FrightFest and FAB Press are launching the paperback edition of Michael Gingold’s THE FRIGHTFEST GUIDE TO MONSTER MOVIES in the US. Available from all good bookstores across America from Wed 18 Oct, its official book launch takes place that day at New York’s Forbidden Planet store, with the author present.

In the book, celebrated writer, editor and critic Michael Gingold traces the history of the genre from the silent movies all the way through to the present day. >From Universal Studios legends such as Frankenstein’s Monster and the Wolf Man, to the big bugs, atomic mutants and space invaders that terrorized the ’50s, to the kaiju of Japan and the ecological nightmares of the ’70s and ’80s, to the CG creatures and updated favourites of recent years — they’re all here.

Two hundred of the greatest creature features from across the globe are reviewed, with fascinating facts and critical analysis, all illustrated with a ghoulish gallery of remarkable monstrous imagery. Cult-favourite filmmaker Frank Henenlotter, creator of some of the screen’s most idiosyncratic and bizarre beings, contributes a foreword.

A whole world and grisly galaxy of creatures great and small, spawned from space, the supernatural and strange science, the beginning of time, beneath the sea and beyond imagination, await in this book. Dare you confront the beasts within?

It is also now available in the UK from all good bookstores. The hardback version, launched at this year’s Horror Channel FrightFest event,  can be exclusively purchased from the FAB Press website:

"Witch Creek Road 2": a blood-drenched ode to classic horror

Described as “a blood-drenched ode to classic horror” (, Witch Creek Road “answers the question of what would happen if Mean Girls existed in the Evil Dead universe” (

In short, Witch Creek Road is a survival horror about love, acceptance, death and revenge. And sexy, flesh-eating demons. Yeah, it has those, too.

Issue 2 picks up where issue 1 left off, and examines the idea of madness, and what happens to a person when they've peered too far behind the veil. Oh, and did I mention it takes place in an abandoned cabin in the woods? That always ends well... right?!

Witch Creek Road #2 launched on Kickstarter on September 13th with funding already at 450% and going for !! Be sure to join in on the horror and the fun by visiting the Kickstarter page

Witch Creek Road follows a group of high school seniors, and explores the consequences of taking the wrong road. At its core, it's survival horror, but it's also a story about love, acceptance, death and revenge. And sexy, flesh-eating demons. Because every story needs sexy, flesh-eating demons.

You can read the entire first issue on WEBTOONS or TAPAS - both of these sites have been optimized for reading on mobile devices. Or, for a more traditional comic experience, you can read Witch Creek Road on my personal website,

"Wait, wait, wait! If I can read the comic for free, why am I backing?!"

The answer is: you don't have to. The comic will continue to be posted for free. But if you do back - and the PDF is only $1 - you'll receive a copy of issue 2 immediately after the Kickstarter is over and the reward surveys have been filled out. And once amb3r has finished with her colors, you'll receive an updated, full-color version of the issue. The pages I post online will only ever be in grayscale.

Trailer Released for “Mad Women in My Attic! A Cabaret of Musical Lunacy”

Cabaret performer Monica Salvi and filmmaker Samantha Oči have partnered up to create an eccentric promotional video for the upcoming stage show “Mad Women in my Attic! A Cabaret of Musical Lunacy” - which is due to be performed in London and New York in October 2017.

Shot in London’s Murder Mile Studio (a renowned alternative venue and S&M Dungeon) the trailer is full of dark humour. Miss Salvi describes it as “Hammer Horror meets Rocky Horror meets Alice Cooper” - citing these influences as her greatest inspirations whilst growing up. Paired with the dark and dramatically lit atmospheres that characterise Miss Oči’s cinematography style, the trailer seeks to conveys a small taste of what is to come with Miss Salvi’s full theatrical show.

About the Show
Set in an imaginary lunatic asylum "Mad Women in My Attic!" is the semi-autobiographical cabaret brainchild of Monica Salvi, an Italian performer based in London, UK. With multiple costume changes, haunting and comedic songs from the most daring and dark musical theatre repertoire (such as Sweeney Todd, Kiss of the Spiderwoman, Threepenny Opera, Next to Normal, Jane Eyre, Sunset Boulevard), and some kinky audience participation, Mad Women in my Attic! is a fantastic romp through murderous, wicked and insane characters that Miss Salvi had the pleasure to play in her stage career.

