Ozploitation classic LONG WEEKEND comes to UK BD

Nature wreaks its revenge when a couple’s careless behaviour causes havoc in the Australian wild, in the Long Weekend.

This 1978 Ozploitation classic from director Colin Eggleston (Innocent Prey), heads to Blu-ray for the first time in the UK with an extras-laden package courtesy of Second Sight on 5 November 2018.

Peter (John Hargreaves – Country Life) and Marcia’s (Briony Behets – Prisoner Cell Block H), relationship is on the rocks, so they head to the wilderness for an away from it all, make or break long weekend.

But in their wake, they leave a trail of destruction – animals run over and tormented, their dog uncared for at home and fires started by their carelessness. They destroy both the countryside around them and any animal or creature that crosses their path…

So Mother Nature strikes back as the creatures and weather take vengeance against the thoughtless, unpleasant pair.

The Blu-ray features audio commentary with executive producer Richard Brennan and Cinematographer Vincent Monton, as well as Nature Found Them Guilty: Examining Long Weekend, a panel discussion with film historians.

CAMP DEATH III in 2D - A Review

Canadian film maker Matt Frame's loving mickey-take out of the Friday the 13th films , CAMP DEATH III in 2D, which has apparently been 4 years in the making, is finally preparing to hit the festival circuits. And he very kindly sent me a screener to review.

Set at the interestingly named Camp Crystal Meth, a summer camp for the "woefully retarded" (clearly the director isn't worried about being politically correct here), the owners are hoping to put its blood drenched past behind it and turn it into a fully functioning summer camp once more.

Though its not helped by the camps grumpy owner, who cheerfuly goes around abusing the kids and staff, making fun of their disabilities and ethnicities. Much to the chagrin of his nephew whose trying to run the place.

But, to make matters worse, seems there's a serial killer on the loose once more. Who appears to be wearing a Michael Myers mask turned inside out, who proceeds to start offing the kids in a variety of rather silly ways.

Some of the more interesting deaths include...

Death by Toilet plunger
Death by Glove Puppet
Death by Electric Strimmer
Death by Cocaine snorting squirrel

Along with a rather silly bike chase through the forest, parodying a scene from Return of the Jedi.

There's a lot of the references to the various Friday the 13th and other 80s slasher movies . For example, one of the caretakers is called Crapsey, a reference to Cropsey from the Burning, another character is Shelby, presumably a reference to Shelly from Friday the 13th part 3 and the camp being for people with mental problems, presumbly a reference to Friday Part 5. But, unless you are an aficionado of 80s slasher movies, you probably won't get all the jokes.

Filmed for a mere, $35,000 Canadian Dollars, using a lot of local actors who've appeared in other independant B-movies. It's a very silly film for sure, the acting might not be the best and probably won't be most people's cup of tea. But it would be unfair to write this off as a poor man's "Scary Movie".

I'm sure it will play well on the festival circuit. So if you are a fan of 80s slashers and get the chance to see it,  check it out.

FILMFEAR Manchester - Programme announced!

The HOME arts cinema and Film4 are excited to announce the programme for the third annual FilmFear season – six days of horror, extreme cinema, cult favourites and special guests coming to Manchester this October.

FILMFEAR PROGRAMME DETAILS

Border (Gräns) - Fri 26 Oct, 20:30

Dir Ali Abbasi/SE DK 2018/108 mins/Swedish wEng ST

Eva Melander, Eero Milonoff, Viktor Ã…kerblom

A customs official with a super-sensitive sense of smell is drawn into a conspiracy that turns out to have a bizarre folkloric twist. Based on a story by John Ajvide Lindqvist, the author of Let the Right One In, this genuinely surprising Scandi thriller blends fantasy, romance and horror to end up as something entirely unique.

Listening event: Nigel Kneale's The Road + Q&A - Sat 27 Oct, 14:30

Dir Charlotte Riches/GB 2018/45 mins

Mark Gatiss, Adrian Scarborough, Hattie Morahan

Mark Gatiss and Adrian Scarborough star as a philosopher and scientist investigating ghostly outbreaks in a country wood in 1768. Nigel Kneale’s legendary lost 1963 TV play has been adapted for BBC Radio 4 by Toby Hadoke.

Event: This special listening event will be followed by a Q&A with actor, writer and comedian Toby Hadoke.

Tickets: Free to anyone attending other FilmFear events

One Cut of the Dead (Kamera o tomeru na!) - Sat 27 Oct, 18:10

Dir Shin'ichirô Ueda/JP 2017/96 mins/Japanese wEng ST

Takayuki Hamatsu, Yuzuki Akiyama, Harumi Shuhama

Beginning with an almost 40-minute single-take set piece that sets the tone for what’s to come, this cult sensation from Japan is a zippy, silly meta-comedy that’s stuffed with great, self-referential gags about making low-budget horror movies. The physical humour is perfectly applied to the zombie action, but it’s the development of the character comedy across the film’s three distinct acts that really helps deliver the crowd-pleasing climax. All together now: POM!

