Special screening of "Lost Soul - Richard Stanley's Dr Moreau" documentary in Notts.

There is to be a special screening of the documentary "LOST SOUL: THE DOOMED JOURNEY OF RICHARD STANLEY'S ISLAND OF DOCTOR MOREAU" at the Broadway Cinema, Nottingham in May.

Charting the famously disastrous attempt by cult filmmaker Richard Stanley (Dust Devil, Hardware) to make the definitive version of the classic HG Wells story, starring a spectacularly destructive Marlon Brando and facing off against an equally destructive tropical storm, mutiny and an angry Hollywood studio. This is the Lost In La Mancha of cult-movie madness.

"Deadly Waters" - A review

“Deadly Waters” marks the feature film directorial debut of Catherine Carpenter and Tyler-James, who shared dual directing duties on the film and they were kind enough to send me a copy to take a look at.

Set at a remote coastal resort (actually Brighton), a young couple head on down to the beach one evening, for a bit of late night rumpy-pumpy and in doing so, break the cardinal sin of having sex in a horror film. As a result, the 2 are subsequently slaughtered mid-coitus, by something mysterious that emerges from the water (and no, it isn’t Ariel the Little Mermaid).

Anyway, a young reporter, Jake (Bruce Langley), has been investigating the deaths to see if there’s anything to tie them to a number of other mysterious disappearances there over the years.

Some of the old folk tell tales about mysterious creatures that live in the waters of their coastal town, but of course, no one takes them seriously. But when Jake finds himself lured to the beach one evening, by the sound of a mysterious, yet enchanting, song and encounters a mysterious girl. He finds that its never wise to ignore the ramblings of the local loony/wise old sage in a horror film.

This marks the start of a series of bizarre encounters and even more bizarre series of deaths in the town and it seems his latest news story might just be the death of him yet!

Filmed on practically a zero budget, the directors make the best of their limited means. The film is competently shot and I liked the concept of the so called ‘monsters’ in the film being Sirens (kind of like Mermaids), who are based on creatures from Greek mythology.

The cast features a lot of first time actors, who make an OK job at delivering their lines and telling the story. But as you would expect, its not quite Royal Shakespear company standards.

I do think the film would have worked better in a more remote location though, like a small Cornish fishing village or something, as opposed to a big tourist resort like Brighton. However, when you’re working with limited means, you have to do the best with what’s available and I think the film makers did a more than respectable job in that respect.

To summarise, I liked the films central premise and feel the film makers did a good job bringing their idea to the screen with the means available. But whether you will like this film will greatly depend on whether you like these ultra low budget indie horrors.

I will say though, that this is certainly the most terrifying movie to be filmed in Brighton since “Carry on Girls” (oh my singular wit) and I look forward to seeing their next movie!

Hellraiser documentary "LEVIATHAN" launches WORLD WIDE

April 13th saw the release of a documentary film fans have been eagerly waiting for.
“Leviathan: The Story of Hellraiser” is the full and complete history of Clive Barker’s classics Hellraiser (1987) and its sequel Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 (1988)

Not only are the two films considered to be true classics of the genre, but they also portray a unique twist on the traditional horror film norms by avoiding the overly frequent cinematic clichés. The films delve deep into what drives human beings and their desires, in a way no other films of their type have ever come close to achieving.

The two part documentary is a six hour fully comprehensive look at the production skills and the creative vision behind one of cinemas classic horror film sagas.

Led by director K. John McDonagh over thirty member of the cast and production team were interviewed during the production of “Leviathan: The Story of Hellraiser”. These interviews uncovered all sorts of secrets and either confirmed or disproved many myths and rumours that have existed around the two films for decades.

Following a successful crowd funding campaign on Kickstarter, which raised in excess of £16,000, the team were even able to head to Los Angeles where they interviewed members of the cast, production team and some of Clive Barker’s nearest and dearest.

“It’s be an amazing adventure, we’ve felt like archaeologists at times, uncovering the history of the production. We’ve discovered things that no one else will have ever known about these films and developed a great insight from the people who made them.” – McDonagh

The DVD is available now and this independent production will meet the demand for the background story created by fans around the world.

