DON’T LET HIM IN (2011) - Sat Apr 20 @ 22:55 (UK Premiere)
What happens if you invite a serial killer on holiday? This nerve-bludgeoning horror thriller, directed by UK first-timer Kelly Smith, follows the brutal story of two couples spending a weekend in the country, only to discover they are in the company of a vicious killer dubbed ‘The Tree Surgeon’. The cast includes Sophie Linfield (FOOTBALL FACTORY) and Gordon Alexander (SUCKER PUNCH).

ELEVATOR (2011) – Sat Apr 27 @ 22.55 (UK Premiere)

Evil Dead 2 - UK Special Edition BD review

With the new “Evil Dead” remake just around the corner, StudioCanal have re-issued Sam Raimi’s sequel to the original cult classic “Evil Dead 2 : Dead by Dawn” to Blu-Ray in a brand new special edition release.

Now, I’m sure we’re all familiar with the plot, but just to re-cap. The sole survivor of the original Evil Dead, Ash (Bruce Campbell – TVs Burn Notice) goes back to the cabin in the woods and ends up doing battle with more zombies and evil spirits, after they’re awakened by the incantations in some old book.

Exceptionally gory, and hilariously funny, the film boasts plenty of blood and guts, as Ash is forced to fend off the undead with chainsaws and shotguns in a series of slapstick battles.

A hilarious cult classic, that’s even more enjoyable than the first. This new special edition Blu-Ray boasts a whole stack of new features, not seen on any previous UK release. These include…

"Swallowed souls : Making Evil Dead 2", a 7 part 98 minute retrospective documentary featuring interviews with the cast and crew, including Bruce Campbel, Scott Spiegel , Robert Kurzman, Greg Nicotero, Howard Berger, Ted Raimi, Sarah Berri (Anne), Richard Domeier (Ed) and Danny Hicks (Jake).

"Road to Wadesboro", in which propmaster Tony Elwood takes us round several of the filming locations used in the movie, including the old schoolhouse where they built the interior sets, and the woods where they built the old cabin, showing whats left of the old building today.

"Cabin fever", half an hour of behind the scenes footage and deleted scenes and there's also 4x "Photo galleries", featuring ads, memoribillia and behind the scenes photos.

Also included from previous releases are…

“The Gore the Merrier – Making of Evil Dead 2”, the 31 minute making of documentary that accompanied previous releases

"Behind the Screams", which is essentially a photo gallery of behind the scenes stills, narrated by crew member Tom Sulivan, (note, this is not the same feature that was on the old US Laserdisc, which was a bunch of effects test footage. Most of this can be found in other features on the disc though).

Lastly you get the "Theatrical trailer" and a feature length "Audio commentary track" that accompanies the main feature, with Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell, Scott Spiegel, Greg Nicotero, which is the same one from previous releases, originally recorded for the old laserdisc.

The "Evil Dead 2" special edition is released to UK Blu-Ray April 15th from Studio Canal.

Horror author James Herbert dies.

We're sad to report that noted horror author James Herbert died earlier this week, aged 69. The Guardian newspaper have printed the following obitury...

James Herbert, one of the UK's most popular novelists and writer of bestselling horror books including The Rats, The Fog and The Survivor, has died at his home in Sussex aged 69.

His publisher, Pan Macmillan, said Herbert, author of 23 novels published in 34 languages that sold more than 54m copies worldwide, died peacefully in his bed.

Tributes were led by Jeremy Trevathan, his editor for 10 years. He said: "Jim Herbert was one of the keystone authors in a genre that had its heyday in the 1970s and 1980s. It's a true testament to his writing and his enduring creativity that his books continued to be huge bestsellers right up until his death. He has the rare distinction that his novels were considered classics of the genre within his lifetime. His death marks the passing of one of the giants of popular fiction in the 20th century."

Novelist James Smythe, who writes about horror fiction for the Guardian, said: "James Herbert was one of the first adult writers – in both senses of the term – that I ever read. When I stopped reading my gateway teenage books and moved on to my dad's horror novels, he was one of the big three: him, Stephen King and Dean Koontz.

