Oblivion Trailer

Not strictly Horror, but this trailer for the film "Oblivion" starring Tom Cruise looks kind of interesting...

The film is released to UK cinemas April 12th 2012.

The Horror Channel (UK) to screen "Cronenberg" season.

This January, The Horror Channel will be showcasing three of David Cronenberg’s most defining films with a season that can’t fail to shock and awaken the senses. SHIVERS, RABID and THE DEAD ZONE all receive their Horror Channel premieres, exclusively introduced by top horror directors Simon Rumley (Red White & Blue), Sean Hogan (The Devil’s Playground) and Pascal Laugier (Martyrs).

Sat Jan 12 @ 22:55
The season kicks off with the premiere of SHIVERS (1975), Cronenberg’s debut full-length feature that helped coined the phrase ‘Body Horror’. The infectious plot sees a parasite enter the bodies of people living in a Montreal apartment block and consequently turns them into libido driven, sex mad zombies. Clearly a fan of the genre, Cronenberg cast the unforgettable Hammer Horror siren Barbara Steele in what was to become one of the most iconic scenes in the film.

Sat Jan 19 @ 22.55
Next up is the premiere of RABID (1977) in which Cronenberg is once again flirting with the themes of strange science and even stranger sex in this blood-lusty follow up to Shivers. This time a young woman becomes a test subject for an experimental skin graft when she survives a horrific motorbike crash – but her new skin demands feeding…Starring Marilyn Chambers, this is Cronenberg’s twisted take on the Vampire genre.

Sat Jan 26 @ 22.55
Last in the season is THE DEAD ZONE (1983), in which Cronenberg teamed up with Stephen King when he adapted his novel THE DEAD ZONE. Filmed during a relentless deep freeze in Southern Ontario, this horror thriller stars Christopher Walken. As Johnny Smith – a man who wakes from a coma to find he’s lost five years of his life but gained psychic powers to foresee the future – something of a gift that soon becomes a curse.

The Horror Channel is available on Sky 319 / Virgin 149 / Freesat 138

Swedish horror "Mara" coming to DVD in the US and Sweden.

Filmkoncept Scandinavia is proud to announce that the Swedish horror-thriller "Mara" will premiere on DVD and VOD in Sweden from Njutafilms on January 16. Among the bonus features on the domestic release are a Making Of featurette and interviews with star Angelica Jansson.

The film will then be released in the U.S. and Canada during spring 2013, distributed by MVD Entertainment Group. The material from the Swedish release is expected to be ported over for the US release.

Making her feature film acting debut, popular Swedish Glamour model Angelica Jansson stars as Jenny, who as a young girl witnessed a brutal, gruesome murder by an insane woman. A violent act that has forever scarred her.

Deciding to confront her past, Jenny, who's now an adult, returns to the scene where the murder was committed: a picturesque but secluded house in the woods, along with some friends.

But what was supposed to be a relaxing weekend in the countryside becomes a blood-soaked nightmare when it turns out that the group aren't alone...

Nothing is as it seems in the psychological horror-thriller "Mara", the first production from Filmkoncept Scandinavia. The film was written, produced and directed by Fredrik Hedberg, Ake Gustafsson and Jacob Kondrup; the founders of Filmkoncept Scandinavia.

"Mara" uses a deliberately slow building style and plot twists, were nothing is what it seems, is partly inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho". Hitchcock aside, the gloomy feel and moody look of the film draws on more contemporary inspiration from the likes of John Carpenter and others. The movie was shot on location near Kristianstad, southern Sweden.

The Eschatrilogy - A Film Review!

Earlier this year whilst attending the “Day of the Undead” festival in Leicester, I caught a screening of Damien Mortar’s indie zombie film “The Eschatrilogy”. Having given the film an overall favourable review in my Festival report video (which you can see HERE), I was subsequently contacted by the director who was kind enough to send me a screener copy to review.

The movie is essentially an anthology film, about 3 separate tales which take place during a zombie outbreak. It starts with a lone survivor at some make-shift survivalist camp, who comes across a mysterious stranger that has collapsed at the front gate. Taking him inside, he discovers the stranger’s journal, which documents the many horrors he has seen during the ensuing Zombie apocalypse.

