THE EYES BELOW - FrightFest Review [sort of]

THE EYES BELOW was one of several films that premiered at this year's FrightFest in London, which I was fortunate enough to view an online screener copy of, being unable to attend in person myself this year.

The plot for this revolves around an investigative journalist, who's working remotely at his cabin in the French countryside on a major story about some high profile corruption case.

But it seems his hard work may be having an adverse affect, as he finds himself suffering from sleep paralysis and nightmare-ish visions about a dark demon, that comes to terrorise him in his sleep at night.

But on this particular occasion, it seems his nightmares may be all too real as even after he appears to wake up, he finds himself still unable to move and is subsequently dragged down into a bizarre surreal nightmare world under his covers, from which he seems unable to escape.

A very bizarre, dark and surreal horror tale, which uses atmosphere and fear of the unknown to slowly ramp up the tension and you're never really sure whether the events are all a dream, or if there's some real world explanation as to what appears to be happening? But you'll just have to watch it for yourself to find that one out.

Directed by French Filmaker Alexis Bruchon, who also wrote, filmed and produced this. The film is fairly unique in that it only features 2 actors. The Journalist, played by Vinicius Coelho and the Demon, played by Pauline Morel. Also, there is virtually no spoken dialogue, instead relying heavily on visual cues to explain what's happening.

The film is a bit of a “slow burner”, so may not be to everyone's taste, but it will certainly make you want to check under your bed before going to sleep at night.  It's also worth noting that the Director's previous film “The Woman with Leopard Shoes” also premiered at the 2021 FrightFest in Glasgow, and was similarly well received, so if this film appeals, you might also want to check that one out.

Checkout the trailer below, be sure to keep an eye out for when this is released...