"He was the weirdest, the nastiest. The Fog and The Rats terrified me; Creed was spoken about in my school in almost mythological ways, being both horrifying and introducing us to sexual concepts we'd never contemplated before that point; and The Magic Cottage, when given to me aged 13 by an amazing English teacher, was one of the books that made me want to become a writer.

"The early books still retain an amazing power over me to this day, showing his skill as one of the greats of the horror fiction genre."

Herbert was born in London in 1943, the youngest son of East End market traders, and got his first work in advertising, becoming art director and head of the agency he joined.

At the age of 28 he began writing his first novel, a terrifying story of London being overrun by mutant, flesh-eating rats. When The Rats was finally published in 1974, the first print run of 100,000 copies sold out in three weeks.

The pattern was to be repeated time and again: he scared the living daylights out of readers with books such as The Dark, The Magic Cottage, Haunted and Creed.

Four of his novels – The Rats, The Survivor, Fluke and Haunted – were made into films while one of his later works, The Secret of Crickley Hall, became a three-part supernatural thriller for the BBC last year.

The paperback of his 23rd novel, Ash, was published last week.

In an interview last year Herbert said: "I hate violence and I didn't plan to write horror; it just poured out of me. The great thing is that you can write humour, romance or political thrillers under that genre."

Herbert, awarded an OBE in 2010, is survived by his wife, Eileen, and their three daughters.

RIP James, you will be sadly missed!

Knightriders comes to UK disc this April

Arrow Video are pleased to announce that George A. Romero’s landmark non-horror offering “Knightriders” will make its UK DVD & Worldwide Blu-ray debuts when released on Monday 22nd April 2013.

Made immediately after the zombie classic “Dawn of the Dead”, “Knightriders” depicts a troupe of travelling medieval entertainers, who ride around on Motorcycles, rather than horses, trying to live their lives according to the ideals of King Arthur – No easy feat in Reagan’s America, where the outside world and its financial realities constantly encroach on their dreams.

With the self-adopted title of “King William”, the group’s leader Billy (played by a young Ed Harris in his first leading role) becomes gradually more unstable, as he blurs the lines between the medieval knight his act portrays, and the realities of everyday life in the 20th century.

With a memorably eccentric cast of characters (including make-up effects genius Tom Savini in a major role, and a cameo from novelist Stephen King) and a complex, nuanced script, “Knightriders” is Romero’s warmest and most personal film to date.

Specially restored by Arrow’s acclaimed team of experts, the deluxe editions of “Knightriders” include both DVD and Blu-ray copies of the film along with a host of special features and collector’s items, listed as follows...

- High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentations.
- Uncompressed original Mono 2.0 PCM audio.
- Optional English SDH subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing.
- Audio commentary with George Romero, Tom Savini, John Amplas and Christine Romero.
- ‘The Genesis of a Legend’ – Star Ed Harris remembers his first leading role.
- ‘A Date with Destiny’ – Co-star Tom Savini reflects on the film.
- ‘Medieval Maiden’ – Interview with actress Patricia Tallman.
- Theatrical Trailer.
- TV Spots.
- Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Nat Marsh.
- Collector’s booklet featuring brand new writing on the film by author and critic Brad Stevens, an archival interview with Romero, and a new interview with composer Donald Rubinstein, illustrated with original archive stills and posters.

The Bay comes to UK disc March 18.

If you missed the advance screenings of Barry Levinson's ecological horror "The Bay" at UK cinemas recently, fear not. The film is released to UK DVD and Blu-Ray on Monday the 18th of March by Momentum Pictures.

The plot takes place in the seaside town of Chesapeake Bay, Maryland. A town that relies heavily on the dockside tourism it brings to the community. When two biological researchers find a staggering level of toxicity in the water they attempt to alert the mayor. But he refuses to raise the alarm in fear of creating a panic among the citizens of the docile town.

