Also in June, you can take a deep dive into some sensationally gripping TV shows, including three seasons of the political drama BORGEN. From the makers of The Killing, the series is centred around the increasingly tangled life of Birgitte Nyborg, Denmark’s Prime Minister; and SPRING TIDE Season 2, starring Julia Ragnarsson (Midsommar, Wallander), the brilliant murder mystery series about two killings that might be connected, that draws you in and won’t let go.

The YEARS OF LEAD collection features a series of brutal 1970s Italian crime thrillers tapping into the atmosphere of violence and instability that defined the era, including Colt 38 Special Squad, Like Rabid Dogs, Savage Three, Highway Racer, No, and The Case Is Happily Resolved.

John Boyega returns for ATTACK THE BLOCK 2 - In Development now!

STUDIOCANAL, Film4, Complete Fiction Pictures & UpperRoom Productions have announced they are in early development on ATTACK THE BLOCK 2.

In this, the 10th anniversary year of sci-fi cult classic ATTACK THE BLOCK, STUDIOCANAL & Film4 confirm that Nira Park, Joe Cornish, John Boyega & James Wilson have reunited to develop and produce the highly anticipated second film. Cornish will write and direct with John Boyega returning to star as Moses.  Details about the plot are currently being kept under wraps.

Joe Cornish comments “I’m thrilled we’re officially announcing our return to the world of ‘Attack The Block’ on the tenth anniversary of the film’s release. I can’t wait to work alongside John again, bringing audiences an even bigger slice of inner-city alien action."

The 2011 film featured an ensemble of relatively new, then unknown, actors, including Boyega who has quickly become one of today’s most sought-after young actors.  He has since gone on to star in several films and most recently earned a Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award for his performance in Steve McQueen’s anthology film series Small Axe for BBC/Amazon Prime. Additional cast in the original included Alex Esmail, Danielle Vitalis, Leeon Jones, Franz Drameh, and Simon Howard.  It also starred Jodie Whittaker, Luke Treadaway, and Nick Frost.

John Boyega expands “It’s been a decade since Attack The Block was released and so much has changed since then. I’m excited to see this heightened story return to the streets of London. Moses has remained one of my favourite characters to play and bringing him back is a huge honour.”

Prior to its release, ATTACK THE BLOCK received the Audience Award at both SXSW and Los Angeles Film Festival and instantly became a favourite of fans and critics – it currently holds a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes and has gone on to earn its place as a true cult film.

ATTACK THE BLOCK 2 will be produced by Nira Park and Joe Cornish through Complete Fiction Pictures, the production company recently formed by Park, Cornish, and filmmaker Edgar Wright. John Boyega will produce through UpperRoom Productions.

MAYHEM FILM FESTIVAL to return to Broadway, Nottingham on 14-17 October

Mayhem Film Festival will return this autumn to showcase the best in international horror, sci-fi and cult cinema, with the festival’s 17th edition planned to run for four days from 14-17 October.

After last year hosting a slimmed-down ‘Skeleton Edition’ of the festival due to restrictions caused by the pandemic, organisers are hoping to move back towards the full flesh of the festival’s traditional form for this year’s edition, though the precise structure of the festival will remain responsive to events and any restrictions which may be in place in the autumn.

“We are very much hoping to return to a full festival at our home venue of Broadway in Nottingham, because nothing beats the full experience, but we are aware things are still evolving. Our main priority is for everyone, audiences and staff, to enjoy films in a safe environment so we’re encouraging you to save the dates, but don’t make plans to travel just yet. We’ll continue to work with our friends at Broadway and follow government guidance in the next few months and hope to announce our exact plans in the early summer”, says the team.

On the festival’s return, Broadway’s Marketing Director Stewart Terry says: “We’re so excited to host Mayhem once again and we hope to do so in all its gory glory. The festival always brings people together at Broadway and we can’t wait for them to not only enjoy some of the most exciting films from across the world, but also experience our refurbed venue.”