Dark Roast will have its world premiere at the NOLA Horror Film Fest in New Orleans, LA on September 23, followed by October screenings at the Sanford International Film Festival in Sanford, ME and the Halloween International Film Festival in Kill Devil Hills, NC.

Dark Roast is written and directed by Topher Hansson, an up-and-coming multi-hyphenate who also stars in the film alongside Kati McCarron, J.D. Achille, Chris Goodwin, Jose Guns Alves, Codey Gillum, Chris Fisher, and Dane C. Volke.

The project was borne out of frustration. Being trapped at a mundane desk job inspired Hansson to write characters looking to escape death, both literally and figuratively. Dark Roast was initially conceived as a feature film but was condescend into a short due to the limited resources available. Hansson plans to use Dark Roast as a calling card in the hopes of producing the full feature. He explains, "The tone and premise reflect what the eventual feature will bring, in addition to more story, more heart, and much more blood."

Additional festival screenings are in the works, so be sure to follow Dark Roast on Facebook for updates.

"The Incredible Shrinking Man" - Coming to Special Edition Blu-ray

He baffles science! He confounds medicine! Submitted for your approval, the strange story of Scott Carey – an ordinary young man who, through an extraordinary set of circumstances, becomes The Incredible Shrinking Man, released to Special Edition Blu-Ray 13th November from Arrow!

Whilst on a holiday cruise with his wife, young Scott finds himself enveloped by a luminous mist which cover him in a strange, glittery dust. Several months later, he’s accidentally sprayed with an insecticide. Soon, Scott starts shrinking at an alarming rate, and before long he’s thrust into a terrifying world of gigantic cats, spiders and other over-sized pitfalls.

Based on the novel by the massively influential sci-fi and horror writer Richard Matheson (I Am Legend, The Martian Chronicles), with a script adapted by Matheson himself, and directed by Fifties sci-fi king Jack Arnold (Creature From The Black Lagoon), this is rightly regarded as being one of the finest science-fiction films of all time, a critically-acclaimed smash hit that currently has a 90 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Genuinely thrilling, and, as Scott’s plight becomes more desperate, tense and gruelling, the film features superbly realised special effects that bely the era, and the setting Scott finds himself in - filled with oversized household objects that suddenly become threatening and dangerous - takes on a wonderfully surreal atmosphere.

This beautiful UK Blu-ray debut features a documentary on Jack Arnold, the pioneer behind  Creature From The Black Lagoon and It Came From Outer Space; new sleeve artwork and a collector’s booklet; as well as, for old school enthusiasts, a Super 8 presentation of the film - the incredible shrinking reel, if you like.

Special Features

Original uncompressed PCM mono audio
Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing
Auteur on the Campus: Jack Arnold at Universal – an extended documentary about the early career of director Jack Arnold at Universal-International studios

Hellraiser 30th Anniversary - In UK Cinemas Friday 13th October

Audiences beware - Pinhead and his Cenobites are back! To celebrate its 30th anniversary, Clive Barker’s iconic horror masterpiece Hellraiser, the terrifying and gloriously gruesome hit film, is re-released in UK cinemas on Friday 13th October and Steelbook on 30th October.

A couple, Larry (Andrew Robinson - Cobra, Star Trek : Deep Space Nine) and Julia (Claire Higgins - The Golden Compass, TV's The Worst Witch), move into an old house belonging to Larry’s family, to make a fresh start. Exploring the dilapidated house, Julia discover a hideous creature - Larry's half-brother Frank (Sean Chapman - TV's The Case), who is also Julia's former lover - hiding in the attic. Having lost his earthly body to other-worldly demons called the Cenobites after a ceremony with a strange golden puzzle box, he is brought back into existence by a drop of blood on the floor. Frank soon forces his former mistress to bring him human sacrifices to complete his body in a bid to escape the clutches of the Cenobites… but the Cenobites have other plans for him.