As a result, a deadly plague is unleashed, turning the people of Chesapeake Bay into hosts for a mutant breed of parasites. Taking control of their minds, and eventually their bodies, the parasites soon cause the town to descend in absolute terror as they quickly realise the harrowing reality they are faced with.

Deadly Blessing - UK Blu-Ray review

"Deadly Blessing", one of Wes Craven’s earlier and lesser known horrors,  is the latest film to be given the special edition treatment from Arrow films and they were kind enough to furnish me with a Blu-Ray copy to review. So having recently invested in an external BD-Rom drive for my laptop, decided to give it a whirl.

The film primarily revolves around a young farming couple, Martha (played by Battlestar Gallactica’s Maren Jensen) and her husband Jim (Douglass Barr, who you’ll probably recognise from TVs “The Fall Guy”). Martha met Jim in college whilst in LA and now lives with him on his farm.

But it seems all is not well in rural America, Jim used to belong to an Amish sect known as the Hittite, who resent him for turning his back on them and their “traditional” ways, as well as using modern agricultural machinery on his property, which is right next door to theirs. So when Jim is killed under mysterious circumstances, suspicion immediately falls upon them, in particular their leader, Isiaah (as played by movie veteran Ernest Borgnine).

Following the funeral, a couple of Martha’s friends (played by a young Sharon Stone, in one of her first screen roles, and that girl who played ‘Patty’ in “Grease”), drive out to visit her, which causes a bit of a stir amongst some of the younger Hittite men. But soon after their arrival, they suspect that Jim’s death was no accident as members of the Hittite start dieing under mysterious circumstances too. As the bodies pile up and accusations fly, they soon realise there’s a killer in their midst.

Featuring an interesting mix of cast, which also includes horror veteran Michael Berryman, who had previously collaborated with Wes Craven on “The Hills Have Eyes”, whilst "Deadly Blessing" may not be quite as entertaining as his later “Nightmare on Elm Street” or “Scream” movies, this is still an interesting slasher type movie that fans of his later works will want to check out. Indeed, sharper eyed viewers will be quick to spot several key scenes which Craven copied for his later Elm Street films. Though I wasn’t sure about the twist ending (which I won’t spoil) when the film suddenly goes from being a slasher movie to a supernatural one, but you’ll have to view it for yourself to see what I mean.

Extras wise, the disc contains a nice set of special features including a special introduction by Michael Berryman, a feature length audio commentary track with director Wes Craven. You also get 3x interview features, “The Deadliest Director” in which Wes Craven discusses how the film came about. “Craven Images” in which Michael Berryman discusses how he got into showbusiness and his earlier films and the films he did with Wes and Deadly Desires which features screenwriter Glenn Benest discussing his involvement in the project.

Also included is the original theatrical trailer and, if you click around on the main and special feature menus, there’s a couple of eater eggs in which Michael Berryman discusses a couple of recent horror films he’s made and Glen Benest shares his thoughts on the poster artwork for the film.

A nice set of extras for, what could best be described as, one of Wes Craven’s more obscurer movies. The film is being released to UK video shelves in a Blu Ray and DVD combo pack on March 25th.

Maniac - Q&A with Elijah Wood

To coincide with the release of Alexandra Aja's "Maniac" to UK cinemas this weekend, a little Q&A with Elijah Wood....

Q: Can you sum up what this film is about?

A: It’s about a psychotic named Frank who runs and operates a mannequin store that had previously been owned by his mother. We get some idea that he was abused and had a very complicated relationship with his mother. This is manifested in some kind of madness which has led him to kill women and scalp them. He has fantasies with these women that are kind of emblematic of his relationship with his mother and potentially of the relationship that he’d love to have with women but that he doesn’t have. So it’s a journey that we literally take through the character’s eyes.

As he goes on this rampage of killing women, he ultimately falls in love with this woman named Anna who visits his shop and who’s an artist. He seems to connect with her in a way that he doesn’t with other women. So Anna almost becomes a potential redemption for him – we see a side of Frank that is more human and that has the capacity for compassion and love.

