Horror Channel (UK) bares its teeth this July

There is real bite to July’s line-up on THE Horror Channel, as killer sharks, a rampaging tiger, a family of cannibals, a vengeful Chupacabra and a wolf in serial killer clothing herald in a premiere-packed month on the UK’s only channel dedicated to the dark side.

There are four UK TV premieres: Jim Mickle’s brilliant re-imagining of Jorge Michel Grau’s Mexican art-house cannibal fantasy WE ARE WHAT WE ARE, Greg McLean’s  WOLF CREEK 2, which sees the return of Australia’s most famed pig-shooting psycho, Carlos Brooks’ wonderful ‘Tiger in a House’ nerve-jangler BURNING BRIGHT and Alastair Orr’s Panamanian creature thriller PREY. Plus, there is the network premiere of THE REEF, the scariest shark chiller since Jaws.

As well as the four UK TV Premieres, Horror Channel is bringing you ‘Tropical Terror’ season this July. Take a slay-cation you’ll never forget with our collection of sun-drenched shockers featuring David Twohy’s adventure thriller A PERFECT GETAWAY and James Cullen Bressack’s Thai-holiday-turned-nightmare horror PERNICIOUS

Horror’s season of Tropical Terror is every Friday at 10:50pm from Friday 8th July.

Full details of premieres in transmission order:

Sat 2 July @ 9.00pm – BURNING BRIGHT (2010) * UK TV Premiere

Johnny Gavenau’s latest get-quick-rich scheme is to turn his Florida ranch into a Safari Park. As the main attraction he buys a dangerous Bengal tiger from an unscrupulous circus trader. But the ravenous beast gets loose, its only refuge the ranch house interior where stepdaughter Kelly and her autistic little brother Tom reside... Nature runs amok but human nature proves to be the real villain in director Carlos Brooks’ taut twist on the home invasion chiller. Look out for a guest appearance from Meatloaf.

Fri 8 July @ 10.50pm – THE REEF (2010) *Network Premiere

For four old friends it seemed like a dream come true – a week cruising the world’s most beautiful coral reef on their own yacht. But when the vessel capsizes, leaving them stranded on the over-turned hull, that dream turns into a nightmare. They take to the open water – only to learn, too late, that they are being stalked by a deadly great white shark. Director Andrew Traucki’s true-life shocker puts ordinary people in an all-too believable extreme situation, where small actions become epic tragedies.

Sat 9 July @ 10.50pm – WE ARE WHAT WE ARE (2013) *UK TV Premiere

Following the unexpected death of their mother, teenage daughters Iris and Rose Parker are ordered by their father to carry on a macabre ancestral ritual at all costs. But when a torrential storm hits their upstate New York region, the town’s river overflows and the local authorities start uncovering long-buried clues that lead them to the Parker family’s cannibalistic secret. Stunning performances from the cast add enormous weight to Jim Mickle’s superb film craft and subtle horror nuance. Stars Bill Sage, Ambyr Childers, Julia Garner, Michael Parks and Kelly McGillis.

Fri 15 July @ 10.50pm – PREY (2014) *UK TV Premiere

Originally released as Indigenous, Alastair Orr’s  exotic horror fantasy centres on five friends who meet in Panama for a vacation. While partying, they hear a native story about a beautiful waterfall deep in the jungle. Ignoring the many warnings, they set off to find the waterfall. When they reach it, the group discovers that the stories about the mythical, blood-sucking Chupabra are not only true, but that it has now developed a taste for humans.

Sat 16 July @ 10.50pm – WOLF CREEK 2 (2013) *UK TV Premiere

The gravel-voiced, sneering maniac Mick Taylor is back with a few more days to kill! Bolder. Gorier, and placed on a far bigger canvas than the original Ozploitation classic, star John Jarratt and director Greg McLean return with an even more twisted shocker. WOLF CREEK 2 maintains the original’s savagery and nerve-jangling tension, while dazzling further with a spectacular and surprising use of Down Under landscapes and creatures. Two arrogant cops, two unwitting German backpackers and a Good Samaritan British tourist become the prey for the crazed pig-shooting psycho as the outback is drenched in rivers of blood.

