RUMPELSTILTSKIN [2025] - A review

I was recently sent a screener of the new fantasy horror RUMPELSTILTSKIN [2025] to take a look at (not to be confused with the 1987 film of the same name), and I must say, I was very pleasantly surprised by this new twist on the old fairy tale.

Taking place in Medieval england, a local miller hears that the King is looking for a wife. So he tries to palm his daughter Evalina (Hannah Baxter-Eve - Escape) off on him, telling him that she can spin hay into gold.

Of course, when the king demands proof, she realises that she's in trouble. So, when she is visited by a rather strange creature, who claims that he can help her, she jumps at the chance. But unfortunately, what she doesn't realise, is that his services will come at a terrible price, which is when the real fun begins...

Extremely tongue in cheek, and filled with dark humour, this was actually a really fun film, which plays like a bizarre cross between The Brothers Grimm, Game of Thrones and Carry on Henry (Yes, seriously) and actually goes beyond the original fairy tale to provide a much more interesting climax (and judging by the bawdy behaviour in this, there are plenty of those in the film).

I didn't actually realise that this was going to be a period piece until after I started watching, and had (wrongly) assumed it was going to be some modern day retelling , along the lines of those Leprechaun films. So I was extremely impressed with the films aesthetics and indeed the special effects, considering this was obviously a low budget production.

Writer/Director Andy Edwards previously gave us the Zombie Comedy "Ibiza Undead" and more recently the folk horror "Punch". He clearly knows his craft, and RUMPELSTILTSKIN is proof that you don't necessarily need a lot of money to make a good film,

If you like dark, medieval, fantasy horrors, you should enjoy this.

RUMPELSTILTSKIN is available Digitally on Amazon Prime and selected other streaming services.

DEAD ON THE VINE - A Review

A couple of hapless hoteliers find themselves in deep trouble, when a couple of criminals call in looking for help, in Director Mark AC Brown's thriller DEAD ON THE VINE which is currently showing on the festival circuit and the Director was kind enough to share a screener with me.

Set in the East Sussex countryside, brothers Ellis (David Whitney - Guardians) and Drayton (Tom Sawyer – Soldiers of the Damned) are travelling back to London, when Drayton suffers an epileptic seizure. Forcing his brother to call in at a remote hotel to ask for help.

The couple running the Hotel, Joni (Victoria Johnstone) and Cora (Shereener Browne) welcome them inside, but Cora immediately becomes suspicious of them. Particularly with Drayton's increasingly erratic behaviour, after he regains consciousness.

But after discovering what the brothers have stashed in the boot of their car, things take a very dark turn. But with police roadblocks going up, following reports of a nearby robbery (no prizes for guessing who's behind that) and the hoteliers expecting guests for an exclusive wine tasting party that evening, the brothers plan to lay low, quickly descends into a comedy of errors.

Featuring a number of plot twists and turns, not to mention bloody killings, I thought this was a rather fun film, that makes good use of it's scenic location. Being set at a remote hotel, overlooking a vineyard.

There was definitely a streak of jet black humour running through this, which helped lighten the tone of what otherwise could have been a very grim and dark feature and I was pleasantly surprised to see Comedienne and Actress Kate Robbins (TV's After Life) turn up in a supporting role, who arguably steals the show. As she discovers what's going on and proceeds to give the brothers an amusing lecture in the law and criminality.

Whilst not strictly a horror film, in the true sense of the word, I felt there was enough dark subject matter and blood to qualify. The film is coming to DVD in the US and Canada shortly and there will, hopefully, be a Digital release in the UK later this year. So if you get chance, I'd definitely recommend checking it out.

Pulp Horror Novel TICK TOWN - Coming to Kindle and Paperback

Author Christopher Micklos and publisher Castle Bridge Media today released the cover art for Micklos’ upcoming debut novel TICK TOWN.

“When I sat down to write my debut novel, TICK TOWN, I was inspired by the gonzo pulp horror paperbacks of the 1970's and 1980's, as well as the classic creature feature sci-fi movies of the 1950's and 1960's,” Micklos said today. “So when I sat down with my publisher, Castle Bridge Media, to work on the cover art, I wanted something that would evoke those classic covers and posters I love.”

The cover was designed by In Churl Yo of Castle Bridge Media.