Q: How much of a genre film is MANIAC exactly?

It’s a genre film but there’s much more to it, because the tone of the film is uncomfortable. I think we feel that we sat in the mind of the killer and that we exist in the headspace of this individual during the length of the movie. What we’re driven to do is take part in the killings, and that is uncomfortable and disturbing.

Q: What drew you to making MANIAC?

A: A lot of why I was interested in being a part of the film was the fact that it was taking the original idea of the movie and transposing it into this POV perspective. And I was just so intrigued, as you’d largely be experiencing this character subjectively. You’d only really be seeing him in these reflections [in mirrors]. For me, that was just so intriguing.

Q: Let’s talk about the POV process.  Were you physically always present on set?

A: I’ve been around all the time except for two days. I’ve never worked so closely with the DOP and the camera operator before, and the cinematography has never been so important to me – because what Maxime [the cinematographer] was doing was what Frank was doing. I also had a counterpart who could “be” my left or my right hand because I couldn’t always use both hands in a natural way, depending on where the camera was. So we literally held things together and handed things off as if it were the same person. It was a lot of choreography!

Q: Never before have you probably made a film where your hands have been so vital, if that makes any sense…

A: Yeah, totally. And we actually had a double. Most of the time I couldn’t get both of my hands on either side of the camera, because the rig was too big. So there’d be times when I’d be on one side with my right hand, and then my double would be on the left side with his left hand, so we’d have to work together a lot, like moving an object from one hand to another. And if you’re trying to do that with two different hands, it’s pretty challenging to make that look pretty natural.

Q: His hands are also constantly bruised and battered, and he’s often washing them. You see the scars of his killings…

A: Yeah. Some of the thinking too behind the scars on his hands…it was almost like a self-flogging activity that he would take part in. He would scrub his hands with this steel wool almost as a punishment for what he was doing. It’s kind of an indication of the internal conflict that he’s going through. He knows he’s doing these horrible things, and he doesn’t want to do these things. He articulates that a couple of times in the movie. So this idea that his hands would be bloody and scarred really came from this idea that he was torturing himself in a way, for the things that he’s been doing.

Q: How much did you delve into Frank’s psychology? Is he a schizophrenic?

A: I suppose he is a bit schizophrenic. He’s a man in conflict. He has no social skills. He has no ability to connect with the outside world, and yet he deeply yearns to connect. And that’s just something that I understood immediately. A lot of the real character work for me actually occurred after we shot the movie. I knew that was going to happen. So much of the shooting of the film was technical, outside of the very specific character moments that were reflection shots. So the rest of the film, I knew that the character had to come alive when you didn’t see him. So most of that was done in the ADR [Additional Dialogue Recording] stage in post-production; I felt the character was kind of created there, for the most part.

Q: Was the original movie helpful in any way to you?

A: Not really. I hadn’t seen it until we started shooting, and I certainly wasn’t looking to that film as inspiration, because I knew we were doing something so different. And the characterisation was quite different. But also I didn’t really want to try and do what Joe Spinell had done. He had created a very visceral and intriguing character – his performance is pretty remarkable in that movie. And it was never my intention to try and use that as inspiration. But I did love the movie. It’s a pretty incredible, gritty character study. There’s actually a sequence in the original movie that I’d hoped we could shoot, and it was apparently in an early draft. He shoots Tom Savini in the car with a shotgun – it’s a pretty intense scene! And it would’ve been quite cool to shoot that in our movie, but I don’t think there was really much of a place for it.

Q: You obviously have a love of horror movies. Did you grow up watching them?

A: The first horror movies that I saw were when I was five or six – and I’ve loved the genre ever since. It all started with seeing movies that I wasn’t supposed to be seeing that my brother would rent with his friends, that I would get to see unbeknownst to my parents! And it made an impression on me, and I’ve loved the genre ever since.

Q: Can you say why horror has had such a renaissance over the last decade?