You can purchase your copy of this amazing documentary direct from the Leviathan website http://www.leviathan-hellraiser.co.uk/

"What's Left of Us" - UK DVD review.

Set against the backdrop of a zombie apocalypse, comes Argentinian director Christoph Behl’s “What’s Left of Us”, which is released to UK DVD and VOD outlets this May.

Following the exploits of 3 survivors, Ana (Victoria Almeida), her boyfriend Jonathon (William Prociuk) and their friend Axel (Lautaro Delgado). They’ve managed to survive by heavily fortifying their apartment building and scavenging supplies, but the months cooped up together have begun to take their toll.

Tempers are beginning to fray as the trio have little to do but stare at the walls all day. So to alleviate the boredom, Ana begins making a video diary for posterity’s sake. Axel goes overboard with his tattoos and begins to cover himself in them, whilst Jonathon grabs one of the zombies from outside and chains him up in the backroom so they can use him as a punchbag, and well, that’s pretty much it really…

Virtually the entire film takes place inside their apartment, showing them sat around getting on each others nerves, so you don’t actually see anything of the apparent zombie apocalypse outside. Indeed, I don’t think it fair to even call this a zombie film at all, given that the only zombie you really see is the one they’re keeping chained up out back.

If anything, it was like a particularly bad episode of Big Brother, as it’s essentially just 2 hours of watching these people locked in a house, making video diaries and going stir-crazy with boredom and very little else. The apocalyptic scenario outside may as well have been a virus or chemical warfare or something, from what little we see of it.

It doesn’t help that the film is in Argentinian with English subs. Ordinarily, this wouldn’t be a problem, as there are many foreign language films that I have enjoyed. But when the film really isn’t all that entertaining to begin with, it merely adds to the tedium.

Originally filmed under the title “El Desierto” (The Desert), to summarise, I personally did not enjoy this one at all. And to be quite honest, unless you like obscure foreign language art films, I doubt anyone else will either.

Anyway, the film is released to UK DVD and VOD May 11th. Check it out if you feel so inclined.

"Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead" in UK cinemas and on disc

It’s "Mad Max" meets "Dawn of the Dead" as the apocalypse goes down under in the year’s darkest, most hilarious zombie splatter-fest - “Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead” in UK cinemas 8th May and on DVD, Blu-ray and Digital HD 11th May.

A post-apocalyptic zombie invasion turns personal for Aussie mechanic Barry (Jay Gallagher) when a team of sinister gas-masked soldiers abducts his sister Brooke (Bianca Bradey) for a mad scientist’s flesh-eating experiments.

Teaming up with fellow apocalypse survivor Benny (Leon Burchill), Barry must lock and load to battle through the undead and save Brooke!

“Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead” is a blistering feature debut from the brother writing team of Kiah and Tristan Roache-Turner, who have created a world that not only puts original, innovative twists on zombie lore, but also mashes up elements from horror and post-apocalyptic science fiction - all set against a retina-burning Australian landscape, with Mad Max-influenced design and a splattering of inspiration from Peter Jackson’s "Bad Taste" and "Braindead".

It is also a triumph of DIY horror, held together by glue, gaffer tape and a pure love of gore. Produced over four years - and exceeding the brothers’ original budget by $130,000 - the props and costumes were made by Tristan and his friends, while the crew doubled up as zombies.

“Wyrmwood: Road of the Dead” is released to selected UK cinemas 8th May. Then is released to UK DVD, Blu-ray and VOD 11th May.

"Blood" - a short film review

Director Zach Lorkiewicz of Count the Clock productions got in touch to tell us about his latest short film “Blood”, which is waiting for submission to the festival circuit and asked if I’d give it the once over.

The film revolves around a serial killer, played by Dave Belden, who has something of an obsessive compulsive disorder. But even more strangely, has an intense phobia about blood. Even the sight of the slightest drop of it causes him to be violently ill and forces him to scrub everything down with bleach. Not a good disposition for someone who likes murdering people.

