest 2015, and Toronto After Dark Film Festival 2015 to name a few. It’s a modern cult classic in the making and firmly places directors Ben and Chris Blaine alongside pioneering British filmmakers Ben Wheatley and Peter Strickland.

Nina Forever is a fairy tale unlike no other, with a very real emotional core, incredibly engrossing performances and an endless supply of bed sheets.

Special Features:
A Look Behind Nina Forever
Things That Are Not There
Things That Were Not There

I happened to see this at the Mayhem Horror Festival in Nottingham and believe me, it certainly lives up to it's tag line "A Fucked up Fairy Tale".

Paul Hyett begins shooting HERETIKS

PAUL HYETT (Director of HOWL and THE SEASONING HOUSE) has begun principal photography on the chilling supernatural horror film HERETIKS

Set during the 17th Century, a young woman is saved from execution and led to a priory to repent her sins but discovers a greater evil lies within.

Michael Ironside (Total Recall, Starship Troopers, Scanners, etc), three-time Olivier winner Clare Higgins (Hellraiser, Hellbound, The Golden Compass) and Hannah Arterton (Walking On Sunshine) star in this atmospheric horror/chiller currently shooting in Wales.

Director and co-writer Paul Hyett: “Being a lover of classic British horror for years I’ve been wanting to give a classic period tale a modern, harder, stylish edge. Heretiks is the perfect vehicle to do this. It’s both a richly-layered medieval character piece and a wonderful chance to showcase the latest in visual effects and contemporary cinematography while being blessed with some of my favourite actors”.

Producer Michael Riley: “Paul and I have known each other for years and having recently collaborated successfully on The Seasoning House (and still actually speaking to each other) I wouldn’t want to miss helping to bring his extraordinary vision to life”.

Producer Marcia Do Vales: “I have no doubt that Heretiks will be one of the most thrillingly entertaining and downright creepy movies of 2016. The script has twists and turns that will keep the audience on the edge of their seats all the way to the closing credits. It's been a real privilege to work with Paul Hyett, Michael Riley and Templeheart Films on a production that promises to set a new benchmark for the genre.”

The movie will be executive produced by Lyndon Baldock (Templeheart Films) and Gary Collins (Red Rock Entertainment) and produced by Marcia Do Vales (EnMar Productions) & Michael Riley (Sterling Pictures) for delivery in 2016.

"Nightmares in a Damaged Brain" UK BD review

Infamous former video nasty “Nightmares in a Damaged Brain” (AKA Nightmare), makes its UK Blu-Ray debut courtesy of 88 Films this month, who have also released it to DVD. Having received my copy from Amazon, thought a review might be in order.

Psychiatric patient George Tatum (Baird Stafford) is released from a mental health facility in New York, after the doctors think they’ve cured him. However, once out he immediately relapses. Plagued with nightmares and hallucinations about a traumatic childhood incident, he embarks on a murderous rampage as he decides to up sticks and head over to Florida, bumping off random women with numerous sharp instruments along the way.

Once there, he proceeds to target a single parent family. Plaguing them with bizarre phone calls and lurking round the yard at night. But as her son is a practical joker, she thinks its him just messing around. Something that they may not live to regret later...

This exceptionally low budget slasher film gained notoriety in the UK when it was listed as a video nasty in the early 80s and the distributor actually jailed because the video he released was 60s longer than the BBFC approved cut cinema version, even though this version was still fairly heavily cut.

The film also infamously got sued by noted special effects expert Tom Savini, after they falsely credited him for doing the effects. When in fact he had only acted as a consultant to the real special effects man Ed French (who himself would go on to work on Starship Troopers).

The film was released onto UK DVD in a more complete form back in 2005, which although passed uncut by the BBFC, was still missing a sizable chunk of footage as it was taken from the edited US R-rated version, as they couldn’t find a copy of the uncut version. The uncut version had previously only been available in the US on a limited edition DVD and VERY limited BD. But the good news though is that this uncut version is now available in the UK from 88 Films, on both BD and DVD.

Now, if you have seen the old US DVD, which came with 3 different transfers of the film, you’ll remember those prints were exceptionally scratched and extremely worn. This version has been painstakingly digitally restored, which  has cleaned up and removed the vast majority of dirt and scratches from the print. The disc has been authored from a brand new HD scan, however this appears to have been taken from a 35mm cinema print (the original negatives having long since vanished), which obviously has its limitations in terms of picture quality. So whilst the picture is noticeably cleaner than the previous releases, the Blu-Ray quality is little better than DVD.

Extras included on the disc include

Running audio commentary with Producer Bill Paul, which is actually more of a series of bizarre stories of the goings on behind the camera, than whats going on on screen.
Interview with Tom Ward, CEO of 21st Century Films. - A 2 minute interview with the former distributor of "Nightmare", who talks about the films release.
Terror in Times Square Documentary  – Which is essentially just 16mins of Michael Gingold and Tony Timpone from Fangoria Magazine talking about New York's long lost Grindhouse cinema district on 42nd street, which features in the film.
Lastly there’s the US theatrical trailer and a selection of trailers for other titles in the 88 Films catalogue.

Now, the US disc contained a commentary track with lead actor Baird Stafford and Effects artist Cleve Hall, however this disc opts for a new track with Producer Bill Paul. Would have been nice if they’d also licensed the other track for inclusion. The US disc also contained several interviews with the cast and crew, but here all we get is a brief interview with the distributor and a documentary about New York’s long lost 42nd Street Street grindhouse district, which is interesting, but only tenuously connected to the film.

Also, it would have been nice if they’d included the old UK trailer, which is available as its on the old Video Nasties documentary set that Nucleus films put out the other year. Instead, we get the standard US trailer.

To summarise, “Nightmares in a Damaged Brain” is an essential purchase for anyone wishing to complete their video nasty collection and this Blu-Ray (and indeed the DVD) is certainly a very nice addition to the 88 Films catalogue, containing some nice extras and the cleaned up picture is certainly a massive improvement over the old US DVD.

However, it would have been nicer had they included some of the extras from the US release. As it is, its appeal lies mainly in the fact the US BD and DVD are both long out of print. However, owing to the condition of the original source material means I doubt there’s much to choose quality wise between the BD and DVD versions.

*EDIT - Although this version was taken from an "uncut" print of the film, there is still one scene missing, which so far has only been seen on the old Dutch VHS release of the film. In which a young lad is grabbed from behind by the killer in the abandoned house. Instead the scene cuts and you hear him scream off camera. This scene has not been included in any known disc release of the film to date.