As he reads from it, we are treated to a series of 3 tales, which are all connected by the films central theme. The first, entitled “Dead Inside” which shows the start of the outbreak, deals with a young mother and her daughter battling to keep her recently zombiefied husband out of the family home.

The second, “Dying Breed”, which takes place the following day with the outbreak in full swing, follows a young lad named Alex who has to fight his way cross country as he tries to make it to his parents house, to see if they’re OK. Whilst the final film, “Father for the Dead”, which seems to be set several days after, shows just how far a parent will go to protect their child from harm, whether it be from the walking dead, or other groups of marauding survivors.

Filmed in and around the suburbs of Sheffield and Barnsley on a budget of £5000 (according to the IMDB), and made up of predominantly first-time actors, when I first came to view this I wasn’t too sure whether I would like it. But as the film got going I was actually pleasantly surprised.

The anthology style of the film was rather reminiscent of those old Amicus films from the 60’s and 70s, but updated to a modern day setting. Indeed the director admitted that “Tales from the Crypt” was an influence during production.

Now obviously, the film is very low budget, so its no “Dawn of the Dead” to be sure, but for what it is, I felt that it was rather good. It was competently shot, there was some nice gore in it and was quite impressed how the director managed to pull off the scenes with the desolate housing estates given its budget.

OK, so some of the acting and zombie make up was a little bit ropey in places. The survivalist camp looked like it was filmed at a paintball centre (IT WAS), the demon character at the start, kinda looked like one of Rob Zombies stage costumes and the audience seemed to find some scenes inappropriately funny.

But bearing in mind the films low budget nature, you can’t compare this to a mainstream Hollywood film and there are films out there with much larger budgets which aren’t even half as good (the god awful Zombie Diaries springing immediately to mind).

So overall, I found this to be quite an enjoyable low budget movie, which zombie film fans should find entertaining. Damien Morter also directed the 2011 film “Bicycle Day”, so if you’re familiar with that, you might want to check this one out too.

The film is currently doing the rounds at various film festivals, and the producers are hoping to secure a distribution deal in the new year.

The Day - UK DVD review

Recently had the opportunity to see the new post-apocalyptic/survival horror "The Day", which is coming out on UK DVD later this month from eOne films.

Set a few years after some unspecified apocalyptic catastrophe. A small band of survivors, who are on the road looking for a safe haven, hold up inside a disused farmhouse to shelter from an upcoming storm.

One of them, a loner named Mary, seems to know a bit more about the place than she's letting on and is quite insistent that they press on as quickly as possible. But when one of them is taken ill, they are forced to stay the night. Unfortunately, they find the place is actually a trap, looking to snare unwary passers by, and fairly soon they find themselves trying to fend off a large scale attack by a group of blood thirsty marauders, who have them in mind for their next meal.

Kind of "The Road" meets "Assault on Precinct 13" with a bit of "Mad Max" thrown in, I found this to be quite entertaining. It starts off a bit slow to begin with, being more of a post-apocalyptic melodrama, but when the fighting between the group and the survivalists kicks off towards the end, everything moves up a gear and it becomes more of an action film. If you like these post-apoc/survival horrors you should enjoy it.

The film hits UK DVD December 27th, perfect for those in need of some post Xmas horror. No word on what extras will be included on the disc though, if any.

Fresh out of prison and back on the streets of London, Lloyd is determined to stay on the straight and narrow for the sake of his girlfriend, Jemma, and unborn child.

Reaching the top and settling down, much to the disappointment of Lloyd, it is clear his friends want a party. Things soon get out of control and when pregnant Jemma goes missing, the group starts to fear that they are not alone.

Sound of my Voice - UK DVD review.

Twentieth Century Fox recently got in touch to tell us about their new film "Sound of my Voice" and were kind enough to send me a review disc to take a look at, so here's my review...

