THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE - FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY 31ST MARCH

THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE will be showing in over 60 cinemas across the UK, and will also feature a 15 minute Q+A with the director André Øvredal

Having terrifying audiences at The BFI London Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, Fantastic Fest and Sitges Film Festival, André Øvredal ‘s THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE will receive a one-night-only special presentation in cinemas across the UK on 31st March 2017.

Experienced coroner Tommy Tilden and his grown-up son Austin run a family-owned morgue and crematorium in Virginia. When the local Sheriff brings in an emergency case – an unknown female corpse nicknamed ‘Jane Doe’, found in the basement of a home where a multiple homicide took place – it seems like just another open-and-shut case. But as the autopsy proceeds, these seasoned professionals are left reeling as each layer of their inspection brings frightening new revelations.

Perfectly preserved on the outside, Jane Doe’s insides have been scarred, charred and dismembered – seemingly the victim of a horrific yet mysterious ritualistic torture. As Tommy and Austin begin to piece together these gruesome discoveries, an unnatural and terrifying force takes hold of the crematorium. While a violent storm rages above ground, it seems the real horrors lie on the inside…

THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE is directed by André Øvredal (Trollhunter, Mortal) with the original screenplay written by Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg.

The cast is led by Brian Cox (Manhunter, Braveheart, RED, The Escapist, Churchill) as seasoned coroner Tommy Tilden, Emile Hirsch (Killer Joe, Speedracer, Into The Wild, Lone Survivor) as Tommy’s grown up son Austin, Ophelia Lovibond (Guardians of the Galaxy, Nowhere Boy, Man Up) as Austin’s girlfriend, Michael McElhatton (Game of Thrones, The Hallow) as Sherriff Burke and Olwen Kelly as Jane Doe.

Bird With The Crystal Plumage - New 4K restoration - 19th June from Arrow.

Dario Argento’s superb directorial debut, The Bird With the Crystal Plumage, is released here in a gorgeous, brand new 4K restoration from the camera negative in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio, produced by Arrow Video exclusively for this release. Fans of Argento and Italian cinema can now see the film that reshaped the screen incarnation of the giallo in all its terrible beauty, as it was originally intended

In 1970, young first-time director Dario Argento (Deep Red, Suspiria) made his indelible mark on Italian cinema with The Bird with the Crystal Plumage – a film which redefined the ‘giallo’ genre of murder-mystery thrillers and catapulted him to international stardom.

Sam Dalmas (Tony Musante, We Own the Night), an American writer living in Rome, inadvertently witnesses a brutal attack on a woman (Eva Renzi, Funeral in Berlin) in a modern art gallery. Powerless to help, he grows increasingly obsessed with the incident. Convinced that something he saw that night holds the key to identifying the maniac terrorising Rome, he launches his own investigation parallel to that of the police, heedless of the danger to both himself and his girlfriend Giulia (Suzy Kendall, Spasmo)…

A staggeringly assured debut, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage establishes the key traits that would define Argento’s filmography, including lavish visuals and a flare for wildly inventive, brutal scenes of violence. With sumptuous cinematography by Vittorio Storaro (Apocalypse Now) and a seductive score by legendary composer Ennio Morricone (Once Upon a Time in the West), this landmark film has never looked or sounded better in this new, 4K-restored limited edition from Arrow Video!

Eyes of My Mother - Movie review - in selected UK cinemas NOW

Out now at selected UK cinemas, Nicholas Pesce’s dark and disturbing chiller "Eyes of my Mother".

As a young girl, Francisca (Kika Magalhaes) witnessed her mother being murdered in their remote farmhouse by a passing psychopath. However, he picked on the wrong home, as he is subsequently dealt a suitably gory revenge by the father upon his return.

Chained up in the barn, tortured and kept as a pet for Francisca, who likes experimenting on him using the surgery techniques she learned from her mother, to say this had a traumatic effect on her upbringing is something of an understatement.

Now an adult, following the death of her father and her “pet” Charlie, she seeks a replacement, though this isn’t easy and several dead bodies are left in her wake. But if you thought the film was disturbing enough up to this point, wait till you see what happens when she finally does manage to lure someone back to her home with the intention of taking Charlie’s place…

Filmed in black and white and in Portuguese language, with English subs. This was like watching a European art-house version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, being a VERY disturbing tale about Isolation, loneliness and obsession without compassion and is certainly one of the most disturbing films you are likely to see this year.

"The Eyes of My Mother" is out at selected UK cinemas today.

Don't Knock Twice (in UK cinemas Mar 31) - Movie Review

Out at UK cinemas this month. Katie Sackoff (Oculus, TVs Battlestar Gallactica) plays an American sculptor, Jess, a woman with a very troubled past.

Having managed to straighten her life out and build a successful career for herself, she is trying to reconcile with her estranged daughter Chloe (Lucy Boynton – TV’s Sense and Sensibility), who’s living at a halfway house for troubled teens.

Initially, she is uninterested in getting to know her mother again, having been abandoned at a very young age by her. But when she and her boyfriend decide to test out whether the local ghostly legends at a supposedly haunted house are true, by knocking on the door, she finds their lives being thrust together.

