He says premiering the film on Amazon Prime is a perfect way to get the movie out to as many people as possible in the quickest manner possible. “We can let a ton of people see the flick without signing any lengthy contracts that tie up our rights for years,” says Kangas.

After October 31st the film will be available for streaming but most likely won’t be free, says the director.

Ghost Stories of an Antiquary, MR James stories adaptated as graphic novel

SelfMadeHero is pleased to announce the publication of John Reppion and Leah Moore's MR James adaptations, GHOST STORIES OF AN ANTIQUARY: VOLUME 1, just in time for Hallowe'en.

Adapted from the short stories of M.R. James, master of the English ghost story, this volume re-imagines four of his most compelling stories in graphic form. These atmospheric, terrifying supernatural stories are to be read on a dark winter’s night with the wind blowing outside and the fire dwindling to a glow.  M.R. James had an enormous influential on many horror writers including Ruth Rendell and Neil Gaiman.

Canon Alberic’s Scrap-book tells of an English tourist who, on a visit to a Cathedral at the edge of the French Pyrenees, buys an ancient manuscript containing a mysterious and demonic illustration that isn’t confined to the page. The story is illustrated by Aneke, a Madrid-based comics artists who has worked on Red Sonja and Vampirella, among others.

Lost Hearts recounts the tale of an orphan who is sent to stay with his elderly cousin, an alchemist obsessed with his own immortality. Drawn by London-based Kit Buss, whose previous work includes Channel 4’s The Thrill Electric and Geek and Sundry’s D&G based show, Critical Role.

In The Mezzotint, a university museum curator acquires a print that seems to change with every subsequent viewing. Illustrator Fouad Mezher works in comics and children’s books. Based in Lebanon, his comics have appeared in Samandal Comics Magazine and Risha Project, among others.

The Ash-tree: Sir Richard Castrington inherits a country seat that has been cursed since the times of his ancestors. The rumours of witchcraft seem to emanate from an ancient ash tree. Scotland-based Alisdair Wood works primarily in video games on cult franchises such as Grand Theft Auto and Max Payne. He is co-creator of anthology comic, Horrere.

M.R. James (1862 – 1936) has had an enormous influence on many writers, including Ruth Rendell and Neil Gaiman. He himself was an admirer of Shakespeare and Agatha Christie, but heavily critical of James Joyce and Aldous Huxley.

M.R. James’s stories reflect the author’s own love of medieval studies. Intended to be read aloud, it’s not surprising that many of his tales have been adapted regularly by the BBC for radio and television, and are considered the perfect Christmas ghost stories.

Ghost Stories Of An Antiquary: Volume 1 is published by SelfMadeHero on 27 October (64pp, colour, paperback, rrp £9.99).

Both John Reppion and Leah Moore will be attending this year's Lakes International Comic Arts Festival, which runs 14 - 16 October. Full details: www.comicartfestival.com

New restoration of Hammer's ONE MILLION YEARS BC

ONE MILLION YEARS B.C. is the spectacular prehistoric adventure that gave the world the most iconic bikini shot of all time, and made a star of fur-clad Raquel Welch. An epic tale of man’s battle for survival at the dawn of civilisation, rival tribes the Rock People and the Shell People battle not only the gigantic prehistoric monsters and each other, but the earth itself, still heaving, bubbling and boiling in its volcanic state.

Billed as the 100th production from the legendary Hammer production house, the highlight of the film was without doubt the stop-motion dinosaur animation by legendary special effects animator Ray Harryhausen.  The result was Hammer’s biggest commercial success, and the big screen's most famous dinosaur epic right up until the release of Jurassic Park 26 years later.

This 50th Anniversary special 4k restoration includes a host of new special features, including interviews with the film’s stars Raquel Welch and Martine Beswick (the two-time Bond girl), and original artwork by Ray Harryhausen, including never-before-seen storyboards exclusively given to Studiocanal by the Ray & Diana Harryhausen Foundation.