Clive Barker’s debut film, a nightmarish vision of flesh ripping demons wreaking havoc on a suburban household, was unleashed on cinema audiences in 1987, and became a box office sensation, spawning numerous sequels, a legion of devoted fans and turning Pinhead and his Cenobites (“sado-masochists from beyond the grave” as Barker describes them) into horror icons alongside the likes of Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees.

Thirty years later and the film is as terrifying, nightmarish and gruesomely effective as ever - featuring wonderful central performances from Andrew Robinson (made famous as the Gemini killer in Dirty Harry) and Clare Higgins as the couple, whose life is torn apart when brother Frank appears in the attic and starts demanding flesh; Ashley Laurence (RED) makes a terrific horror heroine, attempting to send the Cenobites back to hell.

Barker’s taut, twisted script, adapted from his story The Hellbound Heart, coupled with his remarkably assured direction (belying the fact this was his debut) ensures a film dripping with dread, and bursting with inventive set pieces and bloody imagery -  including the appearance of the gruesome Cenobites, summoned by the infamous gold puzzle box, and their metal hooked torture devices.

The 30th Anniversary re-release - appropriately on Friday 13th of October - gives audiences a chance to see it once more in all its gory big screen glory - and for the uninitiated to have their souls torn apart for the first time!

Look out for "Hellraiser" back in UK cinemas this October.

Channel Zero makes its UK DVD & BD debut October

"Channel Zero - Series One : Candle Cove", one of the most terrifying and talked about series of recent years, makes its UK DVD and BD debut this October thanks to Second Sight.

Child psychologist Mike Painter is growing increasingly suspicious that children’s TV show Candle Cove may have played a role in a series of nightmarish events from his childhood, including the disappearance of his twin brother in the summer of 1988. When Mike returns home to investigate what happened all those years ago, he soon discovers that whatever caused the horror before, may be happening again.

Inspired by a Creepypasta blog post by Kris Staub, Syfy’s spine-chilling six-part anthology series was created by Nick Antosca (Hannibal) and stars Paul Schneider (The Tunnel) and Abigail Pniowsky (Arrival). It has been critically acclaimed by TV and horror fans alike and now arrives for its UK home entertainment release on 9 October 2017.

This enthralling, spooky, unsettling series will  have you hiding behind the sofa.

PINION ARMAGEDDON festival 12th-16th Sept, New York...

Charles Pinion, the director behind the notorious shot-on-video features Twisted Issues, Red Spirit Lake and We Await invades New York for a week’s worth of events to promote his newest feature, "American Mummy" from Wild Eye Releasing.  This one week only east coast appearance by Pinion will include some extremely rare screenings that will be an absolute must for fans of macabre, transgressive and just plain weird cinema!

The events kick off Tuesday September 12th at Alamo Drafthouse in Yonkers, NY, for a special 3-D screening of "American Mummy" as part of their 3-Delirium series. Then on Friday September 15th head to Superchief Gallery for a night of obscure cuts from Pinion’s sordid back catalogue, including his insanely obscure 1990s adult videos and a very rare screening of the completely uncensored cut of "Red Spirit Lake"

On Saturday September 16th meet Charles in a more intimate setting at NYC’s Forbidden Planet, where you can grab an autographed copy of Wild Eye Releasing’s Blu-ray or DVD release of "American Mummy" as well as some other rare Pinion pieces.  Then later that night head over to the legendary Cinema Village for a late night screening of "American Mummy".

And what would a trip to NYC be without a warm welcome from some of the cities most revered underground artists? Scooter McCrae’s newest short "Saint Frankenstein" will be supporting both American Mummy screenings and Tommy Turner (who appeared in Pinion’s Red Spirit Lake) will be presenting his little-seen 1985 short "The Magician" at the Superchief Gallery event.

Tuesday September 12th 9PM

"American Mummy" presented in 3-D, preceded by Scooter McCrae’s "Saint Frankenstein" at Alamo Drafthouse in Yonkers, NY. With Charles Pinion and Scooter McCrae in attendance.

*American Mummy’s only NYC area 3D screening!* Two kings of 1990s shot-on-video artsploitation team up to show off their new releases, both super-freaky takes on those old Universal Monsters tropes we know and love. Pinion’s American Mummy is a madcap blood-drenched desert romp that’s loaded with 3D gore effects, and Saint Frankenstein is McCrae’s profoundly creepy short film that asks about the Monster’s current whereabouts.  Even Andy Warhol would blush!

