Artists on the edge, eyes without a face, a season of subspecies and more streaming on ARROW this August...

Key highlights this AUGUST on the essential, alternative streaming service ARROW include an extraordinary, award-winning pulpy Indonesian actioner, a superb cult shocker about a hard-partying, blood-craving L.A. artist, a season of B-movie mayhem, crazed animals, giallo classics, French cult horror, and much more...

August starts with a red-hot blast of VENGEANCE IS MINE, ALL OTHERS PAY CASH, from acclaimed Indonesian director Edwin (Postcards from the Zoo) and based on the novel by Eka Kurniawan. Winner of the Golden Leopard at the 2021 Locarno Film Festival, this is a pulpy, energetic throwback to 80s South East Asian action and coming-of-age cinema about a young man who can’t get it up. With echoes of early Takashi Miike, VENGEANCE IS MINE, ALL OTHERS PAY CASH is a wild and unexpectedly poignant meditation on toxic masculinity and a culture steeped in violence from one of Indonesia’s most exciting directorial voices… and you can see it first and furious on ARROW.

Also in August, ARROW present director Joe Begos’ (The Mind’s Eye) third feature, BLISS, a blood-drenched masterpiece that has drawn comparisons to the films of Gaspar Noé and Abel Ferrara. Struggling through a seemingly endless creative rut, hard-partying and Los-Angeles-based artist Dezzy Donahue (Dora Madison, Friday Night Lights) can’t stop the resulting bad streak of problems, including unpaid rent and professional stagnation. In an effort to combat her tough luck, Dezzy throws caution to the wind, indulges in heavy drugs and rages her nights away. Gradually, though, the party starts to end, and in its place, Dezzy finds herself thirsting for blood and suffering from terrifying visions.

Seasons in August include The Subspecies Collection, ARROW’s latest film series from Charles Band and Full Moon Studios. This epic vampiric five-film collection is soaked in blood, packed full of practical effects and features the four-film Subspecies series, as well as the spin-off, Vampire Journals; Tooth and Claw, where you’ll meet the animals of the ARROW menagerie, in a curated season full of all of the critters that you'd least like to meet vying for your attention and probably the meat off of your bones too, including rampant apes, gnawing rats, flapping blood-sucking bats, slithering constricting snakes, brutal bears, hungry sharks, caustic jellyfish, and killer crocs; and FIIIGHT!, featuring action-packed films showcasing the best scraps on ARROW, inspired by the brilliant and bruising beatdowns in VENGEANCE IS MINE, ALL OTHERS PAY CASH, with titles includingVersus, The Sword and the Claw, and Sister Street Fighter.

ALSO SHOWING: Powerful French classics EYES WITHOUT A FACE and LA HAINE, Sherilyn Fenn in  the sultry horror fantasy MERIDIAN,  disturbing Australian serial killer thriller HOUNDS OF LOVE, Vinegar Syndrome Selects, and much more…

FrightFest & FAB Press launch THE FRIGHTFEST GUIDE TO VAMPIRE MOVIES

FrightFest and FAB Press once again join forces to launch THE FRIGHTFEST GUIDE TO VAMPIRE MOVIES, which goes exclusively on sale during Arrow Video FrightFest 2022, Aug 25 – Aug 29.

Both the author Nathaniel Thompson and author/critic Kim Newman, who wrote the foreword, will be present to sign copies at the Cineworld, Leicester Square. Dates and times to be confirmed.

This is the sixth edition of the FrightFest Guides, the latest in a series of successful, wide appeal books for both the curious spectator and the cult connoisseur. Previous genres covered include Exploitation Movies, Monster Movies, Ghost Movies, Werewolf Movies and Grindhouse Movies.

For centuries, mankind has been chilled by tales of vampires. A fixture of literature, art, and folk tales, the vampire was a natural early choice for a movie monster at the dawn of cinema and has remained popular ever since as the screen’s most enduring and sexually charged nightmare figure.

Within these bloodstained pages, you’ll discover all the vampire icons, from Bela Lugosi and Max Schreck’s pioneering fiends to the heyday of Hammer Films, but that’s just a sanguinary taste of what’s to come as you explore macabre offerings from Hong Kong, India, Italy, France, Germany, Japan and many more countries across the globe.

It’s all served up on a blood-spattered silver platter by author and film historian Nathaniel Thompson, who also delivers a globetrotting introduction to the history and evolution of vampire cinema, from the silent era to the modern age of undead heartthrobs and vampire assassins.

Sweetening the bloody deal is a foreword by legendary writer and monster expert Kim Newman, who dragged vampire literature into the daylight of the modern age with his Anno Dracula series..

The FrightFest exclusive hardcover will be on sale for just £25, and people not attending in person won’t miss out as they have the option to pre-order the book from www.fabpress.com -- pre-ordered books will ship the first week of September.

