THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE -  on UK BD + DVD on 12th Feb 2018

Sam Dalmas (Tony Musante, We Own the Night), an American writer living in Rome, inadvertently witnesses a brutal attack on a woman (Eva Renzi, Funeral in Berlin) in a modern art gallery. Powerless to help, he grows increasingly obsessed with the incident. Convinced that something he saw that night holds the key to identifying the maniac terrorising Rome, he launches his own investigation parallel to that of the police, heedless of the danger to both himself and his girlfriend Giulia (Suzy Kendall, Spasmo)…

A staggeringly assured debut, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage establishes the key traits that would define Argento’s filmography, including lavish visuals and a flare for wildly inventive, brutal scenes of violence. With sumptuous cinematography by Vittorio Storaro (Apocalypse Now) and a seductive score by legendary composer Ennio Morricone (Once Upon a Time in the West), this landmark film has never looked or sounded better in this new, 4K-restored edition from Arrow Video!

DER TODESKING - on UK Dual format BD + DVD on 26th Feb 2018

The second feature film from German provocateur Jörg Buttgereit, director of Nekromantik and Nekromantik 2, Der Todesking (“The King of Death”) presents seven suicides across seven days of the week.

As a chain letter from the self-proclaimed “Brotherhood of the 7th Day” circulates encouraging its recipients to end their lives, a series of grim murder-suicides unfold. In one vignette, a young woman massacres a room of concert-goers before turning the gun on herself; in another, a man, driven to madness by some unspecified mental disturbance, repeatedly slams his head into a wall before collapsing in a pool of his own blood… These are just some of depictions of death and despair that make up the tortured fabric of Der Todesking.

Regarded by many as director Jörg Buttgereit’s most accomplished work, Der Todesking is an existential masterpiece - a powerfully haunting howl of rage from one of the genre’s most underrated filmmakers.

The Ice Cream Truck arrives on US disc

Writer-director Megan Freels Johnston’s suburban nightmare The Ice Cream Truck is out now on US DVD from Uncork’d Entertainment.

Available from Amazon, the DVD and BD comes complete with outtakes and behind the scenes featurette 'Making Murder'.

The provocative psychological thriller stars Deanna Russo (Being Human, Gossip Girl) as Mary, who moves back to her suburban hometown after her husband gets relocated for work.  As her family ties up loose ends back home, she moves into their new house alone. And although the move makes Mary nostalgic for her youth, there’s something very sinister about that Ice Cream Truck that patrols her suburb.

The Ice Cream Truck also stars Dana Gaier (Despicable Me 3), John Redlinger (Thirst, Banshee), Emil Johnsen (Isolerad), Hilary Barraford (Go For Sisters), Jeff Daniel Phillips (31),  and Lisa Ann Walter (War of the Worlds).

Storytelling is very much in Freels Johnston’s DNA.  The granddaughter of legendary crime writer Elmore Leonard, The Ice Cream Truck screenplay was a semi-finalist in the Circus Road Screenplay competition.

As a producer developing material for over a decade, Freels Johnston worked on adaptations of her grandfather's work and produced Sparks, the directorial debut of Joseph Gordon-Levitt.  After completing a project for the USA Network, she decided to follow her passion and write and direct her own material. Her first film, 2014’s micro budget thriller Rebound, developed a cult following on VOD, was called, “Almost David Lynchian in its strangeness” by Film Threat and Rue Morgue said, the film "(was) worth watching to the end for the unnervingly realistic twist ending."

The Ice Cream Truck is out now on US BD and DVD at Amazon.

Psycho shower scene doc 78/52 slashes its way to DVD on Dec 11

DOGWOOF is excited to announce that the bold, stylish and incisive new documentary 78/52 – the film which pulls back the curtain on one of cinema’s greatest ever scenes – slashes its way onto DVD on 11th December.

In 78 setups and 52 cuts, the deliriously choreographed two-minute shower sequence in Psycho ripped apart cinema’s definition of horror. With a shocking combination of exploitation and high art, Alfred Hitchcock upended his own acclaimed narrative structure by violently killing off a heroine a third of the way through his film, without explanation, justification, or higher purpose. Psycho played out like a horrific prank, forcing audiences to recognize that even the most banal domestic spaces were now fair game for unspeakable mayhem.

With black-and-white film-geek reverence, director Alexandre O. Philippe breaks down this most notorious and essential scene shot for shot, enlisting the help of film buffs and filmmakers alike - including Guillermo del Toro, Bret Easton Ellis, Karyn Kusama, Eli Roth and Peter Bogdanovich. 78/52 examines Janet Leigh’s terrified facial expressions and the blink-and-you-miss-it camera work, not just within the context of the film but also with an eye toward America’s changing social mores - revealing how one bloody, chaotic on-screen death killed off chaste cinema and eerily predicted a decade of unprecedented violence and upheaval.

Argento's CAT OF NINE TAILS - fully restored on BD/DVD from Arrow.

Dario Argento’s devilishly good 1971 horror mystery The Cat O’ Nine Tails starring James Franciscus (City On Fire, Beneath the Planet of the Apes) and Karl Malden (On The Waterfront, TVs Streets of San Francisco), is a brilliantly byzantine thriller that cemented Argento’s reputation as a master genre director.

Following the success of his debut feature, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, distributor Titanus tasked writer/director Dario Argento with delivering a follow-up in short order. The resulting film, granted a greatly enhanced budget and heralded in its US marketing campaign as “nine times more suspenseful” than its predecessor, was The Cat O’ Nine Tails.

This second entry in the so-called “Animal Trilogy” found Argento further refining his distinctive style and cementing his reputation as the master of the giallo thriller. Co-starring Catherine Spaak (Il Sorpasso) and Rada Rassimov (Baron Blood), and featuring another nerve-jangling score by the great Ennio Morricone (The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Good, The Bad and the Ugly), The Cat O’ Nine Tails remains one of Argento’s most suspenseful and underrated films.

Leatherface - Texas Chainsaw Prequel - on UK DVD Jan...

The maniac is unmasked in this gory, nerve-shattering prequel to the legendary classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, exploring the chilling origin of the fearsome horror icon, from the directors of the extreme French masterpiece Inside.

A young nurse is kidnapped by four violent teens after they escape from a psychiatric hospital, and take her on a road trip to hell. Pursued by an equally deranged, trigger-happy lawman out for revenge, one of these teens is destined for tragedy and horrors that will destroy his mind - moulding him into the monster we now know as Leatherface.

The eagerly-awaited home entertainment debut of this slick, sick horror flick will have horror fans drooling with delight.

With a fantastic cast - including genre favourites Stephen Dorff (Blade) and Lili Taylor (The Conjuring), as well as Game of Thrones star Finn Jones - this is a worthy addition to the Chain Saw franchise, and a thrilling examination of the genesis of a monster who is ranked alongside Freddy and Jason as one of the greatest horror characters ever.

Sam Strike (We Still Steal The Old Way), Nicole Andrews (Homefront, The Penthouse), Sam Coleman (Game of Thrones), Alexandre Bustillo, Julien Maury (Directors of Inside, ABCs of Death) also star.

Leatherface releases on EST 18th December 2017, and on DVD 8th January 2018, courtesy of Lionsgate Home Entertainment.