24-Hour Horror Movie Marathon announced by Wild Eye Releasing/Monster Movies

One for my US site readers, particularly those who live near Ohio.

Wild Eye Releasing, a growing leader in independent cinema since 2008, in association with Midnight Monster Movies are hosting a day of splastastic, fantastic horror fun as they host a marathon of some of Wild Eye’s most popular releases.

The event, being held at the Gateway Film Center in Ohio on September 16/17, features a full 24 hours of the catalogue as well as dinner and breakfast.

With the assistance of Wild Eye president Rob Hauschild, who admits his product and practices are  unapologetically based on those of B-movie legend Roger Corman, organizer Bob Tesla has put together a slate of outrageously fun films including Asylum of Darkness (with cast and crew Q&A), erotic horror-comedy The Disco Exorcist, Donald Farmer’s Shark Exorcist and Tales of Poe starring genre legends Adrienne King and Caroline Williams.

The marathon features :

Tales of Poe
Caesar & Otto's Deadly Xmas
Frankenstein's Hungry Dead
Dinner Break: Tailgate Dinner Buffet
Queen Crab
Bigfoot: The Movie
Shark Exorcist
Night of the Living Dead: Reanimated simultaneous double feature
Asylum of Darkness

Now the Larkin's are about to endure another: Traffic lights blink an eerie warning, a ghostly visage prowls in the streets, and graves erupt from the local cemetery in an implacable march of terror . . . And beneath the murky surface of the river, a shifting, almost human shape slowly takes form to seek a terrible vengeance.

Starring Josh Stewart (Shooter, The Dark Knight Rises), Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future, I am Not a Serial Killer), Robbie Kay (Pirates of the Caribbean : On Stranger Tides), Candy Clark (Twin Peaks, Zodiac) with Tommy Wiseau (The Room), Madison Wolfe (The Conjuring 2), and Laura Cayouette (Django : Unchained) co-star.

"The Transfiguration" - UK BD review

A troubled young teenager with an overriding obsession about vampires is the subject of Director Michael O’Shea’s feature film debut “The Transfiguration”, which is out now on UK DVD and Blu-Ray.

Set in Queens, New York. Young Milo (Eric Ruffin) is a 14 year old black kid, who lives with his older brother in a decidedly rough neighbourhood. With no friends and still traumatised by his mothers death, he spends his entire time watching vampire films and reading books about vampire lore.

But then he meets a similarly troubled teen, Sophie (Chloe Revine), who’s just moved into her uncle’s apartment upstairs and the two quickly begin to bond. But Milo isn’t all he appears to be and unbeknown to her, has been taking his obsession with vampires a little too far…

Not what you would call an action film, this is very much a slow-burner, which lets the characters and story develop slowly over the course of the film. Indeed for the most part, it’s essentially a drama about a troubled teen befriending an abused kid, with the whole vampire thing being little more than a sub-plot.

But there is this whole dark element hanging over the story, in which you never really know how far Milo is going to go with this vampire thing with Sophie, who’s only exposure to vampires has been the Twilight films (which this film takes great delight in taking a sideways swipe at).

Extras on the disc include…

Filmmakers’ audio commentary track, with Writer/Director Michael O’Shea and Producer Susan Leber

Making of feature (10mins) – Director Michael O’Shea, Producer Susan Leber discuss how the film took shape and actors talk Eric Ruffin and Chloe Revine discuss their characters, along with other members of the crew.

Deleted scenes. A couple of scenes cut from the film Two scenes, one set in a Deli and one in the East Village area are presented with directors introuduction.

Extended scenes. The scenes with Milo and Sophie talking at the bus stop and an extended end scene where Sophie is reading Milo’s letter are shown in full with directors introduction.

Trailer  Lastly the film’s theatrical trailer is included on the disc.

I was sent the Blu-Ray to review, but the DVD release apparently contains the exact same extras on.

If you enjoyed “Let the Right One In”, or George Romero’s “Martin”, of which this film shares similar themes, then you will probably enjoy this. Look out for Troma films president Lloyd Kaufman (The Toxic Avenger) who has a minor role as a homeless man.
