HEIR - short film review.

Richard Powell’s unsettling short film “Heir”, which is currently playing at festivals, is a film I had featured on this site once before, albeit rather briefly, as it was screened at last years Mayhem Festival during their scary shorts section. But I was recently contacted by producer Zach Green, who asked if I’d like to give it a rewatch, so I dutifully obliged.

Gordon (as played by Canadian TV actor Robert Nolan) is taking his young teenage son on a trip to meet an old friend of his, Denis (played by genre regular Bill Oberst Jr – Zombie World). But, as we have seen from their internet chat messages during the intro, we know that this is no regular father-son road trip.

Meeting in a diner, where the son seems unawhere of the sinister undertones of the conversation, they soon end up back at the Denis’s place, where the young lad is subsequently drugged and bound up.

But whilst their intentions are sinister, the film then takes a very bizarre sci-fi twist, as we discover that these men are “monsters” in a very literal sense and their intentions towards the boy are not exactly what we had imagined (think Brian Yuzna’s “Society”).

Clocking in at around 11 mins, the director manages to cram in a lot of storytelling in that time and boasts strong performances from both Nolan and Oberst. However, the subject of child abuse and grooming still makes for very uncomfortable viewing, even when dressed up in a sci-fi setting.

The film is doing the rounds on the festival circuit at the moment. If you get chance to see this, do so.

'The Killing of America' makes its FrightFest premiere this weekend!

The film they didn’t want us to see The Killing of America makes its FrightFest premiere this weekend and UK Blu-ray debut in October 2016.

Described as "among the most controversial documentaries in the history of cinema", Sheldon Renan and Academy Award nominee Leonard Schrader’s (Kiss Of The Spider Woman, Mishima, Blue Collar) The Killing of America is a graphic and provocative examination of America’s history, complete with senseless violence, mass shootings and cold-blooded murder.

Never distributed, televised or made available for sale in the United States, this provocative documentary now arrives in the UK, courtesy of Severin Films, in a fully restored edition and makes its FrightFest premiere on 29 August 2016.

A limited theatrical release will follow and, on 24 October, the first ever UK Blu-ray release of the infamous ‘shock doc’ arrives loaded with exclusive special features – including the even more unnerving Japanese version known as Violence U.S.A. – which remains one of the most profoundly disturbing and still chillingly relevant documentary experiences of our time. A DVD version will also be available.

For more info on this screening and other films at the festival visit http://www.frightfest.co.uk

The new UK BD and DVD will be available to pre-order shortly.

Mayhem Film Festival to host UK Premiere of HEADSHOT

Mayhem Film Festival to host UK Premiere of HEADSHOT and live performance from THE DUKE ST WORKSHOP feat. Laurence R. Harvey

With its 12th edition fast approaching, Mayhem Film Festival is proud to announce it will screen the UK Premiere of Headshot from Indonesian duo, Kimo Stamboel and Timo Tjahjanto, aka the Mo Brothers (Macabre, V/H/S/2), at Broadway, Nottingham.

Starring The Raid’s Iko Uwais as Ishmael, Headshot, follows an amnesiac whose violent past comes back to haunt him. After the young doctor who nursed him gets kidnapped, Ishmael finds himself battling gangs of highly-skilled fighters he may have once worked with in the Indonesian underground, sparking fragments of his identity to resurface.

Taking place on 13 – 16 October, this year’s festival will open with a live performance from The Duke St Workshop, featuring cult horror actor Laurence R Harvey (Human Centipede II & III, The Editor), and presented in collaboration with Nottingham-based film club Kino Klubb. The Duke St Workshop will be performing and expanding from their LP, Tales of H.P. Lovecraft, consisting of two Lovecraft stories – ‘From Beyond’ and ‘The Hound’ – told over an hour-long set through meditative tinkles, sputtering howls of eerie electronica and nightmarish narrations. This haunting audio/visual feast is absolutely not to be missed.

"This year the range of films and genres on offer has expanded, explains Mayhem Co-Director Chris Cooke. So it's great that the hyper action and kinetic violence of the Mo Brothers’ latest film, Headshot, as well as the mind-bending horror of H.P. Lovecraft are represented and exist side by side at our festival. Lovecraft really is a crucial architect of the horror genre and this unique event, organised with the ever excellent Kino Klubb is something we're very excited about."

