Leprechaun films to be remade????

Some timely news for St Patrick's Day, the Filmofillia website are reporting that Lionsgate films are looking at rebooting the "Leprechaun" franchise ("What the bloody hell for"? I hear you cry).

The original film came out in 1993, starring diminutive actor Warwick Davis (Wicket the Ewok from Star Wars) in the title role, which also marked Jennifer Aniston's screen debut. With a budget of just $900,000, it went on to gross almost $9million, and was extremely popular on VHS, selling over 10,000 units in the US alone.

Five sequels followed, in which Davis also starred, some of which also featuring various well known B-movie and TV actors, including "Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2's" Caroline Williams, "Blade - The Series" Kirk 'Sticky Fingaz' Jones and even rapper Ice-T and saw the Leprechaun terrorising various locations, including Las Vegas, a black neighbourhood and even outer space.

The last film, "Back to Tha Hood" came out in 2003, but now it seems that the current rights holders, Lions Gate Films, are looking at rebooting the Franchise and are going to be making 2 films back to back, though there's no script as of yet, nor has it been announced as to who will play the Leprechaun this time.

Lionsgate are hoping to have the first of the 2 films out by 2013, so stay tuned.