In addition to announcing their 2021 dates, Mayhem Film Festival is also excited to open their call for short films for this year’s edition. Over the years, Mayhem grew from a single short film programme to a four-day event, but its shorts programme remains at the heart of every edition. Mayhem Film Festival are looking for horror, sci-fi and cult short films, produced after 1 January 2020 and that are under 22-minute long.

More information on how to submit films is available at...
https://filmfreeway.com/MayhemFilmFestival

In previous years, Mayhem has welcomed many filmmakers from around the world such as Gareth Edwards (Godzilla, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) for Monsters, Mark Gatiss (The League of Gentlemen, Sherlock) for a special masterclass, Ben Wheatley for a preview screening of Sightseers, Nicolas Roeg for a special screening of Don’t Look Now at St Mary’s Church in Nottingham, and cult Canadian collective, Astron-6 for The Editor and The Void

Mayhem Film Festival has also hosted special events such as screenings with specially-commissioned live scores from 8MM Orchestra, two exclusive live stage reading of unmade Hammer Films screenplays, The Unquenchable Thirst of Dracula in 2015 and Zeppelin V. Pterodactyls in 2017, and a live performance of Tales of HP Lovecraft by The Duke St Workshop featuring British actor Laurence R. Harvey.

Planning is currently underway for Mayhem Film Festival’s 17th edition with more information and announcements coming soon.

Mayhem Film Festival will take place at Broadway, Nottingham on 14 – 17 October 2021.

TETROVIDEO RELEASES

NIGHTMARE SYMPHONY, (Italy - 2020) by Domiziano Cristopharo and Daniele Trani

Nightmare Symphony is a giallo horror film co-directed by Domiziano Cristopharo (House of Flesh Mannequins, Red Krokodil) and Daniele Trani (DOP in “Across the River”).

Produced by Ulkurzu and HH Kosova and written by the well-known italian screenwriter Antonio Tentori (Nightmare Concert, Dracula 3D), Nightmare Symphony is a tribute to Lucio Fulci’s Nightmare Concert/A Cat in the Brain, in which Fulci himself played a tortured horror filmmaker haunted by his own bloody horror film visions.

In Nightmare Symphony, the filmmaker at the center of the story is played by Lady in White director Frank Laloggia: he is a horror director who is struggling to complete his movie, while a series of gruesome murders happen all around him. Eventually he will be forced to face his worst and scariest nightmares.

The film also stars Antonella Salvucci (The Torturer), Antonio Tentori, Poison Rouge (AGP: Sacrifice), Pietro Cinieri, Irene Baruffetti, Edi Hasan Lushi, Halil Budakova and Merita Budakova (Virus: Extreme Contamination)

The practical effects are by Jacopo Tomassini (The Obsessed). The soundtrack is by Antony Coia (House of Flesh Mannequins) and includes the original main theme by the legendary italian composer Fabio Frizzi (City of the Living Dead, The Beyond).

THE BAD MAN (USA - 2018) by Scott Schirmer

Written and directed by Scott Schirmer (Harvest Lake, Plank Face), The Bad Man is a disturbing tale starring Jason Crowe, Ellie Church, Arthur Cullipher and Dave Parker.

The film follows young couple Mary (Ellie Church) and PJ (Jason Crowe) who are continuously drugged, humiliated and abused by a sadistic clown bent on transforming them into a “doll” and a “dog”, submissive sex slaves to be sold to the highest bidders.

Synopsis: PJ and Mary take over an isolated Bed&Breakfast that was previously owned by her departed grandmother.  Not long after arriving there, a stranger (Arthur Cullipher) knocks on the door seeking accommodations but instead of explaining that the B&B is closed, they allow him because he is very charming. Things take a bizarre turn when they discover that their house guest now donning clown paint (Cullipher) is a flesh peddler that kidnaps people and breaks them into being obedient slaves each with a different task and service.

Produced by Bandit Motion Pictures, The Bad Man stars Ellie Church (Frankenstein Created Bikers), Jason Crowe (Harvest Lake), Arthur Cullipher (Found, The Legend of Wasco), Dave Parker (Headless, Plank Face) and Alyss Winkler (Amazon Hot Box).