The Paperback publication date is 18 October 2022.

Contemporary Welsh horror THE FEAST - in UK cinemas August

Picturehouse Entertainment are pleased to announce the release of Welsh contemporary horror THE FEAST (GWLEDD) exclusively in UK cinemas nationwide from 19 August.

A haunting, slow-burning horror tale exploring the consequences of greed, corruption and man’s exploitation of the earth, THE FEAST (GWLEDD) is the directorial debut of Lee Haven Jones (Doctor Who) and was written and produced by Roger Williams (Bang).  It stars Annes Elwy (Little Women), Nia Roberts (Under Milk Wood), Julian Lewis Jones (Justice League), Steffan Cennydd (Last Summer) and Sion Alun Davies (The Left Behind)

Filmed in the Welsh language, THE FEAST (GWLEDD) unfolds over the course of one evening as a wealthy family gathers for a sumptuous dinner in their ostentatious house in the Welsh mountains. The guests are a local businessman and a neighbouring farmer, and the intent is to secure a business deal to mine in the surrounding countryside.  When a mysterious young woman arrives to be their waitress for the evening, the family’s beliefs and values are challenged as her quiet yet disturbing presence begins to unravel their lives - slowly, deliberately and with the most terrifying consequences.

THE FEAST (GWLEDD) was a hit at last year’s SXSW and the BFI London Film Festival and has won awards from South Korea’s Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, Lisbon’s MotelX Festival and Switzerland’s Neuchatel Fantastic Film Festival.

Steeped in Welsh folklore, THE FEAST (GWLEDD) offers an unsettling lesson in respecting your heritage and remaining connected to your roots.  With its eerie and visceral sound design and bold cinematography both gorgeous and gruesome with splashes of gore, THE FEAST serves up a potent and intoxicating cinematic experience.

THE FEAST (GWLEDD) is a SGRECH production for S4C, Ffilm Cymru Wales, BFI (awarding funds from the National Lottery) & Melville Media in association with Fields Park.

Hex Studios launches 'Hellion Video' label with retro chiller LINGER

The Scottish genre outfit, best known for cult horrors 'Lord of Tears' and 'The Devil's Machine', has announced its latest horror feature, the first in a new offshoot that seeks to champion unique voices in the genre. Titles under the Hellion Video label will feature hand-painted, VHS-inspired cover art, and present bold, original stories with an underground/ experimental vibe that sets them apart from the mainstream.

LINGER, the first film produced under the new banner, follows the 'Ghost Crew', a small-time documentary team, as they unravel the chilling mystery of a notorious abandoned hospital, and the tragic events that have taken place there. The locals say the place is cursed, that death will come to all who dare venture into its bleak halls. As the team closes in on the truth, they become targets for the dark forces at play, and a search for answers becomes a battle for survival.

Written by and starring Tom Staunton, and directed by Lawrie Brewster, LINGER is a unique horror hybrid that blends the documentary style of 'Lake Mungo' and 'Noroi the Curse' with the haunting aesthetic of Scottish folk-horrors like 'Lord of Tears' and 'The Wicker Man'.

Starring alongside Staunton are Megan Tremethick (The Lockdown Hauntings), Antony Strachan (Whiskey Galore), Gordie Holliday (The Devil's Machine), Richard Pate, Nick Ford, Jon Vangdal Aamaas, and Alexander Zorn.

The filmmakers have just launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the final stages of post-production, and to support future projects under the Hellion Video label. An array of rewards are on offer, from Collector's Edition BluRays to T-Shirts, books, and original artwork. The film, a co-production between Hex Studios and Needle's Eye Productions for Hellion Video, is slated for release in December.

NEW ADDITIONS TO SHUDDER’S MOVIE LIBRARY

1st August

THE CRAZIES
Ordinary citizens turn into homicidal maniacs after a chemical weapon is released in George Romero's 1973 follow-up to Night of the Living Dead. After a mercifully brief foray into romantic comedy, Romero returned to the subject that made him famous - multiple maniacs attacking unsuspecting townspeople - and the government's misguided response to the chaos.

SEASON OF THE WITCH

HERSCHELL GORDON LEWIS COLLECTION

This month Shudder presents a collection of films from exploitation cinema pioneer Herschell Gordon Lewis. Often referred to as the “Godfather of Gore,” Lewis is known for singlehandedly creating the “splatter” subgenre of horror films. Curated collection will include The Wizard of Gore, The Gore Gore Girls, Two Thousand Maniacs, Blood Feast, Color Me Blood Red, and The Gruesome Twosome.

THE WIZARD OF GORE
Montag the Magnificent's blood-curdling onstage performances shock and dazzle his audiences in equal measure. But when his participants start winding up dead, local TV talk show hostess Sherry Carson suspects his gruesome "act" may be more sinister than it first seems...