It seems the old lady who once lived at the abandoned property was believed to be a witch, or something, by the locals and was subsequently hounded to death by the local kids. Local superstition says if you knock on her door twice, she will come for you. So when her boyfriend mysteriously disappears whilst chatting on the webcam, she finds her mother is the only person who she can turn to for help.

Of course, Jess doesn’t believe in any of this superstitious nonsense. But following several unexplained events around the home, she is forced to concede that something is very wrong indeed and supernatural elements may well be at work…

I was a huge fan of Director Caradog James previous film, “The Machine” and so was really looking forward to checking this out. However, I was left feeling slightly underwhelmed as what we have here is essentially a cross between Drag me to Hell and Candyman (or Bloody Mary from Paranormal Activity if you will).

Katie Sackoff is arguably the best thing about it, who as always puts in an excellent performance and there are a few unexpected twists, which even caught me by surprise. But being a militant atheist, struggle to take films about the paranormal seriously and found the plot to be somewhat derivative of other movies of this ilk.

Don’t Knock Twice is released to UK cinemas March 31.

The Hunt Is On for Fright-Rags' PREDATOR Collection

In 1987, John McTiernan's Predator was released, and Arnold Schwarzenegger taught us that "If it bleeds, we can kill it!" Although there have been numerous sequels, comics, novels, games, and a reboot movie on the way, nothing compares to the original. Fright-Rags has released the Predator Collection in honor of its 30th anniversary.

The Predator Collection marks the return of Fright-Rags' popular mask and shirt box sets. There are two versions available, each of which features an exclusive tee designed by Justin Osbourn and a retro-style ventilated mask packaged in a collectible window box. The standard version, limited to 650, is based on the Predator's appearance in the movie. The Ugly Motherf***er variant, limited to 300, is inspired by 1980s horror trading cards.

While Osbourn's shirts are exclusive to the box sets, the artwork can be purchased separately on zip-up hoodies, and the Ugly Motherf***er design is available on baseball tees. The Predator Collection also includes four shirts from artists Jason Edmiston, Paul Shipper, Chris Lovell, and Coki Greenway, plus two different styles of custom-knit socks.

The hunt is on now at Fright-Rags.com. The Predator Collection shirts are in stock, while socks will ship in approximately 10 days and mask box sets are due out in mid-June. Quantities are limited.

In addition to The Thing collection available earlier this month and the Predator collection on sale now, Fright-Rags has Chucky and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre apparel dropping next week.

IBIZA UNDEAD - UK DVD review

A weekend of general debauchery goes horribly wrong for a group of lads holidaying in Ibiza when the island is over run with flesh eating zombies in director Andy Edwards IBIZA UNDEAD, which is out now on UK DVD.

Set against the backdrop of a virus outbreak, which causes those infected to turn into zombies, a group of lads decide to go for a holiday in Ibiza, which is one of the few places the zombie virus hasn’t affected (yet).

However, it seems that one enterprising night club owner (played by Peep Show’s Matt King) has found a way to circumvent quarantine control and is pulling in the punters to with his zombie pole dancers and zombie dismemberment live shows.

But thanks to the drunken antics of one of the group, the zombies get loose and proceed to start eating the customers. To make matters worse, many of the unwanted undead the club owner has dumped off his yacht happen to make it to shore and start rampaging across the island.

The lads subsequently find themselves barricaded in their holiday home facing a Night of the Living Dead style siege, unless they can find a way to make it off the island alive.

Extras on the disc consist of

Ibiza Undead Uncovered (10:20) – Behind the scenes feature, including interviews with the cast and crew.

FrightFest 2016 Premiere (3:30) – A couple of TV Interviews with Director Andy Edwards and actress Marcio De Valles, who plays Maria, filmed at it’s FrightFest 2016 screening.

House Party of the Dead 6 (18:00) – One of Director Andy Edwards previous short films about a group of youths trapped inside their house during a zombie apocalypse.

Filled with crass humour and buckets of blood, with a title like “Ibiza Undead” you pretty much know what you’re going to get and the film certainly delivers. If you’re into “The Inbetweeners” or if you like horror comedies like “Shaun of the Dead” you’ll love it.

IBIZA UNDEAD is out now on UK DVD from Soda Pictures.

"Death Race : 2050" - UK DVD review

“Death Race 2050”, Roger Corman’s campy follow up to his campy original “Death Race 2000”, hits UK disc this month from Universal pictures, who were kind enough to send me a DVD to take a look at.

Set in the year 2050 (obviously) in what is now called the United Corporations of America, where overpopulation and unemployment have sky-rocketed. Fans are gathering for the annual Death Race, a coast to coast race where drivers in specially modified cars get extra points for running down pedestrians.

The reigning champion Frankenstein (played by The Hobbit’s Manu Bennet) is looking at holding onto his crown, and as the race gets underway a trail of carnage and destruction quickly ensues as the various racers compete for poll position, taking out as many bystanders as they can.