Mandy - Sat 27 Oct, 20:20

Dir Panos Cosmatos/US BE 2018/121 mins

Nicolas Cage, Andrea Riseborough, Linus Roache

A wild and grandiose story of love, revenge and the supernatural, Panos Cosmatos’ follow-up to Beyond the Black Rainbow at times feels like a cinematic sculpture rather than just an out-there, blood-soaked Nicolas Cage movie – though it’s very much the latter too. Cage goes crazy when love of his life Andrea Riseborough is spirited away by a dark-magic cult, and the film itself goes right along with him. This is one you have to see on the big-screen, not just for the visuals but also for the score by the late Johann Johannsson (Sicario, Arrival).

They Live - Sun 28 Oct, 16:00

Dir John Carpenter/US 1988/95 mins

Roddy Piper, Keith David, Meg Foster

Conspiracy theory sci-fi from John Carpenter that’s a firm fan favourite thanks to its mix of goofy B-movie stylings and subversive satire. Aliens move amongst us using subliminal imagery to control our minds. Luckily for humanity, wrestler-turned-actor ‘Rowdy’ Roddy Piper can literally see through their sinister plans with his x-ray specs and he takes the fight to them in a more physical fashion.

They Live also features one of cinema’s all-time great brawls – a real bare-knuckle showstopper – and, of course, another memorable John Carpenter score.

Let the Corpses Tan (Laissez bronzer les cadavres) - Sun 28 Oct, 18:20

Dirs Hélène Cattet, Bruno Forzani/FR BE 2017/92 mins/French wEng ST

Elina Löwensohn, Stéphane Ferrara, Bernie Bonvoisin

The directors of Giallo tributes Amer and The Strange Colour of Your Body’s Tears return with a ferocious take on Euro Westerns and the Italian ‘Poliziotteschi’ genre. A remote artist’s hilltop hideaway is the setting for an all-guns-blazing stand-off between crooks and cops in this violently beautiful work of art, a film in which infinite care has been lavished on every single extreme second.

Assassination Nation - Mon 29 Oct, 18:10

Dir Sam Levinson/US 2018/110 mins

Odessa Young, Hari Nef, Suki Waterhouse

A clique of high school girlfriends find their lives exposed when a stranger starts revealing their online secrets to the world, forcing them to take no prisoners in an attempt to calm the storm of scandal. The biting black comedy and violent action is a blast, but there’s also a strong horror vibe to this tale of societal breakdown.

Videoman (Videomannen) - Mon 29 Oct, 20:40

Dir Kristian A. Söderström/SE 2018/93 mins/Swedish wEng ST

Stefan Sauk, Lena Nilsson, Morgan Alling

One of the stand-out discoveries at August’s FrightFest, this mystery-thriller will strike a chord with anyone who’s ever collected VHSs, DVDs or any form of physical media. It’s also a treat for retro horror fans, as it follows the travails of a videotape obsessive who gets his hands on a rare item that could solve all his problems. However, his carefully ordered existence (and tape archive) is threatened when the Giallo-style plots of his favourite films intrude into his everyday life. All of a sudden, not rewinding a tape doesn’t seem like such a heinous crime after all.

Possum + Q&A - Tue 30 Oct, 18:20

Dir Matthew Holness/GB 2018/85 mins

Sean Harris, Alun Armstrong, Charlie Eales

Harris is on magnificently twisted form as Philip, a troubled children’s puppeteer battling surreal secrets from his past and Possum, the hideous hand puppet he keeps in a black leather case. Philip finds escaping the will of Possum is as hard as dealing with his demons.

Event: We will be joined by director Matthew Holness for a Q&A following this screening.

The Fog - Tue 30 Oct, 20:40

Dir John Carpenter/US 1980/90 mins

Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis, Janet Leigh

Looking to continue the terror but in a different style, John Carpenter followed up his smash-hit Halloween with this effectively spooky ghost story evocatively set in a California coastal town. One hundred years after the sinking of a ship in local waters a mysterious fog rolls in, bringing with it strange events and spectral figures. A roll-call of genre favourites – Jamie Lee Curtis, Janet Leigh and Adrienne Barbeau – attempt to solve the mystery, with Carpenter providing a supernatural atmosphere and a spine-tingling score.

St. Agatha - Wed 31 Oct, 18:30

Dir Darren Lynn Bousman/US 2018/90 mins

Sabrina Kern, Carolyn Hennesy, Courtney Halverson

An atmospheric chiller from director Darren Lynn Bousman, veteran of the Saw franchise (II, III and IV). A young pregnant woman, desperate to keep her identity secret, identifies a rural convent as a safe place to have her baby. However, this sinister story goes to some very dark places as the domineering Mother Superior’s gruesome plans are slowly revealed.

The Evil Dead - Wed 31 Oct, 20:40

Dir Sam Raimi/US 1981/85 mins

Bruce Campbell, Ellen Sandweiss, Richard DeManinco.

