Violent revenge thriller HUNT CLUB - On Digital, August.

Award-winning British filmmaker Elizabeth Blake-Thomas helms the wildly violent and unrelenting revenge thriller HUNT CLUB, which takes a stark gaze at the sinister depths of toxic masculinity and sees Oscar-winning actor Mena Suvari (American Beauty) deliver an unmissable turn as the kick-ass lead.

This all-star blood-thirsty action thriller gets its UK premiere this summer from Plaion Pictures and also stars screen legend Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler), Casper Van Dien (Starship Troopers), Will Peltz (Unfriended) and Maya Stojan (Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D).

Cassandra (Suvari) is a strong mother who’s going through a tough time... Her daughter is missing and she doesn’t know where to turn, so when the tough-talking Tessa (Stojan) enters her life, things start to look up… But a ‘chance’ encounter with two men – Carter (Van Dien) and his son Jackson (Peltz)  – is about to change everything...

Invited to join the hunt, Cassandra jumps at the chance to win the prize money, but when she gets to the island, she soon discovers this is no ordinary hunt, there’s more to it than meets the eye… the prize is way more sinister. The island is full of scared young women who have been lured there to be the ultimate win – they’re about to be hunted and killed by the vile sadistic hunters.

But it’s not long before the men discover that they’ve messed with the wrong women. As the situation takes an unexpected turn, the hunters become the hunted.

THE GATES (2023) - A Review

Shocker meets Jack the Ripper in Victorian London in the supernatural chiller THE GATES, which is available now from UK Digital outlets.

Set in the early 1890s and serial killer William Colcott (Richard Brake - Barbarian, 3 From Hell) becomes the first, and only, British prisoner to be executed by the new experimental method of electrocution.

But when fellow prisoners at the jail, as well as some of the guards, start dieing under very mystrerious circumstances. They begin to suspect that Colcott's dabblings in the occult may have something to do with it and he may not be quite as dead as they first suspected.

Post mortem photographer Frederick Ladbroke (John Rhys-Davies - Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, Lord of the Rings trilogy) and his assistant Emma Wickes (Elena Delia - House of Shadows) think they may have captured something in one of their photos of the deceased and end up assisting a bizarre psychic medium (Michael Yare - TV's Line of Duty) and the prison chaplain in trying to exorcise Colcott's spirit from the prison, before the evil can spread beyond it's walls.

As mentioned earlier, the film was very reminiscent of Wes Craven's 1989 film Shocker, albeit set in Victorian London. Though competantly filmed and well acted, which defintely benefits from the inclusion of John Rhys-Davies and Richard Brake, the film isn't really all that scary and, aside from a small number of gory scenes, felt more like a period drama one could typically see on the TV on a Sunday afternoon.

If you enjoyed the likes of The Woman in Black, you should probably enjoy this. But most mainstream horror fans may find it a bit slow (nit pickers will also note that the electric chair was never used in the UK).

THE GATES is available now from all good Digital outlets, courtesy of 101 films.
