Bobcat Goldthwaite is up "Willow Creek" (and without a paddle)!

Kaleidoscope Entertainment is pleased to announce the UK release of the nerve-wracking horror WILLOW CREEK which will be released in cinemas this May.

Directed by celebrated film-maker Bobcat Goldthwait (God Bless America, World’s Greatest Dad, Sleeping Dogs) [he also played Mr Zed in those "Police Academy" films] . Jim (Bryce Johnson - Pretty Little Liars) and his girlfriend Kelly (Alexie Gilmore – Definitely, Maybe) are visiting the infamous Willow Creek, the alleged home of the original Bigfoot legend – the tale of huge ape like creatures that roam the forests of North America. It was there that in 1967, the legendary beast was captured on film and has terrified and mystified generations since.

Keen to explore more than 50 years of truth, folklore, misidentifications and hoaxes, Kelly goes along for the ride to keep Jim happy, whilst Jim is determined to prove the story is real by capturing the beast on camera.

But, deep in the dark and silent woods, isolated and hours from human contact, neither Kelly nor Jim are prepared for what is hidden between the trees, and what happens when the cameras start rolling…

WILLOW CREEK was well received at several festivals last year including Fantasia, Sitges and Frightfest, where it was named as the winner of Total Film’s Best Scare. The film is released to UK cinemas May 2nd and on DVD from May 26th.

"Sisters" (1973) - UK DVD/BD review

Brian DePalmas 1973 cult film “Sisters” (AKA Blood Sisters) is another one of the director’s earlier movies, which Arrow films have just added to their catalogue of special edition releases.

Set in New York, the film stars a pre-Superman Margot Kidder as Danielle Breton. Recently divorced, she meets a new love interest (played by Lisle Wilson of “The Incredible Melting Man” fame), who quickly deals with her stalking ex-husband, and they end up going back to her apartment for the evening.

However, it turns out that Danielle has a somewhat unbalanced sister, Dominique (Margot Kidder again in a dual role) and when he wakes the next morning, is brutally murdered by her.

The incident is witnessed by a woman living in the apartment across the road, journalist Grace Collier (Jennifer Salt, who’s probably best known these days as the producer of “American Horror Story”). But unfortunately, due to her somewhat inflammatory articles in the press about police brutality and corruption, the authorities don’t believe her.

When the police finally do check Dominique’s apartment, they find no trace of the body and suspect that Grace is trying to waste their time. But knowing what she saw was real, Grace begins to dig into Dominique’s private life, where she makes a shocking discovery about her "sister" and her supposed “ex” husband…

Also featuring Charles Durning (Dark Night of the Scarecrow) and DePalma regular William Finney (Phantom of Paradise) the film was heavily influenced by Alfred Hitchcock’s “Rear Window” and was DePalma’s first foray into the horror genre (not counting his earlier comedy “Murder à la Mod” of course).

Fans of DePalma’s other films will definitely want pick this one up as it’s been extensively restored and is undoubtedly the best it has ever looked on disc and comes packed with the usual slew of special features that we’ve come to expect from Arrow.

First up is the feature “What the Devil Hath Joined Togethor”, which is a 45 minute retrospective “making of” feature, presented by journalist Justin Humprheys.

Next there’s a series of all new interviews with Actress Jennifer Salt and crew members Louise Rose (co-writer), Paul Hirsch (Editor) and Jeffrey Hayes (unit manager) which each run about 10-15 mins long, in which they share various anecdotes about their time on set. Which also includes is an audio interview with the late William Finley, who plays Danielle’s ex in this.

The DePalma Digest, a 30 minute feature by critic and author Mike Sutton, which looks over the films of DePalmas lengthy career.

Also included is a promotional art gallery, showing the many posters used to promote the film and lastly there’s the original theatrical trailer.

The case also contains a collectors booklet, featuring linear notes on the film by author Kier-La Janisse and DePlama’s 1973 article about working with composer Bernard Hermann, which was first published in Variety magazine and the sleeve features reversible artwork. Giving you a choice of displaying the original poster art, or newly commissioned artwork by Graham Humphreys.

The film is released on a dual format DVD/BD combo pack.

If you haven’t see this film, or are a fan of DePalma’s other works, this release by Arrow comes highly recommended.

"Blood Lake: Attack of the Killer Lampreys" coming to Animal Planet (US).