In
TICK TOWN, small town Tomahawk Hollow has a huge problem. Slaughtered livestock. Disappearing townsfolk. And something in the woods hungry for blood. When a young reporter and her boss investigate, they discover a band of giant mutant ticks have made the rural Wisconsin tourist town their feeding ground.

Now, with the annual Harvest Moon Jubilee about to begin, Emmaline and Jackson must race to find the queen tick and her nest before a massive clutch of monster eggs hatch…and thousands more terrifying ticks are unleashed into the world!

Christopher Micklos is a life-long horror junkie, an award-winning filmmaker, and a frequently published writer of horror-themed fiction and non-fiction. His two feature films, THE NURSERY and THE HEADMISTRESS, are widely available streaming and on DVD; and his writing has appeared in numerous national outlets, including Rue Morgue Magazine, Sci-Fi Lampoon Magazine, and many others.

M3GAN 2.0 - In UK Cinemas, June

The murderous doll who captivated pop culture in 2023 is back. And this time she’s not alone. The original creative team behind that phenomenon—led by horror titans James Wan for Atomic Monster,Jason Blum for Blumhouse and director Gerard Johnstone— reboot an all-new wild chapter in A.I. mayhem with M3GAN 2.0.

Two years after M3GAN, a marvel of artificial intelligence, went rogue and embarked on a murderous (and impeccably choreographed) rampage and was subsequently destroyed, M3GAN’s creator Gemma (Allison Williams) has become a high-profile author and advocate for government oversight of A.I. Meanwhile, Gemma’s niece Cady (Violet McGraw), now 14, has become a teenager, rebelling against Gemma’s overprotective rules.

Unbeknownst to them, the underlying tech for M3GAN has been stolen and misused by a powerful defense contractor to create a military-grade weapon known as Amelia (Ivanna Sakhno - Ahsoka, Pacific Rim: Uprising), the ultimate killer infiltration spy. But as Amelia’s self-awareness increases, she becomes decidedly less interested in taking orders from humans. Or in keeping them around.

With the future of human existence on the line, Gemma realizes that the only option is to resurrect M3GAN (Amie Donald, voiced by Jenna Davis) and give her a few upgrades, making her faster, stronger, and more lethal. As their paths collide, the original A.I bitch is about to meet her match.

Directed by acclaimed returning filmmaker Gerard Johnstone, the film co-stars returning cast members Brian Jordan Alvarez and Jen Van Epps as Gemma’s loyal tech teammates, Cole and Tess, and new characters played by Aristotle Athari (Saturday Night Live, Hacks), Timm Sharp (Apples Never Fall, Percy Jackson and the Olympians) and Grammy winner and 11-time Emmy nominee Jemaine Clement (Avatar: The Way of Water, What We Do in the Shadows).

Produced by James Wan, Jason Blum and Allison Williams, the film is executive produced by Gerard Johnstone, Adam Hendricks, Greg Gilreath, Michael Clear, Judson Scott and Mark D. Katchur.

The first M3GAN film shattered box office records, opening to $30.4 million domestically to become the biggest opening weekend for a PG-13 horror film since A Quiet Place Part II. The film went on to gross more than $180 million worldwide.

M3GAN 2.0 is released to UK Cinemas June 27th.

Dario Argento's FOUR FLIES ON GREY VELVET - On 4K UHD and BD from Shameless, April

Celebrated rock musician Roberto Tobias (Michael Brandon) is thrust into a nightmare. Framed for a brutal stabbing, he soon finds himself ensnared in a web of senseless murders. The only clue to the deranged killer lies in a cryptic image captured on a victim’s retina. Roberto’s desperate search for truth will push him to the brink of madness, culminating in a shocking climax.

Introspection becomes art in Argento’s hands, making FOUR FLIES ON GREY VELVET essential viewing for anyone seeking a glimpse into the director’s psyche. It concludes Argento’s iconic ‘Animal Trilogy’, paving the way for Suspiria and his later expressionistic masterpieces that earned him the title ‘Master of Horror.’

Dario Argento describes the film as a deeply personal exploration of his inner turmoil: “I decided to let loose, go crazy, and unleash all my creativity and personal nightmares. Psychoanalysis plays a major role in the film because it’s partly autobiographical – rather Freudian, in fact.”  Both Argento and lead actor Michael Brandon, in exclusive interviews for this edition, reveal how the director found his alter ego in Brandon, channelling his own paranoia to create an unsettling psychological thriller.

