THE HOLE IN THE GROUND arrives on UK Disc & Digital July

Something nasty is lurking in the forest in what might be the most frightening film of the year, a nerve-jangling mix of The Witch and Hereditary, from a formidable first time director.

Sarah moves her precocious son Chris to a secluded new home in a rural town, trying to ease his apprehensions as they hope for a fresh start after a difficult past. But after a startling encounter with a mysterious new neighbour, Sarah’s nerves are set on edge.

Chris disappears in the night into the forest behind their house, and Sarah discovers an ominous, gaping sinkhole while searching for him. Though he returns, some disturbing behavioural changes emerge, and Sarah begins to worry that the boy who came back is not her son

A bold and brilliantly constructed cross between Pet Sematary and Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the debut feature from writer-director Lee Cronin is a genre game changer that masterfully builds the tension, delivers the frights and leaves the audience reeling.

THE HOLE arrives on UK BD, DVD and on Digital July 8th from Vertigo.

FrightFest 2019 announces opening and closing night films

Ant Timpson’s COME TO DADDY and Abner Pastoll’s A GOOD WOMAN IS HARD TO FIND bookend FrightFest’s 20th edition.

This year’s festival opens with the UK premiere of Ant Timpson’s deviously edgy stunner COME TO DADDY, starring Elijah Wood, Stephen McHattie, Martin Donovan and Michael Smiley.

Written by THE GREASY STRANGLER co-writer Toby Harvard (based on an idea by Timpson), Elijah Wood puts in a career best performance as thirty-something Norval, who receives an out-of-the-blue invitation to visit his perpetually uncaring dad, As his father’s growing animosity towards him reaches a dark fever pitch. this hilarious, inventively gross, core-shocking adventure moves smartly towards its uncompromising and unexpected finale.

The festival reaches its bloody conclusion with the world premiere of Abner Pastoll’s A GOOD WOMAN IS HARD TO FIND, a superbly crafted Belfast-based crime story. It showcases a tour-de-force performance by Sarah Bolger, who plays a recently widowed mother of two desperate to know who murdered her husband in front of their young son, rendering him mute. Coerced into helping low-life drug-dealer Tito (Andrew Simpson from ROAD GAMES) stash narcotics stolen from the local Mr. Big, she’s forced into taking drastic action to protect her children while learning the awful truth about her spouse.

Co-director Alan Jones commented: “FrightFest's 20th year celebration year is all about honouring our past while looking towards an exciting future for the genre. Our opening attraction marks the debut feature of someone we have grown up with; producer Ant Timpson, who has consistently provided top notch fantasy fare throughout our formative two decades. Our world premiere closer is Abner Pastoll's dark and dazzling thriller ‘A Good Woman Is Hard To Find’. Pastoll impressed with his previous FrightFest entry ‘Road Games/ and is now set to expand his mainstream appeal big time. Past friends, present family and future frights - that's FrightFest 2019.”

Arrow Video FrightFest, the UK’s biggest genre film festival, runs from Thursday 22 August to Monday 26 August at the Empire Cinema, Leicester Square and the Prince Charles Cinema. MEMORY: THE ORIGINS OF ALIEN - in cinemas August

The iconic scenes and sequences from seminal sci-fi horror ALIEN are firmly embedded in film history and popular culture: the creepy eggs and HR Giger designed spacecraft on a long dead planet; the pivotal facehugger attaching itself to one of the crew of the Nostromo; the shocking chest-bursting sequence and much, much more…

But while we may all now know that "in space, no-one can hear you scream", how did Ridley Scott and the creative team come up with the ideas for a blockbuster that changed both the horror and sci-fi genres and truly terrified audiences around the world?

As we approach the 40th Anniversary of the game-changing film a fascinating feature documentary MEMORY: THE ORIGINS OF ALIEN, from writer/director Alexandre O. Philippe (78/52: Hitchcock’s Shower Scene), uncovers the origin story behind Scott’s cinematic masterpiece.