Some of the more interesting scenes include Frankenstein driving his car through a day centre full of disabled kids, one of the Black racers, Minerva (Folake Olowofoyeku - TVs Westworld, Female Fight Club), encountering racist rednecks in the deep south and a group of resistance fighters, lead by Yancy Butler (Kick Ass, Lake Placid 3,4 & 5) trying to take out Frankenstein, in an outrageous end battle scene with armoured cars.

Directed by G.J. Echternkamp (Hard Candy) and co-starring Malcolm McDowell as the President, or Chairman as the position is now called. “Death Race 2050” most definitely has its tongue firmly in its cheek. Ignoring the 2008 remake and its sequels, instead billing itself as a follow up to the original 1975 film, and as such, proves to be part sequel, part remake and part homage. Complete with retro-1970s vision of what the future should look like.

Indeed it was kind of like watching a live action version of The Wacky Races, but with a lot of deliberately campy acting, dark humour and political satire thrown in (and some deliberately dodgy CGI to boot).

The disc comes with the following special features…

Making of Death Race 2050 (9:50) – a look at the making of the film, featuring interviews with G.J. Echternkamp, Roger Corman, Manu Bennet Malcolm MacDowell and other cast and crew members.

The Look of 2050 (6:15) – More behind the scenes footage and interviews with the cast and crew, showing where they filmed it in South America and how they designed the costumes.

Cars Cars Cars (4:20) – The director and cast discuss the look of the cars and how the built them.

Cast Car Tours (8:15) – A close up of each individuals racing car used in the film.

Deleted Scenes (5:26) – a selection of short deleted scenes removed for time or pacing reasons, with unfinished effects.

A nice selection of extras, though it would have been nicer if they’d included the films theatrical trailers, which are sadly absent. The disc I was sent to review was the DVD, however the BD contains the same features on.

If you enjoyed the original, you will undoubtedly want to check this out. Just view it for what it is, a campy, fun popcorn film and you’ll get on fine with it.

ZOMBIE LAKE - UK DVD review.

Nazi Zombies return from their watery grave and go on the rampage in a remote village in rural France in Jean Rollin’s “Zombie Lake”, which is out now on UK DVD from Black House Entertainment this month.

There are some zombie films that are just s-o-o-o-o-o hilariously bad they have to be seen to be believed, and Zombie Lake is one such example. Many years ago, during WW2 a group of German soldiers, retreating from the advancing Allies, were ambushed by French resistance fighters and their bodies dumped into the lake.

Now, they have returned, covered in green face-paint, and set about attacking anyone who ventures near their final resting place. It starts with a young girl doing a bit of nude sunbathing by the lakeside, followed by bus load of volleyball players who decide to go skinny dipping in the lake, before going on to prey on any local villagers who venture too near to the water.

Why it’s taken the undead soldiers until the early 1980s to seek revenge on the townsfolk is never explained, not that it’s really important as the film is so hilariously bad, you’ll best a gut laughing whilst watching it.

Zombie make-up that basically consists of green paint, which doesn't even cover the whole of the actors faces and keeps washing off in the lake. Underwater shots filmed in a swimming pool, not to mention the plot inconsistencies bigger than the aforementioned lake itself and a hilarious scene where the villagers organise themselves into a vigilante mob to take on the zombies, which all goes disastrously wrong.

Extras on the disc consist of a selection of alternate takes, in which the female victims get to keep their clothes on. The original theatrical trailer and trailers for the films “Crimson” and “Oasis of the Zombies”.

I compared this to the old US DVD from Image Entertainment and can honestly say that the Black House transfer is certainly a lot brighter and clearer than the one on the Image disc. You also have the option of watching the film in either English or French, though the default track is the French one for some rather annoying reason, meaning you have to select English from the set up menu prior to viewing if you wish to watch this in English.

Zombie Lake is by no means the best of the small cycle of Nazi Zombie films that came out in the late-70s/early 80s (indeed its one of the worst), but that doesn’t mean it isn’t wildly enjoyable, albeit for all the wrong reasons. So if trashy Eurohorrors are your thing, grab the popcorn and a six-pack and have a blast. And if you like this, you’ll be pleased to know that Black House Entertainment are releasing the similarly themed “Oasis of the Zombies” shortly too.

Arrow films release the MADHOUSE this June...

Coming this June on dual format BD and DVD from Arrow films.... MANY PEOPLE VISIT … NO ONE EVER LEAVES.

Helmed by legendary producer/director Ovidio Assonitis, the man behind such cult favourites as "The Visitor" and "Piranha II: Flying Killers",
MADHOUSE is a crimson-soaked tale of sibling rivalry taken to a terrifying and bloody extreme.

Julia has spent her entire adult life trying to forget the torment she suffered at the hands of her twisted twin Mary… but Mary hasn’t forgotten. Escaping hospital, where she’s recently been admitted with a horrific, disfiguring illness, Julia’s sadistic sister vows to exact a particularly cruel revenge on her sibling this year – promising a birthday surprise that she’ll never forget.

An Italian production shot entirely in Savannah, Georgia, Madhouse (aka And When She Was Bad and There Was a Little Girl) fuses slasher elements with the over-the-top excess of ‘80s Italian terror – resulting in a cinematic bloodbath so gut-wrenching that the British authorities saw fit to outlaw it as a “video nasty”.