A: It feels like there are a lot of people taking it seriously now. I think Insidious is a good example, and a movie like Let The Right One In. Typically, a foreign horror movie would not really get legs in the US, or find an audience – primarily because it’s not in the English language. And that movie was really successful here. So great genre cinema is being made worldwide, and it seems to be inspiring people here to make similarly high quality horror films as well, which is the kind of thing we want to be doing.

Q: How was it working with Franck Khalfoun?

A: Franck is hilarious! He’s incredibly passionate and he has a sensitivity that I love. His appreciation for the hard work everyone has put into the project is wonderful.

Q: Can you tell me about Alexandre Aja?

A: He’s just great. I’ve been a fan of his work for a while – ever since I saw HIGH TENSION.  So I felt this project was in good hands. It was wonderful having him on set – he came up with great ideas and he has an eye for this kind of storytelling. Sometimes, he’ll have the most subtle, simple idea that’ll make all the difference. I also loved the collaboration between him and Frank. They understand and appreciate each other.

Maniac is in cinemas NOW!

Can he survive to ride another day……….

Starring as Baz is actor/comedian Kevin Bishop alongside a strong supporting cast which includes highly popular star of stage and screen Frances Barber as his domineering mother and up-and-coming actress Hayley-Marie Axe, as his police partner.

Is the dark figure she sees escaping with David really The Tall Man?  If so, who is he and where does he take the children? And why do some of the town folk seem to know more than they are prepared to say...

Also starring William B. Davis (The X-Files) and directed by Pascal Laugier (Martyrs), THE TALL MAN (nothing to do with the character from the Phantasm films) is packed with plot twists and nail-biting tension, blurring the boundaries between horror and thriller like never before.

The Tall Man hits UK video shelves on DVD and Blu-Ray March 11th from Koch Media.

John Boorman season at the BFI London.

From the end of March and throughout April, the British Film Institute's Southbank theatre in London will be screening a season films by legendary film maker "John Boorman".

Not an easy director to categorise, he has produced many diverse works over the years, ranging from horror, to crime, war and science fiction and the BFI will be screening a broad spectrum of his works, including the Hill-Billy horror "Deliverence", notorious horror sequal "Exorcist 2 : The Heretic" and the offbeat Sci-Fi film "Zardoz" (yes, the one with a pony tailed Sean Connery dressed only in red underpants and leather boots).

Of course, if none of those appeal to you, many of his other films are being screened over the month, including classic sword and sorcery tale "Excalibur" and the action-adventure film "Emerald Forest".

The BFI's John Boorman season runs Mar 25 - Apr 25. Full details of these and other films in the season can be found on the BFI website at...https://whatson.bfi.org.uk/Online/john-boorman

Lake Placid : The Final Chapter - Snapping onto DVD this March!!!

Horror icon Robert Englund (Nightmare on Elm Street franchise), Yancy Butler (Kick Ass) and Elisabeth Röhm (TV’s “Heroes”) battle the most blood-thirsty, monster crocodiles on earth in the final installment of the Lake Placid franchise. LAKE PLACID: THE FINAL CHAPTER this March.

The crocs are back... and they're bigger, badder and more brutal than ever. After the deadly predators' last vicious attack, the government prevented their extermination. Sealed away in a nature preserve, they've been growing to record size, awaiting their next chance to feast on human flesh. Now, when a high school swim team takes a wrong turn directly into the crocs hunting grounds... dinner is served.

As the teens race to avoid the hungry reptiles, they become caught in a showdown between a rogue game warden (Yancy Butler, reprising her role from Lake Placid 3) and a demented poacher (Robert Englund). It's the last serving of hysterical horror in a finale that shows terror is best served raw.

LAKE PLACID: THE FINAL CHAPTER was directed by Don Michael Paul from a screenplay by David Reed. Jeffrey Beach and Phillip J. Roth produced, with Cherise Honey acting as executive producer.

The film hits UK DVD March 25th from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