This 4K UHD HDR edition with Dolby Vision is encoded from the 4K restoration of original camera and sound materials (supervised by Argento’s DOP Luciano Tovoli), finally presenting the director’s vision as he wishes it to be experienced - and preferably in a completely dark room.

• New exclusive interview with star Michael Brandon
• Interview with writer and assistant dir. Luigi Cozzi

Horror Queen Ayvianna Snow Stars in Two Spine-Chilling New Films: RUMPLESTILTSKIN & ST. PATRICK'S DAY MASSACRE

Ayvianna Snow, an actor hailed as the "British Queen of Horror", is making waves with two thrilling new films set to send shivers down the spines of horror fans this spring.

RUMPLESTILTSKIN tells the story of one of the scariest childhood villains—and this time, the haunting tale gets even darker.

A young woman makes a deal she comes to regret with a mysterious creature and must now save her first-born child from his evil clutches. Ayvianna plays the seductive yet deadly role of a Succubus, luring unsuspecting men to their fiery fate.

Director Andy Edwards said, “This is the second time I've worked with Ayvianna on a film, and as soon as I'd written the character, I knew she'd be perfect for it.”

In ST. PATRICK'S DAY MASSACRE, directed by Steve Lawson, Ayvianna plays the role of Kendra, one of a group of college friends tricked into spending the night in a creepy Irish tavern, where the corridors are stalked by a vengeful undead killer.

With an obsession for cleanliness that borders on the compulsive, will Kendra's decision to take a shower be her final mistake and summon the prowling killer?

Ayvianna says, “Horror films can tap into a very raw, primal part of us as human beings—fear is one of the most visceral emotions. Horror hits parts of us that other genres cannot reach.”

Horror channel NYX UK celebrates the birthdays of Lon Chaney and Lamberto Bava amongst slate of April premieres

NYX UK celebrates the birthdays of two iconic figures in the horror genre. On Tuesday 1 April, the channel honours Lon Chaney, the legendary "Man of a Thousand Faces", with screenings of Tod Browning’s THE UNKNOWN (1927) at 9pm, followed at 10.15pm by THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME (1923), in which he plays a heart-breaking ‘Quasimodo’ - a perfect tribute to his unparalleled contributions to silent horror cinema.

Then on Thursday 3 April,  NYX UK celebrates the legacy of Italian horror maestro Lamberto Bava with a double-bill  of his most gore-soaked, high-energy horror spectacles – DEMONS (9pm) and DEMONS 2 (11pm). Produced by the legendary Dario Argento, they blend supernatural terror with neon-drenched 80s excess, creating some of the most stylish and chaotic zombie-like horror ever put to film.

Horror series DARK REWIND continues its 9pm popular run with two April channel premieres. On April 8, host August Kyss takes viewers back to 1980 to revisit the meaty cult horror-comedy MOTEL HELL, and then on April 22, she invites us back to 1983 for a deep dive into THE HOUSE ON SORORITY ROW, a slasher gem drenched in sorority drama, deadly secrets, and classic 80s horror vibes.

Another horror series enjoying a successful run is GALVASTON’S CAVERN OF CREEPS, which streams on Thursday nights at 9pm. This month  our favourite underworld exile Galveston and his clueless mortal roommate Jack tackle two Channel premieres - Jacques Tourneur’s 1957 supernatural classic NIGHT OF THE DEMON (a.k.a. Curse of the Demon) and Joseph Green’s 1962 sci-fi horror THE BRAIN THAT WOULDN’T DIE.

There are two other Channel premieres this month - Anders Banke's multi-award winning vampire horror FROSTBITE (Frostbitten, 2006), which plays on Thurs 10 April, 9pm, and HANSEL & GRETAL GET BAKED (2013), a horror meets stoner comedy that puts a darkly humorous, twist on the classic fairy tale. Viewers can catch this at 9pm, Sun 20 April

Other gruesome 9pm delights include Renaud Gauthier’s Canadian slasher DISCOPATHE, (Fri 11 April), Scottish werewolf thriller WILD COUNTRY, starring Peter Capaldi and Martin Compston (Thurs 17 April), Israel’s first slasher film RABIES (Thurs 24 April), GRIMM LOVE (Fri 25 April), a psychological horror film inspired by the Armin Meiwes cannibal murder case, and TENEBRAE, one of Dario Argent’s Giallo masterpieces, which screens on Sun 26 April.