THE GORE GORE GIRLS
A vicious killer with a twisted sense of humor is butchering the girls of a go-go dancing club. As the grim death toll mounts, young reporter Nancy Weston teams up with obnoxious but dapper private investigator Abraham Gentry to try and crack the case.

TWO THOASAND MANIACS
A group of Yankee tourists take a detour and wind up in the small Southern town of Pleasant Valley--which has magically rematerialized 100 years after its destruction during the Civil War. They find themselves welcomed by the eager townsfolk as guests of honor at their centennial celebrations. Little do the Northerners know that the festivities are set to include torture, death and dismemberment.

BLOOD FEAST
Dorothy Fremont is looking to throw a party unlike any other, and she gets just that when she hires the decidedly sinister Fuad Ramses to cater the event. Promising to provide her guests with an authentic Egyptian feast, Ramses promptly sets about acquiring the necessary ingredients--the body parts of nubile young women!

COLOUR ME BLOOD RED
Painter Adam Sorge has found himself in a bit of a creative lull. But when his girlfriend accidentally cuts her finger, he realizes what his work has been missing all this time - human blood! With pressure mounting from local gallery owner Farnsworth to deliver his next masterpiece, Adam sets about procuring as much glorious haemoglobin as he can muster - first from himself, and then from anyone unfortunate enough to pass by his sickening studio of slaughter.

THE GRUSESOME TWOSOME
Down at the Little Wig Shop, the batty Mrs. Pringle and her socially-inept son Rodney are procuring only the finest heads of hair - by scalping the local co-eds! Can they be stopped before they clear the entire campus of luxuriant-haired ladies?

16th August

ALONE WITH YOU
As a young woman painstakingly prepares a romantic homecoming for her girlfriend, their apartment begins to feel more like a tomb when voices, shadows, and hallucinations reveal a truth she has been unwilling to face.

18th August

PROXIMITY
A young scientist is abducted by extraterrestrials, but when no one believes his story, he becomes obsessed with finding proof.

22nd August

100 MONSTERS
In the first of a trilogy of yokai (Japanese supernatural spirits) films written by Tetsuro Yoshia and released in the late 60s, a greedy slumlord’s attempts to forcefully evict his tenants invite the wrath of the titular yokai when a cleansing ritual is botched, with terrifying results.

SPOOK WARFARE
In the second Yokai film, an evil Babylonian vampire is inadvertently awoke by treasure hunters, and a brave samurai teams with the yokai to defeat the bloodthirsty demon.

ALONG WITH THE GHOSTS
In the last of the trilogy, the yokai are roused to defend a young girl on the run from deadly yakuza

SNAKE GIRL AND THE SILVER HAIRED WITCH
Noriaki Yuasa, director of the much-beloved Gamera series, adapts the works of horror manga pioneer Kazuo Umezu. A young girl named Sayuri is reunited with her estranged family after years in an orphanage – but trouble lurks within the walls of the large family home. Her mother is an amnesiac after a car accident six months earlier, her sullen sister is confined to the attic and a young housemaid dies inexplicably of a heart attack just before Sayuri arrives… is it all connected to her father’s work studying venomous snakes? And is the fanged, serpentine figure that haunts Sayuri’s dreams the same one spying on her through holes in the wall?

BLOODTHIRSTY
Grey, an indie pop singer, whose first album was a smash hit, gets an invitation to work with notorious music producer Vaughn Daniels at his remote studio in the woods. Together with her girlfriend Charlie, they arrive at his mansion, and the work begins. But as her work with the emotionally demanding Vaughn deepens, the vegan singer begins to hunger for raw meat. As her appetite changes, her body starts to transform and she begins to find out who she really is.

25th August

THE FINAL WISH

Line up announced for the Arrow Video FrightFest this August

Arrow Video FrightFest, the UK’s most popular horror and fantasy film festival, is back at London’s Cineworld Leicester Square and the Prince Charles Cinema from Thursday August 25 – Monday 29 August for five days of the very best of global genre cinema.

Celebrating its 23rd blockbuster edition with thirty-two world, twenty-two International / European and eighteen UK premieres, the world renowned event leads the way in attesting to the versatility of the genre and this year is no exception, with seventeen countries represented, spanning five continents.

The Lair

The festival opens with the World premiere of THE LAIR, an action-packed gore shocker from Neil Marshall, who calls his latest monstrous creation “The Dirty Half Dozen meets THE THING”. Neil will be attending with star Charlotte Kirk and will also introduce a special 4K restoration screening of his modern classic, DOG SOLDIERS.

The Closing night film is the European premiere of Scott Mann’s FALL. Get ready for a pulse-pounding, vertigo-inducing experience as two best friends, stranded at the top of a remote, abandoned 2000-feet high radio tower, fight for survival.