DEBRIS DOCUMENTAR (Germany - 2012) by Marian Dora

Directed by Marian Dora (Cannibal, Carcinoma), the atrocious Debris Documentar was originally made in 2003. The film, released on DVD only in 2014 as part of a boxset also containing Melancholie der Engel and Voyage To Agatis, deals with the everyday life of a man, Carsten (Carsten Frank), who works on the set of the 2004 Ulli Lommel film Zombie Nation and who is planning to realize his own film: a task he finds extremely difficult.

Everything seems normal but in reality, he is a frustrated and perverted man who indulges in several disturbing sexual fetishes including unspeakable acts in his private life. His perversion will push him to take his horrible fantasies out of his home to the outside world.

In Debris Documentar Carsten Frank also stays in contact with the spanish filmmaker Jesús Franco (Vampiros Lesbos), the german actress Katja Bienert (El tesoro de la diosa blanca), the italian actor Peter Martell (Death Walks at Midnight) and the American actor David Hess (The Last House on the Left).

Debris Documentar Bonus Features: Opus Hominis 2 (short); Es geschah in Gotha (short); Carnophage (short); Photogallery; Original trailer.

Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium streamer for horror, thriller and the supernatural, announced today its “Summer of Chills” UK and Irish slate of 13 new original and exclusive films for June, July and August, including the anticipated debut of landmark horror director George A. Romero’s legendary “lost” film The Amusement Park on 8 June.

The robust summer lineup kicks off with Caveat, an eerie, slow-building, cat-and-mouse thriller, and continues with such marquee films as sci-fi thriller Possessor starring Andrea Riseborough; The Boy Behind the Door, Justin Powell and David Charbonier’s directorial debut; Jakob’s Wife, starring horror icon Barbara Crampton; Cody Calahan’s comedy horror Vicious Fun; and Kandisha, the long awaited new supernatural shocker from the French directing duo of Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo, best known for their influential debut feature, Inside, as well as their more recent films Livid and Among the Living, among others.

“SHUDDER’S “SUMMER OF CHILLS” FULL SLATE LISTED BELOW
(IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER):

CAVEAT – Premieres 3 June **A Shudder Original Film

Lone drifter Isaac accepts a job to look after his landlord's niece, Olga, for a few days in an isolated house on a remote island. It seems like easy money, but there’s a catch: he must wear a leather harness and chain that restricts his movements to certain rooms. Once Olga's uncle, Barrett leaves the two of them alone, a game of cat and mouse ensues as Olga displays increasingly erratic behaviour as a trapped Isaac makes a series of horrific discoveries in the house. Directed by Damien Mc Carthy. Starring Jonathan French, Leila Sykes and Ben Caplan.

THE AMUSEMENT PARK – Premieres 8 June **A Shudder Exclusive Film

Recently discovered and restored 46 years after its completion by the George A. Romero Foundation and produced by Suzanne Desrocher-Romero, The Amusement Park stars Martin’s Lincoln Maazel as an elderly man who finds himself disoriented and increasingly isolated as the pains, tragedies and humiliations of aging in America are manifested through roller coasters and chaotic crowds. Commissioned by the Lutheran Society, the film is perhaps Romero’s wildest and most imaginative movie, an allegory about the nightmarish realities of growing older, and is an alluring snapshot of the filmmaker's early artistic capacity and style and would go on to inform his ensuing filmography. The “lost” film was restored in 4k by IndieCollect in New York City.

POSSESSOR – Premieres 10 June **A Shudder Exclusive Film

From the visionary mind of Brandon Cronenberg (Antiviral), Possessor is a game-changing sci-fi thriller about elite, corporate assassin Tasya Vos. Using brain-implant technology, Vos takes control of other people’s bodies to execute high profile targets. As she sinks deeper into her latest assignment, Vos becomes trapped inside a mind that threatens to obliterate her. Written and directed by Brandon Cronenberg. Starring Andrea Riseborough, Christopher Abbott, Rossif Sutherland, Tuppence Middleton, Sean Bean and Jennifer Jason Leigh.