A horror classic returns to the big-screen for Halloween, with cult leading-man Bruce Campbell fighting the eternal evil laying siege to his cabin in the woods. Stephen King dubbed this ‘the ultimate experience in gruelling terror’ back in the early 80s and, although it’s since been reappraised by some as a horror-comedy, King’s initial take still stands – despite some slapstick gore, director Sam Raimi’s remarkable debut is relentless, ferocious and unapologetic nightmare fuel.

DEAD NIGHT on UK DVD October 8th

Following its European Premiere at Arrow Video FrightFest 2018, STUDIOCANAL announces that DEAD NIGHT will be arriving on DVD and Digital Download 8 October 2018 – just in time for Halloween!

James, his wife Casey, their two kids Jessica and Jason, and sick friend Becky head to a remote cabin in Oregon for a weekend trip. When James ventures into the dark forest looking for firewood, he encounters an enigmatic woman passed out in the snow.

Bringing her back to the cabin for help, the family has no way of knowing that her wicked presence will be the catalyst for a series of horrifying events that will change their lives forever. DEAD NIGHT is The Shining meets Cabin in The Woods in a very modern horror full of twists and turns.

Everything and anything goes in to this ambitiously quirky delight, oozing eeriness and evil, from the producers of John Dies At The End and Phantasm: Ravager.

DEAD NIGHT features a stellar cast including horror icon Barbara Crampton (Re-Animator, You’re Next, We Are Still Here) with a strong supporting cast of genre favourites including AJ Bowen (The Guest, House Of The Devil) and Brea Grant (Halloween II, ‘Dexter’).

BAD SAMARITAN coming to UK DVD October

One bad night - one bad decision - can haunt you forever, as Misfits and Mute star Robert Sheehan goes up against Jessica Jones and Doctor Who star David Tennant, here on sensationally nasty form, in a white-knuckle home invasion thriller from the producers of Independence Day.

Struggling photographer Sean Falco (Sheehan), who funds his lifestyle with a sideline in burglary, thinks he has hit the jackpot when he breaks into the luxurious house of the wealthy Cale Erendreich (Tennant).

Things go wrong when Sean discovers a woman chained up in the house. Unable to free her before Cale returns, Sean reluctantly goes to the police to explain what he’s seen. By the time they investigate, Cale has covered his tracks, and the police tell Sean to stop harassing him. Sean soon realises Cale will stop at nothing to shut him up - permanently.

A slick, shocking, knockout good time, BAD SAMARITAN takes home invasion thrillers The Collector and Don’t Breathe and ramps things through the roof.

BAD SMARITAN is released to UK DVD October 8th from Signature Entertainment.

Meet the team standing between you and the Predator

With less than a week to go until THE PREDATOR hits UK cinemas and IMAX 3D, Twentieth Century Fox would like to introduce you to the team standing between you and the ultimate Predator with this brand new clip

From the outer reaches of space to the small-town streets of suburbia, the hunt comes home in Shane Black’s explosive reinvention of the Predator series. Now, the universe’s most lethal hunters are stronger, smarter and deadlier than ever before, having genetically upgraded themselves with DNA from other species. When a young boy accidentally triggers their return to Earth, only a ragtag crew of ex-soldiers and a disgruntled science teacher can prevent the end of the human race.

Directed by Shane Black and starring Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Sterling K. Brown, Alfie Allen, Thomas Jane, Augusto Aguilera, Jake Busey and Yvonne Strahovski, THE PREDATOR arrives in cinemas and IMAX 3D on September 12.

REVENGE - A Review

Hell hath no fury like a woman with a pump action shotgun in Coralie Fargeat's vigilante thriller REVENGE which is out on Digital this month.

Jen (Matilda Lutz  - Rings) is taken away by her boss Richard (Kevin Janssens - TV's Salamander) for a dirty weekend at his remote luxury condo, which happens to be on the edge of a desert.

But when a couple of his friends, who he'd planned a hunting trip with, show up early and the booze and drugs start flowing. Things quickly get out of hand once Richard's back is turned.

When Jen threatens to expose their affair if he doesn't do something about them, he decides instead that its easier to silence Jen. But despite suffering terrible injuries, she manages to escape and a dangerous game of cat and mouse ensues accross the desert.

Owing more than just a passing nod to I Spit on Your Grave, though not as explicit, REVENGE is an exceptionally gritty and brutal shocker bound to leave audiences squirming in places. Matilda Lutz, who seems to spend most of the film in a crop-top and thong, whilst bagged down with shotguns and cartridge belts, was certainly very easy on the eye, despite being covered in blood and dirt for the most part.

Only negative thing I would say is that whilst most of the film is in English, much of the dialogue between the 3 male leads is in French. So I found the constant switching between English and French throughout the film somewhat distracting.

Also, many would point out that in reality, the injuries the female lead would have undoubtedly sustained would have prevented her transformation into this "John Rambo" type character she becomes.

But these criticisms aside, I still really enjoyed this and cult movie fans should love it.

REVENGE is released in the UK digitally from September 7th.