A young couple, Peter (Christopher Denham of "Shutter Island" fame) and Lorna (Nicoel Vicius) are looking at breaking out of their humdrum jobs and getting into the world of investigative journalism. Hoping to do an expose on religious cults, they start with a local group who's enigmatic leader Maggie (Britt Marling - "Another Earth") claims to be from the future.

Having been initiated into the group, they begin to dig into the cults activities with a view to exposing their leader as a fraud. But the deeper they get involved with them, the more Peter finds himself drawn towards Maggie's stories. Even when his girlfriend Lorna uncovers just who this Maggie really is...

Not strictly a horror movie, this is really more of a psychological thriller. Sadly though the movie just didn't work for me, as it seemed really slow and I prefer films that are bit more action packed, which this wasn't. In fact this kind of felt like it was intended as a TV episode for a detective drama or something, but was expanded to feature length, as there seemed to be a lot of padding in the plot.

There was an interesting twist in the end, but it leaves a lot of questions unanswered. If you enjoy psychological thrillers you might enjoy this, but lovers of mainstream horror features may not.

The disc is bare bones, and devoid of any supplemental material.

The films is available on both DVD and Blu-Ray and is released to stores Nov 26th.

Zombie Flesh-Eaters - UK Special Edition from Arrow Films

On Monday 3rd December, Arrow Video are set to release a newly restored version of Lucio Fulci’s controversial horror masterpiece ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS on Blu-ray, DVD and Limited Edition Steelbook.

Hailing from the now infamous “Video Nasty” era of horror films, Zombie Flesh Eaters became an unstoppable cult hit upon its release in 1979. The film divided opinion across the globe and came up against opposition in many territories for the sheer amount of bloody content and its high gore-factor.

The original cut of Zombie Flesh Eaters was banned in the UK upon release, and the film that appeared in cinemas was an edited version with a full 2 minutes of brutality stripped out to get past the classification board. These new high definition restored editions contain the full unedited film, as Fulci made them to be seen.

Painstakingly restored from the original camera negative, ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS stands-out as one of the famed distributor’s biggest ever (and best looking) restoration projects. This landmark horror release contains a wealth of special features, additional collector’s material, and never-before-seen extras including optional English / Italian opening titles, a UK exclusive introduction to the film from lead actor Ian McCulloch, plus a number of brand new featurettes.

Extras on the discs are listed as follows...

- A brand new HD restoration of the original negative with optional English and Italian opening titles
- Optional English SDH subtitles for English audio / a new English subtitles translation for Italian audio
- Optional original, restored Italian and English Mono 2.0 audio
- Audio commentary with screenwriter Elisa Briganti, moderated by Calum Waddell
- Audio commentary with Fulci biographer Stephen Thrower and horror expert Alan Jones
- UK exclusive introduction to the film from Ian McCulloch
- “ALIENS, CANNIBALS AND ZOMBIES: A TRILOGY OF ITALIAN TERROR” – Actor Ian McCulloch remembers his three classics of Latin horror lunacy - ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS, CONTAMINATION and ZOMBI HOLOCAUST
- “FROM ROMERO TO ROME: THE RISE AND FALL OF THE ITALIAN ZOMBIE FILM” – Veteran Fulci screenwriters Dardano Sacchetti (THE BEYOND) and Antonio Tentori (CAT IN THE BRAIN), celebrated UK critic Kim Newman and filmmakers Luigi Cozzi (CONTAMINATION), Ruggero Deodato (CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST), Russ Streiner (NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD) plus many more share memories of the genesis of corpse -crunching cinema - from Romero's early templates to the gory glory days of Fulci and his many successors.
- “THE MEAT MUNCHING MOVIES OF GINO DE ROSSI” – The special effects magician behind many Italian splatter classics talks about his most famous gore-drenched greats - and shows props from many plasma-packed masterworks - including ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS, CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD, THE HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY, CANNIBAL FEROX, BURIAL GROUND and PIRANHA II.
- “ZOMBIE FLESH EATERS - FROM SCRIPT TO SCREEN” – Dardano Sacchetti shows key pages from his original ISLAND OF THE LIVING DEAD screenplay.
- Trailers and TV spots
- Collector’s booklet featuring brand new writing on the film by Fulci biographer Stephen Thrower, a new interview with star Olga Karlatos by Calum Waddell, a history of Zombie Flesh Eaters and the BBFC by Craig Lapper , one of the board’s senior examiners, and extracts of the original ‘Nightmare Island’ 1978 script including unfilmed, alternate, and more gory sequences as well as a Lucio Fulci CV compiled by Jay Slater.

