SHOW PIECES - Launching Today on SHUDDER

From the mind of legendary writer Alan Moore (creator of Watchmen, V For Vendetta and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) and acclaimed photographer and director Mitch Jenkins comes the multi-layered film anthology SHOW PIECES. The film launches on June 29th on AMC Networks-backed Shudder, the premium streaming service for all things thrilling and suspenseful.

Set in the town of Northampton, UK, SHOW PIECES is the first work by Alan Moore written specifically for the screen and the first work to explore the bizarre world and characters that frequent an otherworldly gentlemen's club. The five chapters of SHOW PIECES create a tapestry of madness, malevolence and murderous misdeeds, intersecting to form an original, occult noir thriller with Alan Moore himself appearing in character on screen.

In Chapter One: Act Of Faith, Faith Harrington, a young newspaper reporter with an exotic private life, prepares for a stimulating evening at home that doesn’t go according to plan. In Chapter Two: Jimmy’s End, louche and hard-drinking womaniser James Mitchum finds himself wandering into one strange bar too many.

In Chapter Three: Upon Reflection, Faith’s first bewildered arrival at the club is captured in a fixed security mirror above the club’s oddly anachronistic lounge bar.

The soundtrack to SHOW PIECES features original lyrics by Alan Moore set to music by Adam Drucker and Andrew Broder working as Crook & Flail with help from a cast of vocalists including Tunde Adebimpe (TV On The Radio), Alan Sparhawk (Low) and Nona Invie (Dark Dark Dark).

Shudder is a premium streaming video service, super-serving fans of thrillers, suspense, and horror. Backed by AMC Networks, Shudder has a growing and dynamic selection of thrilling premieres, originals, and exclusives, which complement its impressive library of international and independent films, gripping TV series, and Hollywood blockbuster favourites. Shudder streams ad-free in the US, Canada, UK, and Ireland on the web, iOS, Android, Chromecast, Apple TV, and Roku for £4.99/month or £49.99 with an annual membership. Final Cutz - Indigogo campaign

The SFUAD Film School in Santa Fe, New Mexico is producing it's first ever feature film project - “Final Cutz.” Crewed by students working with professional mentors and SAG actors, the movie is a dark comedy/horror film about a zombie apocalypse that takes place at an art university in the Southwest.

As a virus spreads across the campus infecting staff and students alike - a group of stalwart visionary young film-makers are all that stand between the marauding living-dead and the oblivious city of Santa Fe that lies just beyond the gates of the university. Weaving together homages and tongue-in-cheek references to world cinema with classic cliches from the zombie genre - it is destined to become a cult classic.

They're currently running an Indiegogo campaign with a goal of reaching $10,000 to help make one of the most fun zombie films ever. Principal filming starts July 10th and will wrap August 4th.

The Amityville Horror - UK Blu-Ray Steelbook review.

A family get more than they bargained for when their new home turns out to be haunted, in the classic 1979 horror film “The Amityville Horror” which makes its UK Blu-Ray debut this month, in an extras laden steelbook edition, courtesy of Second Sight films.

George and Cathy Lutz (James Brolin – “Westworld”, “Capricorn One” and Magot Kidder – “Black Christmas”, “Superman 1-4”) have just moved their family into a new home, in the town of Amityville, New York state.

Thrilled at the relatively low price they bought it for, they seem unconcerned about a mass shooting that took place at the property some years previous, in which one of the house’s previous occupants murdered the rest of his family.

But it isn’t too long before they experience all sorts of weird, creepy things. The house is constantly cold, a priest (Rod Stieger - "In the Heat of the Night", "Mars Attacks") comes to visit and immediately falls violently ill. Flies swarm all over the rear window in the attic and the family claim to hear voices, amongst other things.

Are supernatural forces at work, or are the family losing their minds? Or, is it that they simply couldn’t afford the mortgage, so ran out and started telling tall tales to novelist Jay Anson, hoping to earn a few dollars by releasing a book to cash in on the murder house’s notoriety, by claiming its haunted?

