"And Then There Were None" - UK DVD review

If you enjoyed the BBC Mini-Series “And Then There Were None”, based on the popular Agatha Christie novel (AKA Ten Little Indians), which aired over the Xmas period, you’ll be pleased to know that its being released to UK DVD Jan 11th, and I was fortunate enough to get a screener copy to look at.

Set in the late 1930s, a group of total strangers are invited to spend the weekend at a remote house, located on an island off the Devon coast. But it seems they have been lured there under false pretences, and whoever their mysterious host is, he is aware that each one is harbouring a dark secret, for which they must pay.

As the bodies start to pile up, and with no sign of their host, paranoia sets in and the group quickly starts turning on each other, as they attempt to discover which one of them might be the killer.

A very dark and twisted tale, which plays almost like a period slasher movie (well, sort of), the story has been adapted for the cinema many, many times over the years, but this is the first time the original story has been faithfully adapted for television, its release coinciding nicely with the 150th anniversary of the novel.

It also features an excellent cast, including Charles Dance (Game of Thrones, Underworld Awakening), Sam Neill (Jurassic Park, Omen 3 : The Final Conflict), Toby Stevens (Die Another Day, The Machine) and Miranda Richardson (TVs Blackadder).

The disc comes with a making-of feature (60mins) containing interviews with the cast and crew and tons of behind the scenes footage. And there are 2 photo galleries, containing on-set and behind the scenes stills.

Perhaps not the sort of story that would appeal to mainstream horror fans, but if you like period dramas and tales of murder most horrible, you’ll love it.