Mayhem Film Festival will take place at Broadway, Nottingham on 13-16 October. Early Bird Passes for the festival are still available at the discounted price of £60 for a limited time only.

Hitler travels back in time in "The Time War"

Award-winning actors Tracey Birdsall and Barry Corbin are filming "The Time War". Writer-director Neil Johnson’s long gestating science-fiction thriller that went into development back in 2010. The film features the legendary Christopher Lee (Lord of the Rings, Star Wars : Attack of the Clones) in one of his final screen roles.

Originally written in 1995, The Time War fixes on the thrilling, entertaining scenario that imagines Adolf Hitler travelling back in time and rewriting history. “Next imagine you try and stop him and make matters much worse…”

Tracey Birdsall, who this year stars in Johnson’s highly-anticipated Rogue Warrior : Robot Fighter, is a favorite of Neil Johnson.

For Barry Corbin, it’s a return to the sci-fi genre. The Texas-born actor’s previous genre efforts include such classics as WarGames, Critters 2 and TV’s The Twilight Zone

Birdsall and Corbin worked together on Dawn of the Crescent Moon - which snared the coveted Best Ensemble Cast Award at Action on Film Festival, rapidly becoming one of the most reputable independent film festivals in the world.

Filmmaker Johnson was so sure that the film would get made one day that in November of 2010, he paid Sir Christopher Lee to record an opening narration while at Abbey Road studios on other business.  Johnson didn’t realize that this would be the last time that he would see the acclaimed actor, who passed in 2015.

"Mr Lee had killed a number of Nazis during WW2, so it was very apt that the great Nazi Hunter gave his great talent to this wonderfully unique film,” said Johnson.

Additional casting to be announced.

ASH vs EVIL DEAD comes to UK DVD Sept

Grab your chainsaw and get ready for some serious demon-bashing as Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment’s ASH vs EVIL DEAD arrives on DVD from 19th September.

ASH vs THE EVIL DEAD is the long-awaited follow-up to the cult favourite horror film franchise The Evil Dead from the original filmmakers Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, Bruce Campbell and Craig DiGregorio.

Twenty Four years since the last instalment of the Evil Dead trilogy, action legend Bruce Campbell (Evil Dead trilogy, Burn Notice) returns as Ashley J. "Ash" Williams for another bout of ass-kicking the evil dead.

Ash (Campbell) now works at the "ValueShop" mart as a stock boy, and the aging lothario and chainsaw-handed monster hunter has spent the last 30 years avoiding responsibility, maturity and the terrors of the Evil Dead.

His life has gone nowhere and he now lives in a trailer, drinking in bars at night and having casual affairs with various women, usually after making up a sensational story about how he lost his hand. After having inadvertently read the incantation from the Book of the Dead again, he unleashes the Kandarian Demon one more time. A new set of events brings him to assume his former fighting persona and face the new demonic plague in order to save the human race.

Its bloody, funny and brilliant fun for fans of the original series and horror films in general, so don’t miss the chance to go deeper into the world of ASH vs EVIL DEAD as it arrives on DVD on 19th September.

Road Games - UK DVD review

Road Games, a film that does for rural France what Wolf Creek did for the Australian outback, is available from UK VOD and DVD outlets this month from the Frightfest Presents label.

Jack (Andrew Simpson – The Survivalist) is an English teenager, stranded in rural France, who is trying to hitch a ride back to Calais. Unfortunately, with police reports of a serial killer on the loose, he’s not having a lot of luck getting a ride. By a strange twist of fate, he meets up with a young French backpacker named Veronique (Joséphine de La Baume – Kiss of the Damned, Rush), who’s in a similar situation, and as they’re heading the same way, decide to try and hitch a ride together.

When they are offered a lift by an eccentric Frenchman (Frederic Pierot – The Returned) who bizarrely drives around in a 1970s English Rover car, they think their luck has changed. Particularly when he offers to put them up for the night at his remote farmhouse, because the port of Calais has been shut down by strike action.

But Jack soon comes to realise that when something appears too good to be true, that’s because it isn’t, as something is definitely amiss with their new French friend and his American wife (played by the legendary Barbara Crampton – Re-Animator, You’re Next), who seem warm and welcoming one minute, then cold and unfriendly the next. So when Veronique disappears the next morning and finds himself being unceremoniously shown the door, he realises something is very wrong indeed. But will he live long enough to find out what?