Supposedly based on a true story (I think you can guess what my views are on that claim). Amityville Horror isn’t quite in the same league as The Exorcist, (which this was filmed to cash in on the success of) or the far superior Poltergeist, but is still an entertaining ghostly chiller. Which proved highly successful upon its original release and has since gone on to become a classic in it’s own right.

The film has been available on DVD for some time, but this marks the first time it has been released in the UK on Blu-Ray, which looks absolutely stunning in HD and comes jam-packed with special features, as follows...

Introduction by Hans Holzer – Paranormal researcher Hans Holzer, who investigated the Amityville hauntings introduces the film (archive feature, carried over from the old MGM DVD)

Commentary track by Hans Holzer – The paranormal researcher provides an effective trivia track for the film, on both the filming and the actual case. (carried over from the old MGM DVD)

Brolin Thunder (16mins) – Interview with lead actor James Brolin.

Child’s Play (16:30) – Interview with former child actor Meeno Peluce, who played young Matt Lutz.
Amityville Scribe (16:20) – Interview with screenwriter Sandor Stern

The Devil in the Music (14mins) – Interview with composer Lalo Schifrin

My Amityville Horror (1hr:25) – Arguably the best feature on the disc, the original full length 2012 documentary with Daniel Lutz, son of the real George and Kathy Lutz, talking about what happened to him and his family when they moved into the Amityville house

For God’s sake get out (20:40) – Another archival feature, originally filmed for the 2005 DVD release, featuring interviews with James Brolin and Margot Kidder talking about the making of the film (carried over from the old MGM DVD).

Lastly there the Theatrical trailer, TV spot,  and Radio spots which were also on previous DVD releases of the film.

A very nice mixture of new and archival features. However, those who own the old MGM DVD will note that the History Channel documentaries, “Amityville Haunting” and “Horror or Hoax”, which were included on that, have not been carried over onto this release. But I think the inclusion of the full length My Amityville Horror documentary here more than makes up for that.

The Amityville Horror is released to UK BD June 26th in a limited edition steelbook which also contains
reproduction lobby card postcards.

Dark Thriller 'Bluebeard' - UK Premiere 10 July

South Korea has become known for its gripping thrillers featuring psychopaths and serial killers yet Bluebeard offers something new as its mysteries unfold through the eyes of an increasingly unreliable narrator...

In a town with a history of unsolved murders, neurotic doctor Seung-hoon is given cause to believe the residents of the butcher shop he lives above are processing more than just meat after spotting a bloody bag and over-hearing a half mumbled confession. Could the creepy butchers possibly be a pair of serial killers or is the doctor losing his mind? In psychological thriller Bluebeard, director Lee Soo-yeon (The Uninvited) lays a trail of gruesome hints to keep the truth just out of reach of her paranoid protagonist.

Shouldering the burden of a plot rife with dramatic twists and chilling turns, lead actor Cho Jin-woong, recognisable to UK audiences from his role in Park Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden, provides a multifaceted performance as the fear-gripped doctor.

He’s ably supported by the superbly sinister duo of Kim Dae-myeong (Inside Men) and veteran actor Shin Koo (Christmas in August) as his ominous butcher-shop neighbours.

With Bluebeard, director Lee Soo-yeon utilises the cramped, claustrophobic environments of a city that’s simmering under a history of serial killings and unsolved murders to expertly crank up the tension until the film’s shocking finale.

The London Korean Film Festival 2017 presents Bluebeard at Regent Street Cinema, Monday 10 July and Arts Picturehouse Cambridge, Monday 24 July.

Silently Within Your Shadow - Now on Amazon Prime

Following an international run at close to 50 festivals and a 10-venue tour of London, Scott Lyus’ haunting psychological horror short Silently Within Your Shadow is finally available to the public, Exclusively via Amazon Prime.