SUPERDEEP – Premieres 17 June **A Shudder Original Film

The Kola Superdeep borehole is the largest Russian secret facility. In 1984, at the depth of more than 7 miles below the surface, unexplained sounds were recorded, resembling the screams and moans of numerous people. Since these events, the object has been closed. A small research team of scientists and military personnel go down below the surface to find the secret hidden these many decades. What they discover will pose the greatest threat humanity has ever faced. Directed by Arseniy Sukhin. Starring Milena Radulovic, Sergey Ivanyuk, Nikolay Kovbas, Kirill Kovbas and Nikita Dyuvbanov.

AN UNQUIET GRAVE – Premieres 24 June **A Shudder Original Film

A year after losing his wife in a car crash, Jamie convinces her sister, Ava, to return with him to the site of the accident and help him perform a strange ritual. But as the night wears on, it becomes clear that he has darker intentions. An Unquiet Grave is an exploration of grief, and the harm we cause when we don’t take responsibility for our own healing. Directed by Terrence Krey. Starring Jacon A. Ware and Christine Nyland who also co-wrote the film.

VICIOUS FUN – Premieres 29 June **A Shudder Original Film

Joel, a caustic 1980’s film critic for a national horror magazine, finds himself unwittingly trapped in a self-help group for serial killers. THRESHOLD - Blu-ray 5 July

When a phone call from out of the blue brings Leo (Joey Millin) back into contact with his sister, Virginia (Madison West), long estranged from her family due to years of drug abuse, he arrives to find her alone in a bare apartment in the midst of an apparent overdose. After the convulsions and nausea subside, Virginia insists to Leo that she has been clean for 8 months due to the help of a mysterious group. She confides to her cynical brother that her edginess and paranoia actually stem from a sinister ritual conducted by the group that took her in at her lowest and eventually revealed themselves to be a cult. This curse bound her emotions and physical sensations to a man she has never met before.

With his marriage on the rocks, Leo has his own demons to face. Nonetheless, he is reluctantly persuaded by Virginia to embark on a cross-country road trip to track down this shadowy stranger under the caveat that if he's nowhere to be found and it's all in her head, she'll go to rehab. However, as their date with destiny draws nearer, Leo begins to suspect his sister’s tall tale might have some substance.

Threshold, the second feature from co-directors Powell Robinson and Patrick R Young, following their debut Bastard (2015), was improvised and shot on two iPhones over the course of a 12-day road trip with a crew of just three. The result is an inventive and compelling psychological thriller with hints of the supernatural that recalls such indie cult classics as Ben Wheatley’s Kill List (2011) and Justin Benson And Aaron Moorhead’s Resolution (2013).

THE CAT O’ NINE TAILS - Limited Edition 4K UHD Blu-ray

Following the success of his debut feature, The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, distributor Titanus tasked writer/director Dario Argento with delivering a follow-up in short order. The resulting film, granted a greatly enhanced budget and heralded in its US marketing campaign as “nine times more suspenseful” than its predecessor, was The Cat O’ Nine Tails.

When a break-in occurs at a secretive genetics institute, blind puzzle-maker Franco Arnò (Karl Malden, Patton, One-Eyed Jacks), who overheard an attempt to blackmail one of the institute’s scientists shortly before the robbery, teams up with intrepid reporter Carlo Giordani (James Franciscus, Beneath the Planet of the Apes) to crack the case. But before long the bodies begin to pile up and the two amateur sleuths find their own lives imperilled in their search for the truth. And worse still, Lori (Cinzia De Carolis, Cannibal Apocalypse), Franco’s young niece, may also be in killer’s sights…

This second entry in the so-called “Animal Trilogy” found Argento further refining his distinctive style and cementing his reputation as the master of the giallo thriller. Co-starring Catherine Spaak (Il Sorpasso) and Rada Rassimov (Baron Blood), and featuring another nerve-jangling score by the great Ennio Morricone (The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Good, The Bad and the Ugly), The Cat O’ Nine Tails remains one of Argento’s most suspenseful and underrated films.