The Ray & Diana Harryhausen Foundation is a charitable Trust set up by Ray on the 10th April 1986. It is the primary aim of the Foundation to protect Ray’s name and body of work as well as archiving, preserving and restoring Ray’s extensive collection, which is estimated as holding in excess of 50,000 items. From this archive, the Foundation has provided unique imagery of Ray's mixed-media storyboards, key drawings and creature designs for ONE MILLION YEARS B.C., as well as photography of original latex models from the film as they survive into the 21st century. Most excitingly, this release will reveal fully for the first time detailed notes and storyboard for an unfilmed Brontosaurus sequence, which was originally planned as the film's dramatic climax. http://www.rayharryhausen.com

STUDIOCANAL will release the title on Doubleplay DVD and Blu-ray on October 24th 2016, including the following extras:

Special Features
New Interview with Raquel Welch
New Interview with Martine Beswick
Exclusive Ray Harryhausen stills, storyboard and artwork

THE EYES OF MY MOTHER - Premiering at BFI London Film Festival

Arts Alliance Distribution announces its acquisition of the critically acclaimed American gothic horror THE EYES OF MY MOTHER, directed by Nicolas Pesce. Arts Alliance will release the film in UK cinemas early 2017 through Park Circus under their Future Classics label. The film will also celebrate its UK festival Premiere at the 60th BFI London Film Festival 2016 on the 9th and 10th October, with the Director in attendance.

The hauntingly beautiful and shockingly original debut from filmmaker Nicolas Pesce stars Kika Magalhaes, Will Brill, Clara Wong, Flora Diaz and Joey Curtis-Green, is produced by Jacob Wasserman, Schuyler Weiss, Max Born, and executive produced by Borderline Films’ Antonio Campos, Sean Durkin and Josh Mond. The film fuses classic horror ingredients with gothic black-and-white imagery and was called the “discovery of this year’s Sundance” by Indiewire’s Eric Kohn, where it was in the Official Selection category.

Francisca (played by Kika Magalhaes in a breakout performance) has seemingly been unfazed by death from an early age - her mother, formerly a surgeon in Portugal, imbued her with a thorough understanding of the human anatomy. When tragedy shatters her family’s idyllic life in the countryside, her deep trauma gradually awakens some unique curiosities. As she grows up, her desire to connect with the world around her takes a distinctly dark form.

THE EYES OF MY MOTHER will feature in the 60th BFI London Film Festival 2016 on the following dates:

9 Oct 18:30 Prince Charles Cinema

10 Oct 13:15 NFT3 (BFI Southbank)

DON'T KNOCK TWICE - in cinemas early 2017

Coming to UK cinemas in the new year, Caradog James's DON'T KNOCK TWICE.

For Jess, life has never been better. A successful American sculptor, she has recently returned to the UK, where she spent much of her troubled youth. Now happily married, wealthy and settled, all that remains to make her life complete is to rebuild her relationship with Chloe, the daughter she was forced to give up nine years ago. So when Chloe agrees to come and live with her, Jess is optimistic that she can make amends and be a good mother once more.

What Jess doesn’t know is that Chloe has not come to stay because she wants to get to know her mother again. She has come because she is scared that a supernatural curse has claimed the life of her boyfriend, Danny, and is now coming for her. Chloe and Danny made the mistake of revisiting an abandoned house, once home to ‘Ginger’, a mysterious old woman said by some to be a witch. Local legend says that if you knock on her door then the vengeful ghost of Ginger will snatch you away to her hellish limbo.

At first Jess puts Chloe’s erratic behaviour down to the trauma of her past and the resentment she still feels for being abandoned. But soon Jess comes to realise that she is all that stands between her daughter and a formidable and terrifying supernatural force. Thrown into a battle for survival, Jess must learn the truth behind the legend of the witch and ultimately make the bravest sacrifice of all and knock on Ginger’s door herself...

Hershell Gordon Lewis - the "Godfather of Gore" dies

We're very sad to report that legendary cult film maker Hershell Gordon Lewis has passed away, at the age of 87.

Gordon Lewis directed films such as Blood Feast, The Gruesome Twosome and Two Thousand Maniacs. He died in his sleep at his home in Pompano Beach, Florida, his spokesman James Saito confirmed.

The director pioneered the horror genre in the 1960s known as the "splatter film," which intentionally focused on gore and gruesomeness. Blood, violence and nudity usually featured heavily in his films - many of which he financed himself.

Other horror films directed by Gordon Lewis included A Taste of Blood, The Wizard of Gore, Colour Me Blood Red and Just for the Hell of It

John Waters, Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino and James Gunn are among the modern-day filmmakers who were inspired by his work.

Gunn posted his condolences on Twitter, writing: "RIP Herschell Gordon Lewis, the creator of splatter films and the director of Blood Feast & Two Thousand Maniacs. He changed cinema."

Gordon Lewis was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1929. He went on to study journalism in college and became a professor of English literature at Mississippi State University.

The director briefly worked for a radio station in Oklahoma before joining an advertising agency in Chicago, where he made TV commercials. His first film credit came in 1959 with the release of The Prime Time, which he produced, and two years later, he directed his first movie - Living Venus.

