THE MUMMY and FRANKENSTEIN AND THE MONSTER FROM HELL, starring British acting royalty, the legendary Peter Cushing in both films and other acting greats including Christopher Lee and Patrick Troughton arrive on Limited Edition Box sets next Monday courtesy of Second Sight Films.

Terrance Fisher’s acclaimed, seminal horror THE MUMMY (1958) starring screen icon Peter Cushing (Star Wars, The Curse of Frankenstein, The Hound of The Baskervilles) has been unearthed from its tomb, and now the spellbinding horror cult classic is set for the Limited Edition treatment on Blu-ray, with a vast array of special features courtesy of Second Sight Films on 29 August 2022.

Cushing gives a haunting turn as an Egyptologist who discovers an ancient tomb and inadvertently unleashes the vengeful mummy of an Egyptian priest played by horror legend, Christopher Lee (Dracula, The Wicker Man, The Lord of The Rings)

In 1890s Egypt, a team of British archaeologists, John Banning (Cushing), his father Stephen Banning (Felix Aylmer), and Uncle Joseph Whemple (Raymond Huntley) discover the untouched tomb of Princess Ananka (Yvonne Furneaux). Inside the tomb, Peter discovers The Scroll of Life and, when he reads it aloud, he unknowingly brings the mummified body of the high priest Kharis (Lee) back to life...

Three years later and the group have returned to England, unawares of the nefarious consequences of their actions. A follower off the same Egyptian religion unleashes The Mummy to exact grisly revenge on the despoilers of the sacred past.

The iconic Peter Cushing returns as the legendary Baron in his seventh outing, alongside Patrick Troughton ahead of his incarnation as the second Doctor Who, as well as a host of stellar British acting talent including the mighty Dave Prowse (Star Wars) as Frankenstein’s creation, who also happens to be the only man who played this role twice for Hammer, in two very different manifestations.

When a young doctor, Simon Helder (Shane Briant – Time Traveller) is committed to an insane asylum where the legendary Baron Frankenstein supposedly perished after being found experimenting on stolen corpses, he is quickly taken under the wing of mysterious Doctor Victor (Peter Cushing).

But Simon quickly realises that there’s more than meets the eye with Doctor Victor, and that Frankenstein is alive and well and is continuing his macabre experiments...

This grisly, gothic Hammer production is a thought-provoking and stylish closure to the Frankenstein anthology, featuring another superb turn from Peter Cushing and boasting oodles of bloodshed, and spectacularly frightful moments.

THE LAST THING MARY SAW - Gothic, dread-filled Shudder Original coming to UK DVD.

Every family has its secrets, and THE LAST THING MARY SAW is a frightening secret audiences will want in on. From Edoardo Vitaletti, in his directorial debut, this gothic horror features a stand-out cast, including horror favourite Isabelle Fuhrman (Orphan), Rory Culkin (Signs), Stefanie Scott (Insidious 3) and Judith Roberts (Orange Is the New Black, You Were Never Really Here), who give showstopping performances.

We begin in Southold, New York, 1843, where we meet a young Mary (Stefanie Scott) with blood trickling from behind the blindfold tied around her eyes, as she is interrogated about the events surrounding her grandmother’s mysterious death.

As the story flashes back, we witness Mary, raised in a repressively religious and eerily claustrophobic household, finding fleeting happiness in the arms of Eleanor (Isabelle Fuhrman), the family’s maid. Her family, who believe they are seeing, speaking, and acting on God’s behalf, view the girls’ relationship as an abomination to be dealt with as severely as possible, inflicting brutal punishments.

The couple attempts to carry on in secret, but someone is always watching or listening, and the wages of perceived sin threaten to become death, with the tension only heightened by the arrival of an enigmatic stranger (Rory Culkin) and the revelation of greater forces at work...

THE LAST THING MARY SAW oozes with palpable oppression, suspense, and sin. This dark and dread-filled horror promises to sate genre fans' thirst for supernatural twists and innate terror. Audiences should get ready to witness The Last Thing Mary Saw, a painfully tense, heart-wrenching, and impossible-to-forget film.

Having premiered at the 2021 Fantasia International Film Festival, this dark and enchanting Shudder Original is now set to arrive on DVD and digital on 19 September 2022 from Acorn Media International.

Mayhem Film Festival’s BFI FAN-supported new commission NIGHT OF THE CAT screenings confirmed

Mayhem Film Festival returns to Broadway Cinema, Nottingham on 13-16 October for its 18th edition and this year sees the weekend take a feline turn with the BFI Film Audience Network (BFI FAN) supported commission, "NIGHT OF THE CAT" planned for the Saturday night (15 October).