A contemplation on the symbiotic collaborative process of moviemaking, the power of myth, and the collective unconscious, MEMORY unearths the largely untold beginnings of a movie-masterwork rooted in Greek and Egyptian mythology, underground comics, the art of Francis Bacon, and the dark visions of Dan O’Bannon and H.R. Giger.

It reveals a veritable treasure trove of never-before-seen materials from the O’Bannon and Giger estates, including original story notes, rejected designs and storyboards, exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, and most importantly Dan O’Bannon’s original 29-page script from 1971, titled MEMORY.

MEMORY: THE ORIGINS OF ALIEN arrives in cinemas 30th August followed by DVD and on demand 2nd September from Dogwoof.

Graham Humphreys reveals poster for upcoming horror "Seepers: A Love Story"

Artist Graham Humphreys has revealed his latest piece, a stunning new poster for upcoming horror film "Seepers: A Love Story"

Having created some of the most iconic posters in horror history including 'Return of the Living Dead', 'The Evil Dead', 'Inferno', 'Phenomena' and 'The Stuff', Graham's work for director Melanie Gourlay's latest trash masterpiece fits right along side those classics.

In "Seepers: A Love Story" we follow the story of two rival methane farms illegally extracting bio-fuel from their hapless kidnap victims. Ruthless corporate espionage turns into an unexpected love story taking detours through gross-out comedy, musical sequences, action, kidnapping, horror, crazed experiments, exercise videos and too many bodily functions to list. Seepers is a punk rock fuelled slice of gonzo weirdness with a just a little heart running through it.

Available exclusively through the Kickstarter campaign, the poster will be signed by the artist himself but only for the first 10 backers. Once they're gone, clean prints will be available. Make sure to check out the many rewards up for grabs and support independent horror by following the links below.

The FrightFest Guide to Werewolf Movies - Coming this August

FrightFest and FAB Press once again join forces to launch THE FRIGHTFEST GUIDE TO WEREWOLF MOVIES, which goes exclusively on sale during Arrow Video FrightFest 2019, Aug 22 – Aug 27. Both the author Gavin Baddeley and filmmaker Neil Marshall, who wrote the foreword, will be present to sign copies.

Following the success of the three previous editions: The FrightFest Guide to Exploitation Movies, Monster Movies & last year’s Ghost Movies, this is the latest in a series of wide appeal books for both the curious spectator and the cult connoisseur.

For more than a century, a diverse pack of lycanthropes have memorably manifested onto our screens, in many hair-raising shapes and sizes. Within these colourful pages we will encounter reluctant wolfmen, shapeshifting sadists, Nazi werewolves, werewolf nuns, big bad fairytale wolves and lycanthropic nymphomaniacs.

Acclaimed author, broadcaster and occult historian, Gavin Baddeley, finds fresh perspectives on established classics, uncovers neglected gems, and even examines a few howlers among the two hundred-odd werewolf movies reviewed. In the process Baddeley shows how the myth has transformed; whereby werewolves become analogies for alcoholism or adolescence, or ciphers for sexual awakening or serial murder.

Gavin said today: “I was flattered to be asked - I'm among pretty distinguished company with the other FrightFest Guide authors and contributors - and it seemed an ideal opportunity to explore why I've been so fascinated by werewolves since childhood, As a lifelong lycanthropy obsessive, an excuse to watch hundreds of werewolf films under the pretext of work was always going to be impossible to resist!

Renowned director, writer and producer Neil Marshall – whose brilliant debut Dog Soldiers reinvigorated the werewolf for the 21st Century – contributes the foreword.

The official launch of the book is at Arrow Video FrightFest, with official signings taking place at Cineworld, Leicester Square (22 to 27 August). Both Gavin and Neil will be in attendance. The FrightFest exclusive hardcover will be on sale for just £20 from www.fabpress.com

The book's international street date is 1 October 2019. Paperback price: UK £17.99 / US $26.95

FrightFest wants fresh blood!