REVEALED: Graham Humphrey's stunning artwork for Horror Channel FrightFest 2016

Horror Channel FrightFest is delighted to present Graham Humphrey’s stunning artwork for this year’s annual Bank Holiday event, the UK’s largest celebration of genre cinema, taking place at the Vue Shepherd’s Bush, London. Between Thurs Aug 25 & Mon Aug 29.

The relocation to Shepherd’s Bush was the inspiration behind the concept.

As Graham explains: "This year’s relocation suggested the idea of a floating cinema that can move through the city. Going west, I took it all the way to Louisiana, as portrayed in the film ‘Southern Comfort’. reimagining London as a swampland.

I took my cues from a variety of sources; the ‘feu follet’ (will-o’-the-wisp) are mentioned in George Washington Cable’s short story ‘Jean-ah Poquelin’, the paddle steamer was inspired by the work of Mark Twain and the skulls from the script of Orson Welles’ unmade ‘Heart Of Darkness’. There’s also a nod to Hertzog’s ‘Fitzcarraldo’. The witch house I added for extra Scooby-Doo points!"

Graham’s large-format, hard-cover, book ‘Drawing Blood’ is currently available to buy from

The full festival line-up of films will be announced on Fri 1 July and all ticketing information can be found at http://www.frightfest.co.uk/tickets.html

Aliens 30th Anniversary Collection on sale now at Fright-Rags

It's rare for a sequel to live up to the original film, but James Cameron managed to fulfill expectations with Aliens. This summer marks 30 years of the action-packed sci-fi classic, and Fright-Rags has stopped its grinnin' and dropped new linen with the Aliens 30th Anniversary Collection.

The Aliens box set includes an exclusive shirt designed by Justin Osbourn, a set of four 8x10 lobby cards, and a Bug Stomper sticker, all packaged in a collectible box. The box itself is suitable for display, featuring an embossed Xenomorph emerging from it. Only 500 exist.

Abrar Ajmal, Christopher Lovell, Jeff Zornow, Paul Shipper, and Christopher Franchi each designed a shirt featuring Aliens iconography, from monstrous Xenomorphs to fearless heroine Ellen Ripley. All designs can be purchased in both men's and women's sizes.

Osbourn's shirt is exclusive to the box set, but you can own the design on a baseball tee separately. Franchi also put a personal spin on the Bug Stomper logo seen in the film, which comes on a royal blue heathered tee. Finally, a pair of custom-knit crew socks feature Xenomorphs and Power Loaders.

"I'm sure I'm probably not alone when I say that Aliens was my first introduction to the Alien franchise," states Fright-Rags founder Ben Scrivens. "Yup, I saw the sequel first! It still remains my personal favorite of the series and just doesn't get old no mater how many times I watch it."

The Aliens collection is on sale now at Fright-Rags.com.

Quantities are limited, so act quickly before it's game over, man.

SOUTHBOUND comes to UK disc and digital August.

One of the biggest highlights of FrightFest Glasgow 2016, Southbound is a twisted and shocking anthology horror from the minds behind the V/H/S trilogy, which comes to UK disc and Digital this August.

On a desolate stretch of desert highway, weary travelers -  two men on the run from their past, a band on their way to the next gig, a man struggling to get home, a brother in search of his long-lost sister and a family on vacation - are forced to confront their worst fears and darkest secrets in a series of five interlocking tales of terror.

With interwoven chapters that tell tales of misadventure along the same stretch of lonely highway, Southbound keeps you on the edge of your seat with a chilling blend of overarching dread and big frights.

Meeting rapturous acclaim at Glasgow FrightFest 2016, the film has evoked comparisons with some of the truly great anthology titles of the past such as The Twilight Zone thanks to its creepy premise, otherworldly sense of dread and its neat, twisted conceit.

Actor Anton Yelchin dies - Aged 27.

Absoloutely devastating news broke earlier today, with the announcement of the death of actor Anton Yelchin in a freak car accident at his property in Los Angeles.