Looking to get in on the campy "Sharknado" phenomenon, Animal Planet has set its own horror film from The Asylum -- the same people behind "Sharknado" -- called "Blood Lake: Attack of the Killer Lampreys", set to premiere in the US this Memorial Day weekend.

The two-hour scripted movie stars Shannen Doherty ("Beverly Hills, 90210"), Christopher Lloyd ("Back to the Future") and Jason Brooks ("Days of Our Lives"), and is directed by James Cullen Bressack ("Pernicious"). Doherty and company battle lampreys -- eel-like fish with huge teeth and funnel-shaped mouths -- after they slide their way into the city's sewer system and start terrorizing the residents of a small Michigan town.

Brooks plays Michael, a fish and wildlife expert who moves to the town with his wife, Cate (Doherty), after being summoned by the town mayor, Akerman (Lloyd), to help deal with its attacking fish problem. ("River Monsters" star Jeremy Wade also makes a cameo.)

But with these blood-suckers on the loose, the town's residents quickly learn that a casual dip in the pool or routine trip to the toilet can turn deadly as the lampreys hunt for their next victim.

"Blood Lake" will premiere on Sunday, May 25 at 9 p.m. as part of the US network's third annual "Monster Week" (actually nine days long) programming block.

Other Monster Week specials include "Man-Eating Zombie Cats" -- about big cats with a thirst for human blood -- and a quest to find a giant crocodile tormenting a village in "Nature's Most Wanted."

(Why don't Animal Planet in the UK show this stuff???)

"Orca - The Killer Whale" UK DVD review

The movie that put the word Killer into Killer Whale, “Orca”, is being re-released to DVD this month from StudioCanal, who were kind enough to send over a check disc for me to take a look at.

One of  many films from the late 70s about nature-on-the-rampage, that came out in the wake of “Jaws”, “Orca - The Killer Whale” stars a pre-Dumbledore Richard Harris ("The Wild Geese", "A Man Called Horse" and of course “Harry Potter”) as Nolan, a boat captain, whos crew earn their living by trapping sharks and selling them to aquariums.

When they discover that they could earn a small fortune from selling a killer whale, and despite the warnings from the local marine expert, Rachael Bedford (Charlotte Rampling – "Henry VIII"), they devise a plan to capture one of the two whales that have been spotted swimming in the bay they fish in.

Unfortunately, their plans go predictably awry and they accidentally end up harpooning the female Whale, which subsequently dies. The crews boat is then attacked and damaged by the Whale's vengeful partner and they are forced to put into port for repairs.

But when Nolan decides to stay in the town for a few weeks and not leave, the Whale goes on to attack the other boats in the harbour and his crew find themselves being run out of town by the superstitious locals (one of which being the Red Indian guy from “Poltergeist 2”) where they are forced back out to sea and into a final confrontation with the deadly beast.

Directed by Michael Anderson, whos other notable credits include “Logan’s Run” and “The Martian Chronicles” (and interestingly, classic war film “The Dam Busters”) and featuring a notable international cast, including Richard Harris, Charlote Rampling, Bo Derek (10) and Robert Caradine ("The Big Red One", "Django Unchained"). "Orca" is a rather silly film, which kind of plays out like an inverse “Moby Dick”, in which the whale is seeking vengeance on the boat captain, rather than the other way round.

Of course that doesn’t mean it isn’t any less enjoyable, which also features an effective soundtrack from veteran composer Ennio Morricone and I would defy anyone not to be disturbed by the scenes of the female whale being harpooned. So if you rather like these post “Jaws” animal disaster films, or maybe you’re just curious to see the sort of movies Richard Harris appeared in before doing Harry Potter, you might want to pick this one up.

Sadly this release from Studio Canal is a vanilla disc, without any special features. A trailer or two at the very least would have been a nice addition (indeed, the previous release from Momentum contained a trailer). But alas, Studio Canal have decided to release it bare bones. So until a special edition comes along, this release will have to suffice.

Arrow to release Brian DePalma's "Sisters" onto BD/DVD

Arrow Video is delighted to announce the latest addition to its roster of Brian De Palma movies with the release of "Sisters", arguably the first true Brain De Palma suspense thriller, which is being released in a dual format DVD/Blu-Ray combo pack.

Following the recent release of "The Fury" and the truly one-of-a-kind "Phantom of the Paradise", "Sisters" has been treated to an all-new restoration that hopes to bring an all-new interest in one of De Palma’s greatest early works.