Fall

One of this year’s special guests, making a welcome return, is horror icon Dario Argento, introducing the UK premiere of his latest giallo DARK GLASSES, which compares to the extreme thrillers he pioneered in the 1970s with THE BIRD WITH THE CRYSTAL PLUMAGE and DEEP RED.

This year’s main screen line-up is chock-a-block with shock and awe, grindhouse style classics Ryûhei Kitamura’s sensational THE PRICE WE PAY and John Swab’s extraordinary CANDY LAND, the UK premiere of buzz title BARBARIAN, starring Georgina Campbell and Bill Skarsgård, the World premiere of anticipated slasher sequel TERRIFIER 2, continuing the gory misadventures of Art the Clown, Dominic Brunt’s hair-raising WOLF MANOR,  also a world premiere, the Sundance sensation PIGGY, Travis Steven’s Tribeca hit A WOUNDED FAWN, Cannes Film Festival opener FINAL CUT, the French remake of ONE CUT OF THE DEAD, and H4Z4RD, the turbo-charged, splatter action movie of the year.

A Wounded Fawn

It’s a rich year for ambitious and quirky sci-fi movies and the main screens light up with Mali Elfman’s warm-hearted science fiction epic NEXT EXIT, the sensational sci-fi horror hybrid THE VISITOR FROM THE FUTURE, Quentin Dupieux’s quirky comedy time travel fantasy INCREDIBLE BUT TRUE and SOMETHING IN THE DIRT, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s fusion of DIY science fiction, pre-apocalyptic vibes and overwhelming paranoia. The visionary dream-weavers will be attending the festival, as will Brea Grant, here as director of twisted rock horror TORN HEARTS and star of NIGHT SKY, Jacob Gentry’s provocative indie science fiction fantasy.

Other main screen World premieres include TERRIFIER 2, continuing the gory misadventures of Art the Clown, MIDNIGHT PEEPSHOW, a twisted portmanteau threesome exploring the nightmare side of psychosexual fantasy, horror anthology sequel SCARE PACKAGE II: RAD CHAD’S REVENGE, Andy Mitton’s menacing supernatural horror, THE HARBINGER, Erik Bloomquist’s coming-of-age horror SHE CAME FROM THE WOODS, starring Cara Buono and stylish psychological chiller MASTEMAH from director Didier Daarwin, who will be attending. Also attending is THE CHAMBER director Ben Parker, for his latest thriller BURIAL. He will be bringing along the cast, including Tom Felton,

The Visitor From The Future

The documentary strand is as bright and bold as ever and FrightFest welcomes French cult icon Brigitte Lahaie, who will introduce the fascinating in-depth Jean Rollin documentary ORCHESTRATOR OF STORMS. The subversive and explicit is also explored in CULT OF VHS, which takes a trip down Memorex lane to nostalgically relive the allure and passion for straight to video titles and yes, those Video Nasties. Another cult favourite is Chucky, who is the subject of Kyra Gardner’s LIVING WITH CHUCKY. Kyra, daughter of FX designer Tony Gardner, explores what it was like growing up amongst this creative family of stars, eccentrics, technicians and a serial killing doll.

Terrifier 2

Blood-thirsty hounds, rampaging reptiles, a teacher-eating pupil and a gore-filled talent show…Brit horror hits a bloody sartorial vein this year with the World premiere of HOUNDED, starring Samantha Bond and Larry Lamb, Liam Regan’s EATING MISS CAMPBELL, Pat Higgins’ POWERTOOL CHEERLEADERS VS. THE BOYBAND OF THE SCREECHING DEAD and Paul W. Franklyn’s CROC!  Also, there are outings for Paul Wilkins’ THE GHOST WRITER, Steve Johnson’s STALKER, and Christopher Hatton’s RAVEN’S HOLLOW.

Epstein’s spoof documentary and END ZONE sequel in a double bill that is simply fake GRINDHOUSE heaven.

FrightFest was one of the first festivals to focus on the fresh and delightful work of Austin-based director Emily Hagins when it premiered MY SUCKY TEEN ROMANCE in 2011. Now she’s back big time with SORRY ABOUT THE DEMON, a supernatural horror comedy that is movingly funny. Having always embraced dedicated genre directors returning with new films we also welcome back Patrick Rea with his haunting domestic abuse chiller THEY WAIT IN THE DARK, Eric Pennycoff with THE LEECH, starring FrightFest favourite Graham Skipper, BUTTBOY’s Tyler Cornack with TINY CINEMA, a weird, fun and twisted look at humanity, and Alexis Bruchon with THE EYES BELOW, the second in his noir trilogy following THE WOMAN WITH LEOPARD SHOES,