Penned by Lyus and starring Sophie Tergeist, Byron Fernandes, and horror icon Bill Moseley (The Devils Rejects, Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Silently Within Your Shadow tells the tale of Lucette, a budding young ventriloquist, and her struggles with an unconventional love triangle.

Her boyfriend, Jace, becomes increasingly concerned about the state of their relationship as tensions heighten among himself, Lucette, and her partner in pine, Hugo. To Jace, Hugo is just an inanimate doll, but to Lucette Hugo is so much more and might possibly be more real than anyone could imagine.

Hugo is voiced by Moseley, who brings a stark sense of dread and darkness to Lucette’s perturbing puppet, who makes Slappy, Annabelle, Chucky, et al feel pretty wooden by comparison.

Lyus, and the same team that helped bring this film to life, are just about to drop their latest short, Echoes of the Passed, on the horror world, which you can keep up-to-date with over on Twitter and check out the official trailer here. So while you wait for Lyus’ next horror offering, check out the award winning Silently Within Your Shadow, which we know will pull a few of your strings.

"From A House On Willow Street" on UK DVD & Digital 17th July

The Last Exorcism meets Don’t Breathe in this tense and terrifying horror film that sees a criminal gang discovering that hell hath no fury like a kidnapped woman who’s been possessed by an ancient, demonic force.

After a young woman, Katherine, is kidnapped, her captors videotape her and send the tape to her parents asking for a ransom. Getting no reply, they go back to Katherine’s house where they find her parents are dead.

Unfortunately there is more to Katherine than meets the eye - she has been possessed by an ancient evil which is now intent on turning the tables on her tormentors, who soon come to realize that, in fact, they may be the ones in danger.

Starring Carlyn Burchell as the formidably fearsome Katherine, a hapless victim turned horrific foe, and genre favourite Sharni Vinson, star of You’re Next and the brilliant 2013 remake of Patrick. "From A House On Willow Street" mixes the thrills of Don’t Breath and The Collector, with the supernatural chills of The Last Exorcism, and the weird and wild single location terrors of The Void - and is executed with devilish assurance by horror director Alastair Orr, the man behind the cult 2011 creature feature Indigenous.

The Autopsy of Jane Doe - UK DVD review

CSI meets The Conjuring in director Andre Ovredal’s “The Autopsy of Jane Doe” which comes to UK digital outlets and on BD and DVD this month from Lionsgate.

Set in a small town in Virginia, the Sheriff drops off the body of an unknown girl at the funeral home of Tommy Tilden (Brian Cox – Manhunter, Red, Trick r Treat), who also happens to be the town’s coroner.

Found at the scene of a mass murder, with no obvious sign of death, they ask if he can work late and try to identify her and find out what killed her. But as the examination gets underway Tommy and his son Austin (Emile Hirsch – Killer Joe, Alpha Dog) find this is no ordinary case.

The body seems perfectly preserved, but appears to have been dead for some time. Also, whilst the outside of the body has no visible marks, the inside appears the have been carved up and burned.

But these anomalous findings turn out to be the least of their worries. As the autopsy continues, strange things start happening at the morgue. The lights go out, bodies go missing from the cooler, strange figures are glimpsed in the next room, only to find no one there upon closer inspection and they find themselves trapped in examination room with something attacking them in the dark. Is there something evil at work, or is it in there imaginations?

A decidedly chilling horror tale, featuring a good cast, which is part cop drama, part supernatural thriller. If you liked The Conjuring, Insidious or Ouija, you should love this.

I was sent the DVD to review which, extras wise, included a 5min interview with director Andre Ovredal, conducted by Journalist Alan Jones, recorded at the 2016 Frightfest. Which is the same that can be found on the BD release.

"The Autopsy of Jane Doe" is released to UK Disc and Digital outlets June 26th from Lionsgate.