Written and directed by newcomer Abner Pastoll, I was extremely impressed with his feature film directorial debut here, which proved to be a very tense and unnerving thriller. Featuring multiple plot twists and red herrings, that will have you wondering just what the hell is going on, right up till the very end.

Admittedly the film does start off kind of slow as the main characters are being introduced, but the pace quickly picks up once we realise the friendly Frenchman and his wife aren’t so friendly after all and Jack becomes embroiled in a dangerous game of cat and mouse and not just with the French-American couple....

The disc includes a number of special features, including…

Introduction (10 mins) – which is actually an interview with director Abner Pastoll, conducted by journalist Alan Jones.
Making of (6mins) – A behind the scenes look at the film, including interviews with the cast and crew.
Outtakes (6mins) – A collection of outtakes and gaffs
Deleted scenes (7mins) – A collection of several scenes that were either cut or shortened from the film
Trailers (x3)
Bonus trailers for other titles on the Frightfest Presents label.

Road Games is released to VOD and Digital Download 26th August and DVD 29th Aug.

If you liked Haute Tension or the Wolf Creek films (or even if you didn’t), you would be seriously advised to check this one out as this gets a serious thumbs up from me!

The Windmill Massacre - Premiering at this years FrightFest

Nick Jongerius (producer - Frankenstein's Army) directorial debut The Windmill Massacre will be receiving it's European premiere at this years Horror Channel Frightfest ahead of its Digital and DVD release.

When their bus breaks down, a group of unsuspecting tourists are forced to seek shelter in an abandoned barn beside a sinister windmill where, legend has it, a Devil-worshipping miller once ground the bones of locals instead of grain. Inadvertently awakening the mysterious evil in the windmill, members of the group start disappearing, and secrets are revealed that seem to mark them all for doom.

This creepy, ghoulish nail-biter benefits not only from a top quality cast, headed up by the fantastic Noah Taylor (Game of Thrones,  Red, White & Blue) and Patrick Baladi (David Brent’s dance off nemesis in The Office), but also a unique location (a splendidly spooky Dutch windmill), and a terrific new horror villain in the shape of ‘The Miller’, who has some nasty surprises in store for the hapless, stranded tourists.

A fun and nostalgic throwback to edge-of-your-seat horror classics like Friday the 13th and The Nightmare on Elm Street, The Windmill Massacre is a good and gory Dutch treat, with a franchise-worthy villain in the form of The Miller, guaranteed to put viewers in a spin.

Following it's premiere at this years Horror Channel Frightfest, the film will be available from UK digital outlets September 26th, with a DVD release October 3rd.

The Unspoken - UK DVD review

Horror actress Jodelle Ferland has to contend with another Cabin in the Woods, in Sheldon Wilson’s (Shallow Ground, The Hollow) chiller UNSPOKEN, which hits UK Digital outlets this month ahead of its DVD release in September.

Angela (Jodelle Ferland – Cabin in the Woods) takes a childminding job for a single parent mother, who has just moved into a remote house outside of town. She is initially reluctant about accepting the job, partly because the young lad in question is a special needs case, but also because the house has a bit of a reputation amongst the locals, after the previous occupants mysteriously vanished and were believed murdered several years ago.

However, as her father is currently out of work and this job is offering good money, she reluctantly accepts. But it isn’t too long before we realise the stories about the place being haunted might be true, as objects mysteriously rearrange themselves, the handyman hired to help fix up the place vanishes without trace and the housemaid flees the place in abject terror after being spooked by something in the kitchen.

But, it also seems some of the local rednecks have some contraband stashed in the basement of the old property and desperately want it back. So the babysitter and young family may have more to worry about than just paranormal activity…

As with all haunted house/paranormal type films, there are the usual parallels you can draw with other films of this ilk, and I couldn’t help but notice similarities between this and Poltergeist, Amityville, The Pact and (possibly) even The Omen

Be that as it may though, I also found the film to be terrific fun. Particularly during the somewhat bloody climax, where some of the good old boys decide to get their stuff out of the basement by force, only to find they have more than a babysitter and young boy to contend with.