X-Game DVD review

Danger After Dark recently sent me a copy of their new release "X-Game" to take a look at which is out later this month.

The film centres around Japanese teenager Hideaki Kokubo, who finds a DVD with an X on the cover. Playing the disc in his machine, the film appears to be some sort of low budget horror film, showing a man being tortured.

But the methods in which he's being brutalised brings back some disturbing memories of his school days, in which one of the girls in his class was routinely harrased and forced to play a violent "punishment game".

Shortly afterwards, Hideaki finds himself being kidnapped by a mysterious hooded figure and subsequently held in a room resembling his former school room, along with several of his old classmates. Where they are forced to play a more violent version of the game by more of the mysterious hooded figures.

The film is in Japanese with English subs, and was in many ways reminiscent of the original "Saw" film (before they became those overly bloody torture-porn style films as the series went on). It was by director Yohei Fukuda, who also gave us the infamous "Grotesque", and is quite bloody in places, though also manages to be quite funny at times.

Those with a warped sense of humour will defineitely enjoy this.

No news of what extras will be on the disc (if any).

Winter Chills on the Horror Channel.

If you're yearning for some post-Halloween horrors, the Horror Channel (UK) are showing a season of "Winter Chills" this November, featuring some truly snow filled spine-tingling premieres.

The season kicks off Nov 9th. With DEAD SNOW, in which the hills are alive – with undead Nazis in this beautifully nasty horror comedy by director Tommy Wirkola (Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters). Which sees eight medical students head out on their vacation, only to realise they came to the wrong resort, as deep in the hills lay an unthinkable evil.

The season continues with BLOOD RUNS COLD on November 10th. Swedish director Sonny Laguna gives the slasher genre a welcome Scandinavian make-over. Record-producer Winona heads to her hometown on the outskirts of Stockholm for a break... Shortly after settling in, she invites a former boyfriend and a couple to the house. But there is an unknown presence stirring within the house, one that has been waiting for the right moment to strike.

Wrapping up the season is sci-fi horror thriller THE THAW (2009) Directed by Mark A Lewis, it stars Val Kilmer as Dr. Krupien the head of a team of ecology students, who are examining a melting ice cap in the Arctic.  When Krupien unearths a prehistoric specimen the likes of which has never been seen, he summons four of his brightest students to take part in the excavation. But the melting polar ice-cap has released a deadly pre-historic parasite.

"The Dead" rise again!

The Ford Brothers, the team behind the acclaimed zombie thriller "The Dead", have revealed that the much awaited sequel "The Dead 2" will be shot in India. Chatting to the audience at the FrightFest Halloween All-nighter, Howard Ford unveiled a teaser trailer shot on a recent location recce and said that the film, for which the screenplay is now completed, is anticipated to start production in February/March 2013.

Howard went on to say: “Jon and I have been receiving so much enthusiasm and demand for a sequel we owe it to the fans of 'The Dead 1' to deliver something that goes way beyond what we could achieve first time around and the starting point was to find the most stunning and varied landscapes where we have not seen the dead walk before”.

His brother Jon added: “Part 2 has to be another journey movie with varied terrains but challenges for our main characters that contain all of the gritty detail that people liked from the first film. There will be a lot more action and more scares along the way but we don't want to loose any of the little details that kept it feeling real”.

You can view the teaser trailer on You Tube.

Post-Apocalympic Stratford - Sci-Fi/Horror festival

SCI-FI-LONDON EAST - Starts 9th November!

According to the Mayans, it's all over in December this year. So, what better way to prepare than watch monsters, mutants and the military try to make sense of it all.

We are delighted to be teaming up with Picturehouse Cinemas and bring our festival to Stratford. We kick off on Friday 9th and run though to Sunday 11th November. We screen some amazing films and have a few special events in the bar.