Probably best known for playing the young Chekov in the new Star Trek films, he had also appeared in the crime thriller Alpha Dog (2006) and teen comedy Charlie Bartlett (2007) as well as appearing as the young Kyle Reese in Terminator : Salvation (2009). His horror credits included Fright Night (2011), Burying the Ex (2014) and more recently Green Room (2015), which saw him appearing opposite fellow Star Trek alumni Patrick Stewart.

According to the police, he had pulled into his drive way and had left the car in neutral whilst walking back down to the mail box at the end of the drive. The car rolled backwards and pinned him against the brick wall. He was found later that evening by friends, after failing to show up for their scheduled band practice.

Born in Russia, his parents moved to the US in the late 80s and was their only child. The actor's publicist, Jennifer Allen, confirmed the actor's death and said his family had requested privacy.

At 27 years old, he was way too young to be taken from us, but at least he leaves us with an impressive list of films to remember him by.  RIP Anton, you will be missed by fellow horror and sci-fi fans alike!

PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES - UK DVD and Blu-Ray review

Jane Austen’s literary classic gets a zombie make-over in this re-imagining of the popular period drama, which is released to UK DVD and BD this month from Lionsgate.

Set in the 19th century, the Bennet family (headed up by Charles Dance – TVs Game of Thrones, Underworld : Awakening) are looking for suitable husbands for their 5 daughters.

But with a zombie outbreak having ravaged nearby London, which is now contained within a giant canal (which rather resembles the outline of the M25) and the Army busy trying to put down zombie outbreaks in the surrounding countryside, this is proving to be no easy task.

During a zombie attack at a nearby estate, one of the daughters, Elizabeth (Lily James – TVs Downton Abbey) catches the attention of a certain Colonel Darcy (Sam Riley - Malificent), after she and her siblings manage to single handedly fend off the undead with their martial arts skills.

Unfortunately, Elizabeth finds him too arrogant to be likeable and instead becomes enamoured with the much more affable Lieutenant Wickham (Jack Huston – TVs Boardwalk Empire), much to the chagrin of her mother who’s trying to fix her up with the local parson (played by Matt Smith – TVs Dr Who).

Will Elizabeth find a way out of this love triangle and work out which man she should marry, or will the zombies engulf England before she can make her mind up?

Based on the parody novel by Seth Graeme-Smith, which in turn was based on the Jane Austen original. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is basically the same story as Jane Austen’s, but with the male leads all being Army officers in this and there’s a few more zombies. But aside from that, it’s essentially the same (kind of) and was bloody good fun!

There's some great martial arts fighting and some nice zombie gore, though being a 15 certificate is not overly bloody. The film also benefited from a strong supporting cast, which also included Lena Headey (Dredd, TVs - Sarah Conner Chronicles) Suki Waterhouse (Insurgent) and Bella Heathcote (The Neon Demon) and was almost like watching a BBC period drama, but with zombies.

The film is released to Digital, DVD and BD June 27th. The disc releases include a selection of deleted scenes, a gag reel and several making-of features, featuring behind the scenes footage and interviews with the cast and crew, as extras.

HOLLYWOOD HORROR HOUSE

By 1970, the once golden age of Hollywood glamour and stardom was a tragic last hurrah represented by the decayed and deteriorated Hollywood Sign. In HOLLYWOOD HORROR HOUSE, we'll go below the sign, to a decaying hilltop mansion of a once great star, played by a once great star, Miriam Hopkins. The fabled Ms. Hopkins, toast of the town back in the thirties with box office hits like Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde and Becky Sharpe, was an A-list actress and Oscar nominee.

Another Oscar winner (Best Supporting Actress 1936) Gale Sondergaard plays Miss Hopkins' loyal friend and housekeeper, who tries to save her friend from the handsome stranger, played by son of acting legend John Garfield. He may be the culprit littering the land around the Hollywood sign with hacked up body parts.

This hellish time capsule showcasing late 60s/early 70s Hollywood, remains an early example of the slasher films which would follow in just a few years. See Miriam Hopkins trapped in a madhouse of hacked up blood-splattered bodies, tripped out drug sequences, murder by electric knives and a Hollywood Christmas Parade with a drunk out of control movie star as its Grand Marshall.