But, after claiming his latest victim, he gets a nasty surprise when blood patches start mysteriously appearing in his apartment. Seems supernatural elements are at work and a lot of angry former victims are looking at exacting a ‘bloody’ revenge…

Clocking in at around 10 mins, the director manages to cram a lot of storytelling into that time, whilst allowing the plot to unfold slowly. There’s minimal dialogue, instead relying on visual clues to inform the viewer as to what is going on, and overall, I was quite impressed.

The film should be out on the festival circuit later this year. If you get the chance, I’d recommend checking it out.

"The Town that Dreaded Sundown" - Graham Humpries Artwork.

UK distributor Metrodome has commissioned an exclusive piece of artwork to produce a limited edition print, by acclaimed horror designer Graham Humphreys to celebrate the film's release on 17 April.

Based on a terrifying true story this shrewd remake of the  seventies horror of the same name is inspired by the unsolved 'Moonlight Murders' that took place in the American border town of Texarkana in 1946.

Set in a world where the original film exists and is very much part of the public consciousness, "The Town That Dreaded Sundown" picks up 65 years later, where the quiet streets of Texarkana are once more plagued by a masked maniac who bears a striking resemblance to the same Phantom Killer who wreaked havoc decades earlier. (read my review HERE)

Graham Humphreys is a freelance illustrator and poster designer who has been working within the horror industry for more than thirty years, perhaps best remembered for his iconic artwork for the original UK releases of "The Evil Dead" and "Nightmare On Elm Street" as well as his original artwork for the annual FrightFest horror festival.

Still working in a traditional paint medium, Graham continues to work within the genre he loves. Halloween this year will see the publication of a book of Graham's horror art, entitled 'Graham Humphreys: Drawing Blood'. The launch will be supported by an exhibition at The Proud Gallery, London.

In a move to expand the respected brand nationwide, select FrightFest endorsed films will be made available across the UK and Ireland via IFD’s digital partners (including Sky, iTunes, Amazon, Blinkbox, Film4OD, VirginMovies, TalkTalk, Google, Volta, and Eircom) giving film fans instant access to some of their favourite FrightFest titles. Each release will have the collective backing of IFD and FrightFest across marketing, PR and social channels. The partnership deal was negotiated by Zak Brilliant, Head of Theatrical, and Sophie Wong, TV and Digital Sales Manager, for Icon, and Greg Day and Ian Rattray, Directors of FrightFest.

Paul McEvoy, Co-Director of FrightFest says, “In expanding the FrightFest brand we are opening up new audiences for horror and fantasy, a genre which already has a clear, devoted and almost fanatical fan base. With Icon as our partner and using their distribution channels, we are looking forward to talking to producers and sales companies about how FrightFest can get their films to more film fans.”

Ian Dawson, Icon Film Distribution CEO says, “Icon has always had a strong relationship with the FrightFest team, never more so than over the past 12 months when they, and their supporters, have been an integral part of our launches for The Guest, The Babadook and It Follows. We have long admired their commitment to genre and the loyal community they have built up over the years. This partnership offers a great opportunity to work together behind new and exciting content, taking it to the widest possible audience, making their community a whole lot bigger.”

Since FrightFest was set up 15 years ago, it has grown in size and stature, and today is internationally renowned for discovering exciting and original horror fantasy genre films.   Last August, the festival screened 63 of the best horror films from around the world to UK audiences, with many world and European premieres. Over the years the festival directors, Greg Day, Alan Jones, Paul McEvoy and Ian Rattray, have also brought masters of the genre to the festival including Guillermo del Toro, George Romero, Dario Argento and Sam Raimi. FrightFest has developed into a brand leader for horror film, expanding its footprint in the UK by hosting special strands at other festivals to great success, such as the established three-day event at the Glasgow Film Festival.