Full details are on the website, but here are a few highlights:

ANTIVIRAL
Fresh from its UK premiere at the London Film Festival, we are delighted to be screening this biting satire on the contemporary obsession with celebrity culture, from Brandon (son of David) Cronenberg. Which is also a warning about the powers, and inherent dangers, of the big pharmaceutical corporations.

THE HUMAN RACE
UK premier from Director, Paul Hough, who made the award-winning short THE ANGEL. Eighty people from totally diverse backgrounds suddenly find themselves in an undisclosed location where they are expected to compete in a race with the simple rule "Race or die." Will it be survival of the fittest or a show of humanity?

Makes The Hunger Games and Running Man look like a Sunday perambulation in the park.

ALLNIGHTERS
What would a SCI-FI-LONDON festival be without our notorious all-nighters. Once again we bring you a collection of our favourite MST3K episodes and a superb line-up of new anime titles.

Films include TIGER AND BUNNY, JOURNEY TO AGARTHA, GINTAMA and GYO: TOKYO ATTACK FISH!

Book now to avoid disappointment.

As well as great film, we have a masterclass in disaster survival, chats with writers about PA fiction and a tough post-apocalyptic pubquiz!

So grab your cricket bat, sword or weapon of choice and join us for the some fun.

Hudson Horror Festival 666

One for my US site visitors, On Saturday, December 1st, 2012, the "Hudson Horror Show 666" will present a whopping six movies (for the price of five) along with shorts and vintage trailers, all off rare 35mm films.  It’s a massive, sweaty 12 hour explosion of horror and exploitation!

This is by the far the biggest and most diverse lineup of movies we have ever presented.  The show starts and heaven will be torn asunder as you run from, THE DEVIL’S RAIN!  Starring Ernest Borgnine, William Shatner, Tom Skerrit, and an appearance by John Travolta, this is the coolest of the Satan Chic classics from the 70’s.

One of the greatest exploitation movies of all time, SWITCHBLADE SISTERS, tells the story of the Dagger Debs, the tough as nails girl gang whose members were hot as hell.  Quentin Tarantino loves this movie, but hasn’t quite stolen from it yet!

Not many sequels can equal their predecessors, but PHANTASM II is one of the few. With more action, more midgets, and well, more balls, Phantasm II shatters the myth that all sequels suck.

There are no midgets in RE-ANIMATOR, but director Stuart Gordon’s unrated bloodbath has just about everything else.  Mad scientists, zombies, talking heads and the most insane oral sex scene ever committed to celluloid, this film is cinematic proof that Jeffrey Combs got robbed of a best actor Oscar in 1985.

Sound the trumpets of Crom, after 30 years; the original CONAN THE BARBARIAN makes it triumphant return to the big screen!  Forget the boring, anemic remake; Arnold Schwarzenegger’s breakout film delivers more blood, blades and boobs than most vintage slasher films.

Speaking of slasher films, what’s a Hudson Horror Show without one?  Have no fear as our mystery movie is now revealed to be the original BLACK CHRISTMAS.  Again, screw the remake; this is the original yuletide horror classic from 1974, which many claim to be the very first true slasher film.  And any movie starring John Saxon just kicks major ass!

Be sure to bring extra cash as we will have vendors selling more wares than ever before.  Comic books, movie posters, super cool magnets, rare DVD’s, t-shirts, artwork and more will up for grabs at HH666.  Horror author Jason Gehlert will even be in attendance signing copies of his brand spanking new book, Jeremiah Black.  This book sounds even sicker and more twisted than Jason’s other works, for all of his info go to www.facebook.com/jason.gehlert.

Advance tickets are $26.00 in advance at our website, if any day tickets remain, they will be $30.00 at the door day of show, cash only.  Doors open at noon, show starts at 1PM and runs until 12AM.  One ticket gets you entry in and out all day long.

For more information on the show, head to www.hudsonhorror.com or email us at info@hudsonhorror.com.  Advance tickets are going quick and are only on sale until Monday, November 26th at 11:59PM.  Get your tickets now!  See you on 12-1-12!!