RIVER - screening at Edinburgh film festival ahead of its DVD release

Screening at the Edinburgh International Film Festival 23rd and 25th June and coming to UK DVD and Download 18th July comes comes director Jamie M Dagg's thriller RIVER.

After refusing to obey a senior surgeon, John Lake (Rossif Sutherland), an American volunteer doctor in Laos, is instructed to take a leave of absence. To regroup, he travels to a remote island in the south of Laos. But the solace of the island is shattered when John intervenes in the sexual assault of a young Laotian woman and events spiral out of control, leaving John on the run from the law. What follows is a harrowing journey through the Laotian interior that will test and transform John in profound ways.

Director, Jamie M. Dagg - who won Best First Feature Film for RIVER at the Canadian Screen Awards - does a tremendous job of not only keeping you glued to John’s plight and flight, but also making Laos the second character in the film. The country is by turns idyllic and menacing as it helps and hinders John’s escape. In this respect, the film is an extraordinary two-hander between Laos and John, played brilliantly by Rossif Sutherland - son of Donald and half-brother of Kiefer. Sutherland is utterly convincing as an American alien trapped in a hostile foreign land; a man drawing closer and closer to the edge as he teeters over a huge moral dilemma.

Tense, gripping and fueled by paranoia, River keeps you guessing with a story as twisting as the Mekong River itself. How far would you go to help someone in need? And how far would you go to escape the law?

JOHN FALLON'S "THE SHELTER" TO SPOOK US CINEMAS THIS FALL

Uncork’d Entertainment has acquired US and Canadian rights to the horror-thriller The Shelter, with both a theatrical and digital release planned for the fall.

Written & directed by John Fallon and produced by Fallon and Donny Broussard, The Shelter stars Michael Paré (Eddie and the Cruisers, The Virgin Suicides) in one of his most acclaimed performances in recent times

In The Shelter, widower and homeless man Thomas Jacobs (Michael Paré) finds shelter for the night when he falls upon a vast two-story house with the lights on and an inviting open front door.

He strolls on in thinking he just caught a lucky break and for a while, it would appear as though he did. But soon enough, he realizes that the house won’t let him leave, as its doors are all locked while its windows cannot be opened or broken. Destiny has brought Thomas to this place. What does it want from him? Will he survive the ordeal?

Of his role, Paré said "The Shelter tells a great and painful tragedy, not about global disaster or war or economic collapse but of the individual human heart. The human heart and soul is what all art seeks to unravel. Guilt, regret and shame kill the heart and soul. When our lower animal nature dominates our character our soul is lost."

With visual effects by Thomas Wilson (Insidious, The Conjuring), The Shelter was executive produced by Bruise Productions and JoBlo Movie Productions. Holbrook Multi Media completed the production and post-production elements.

Uncork’d Entertainment’s current releases include Restoration, Decay, A Haunting in Cawdor and All Girls Weekend, released in July.

BACHELOR GAMES - arriving on digital platforms July

The best man usually has a few tricks up his sleeve for the bachelor party, but the groom has a deadly one of his own in horror-comedy BACHELOR GAMES, arriving on digital platforms July 8, from Gravitas Ventures and Strike Films.

When five friends embark on a bachelor weekend in Argentina, everyone expects the usual hedonistic business.  They do not expect to find themselves stranded, wounded, and hunted through the Andes. But that’s just what happens when an elaborate scheme for revenge goes horribly awry.

The Hangover meets The Hills Have Eyes with a Shyamalan-esque twist, BACHELOR GAMES stars a bright young cast led by Charlie Bewley (The Vampire Diaries), Jack Gordon (Fishtank) and Jack Doolan (Cockney’s Vs. Zombies).

BACHELOR GAMES, Best Feature winner at Halloweenapalooza Film Festival and official selection at World Horror Con Film Festival, is the first feature film from award-winning director Edward McGown (Great Barrier Reef with David Attenborough). Written by Sam Michell (BBC’s People Time, It’s Not What You Know) and Chris Hill (The Last Station), Produced by Georgina Edwards of Strike Films (Behind Bars), with Director of Photography by Lucio Bonelli (Everybody Has a Plan) and with the score composed by David Julyan (Insomnia, The Prestige), it will be available on all good digital platforms worldwide from 8th July.