IFD has a longstanding track record in releasing genre films, from breakout hit PARANORMAL ACTIVITY which grossed a phenomenal £10 million at the UK box office to the cult vampire thriller 30 DAYS OF NIGHT, as well as re-issues of classic Hammer titles including DRACULA and THE MUMMY.  Most recently, IFD released the critical and box office hit IT FOLLOWS as well as THE BABADOOK, Jennifer Kent’s psychological horror story, which burst out of FrightFest’s August festival to become one of the most talked about horrors of 2014.

Select titles for the joint venture will be announced over the coming weeks.

"Can't Come out to Play" this June!

One of the most chilling and psychologically disturbing tales of the year will demand your full attention when "CAN’T COME OUT TO PLAY" comes to DVD and digital platforms this June.

Feeling nothing but devastation after the loss of her mother and father, teenager Maryann (Natasha Calis - Daydream Nation, The Possession) moves in with her grandparents and is delighted when she befriends Andy (Charlie Tahan - I Am Legend, Blue Jasmine). Andy is in very poor health, and he must stay within his home and carefully follow the instructions of his mother Katherine (Samantha Morton - The Minority Report, John Carter) - who also forbids him from having any visitors. When Katherine's visits are discovered, Andy's father Richard (Michael Shannon - Man of Steel, TV's Boardwalk Empire) is initially fine with the visits but Katherine does not feel the same, and her behaviour grows increasingly erratic.

Also starring Peter Fonda (Easy Rider, Race with the Devil) and directed by the acclaimed auteur John McNaughton (Wild Things, Henry-Portrait of a Serial Killer), "CAN’T COME OUT TO PLAY" is a chilling look at the lengths a mother will go to when protecting her child, even when her motivation for doing so is far from correct....

Experience depraved parenting at its worst when "CAN’T COME OUT TO PLAY" comes to DVD and digital platforms from June 22 from Signature entertainment.

"Suspiria" and "Django" TV series in the works.

According to Variety, French drama producer Atlantique Productions and Italian outfit Cattleya are busy adapting Dario Argento's "Suspiria" and Sergio Corbucci’s "Django" for the small screen.

"Suspiria", or "Suspiria De Profundis" to give the series its full title, is inspired by the 19th century book of the same name by English writer Thomas De Quincey’s, which was made into the classic Italian horror film "Suspiria" in 1977 by Dario Argento, who will serve as the series’ artistic supervisor.

The series will be an English-language period horror, in which author De Quincey is the lead character. Styled as a new Sherlock Holmes, the story will explore psychological fantasies of evil and attempt to solve fearful mysteries. It will be set in London and Rome at the turn of the 20th century.

The "Django" series will be a re-imagining of the cult 1966 Western. Atlantique Productions acquired the rights to develop and produce an English-language television series based on Sergio Corbucci’s iconic Western.

The film, which made a star out of Franco Nero, was the story of a coffin-dragging gunslinger’s feud with a bandit chief. It has spawned numerous sequels, spin-offs and unofficial rip-offs and homages, most notably Quentin Tarantino’s 2012 blockbuster Django Unchained.
Atlantique Productions secured a similar alliance with Keshet UK last summer to develop "Crater Lake", created by screenwriter, author, journalist and TV executive Ron Leshem.

Both Django and Suspiria De Profundis will be 12 x 50 mins series with an ambition for multiple seasons.

Can you help Krampus The Devil Return?

The people behind the 2013 film "Krampus : The Christmas Devil" are working on a sequel and are looking to fans of the original to help get it off the ground.

In "Krampus: The Devil Returns", Snowdog Studios are looking to bring Krampus back to continue punishing children who've made the naughty list for Christmas. But Jeremy, your favourite character from the original, will be back on the case. After having been kidnapped by Krampus and escaping even as his entire family "disappeared", he's helping the authorities bring Krampus' reign of holiday terror to an end.

After the first Krampus movie, Snowdog Studios realized what an amazing group of fans they had and want them to be a bigger part of the whole process from start to finish this time around.

The big studios won't financially back the movie they want to make and the movie you want them to make. That's where you come in.

More details on how to get involved and the list of rewards available for the various levels of donations can be found at the Fanbacked Krampus Page