Screening as part of IN DREAMS ARE MONSTERS, a UK-wide film season from the BFI, supported by National Lottery and BFI Film Audience Network, "NIGHT OF THE CAT" - one of four special commissions by leading horror film festivals around the UK - will take over Broadway’s purr-fect Screen 1 with two rare film screenings: Kaneto Shindo’s 1968 Japanese horror film Kuroneko (translated as The Black Cat) will open the night and will be accompanied by a kaleidoscopic live original score from Nottingham-based artist Yumah (aka Lucy Morrow). Then in Mayhem’s late-night cult slot, a 30th anniversary screening of Stephen King’s Sleepwalkers from 1992 will continue the cat theme into the night.

Mayhem Film Festival co-director Steven Sheil cannot wait for the Night of the Cat to begin: “We’re so grateful for the support from the BFI Film Audience Network as part of BFI’s IN DREAMS ARE MONSTERS season that have made Night of the Cat possible. It’s given us the opportunity to not only show two films that are rarely seen on the big screen, but also commission Yumah to produce an original and evocative score that will mesmerise the audience.”

Those attending the weekend will also have the opportunity to see horror maestro Dario Argento’s latest giallo Dark Glasses, as well as the UK premiere of genre-bending ghost story Jethica.

Caroline Hennigan, Broadway’s Director of Programme, is looking forward to welcoming Mayhem fans from across the UK back to Broadway Cinema: “Mayhem is one of our biggest weekends of the year, with an amazing atmosphere that always brings in new film fans to Broadway. The Mayhem team - Steven, Chris and Meli - always programme an eclectic and unique festival that gets people talking and we’re sure this year’s line-up with be no exception.”

Early bird festival passes have been flying out of the door and film fans wanting to experience the weekend have until Friday 19 August to purchase at the reduced rate of £75, before the price is increased to £85.

Mayhem Film Festival co-director, Chris Cooke added: “We’re currently putting together the full line-up for the weekend and will be announcing more titles over the coming weeks. All we can say is that it’s looking like it’ll be another vintage year!”

Further line-up announcements are expected soon, and passes can be purchased from The Broadway Cinema Website at https://www.broadway.org.uk/mayhem2022

Sci-Fi London Film Festival's 48-Hour Film Competition returns 10th-12th September

What do David Hasselhoff (Baywatch), Daisy Ridley (Star Wars) and Gareth Edwards (Rogue One) have in common? They have all taken part in the SCI-FI LONDON 48-HOUR Film Challenge...

This August, SCI-FI-LONDON FILM FESTIVAL are once again launching their stellar, 14th annual, film competition. The 48-HOUR Film Challenge takes place on the weekend of 10th September 2022 for filmmakers across the globe.

The event started in 2008 after SCI-FI-LONDON festival’s director, Louis Savy, visited lots of different festivals and spoke to filmmakers - he kept asking "have you made a sci-fi movie?". Mostly the answer was “we don’t have that kind of budget“.

Shane Carruth reportedly made Primer for $7000 – the main special effect was the innards of a washing machine. Surely, like any good film, you just need the right script, great actors and a good sound mix. If you want to make Avatar, sure you need 200 million dollars, but you can make sci-fi with very little budget and VFX - for example, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

The challenge’s first winner in 2008 was none other than filmmaker Gareth Edwards - with short film Factory Farmed. His debut feature, the multi-award-winning Monsters, was green-lit by Vertigo Films - after they saw his winning 48-hour short film and subsequently developed a feature with him.

Gareth’s subsequent films include Godzilla (2014) and Star Wars: Rogue One. Other previous winners have included Vince Knight, who directed Blue Season (2010), featuring a fresh-faced Daisy Ridley, and Oscar Sharp - director of It's No Game (2017), starring David Hasselhoff.

So, how does it work?

The Format

On the day of the challenge, we give the teams the TITLE of the film they will make, some DIALOGUE that one of the characters must say to screen, and a list of PROPS that must be seen in the film. We also give an optional scientific/sci-fi theme or idea… this could include things like nano-tech, cloning, crypto or crispr… or something a little more “fringe”.

They then have until Monday morning to return the completed movie to us - written, shot and edited all within a weekend!

We don't mind if you shoot the film on a mobile or a professional film kit. It can be animated, live-action, feature a cast of 1000s, or just your pets - it just needs to be a sci-fi story and be written and produced within the time limit.

We shortlist all the completed films and the top 10 films go in front of our industry jury. This year the jury includes:

Elliot Grove - Founder and director of RAINDANCE
Christina Nowak - SMPTE board member and CINEGIRL ambassador
Simon Foster - Founder of Sydney Sci-Fi Film Festival
Sonya Pemberton – Award-winning Producer and science communicator
Two more jurors are yet to be confirmed.