Arrow Video FrightFest, in conjunction with UK distribution outfit Blue Finch Films and short film funding company Genera, has launched a new initiative to help finance genre short films

Called ‘Fresh Blood’, the partners will look to help finance short form projects in the latter stages of development in the bid to discover new voices in the world of genre filmmaking.

Submissions for the fund will start on the 5th June 2019 and filmmakers can apply at www.generafilms.com. The closing date is 31st July and the shortlisted finalists will be announced on 14th August.

Shortlisted finalists will then have the opportunity to pitch their project in front of an industry panel during the festival, who will then decide the winning film.

This year will be the festival’s 20th edition, with their full line-up to be announced on Thurs 4th July.

Genera’s CEO, Christian Parton commented: “Short films are notoriously hard to fund. Partnering and creating exciting opportunities to support short filmmakers is paramount to Genera. We are incredibly excited to be partnering with FrightFest and Blue Finch Films in launching this round to encourage the financing of more genre films”

Ian Rattray, FrightFest co-director, added: “We’re thrilled to join forces with these two dynamic companies to help continue the festival’s tradition of seeking out and supporting fresh talent”.

THE LAST MUTATION OF CHRIST - Kickstarter Appeal.

JESUS IS BACK, BUT THIS TIME, HE’S A MUTANT - A NEW HORROR-COMEDY-WESTERN DEBUTS A KICKSTARTER CAMPAIGN

Byron Wilhelm von Belgerstein announces a just-launched Kickstarter campaign for his next feature film, The Last Mutation of Christ. The film follows a simple premise: what if, instead of dying for the sins of mankind, Jesus instead fell into a vat of toxic waste? He becomes a mutant killer out to conquer the world; Pontius Pilate subdues him, but Jesus reawakens in an 1880s Old West town. Soon, the only ones who can stop him from taking over the world are a local schoolmarm and a hired assassin.

The Kickstarter campaign features exclusive rewards that will not be available anywhere else; they include special edition Blu-rays/DVDs, the ability to choose certain elements that will appear in the film, and a custom Old West-style wanted poster.

This is a movie filled with horror, action, comedy, adventure, and some great kills. It will be reminiscent of low-budget horror movies such as The Toxic Avenger, Birdemic, and The Passion of the Christ.

The film is aimed especially at fans of low-budget genre pictures, such as Troma films, Kung Fury, and the like; but it will also have elements reminiscent of higher budget work, such as The Ballad of Buster Scruggs and the John Wick franchise.

The details of Byron Wilhelm von Belgerstein’s life are sketchy at best. Many have wondered if he even is, in fact, a real person. In response to an inquiry about his biography, he stated, “They do not care who I am or what my background is; they only care about Jesus.”

OLDBOY – On DVD, Blu-ray and Ltd Ed 3-Disc Blu-ray from Arrow - 26 Aug

LIMITED EDITION THREE-DISC SET: OLDBOY + OLD DAYS + THREE HOURS OF INTERVIEWS

Often cited as one of the best films of the 2000s and possibly the definitive example of extreme Asian cinema, Oldboy is a brutal, lyrical modern classic of the revenge genre.

Based on the Japanese manga of the same name, the film tells the horrific tale of Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik), a businessman who is inexplicably kidnapped and imprisoned in a grim hotel room-like cell for 15 years, without knowing his captor or the reason for his incarceration. Eventually released, he learns of his wife’s murder and embarks on a quest for revenge whilst also striking up a romance with a young, attractive sushi chef, Mi-do (Kang Hye-jung).
He eventually finds his tormentor, but their final encounter will yield yet more unimaginable horrors...

Directed with immense flair by Park Chan-wook (The Handmaiden) as the second instalment of his Vengeance Trilogy, Oldboy blazed a trail at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival where it was lauded by the President of the Jury, director Quentin Tarantino. The film went on to become a huge international smash, blowing audiences minds with its concoction of filmmaking virtuosity, ingenious plotting, violence and pathos. Now, this masterpiece has been newly mastered in 4K and is presented here in a three-disc set with a massive array of extras including the feature-length documentary Old Days, and three hours of bonus interviews.