The film also benefits from a strong supporting cast, which includes Lochlyn Monroe (Freddy vs Jason) as Angela’s father and Neal McDonough (Captain America, TVs Arrow) as the Sheriff.

If you like ghostly chillers, you should love this. The film is released in the UK Digitally on 22nd August and will available on UK DVD 5th September from Arrow Films. The disc I was sent was a vanilla disc, without extras on, aside from some bonus trailers for other Arrow titles.

DOOMED! THE UNTOLD STORY OF ROGER CORMAN’S THE FANTASTIC FOUR

Highly-anticipated documentary DOOMED! THE UNTOLD STORY OF ROGER CORMAN’S THE FANTASTIC FOUR, from writer-director Marty Langford, will be distributed in the US and Canada by Uncork’d Entertainment.

Chronicling the history of Roger Corman’s Fantastic Four (1994), DOOMED! features never before seen footage from the production as well as new on-camera interviews with cast and crew including Mr. Corman, Jay Underwood, Michael Bailey Smith, Joseph Culp, Alex Hyde-White and Rebecca Staab.

Langford says DOOMED! was “courted by a number of distributors and he had the luxury of choice.  But once Keith at Uncork’d explained his company’s vision and strategy for our film, we realized that he was obviously the right one. He’s a terrific guy, a great distributor, and partner that we’re lucky to have.”

Uncork’d Entertainment President Keith Leopard says he’s excited to be releasing the definitive account of the never-released movie production and its Fantastic background.

“The average moviegoer doesn’t know that, ten years before releasing Tim Story’s version, Roger Corman was asked to produce a Fantastic Four movie. Unbeknownst to cast and crew, the film was never going to be released though – and for a variety of reasons. Doomed! is such a compelling documentary - and not just for comic book movies but anyone intrigued by the ins and outs of Hollywood and business. In short, it’s a Fantastic movie.”

Arriving in 1984, The Initiation might have been late to the slasher party, but, alongside the likes of The House on Sorority Row and The Mutilator, it remains one of the stronger entries to emerge in the latter days of the slice-and-dice boom.

THE HOWLING 2 - DUAL FORMAT

How do you follow up a film as iconic as Joe Dante’s seminal werewolf epic The Howling? With a star turn from horror legend Christopher Lee and a leather-clad Sybil Danning (The Red Queen Kills Seven Times), Howling II is more than up to the challenge!

After a young woman dies in violent circumstances, her brother is approached by a stranger (Lee) who reveals that she was in fact a werewolf. The brother’s initial scepticism is quickly diffused when he encounters the fanged beasts first-hand. Now the pair, joined by a plucky journalist, must travel to Transylvania to destroy werewolf queen Stirba (Danning), and rid the world of lycanthropes once and for all.

Helmed by director Philippe Mora (Mad Dog Morgan, The Beast Within), who would go on to direct the equally barmy follow-up Howling III: The Marsupials, Howling II is a campy horror extravaganza featuring killer dwarves, werewolf orgies and ‘80s punk rock galore!

When his partner is murdered just days before retirement, Secret Service Agent Richard Chance (William Petersen - Manhunter) begins an obsessive hunt for his killer – counterfeiter and all-round psychopath Eric Masters, played by Willem Dafoe at his villainous prime.

Beautifully shot by Robby Muller (Repo Man, Paris, Texas) and with a driving score with British new wave act Wang Chung, To Live and Die in L.A. looks and sounds exceptional in this brand-new 4K restoration from the original 35mm negative.

DRILLER KILLER - DUAL FORMAT & LTD EDITION STEELBOOK

In career that has encompassed such controversial classics as Ms. 45, Bad Lieutenant and Welcome to New York, none of Abel Ferrara’s films have quite managed to match the shock, extremity and downright notorious nature of The Driller Killer.

Ferrara plays struggling artist Reno, a man pushed to the edge by the economic realities of New York living in the late seventies and the No Wave band practising in the apartment below. His grip on reality soon begins to slip and he takes to stalking the streets with his power tool in search of prey…

One of the most infamous ‘video nasties’, in part thanks to its drill-in-head sleeve, The Driller Killer has lost none of its power to unnerve, and is presented here fully uncut. Available in a special edition Dual Format release and a Limited Edition Dual Format Steelbook.