W4Free adds genre cult movies to growing slate

Rampaging Cuban zombies, deadly Aussie sheep, a gun-slinging Wesley Snipes, sinister cult mind games and the ultimate battle-of-the-sexes thriler…stand by for some classic cult favourites on W4Free, the UK’s AVOD destination for independent and cult cinema.

With its cheesy title and cheerful mix of politics and splatter, JUAN OF THE DEAD, struck a cord with audiences wortldwide. Cuba’s first zombie horror film, it was released in 2011 and is already acknowldged as a modern genre classic. The zombie allegory is also alive and well in New Zealand’s BLACK SHEEP, an hilariously gory affair in the ‘Bad Taste’ tradition of Peter Jackson. Packed with every possible sheep-shagging joke, the cult sensation from New Zealand is a ‘shear’ delight.

The undead also come back to life in GALLOWWALKERS, Andrew Goth’s notorious and disaster beset cowboy zombie action mix of Sergio Leone’s Spaghetti Westerns and Alejandro Jodorowsky’s mystical classic El Topo. Wesley Snipes plays a cursed gunfighter attempting to allude justice, so prepare for a fistful of corpses.

FAULTS is a subversive, psychologically disturbing black comedy which marked the feature film debut of director/writer Riley Stearns, who cleverly employed the considerable talents of his wife, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, to play Claire – a young woman who appears to be under the grip of a mysterious new cult.  Finally, Katie Aselton’s BLACK ROCK, described as a ‘feminist ‘Deliverence’, pits Katie Aselton, Lake Bell and Kate Bosworth against a trio of misogynistic war vets.

Also available to stream this month is THE NOTORIOUS BETTIE PAGE, director Mary Harron’s portrayal of 1950s legendary pinup and bondage model Bettie Page, portrayed brilliantly by Gretchen Mol.

Plus there is Jim Jarmusch’s absorbing anthology COFFEE AND CIGARETTES, featuring among others, Bill Murray, Iggy Pop, Tom Waits and Jack and Meg White of the White Stripes.

W4Free, the nation’s latest film streaming service, which also provides TV series and documentaries, can be accessed on laptops, PCs and via Netgem TV. Later in the year it will be available on all mobile devices and connected TV’s.

The group behind the service, Philipp Rotermund’s Video Solutions AG, provides a range of AVOD and SVOD brands in Europe, including Watch4, available in Germany, Switzerland and Austria with a reach of 10 million people per month.

CAVEAT - Streaming on SHUDDER 3rd JUNE

SHUDDER, the premium streaming service for horror, thrillers and the supernatural, is delighted to announce that Damian Mc Carthy’s feature debut, the unnerving cat and mouse thriller CAVEAT, will be released exclusively on SHUDDER from 3 June 2021.

Lone drifter Isaac (Jonathan French - A Soldier’s Voice) accepts a job to look after his landlord's niece, Olga (Leila Sykes - Missing Something), for a few days in an isolated house on a remote island. It seems like easy money, but there’s a catch: he must wear a leather harness and chain that restricts his movements to certain rooms.

Once Olga's uncle, Barrett (Ben Caplan - Band of Brothers, Call the Midwife) leaves the two of them alone, a game of cat and mouse ensues as Olga displays increasingly erratic behaviour as a trapped Isaac makes a series of horrific discoveries in the house.

With slow building tension, CAVEAT balances creepy interiors with the beauty of Cork’s countryside to stunning visual effect. Playing out like a thoughtful, long-lost 80s chiller, CAVEAT leads the audience on a path of twist and turns to an unforgettable resolution.

Filmed in Cork, Ireland, CAVEAT is Writer/Director Damian McCarthy’s feature debut following a string of successful short horror films and was produced by Justin Hyne of HyneSight Films, with cinematography by Kieran Fitzgerald. The film’s music was composed by Richard G. Mitchell.

CAVEAT arrives on SHUDDER on 3 June 2021