He continued directing films for the next decade but took a break after 1972's The Gore Gore Girls to work in marketing. He returned to filmmaking in 2002 with Blood Feast 2: All U Can Eat.

RIP Hershell and thanks for all the films!

UNDER THE SHADOW - review

A young Iranian woman has to protect her daughter, not only from the falling bombs of the Iran-Iraq war, but also something sinister that’s lurking in her apartment in Iranian director Babak Anvari’s Under the Shadow, which is released to UK cinemas this Friday, 30th September.

Set in 1980s Tehran, in a post revolution Iran, the Iran-Iraq war is still in full swing. With bombs reigning down on the city, her husband conscripted into the military and other tenants in her building moving out in favour of safer environments, young mother Sheideh (Narges Rashidi) becomes increasingly isolated in her block of flats.

But its seems the constant air-raids may be the least of her worries. When her young daughter starts complaining of strange goings on, she discovers something sinister has taken up residence there. It starts with items go missing, Sheidah then starts having strange nightmares, then her young daughter starts complaining about an imaginary friend who may not be all that imaginary as the ghostly going on start to escalate and they realise supernatural elements are at work…

For a low budget debut film, I was extremely impressed at just how professional this looked and director Babak Anvari manages to successfully capture the fear of living in war-torn Tehrahn and at conveying just how badly women are treated in post-revolution Iran. Sadly, as far as horror films go, I was actually bored by this. One of the problems being that the film is in Arabic, with English subs and generally speaking I’m not a fan of foreign language films, as you spend most of the film reading the subs, rather than watching the movie.

Also, the film was extremely slow. Seems to take ages for anything to happen and what incidents do happen are very few and far between. However, I think the real problem for me was the film was far too reminiscent of The Babadook for my liking, which I wasn’t a fan of either.

The film has been getting rave reviews from other critics though, so if you like “arty” horror films, you’ll probably love it. But if you’re looking for straight up chills, you’ll probably be bored senseless.

Under the Shadows is released to UK cinemas 30th September.

Jamie Lee Curtis talks SCREAM QUEENS - on UK DVD Sept 26

SCREAM QUEENS, TV’s most mischievous and addictive new series arrives on UK DVD 26 September and lead actress Jamie Lee Curtis was more than happy to provide this interview about the show for us....

Q: What was it about this show that made you really want to be a part of it?

Jamie:    You know what, honestly, people have this weird idea that actors are sitting there with stacks of scripts around them like, you know, no, I'm not gonna do that one. No, I'm not gonna do that, you know. No, I mean it's just not the case. We're all trying to get a job. When you get older and you just don't get as many jobs. I don't care if you're a man or a woman. And it's rare that somebody calls you up and says come to my office. Hi, I'd like to write a TV show for you. It's going to be super-funny, super wicked, really smart, really social commentary about the world at large. And you're going to have a great time and it's going to get wild success. There's just not that often that that happens and it's happened to me three times. And every time it's been a wild success. And every time they have written it for me.

Now, that doesn't happen to me. Most people don't write me things. So when they do, whatever alchemy that is, it has seemed to work out really, really well. So it worked out in True Lies, which James Cameron called me at my house and said I'm going to write this. John Cleese wrote A Fish Called Wanda for me with, in that way, I'm going to write this for you, Kevin Kline , Michael Palin, we're going to have a great time, we're going to all make a lot of money. And it'll be really funny. And then the same thing with Ryan Murphy. So there is no decision. It's not lending, it's partnering, having somebody believe in you. And to be honest, I’ve been an actor for a long time and I have not had that most of the time. Most of the time I'm trying to get the job from you three. I'm trying to convince you that I should play Dean Munch in your show, that you're meeting me and then the 1500 other women my age who are in show business, who are trying to get your job, this job.

Q:    So a perfect scenario situation.

Jamie:    Well, it's the dream situation and it's not one you can make happen. There's nothing I can do to make that happen, except live my life, and then the phone rings. And I know that seems like a hackneyed cliché, and yet it's the absolute truth. There's nothing you can do to make that happen with all the frickin social media in the world. I can't make that happen. I can just do what I do. I was hiking in the mountains, four days ago. Do you know what I mean? And it's like, you can’t make it happen. And what you really need is good writing. And each of those movies, True Lies, written by Jim Cameron. Hilarious movie. Written by a guy you wouldn't say is a comedy writer. John Cleese wrote A Fish Called Wanda. He wrote the jokes. You know, the London Underground is not a political movement. That's a joke. And it's frickin funny. And Ryan Murphy, and Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan wrote Scream Queens. And I've been able to throw some lines down in Scream Queens that make me, I have to. Here's what you don't know about me. You see that paper clip? May I borrow it for a minute?

