Director Anthony Bushman’s feature debut, PSYCHOPOMP, is a grounded sci-fi, apocalyptic, psychological thriller making its rounds on the festival circuit. But it’s a minor miracle this film was ever created, much less completed.
Creative partners Bushman and Brian K. Millard pivoted to this story after what was supposed to be their first feature got postponed due to Covid a mere 36 hours before production was scheduled to begin. Inspired by what they were seeing in the real world, themes of fear, trust in science, and isolation found their way into the story.
As roommates quarantined in their bubble, the filmmaking duo did everything behind the camera, as well as stepping in front of the lens – and out of their comfort zone – to portray two of the leads. Other roles were cast with talented actor friends and filmed entirely over Zoom. Co-writer/director Bushman said, “I’m forever grateful for our cast who brought such emotional depth to their roles, all the while confined to a tiny box on a computer screen.”
All the effort was almost undone, however. Brian K. Millard died tragically while the film was in Post. After mourning his friend, Bushman felt the importance of finishing what they started. He remarked, “I’m heartbroken Brian will never get to see our film completed, but I think he’d be proud of the work we did.”
Their film is now receiving attention on the festival circuit. It had its World Premiere in November at Orlando Film Festival, where it received nominations for Best Picture and Best Cinematography, and also screened at the iconic New York City Horror Film Festival.
PSYCHOPOMP will screen at Romford Horror Festival on Friday, February 28 at 2:00pm. For more information and tickets, visit https://www.romfordhorrorfestival.com/Friday-28th-February.