Before 1973, Brian De Palma was impossible to pigeonhole: he made comedies, political satires and openly experimental pieces. But with "Sisters" (originally released as "Blood Sisters" in the UK) he turned to the suspense thriller and discovered his natural home – and a style that would lead directly to later masterpieces like "Carrie", "Dressed to Kill" and "Blow Out".

When Danielle (Margot Kidder) meets potential boyfriend Philip (Lisle Wilson) after appearing on the TV show Peeping Toms (a nod to the Michael Powell shocker), she invites him home, only to attract the ire of her twin sister Dominique. From across the courtyard, Rear Window-style, reporter Grace (Jennifer Salt) witnesses Philip being murdered by one of the twins – but the police find no body or any physical evidence. Naturally, Grace takes things into her own hands, and discovers more about the sisters’ relationship than she bargained for…

Strongly influenced by Alfred Hitchcock and Roman Polanski, and with a score by the great Bernard Herrmann (Citizen Kane, Psycho), Sisters was the first true “Brian De Palma” film.

Complementing this dual-format Blu-ray and DVD edition are a host of brand new extras, which are as follows...

· High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentation
· Original Mono audio (uncompressed PCM on the Blu-ray)
· What the Devil Hath Joined Together: Brian De Palma’s Sisters – A visual essay by author Justin Humphreys (47 mins)
· All new interviews with co-writer Louisa Rose, actress Jennifer Salt, editor Paul Hirsch and unit manager Jeffrey Hayes
· The De Palma Digest – a film-by-film guide to the director’s career by critic Mike Sutton
· Archive audio interview with star William Finley (excerpt)
· Gallery of Sisters promotional material from around the world
· Theatrical trailer
· Reversible sleeve featuring original and newly commissioned artwork by Graham Humphreys
· Illustrated collector's booklet featuring new writing on the film by author Kier-La Janisse (House of Psychotic Women), Brian De Palma’s original 1973 Village Voice essay on working with composer Bernard Herrmann as well as a contemporary interview with De Palma on making Sisters, and the 1966 Life magazine article that inspired the film.

INTERVIEW with BO KEISTER, star of HOUSE OF GOOD AND EVIL

Creepy horror-thriller House of Good and Evil was released to DVD in the US earlier this week. We caught up with one of the film's actors, Bo Keister.

How did you get the gig?

Blu de Golyer, who wrote and produced the film, was in the area scouting locations. At the time, I had an acting studio one town over.

Someone mentioned to him that I may have access to resources, so he gave me a call and asked me to lend a hand. Fortunately, there were a couple of roles still open and I ended up getting cast as “Sheriff Hanituski”.

What movies would you compare House of Good and Evil to?

It’s really kind of a throwback to the horror style of the 70’s. Even though it’s not a ghost story, or really even a “horror” film (since it’s much more a psychological thriller), I’d have to say it reminds me of “Amityville”. I say that primarily because the house itself plays such a significant role in the film. It’s its own character really.

Where about did the movie film and how long of a shoot was it?

We shot in Floyd, VA, which is very rural and couldn’t be a more perfect setting. Not to mention that the community really rallied around the film. So many people stepped up to lend a hand, and continue to help to this day. We were amazed at the support.
The shoot itself was just a little over 20 days total, but like many other indie films, it was years in the making.

How did you like working with the director?

David Mun is fantastic, and his vision for the film really works. In fact, we’re already on to new projects together. He & I, along with Blu, created Hillbilly Horror Show, which is kind of a mash-up of Hee Haw and Tales From the Crypt.

It’s a great show that features horror shorts from around the globe. People can check it out now through Vimeo On Demand, but it will be coming to Roku around June of this year. We’re pretty excited.

Do you have a favourite moment in the movie?

I do.

There’s a scene where Maggie is in the kitchen, refinishing cabinets, and the phone, which isn’t supposed to exist, begins ringing next door.  You can see the anger just wash over her. Rachel’s reactions in that scene are simply priceless!

Do you know if the DVD features any extra features? Did you participate in any?

Not on this version. The plan is to eventually release a Director’s Cut with all the cool behind-the-scenes goodies.

I’m sure I’ll show up in there somewhere.

How much does a film like this rely on the online horror community to help get the word out?

To put it bluntly, it’s everything! Grassroots, “word of mouth”, campaigns are absolutely paramount to the success of a film like this one. Without that support, you’re really going nowhere. We couldn’t be more grateful for the support we’ve been given and continue to receive.