Q:    Yeah.

Jamie:    When I'm in a scene, with Emma Roberts or the girls. Or the really funny people on the show, Nasim Pedrad, Niecy Nash. When Niecy Nash works, go on Twitter to Niecy Nash. You will see. I do scenes where I hold a pen under the table, and I jam it into my hand.

Q:    Is this a trick you've utilized for a while?

Jamie:    My entire career because I laugh. If it's funny, I will laugh. So I cannot hold it. I think Kevin Klein won't speak to me because I ruined more two shots with him when he did something funny that I wasn't expecting him to do. I said look, I can handle the joke that’s written, I hear it, I learn it.  I know the joke is coming. But if you improvise a joke and I'm not expecting it, I'm going to ruin it. And I have come up with this and I do it like this. If you see a scene and my hands are on the table and I'm with Niecy Nash, you know what's in my hand.

Q:    A lot of the girls in the cast seem to really admire you. What's it like working with them?

Jamie:    You know what, I'm a mom of a 28 year old and a 19 year old. I understand that's what older women or, older people get. You have more experience; you've been around a long time. Obviously this is a world I've inhabited a lot. So it’s natural that I will be maternal, because I am a mom, and that's what I look for.  I appreciate that it's hard for me to comment on it 'cause like, you know what I mean, it's not.

Q:    How is it for you working with them?

Jamie:    They are wickedly talented and what I've learned is that when you show up for a Ryan Murphy show, there has not been one second where people have shown up on set with your white piece of paper, like this. All right, what are we doing today? What are my lines? Like, people show up and are like, boom (noises) cut. Okay, your turn. (noises) Like there's none of that.  And you see that on TV shows, you see these people walking around 'cause they don't like their job and they're like. And that's just not the case. These girls have shown up because they know they have been given this precious thing which is great writing. And they know it and like, slam it. I know, we have to go. Thank you.

Q:    Thank you.

First 3 films announced for this years Leicester Zombie Film Festival.

The UK Festival of Zombie Culture in Leicester, which is now in it's 10th year, have announced the first 3 films that will be screened at this years event in November.

ATTACK OF THE LEDERHOSEN ZOMBIES..

The hills are alive with the sound of screaming.

When abandoned snowboarders seek shelter in a garish, loud aprés-ski tavern, things go from bad to worse when a scientific experiment conducted by a local entrepreneur unleashes an epidemic of zombies and mutant wildlife.

But this is mostly lost on the local drunkards as they themselves are not always so easy to distinguish from zombies. Steve, Branka and Josh have to find a way to survive this hellish night.

NIGHT OF SOMETHING STRANGE....

Outrageous horror with a crazy non-stop gore feeling only ever found before in the 80s.....

Teenage friends out for beach week get unexpectedly detoured to a isolated motel where a deadly STD virus now runs rampant, turning those infected into the living dead, schlock comedy horror has a zombie-like Sexually Transmitted Disease wreaking havoc in the remote Redwood Motel during spring break.

Only the strong and resilient will survive the monster genitalia, fanged orifices, wet farts and bloody condoms!

PLAN Z

A new breed of zombie movie has arrived

Not content in sitting back and waiting for the Zombie Apocalypse to consume the world, Craig (Stuart Brennan) prepares for a potential outbreak by stocking up on cans, packing emergency bags, selecting the right tools and even planning his escape routes etc. But when a zombie outbreak actually occurs, it will take all his will to stick to his plan and all of his courage to change it...

Emotive, dark and brilliantly made it is also one of the first zombie films to pose the question "Why survive"???

More films are to be announced.

The festival will also feature the Arcade of the Dead, with some of the Ultimate Zombie games of All Time!

The Best Dressed Zombie Competition is again on the cards with a spectacular prize for the best zombie in attendance...

There will also be Gavin Gore leading his Make Up Artists, turning you into a rotting flesh muncher, so if you need a hand with your make up , then dress undead and get your make up done once you’ve arrived...

Several prolific zombie authors will also be coming down to meet, greet, chat and sign their books for everyone.

DARKWAVE : EDGE OF THE STORM - short film

Check out the short sci-fi thriller "DARKWAVE : EDGE OF THE STORM" from Darkwave Pictures UK.

Considering the film's exceptionally low budget, I think this is pretty damn impressive and is actually a follow up of sorts to an earlier short film entitled THE DRIFT, which I would also suggest you look up.

For more information about this and other projects, visit the official Facebook and Twitter pages.
